• Is there an ORM with APIs to be used programatically?

  Hello. Neither did not get any response for my previous question, nor enough views :) So here I am now framing my query afresh. Is there any ORM that offers APIs to be used programatically? In my situation, a user will be helped through a wizard to define some entities. Thereafter those entites will be created in a database in form of tables (there will of course be some improvization). I need an ORM that offers APIs for modeling and creating entities during application runtime and not just during design time. Mine is a .Net application, therefore I was looking at Entity Framework. However, to me it looked tied to Visual Studio (I may be wrong also as I am new to it). Any recommendations? Or alternative point of view?

• Check if a symlink has changed

  I have a daemon that, when it's started, loads its data from a directory that happens to be a symlink. Periodically, new data is generated and the symlink updated. I want a bash script that will check if the current symlink is the same as the old one (that the daemon started with) and if not, restart the daemon. My current thought is: if [[ ! -e $old_dir || $(readlink "$data_dir") == $(readlink "$old_dir") ]]; then echo restart ... ln "$(readlink "$data_dir")" "$old_dir" -sf else echo no restart fi The abstract requirement is: each time the script runs, it needs to check if a symlink on a given path now points to a something other than it did the last time and if so do something. (The alternative would be to check if the data at the path has changed but I don't see that being any cleaner.) My questions: Is this a good approach? Does anyone have a better idea? Where should I put $old_dir?

• How to link to a folder in document library from sharepoint list item?

  Hi, Background: I have an items on the sharepoint list. I also have a corresponding folder in a document library that contains documents about this item. I want to be able to get to this folder straight from the item properties. I have tried to create a lookup column containing folder ID, but that doesn't help cause folder is not a type and it just doesn't work. Other solution would be to create link column but if I will create it staticly - after creating alternative mapping (and getting to the page from the internet for example) it won't work. (so solution posted here won't work for me). I want to create this link from sharepoint workflow. I have a custom action that can return any info about the folder I want (ID, URL etc). Question: How to link from sharepoint list item to a folder in document library?

• Multiple calls to /dev/stdin using python subprocess (*nix)

  Hi, I have a python subprocess call which I would like to link up to three pipes (two standard in and one standard out). I know that there is only one /dev/stdin, but there's all those other devices in /dev I don't know about, and don't know of any python os, sys or subprocess modules that will utilise them in a manner which allows me to give the device path to subprocess.Popen. The reason I ask is because I would like to pipe information from a mysql database or tar archive rather than a directory structure I currently have which has 28,000 directories in. The directory names alone uses a LOT of space! The alternative is to tar / gunzip the entire directory structure and manoeuvre through the compressed archive. With either solution, mysql or tar, I would still like to have two pipes into subprocess.Popen and one out, so that I can bypass the HDD. Any need for an example??

• manipulating 15+ million records in mysql with php?

  Hey, I got a user table containing 15+ million records and while doing the registration function i wish to check whether the username already exist. I did indexing for username column and when i run the query "select count(uid) from users where username='webdev'" ,. hmmm, its keep on loading blank screen finally hanged up. I'm doing this in my localhost with php 5 & mysql 5. So suggest me some technique to handle this situation. Is that mongodb is good alternative for handling this process in our local machine?   While reading Wikipedia's page on decltype, I was curious about the statement, Its [decltype's] primary intended use is in generic programming, where it is often difficult, or even impossible, to name types that depend on template parameters. While I can understand the difficulty part of that statement, what is an example where there is a need to name a type that cannot be named under C++03? EDIT: My point is that since everything in C++ has a declaration of types. Why would there ever be a case where it is impossible to name a type? Furthermore, aren't trait classes designed to yield type informations? Could trait classes be an alternative to decltype?

  Hi, I'm using MS log application block for logging my application event into a file called app-trace.log which located on the c:\temp folder. I'm trying to find the best way to read this file at runtime and display it when the user asks for it. now i have 2 issues: it seems that this kind of feature is not supported by the framework, hence i have to write this reader myself. am i missing something here? is there any better way of getting this data (w/o buffering it in the memory or saving it into another file). if i'm taking the only alternative that left for me, and implementing the reader myself, when i'm tring to do: System.IO.FileStream fs = new System.IO.FileStream(@"c:\temp\app-trace.log", FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read); i'm getting "File being used by another process c#", probably the file is locked by the application block. is there any way to access and read it anyhow?   Hi, I am developing a Graph-class, based on boost-graph-library. A Graph-object contains a boost-graph, so to say an adjacency_list, and a map. When monitoring the total memory usage of my program, it consumes quite a lot (checked with pmap). Now, I would like to know, how much of the memory is exactly consumed by a filled object of this Graph-class? With filled I mean when the adjacency_list is full of vertices and edges. I found out, that using sizeof() doesn't bring me far. Using valgrind is also not an alternative as there is quite some memory allocation done previously and this makes the usage of valgrind impractical for this purpose. I'm also not interested in what other parts of the program cost in memory, I want to focus on one single object. Thank you.

  I have installed the application on the client's server. Here's the issue though.. The client's server is running on medium trust. With medium trust godaddy does not give persmissions to certain files. If you go to the following URL : http://helpingyougethired.com/Introduction.aspx you will see the error : Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.Practices.ObjectBuilder. If I delete the "Microsoft.Practices.ObjectBuilder.dll" and "Microsoft.Practices.ObjectBuilder.xml", the pages load. But when I try to save the form, I get some error related to this dll. So I need to find an alternative for this dll. I cannot use this DLL. my save, delete, select process is depend on this dll plz provide any solution if u have. thanks in advance

• jQuery plugin and prototype class

  Hi I am converting some prototype javascript to jQuery javascript. In prototype we can do Class.create to create a class. However, jQuery doesn't provide this. So I was thinking to rewrite the class into a jQuery plugin. Is this the best practice? My concern is that if I do all for the class, then I will add a lot of things to jQuery object. • Compressing digitalized document images

  Hello, We are now required by law to digitalize all the financial documents in our company and submit them to evaluations every 3 months. Since this is sensitive data we decided to take matters into our own hands and build some sort of digital data archiver. The tool works perfectly, but after 7 months of usage we are begining to worry about the disk space used by these images. Here some info on the amount of documents digitalized: 15K documents scanned and archived per day, with final PNG size of +- 860KB: 15 000 * 860 kilobits = 1.53779984 gigabytes 30 days of work per month: 1.53779984 gigabytes * 30 = 46.1339952 gigabytes Expectation of disk space usage after 1 year: 46.1339952 gigabytes * 12 = 553.607942 gigabytes So far we're at 424 gigabytes of disk space used, without counting backup. We're using PNG as image format, but I would like to know if anyone have any advice on a better compression algorithm for images or alternative strategies for compressing the PNG's even more or even better ways to archive images as to save disk space. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

• Is there an easy way to add a secure file upload form (username, password, select file) to a website

  Hi, I am very new to website design. Have an architect who wants his clients to enable his clients to upload (ftp - but don't know if http could be a better alternative?) files (plans etc.) to him, through the website I'm designing for him. I have seen similar things available on printers websites... I have seen uploadify, but it requires flash (I can only code HTML, CSS and a tiny bit of PHP), and don't think it is a secure option. I have also seen net2ftp, but don't really understand how it works. Any direction would be sincerely appreciated.

• MS VC++ 6 class wizard

  Ok, I'm developing an application that has been in pretty much continous development over the last 16 years, from C in DOS, through various flavours of C++ and now is largely based around C++ with MFC and StingRay GUIs and various other SDKs. While I use VS 2005 for the release builds, I still use MSVC 6 for much of the GUI building, simply because ClassWizard is so much quicker in this environment than the weak equivalent tools that followed. Note that I am using ClassWizard to automatically generate code for my own user defined types (see Custom DDXs) and I like to add a lot of member variables and methods in one go. Creating them one at a time as per later versions of Visual Studio for me is a big backward step. At the same time, working with multiple IDEs is also a pain. My question is in two parts; Is there any way of getting ClassWizard to work is VS 2005 or VS 2008? Is there any drop in replacement, or alternative IDE, that provides similar levels of productivty for old C++ hacks such as myself?

• Performance improvement to a big if clause in SQL Server function

  I am maintaining a function in SQL Server 2005, that based on an integer input parameter needs to call different functions e.g. IF @rule_id = 1 -- execute function 1 ELSE IF @rule_id = 2 -- execute function 2 ELSE IF @rule_id = 3 ... etc The problem is that there are a fair few rules (about 100), and although the above is fairly readable, its performance isn't great. At the moment it's implemented as a series of IF's that do a binary-chop, which is much faster, but becomes fairly unpleasant to read and maintain. Any alternative ideas for something that performs well and is fairly maintainable?

  I'm using a database link to execute a DELETE statement on another DB, but the DB link name doesn't conform to global naming, and this requirement cannot change. Also I have global_names set to false, and cannot be changed either. When I try to use these links however, I receive: ORA-02069: - global_names parameter must be set to TRUE for this operation Cause: A remote mapping of the statement is required but cannot be achieved because GLOBAL_NAMES should be set to TRUE for it to be achieved. - Action: Issue `ALTER SESSION SET GLOBAL_NAMES = TRUE` (if possible) What is the alternative action when setting global_names=true is not possible? • Supporting rotation sensors in Symbian across multiple devices in one executable

  I'm puzzling my head as to how some application appear to support the couple of Rotational Sensor APIs for Symbian, specifically the Sensor API and the Sensor Framework (both the 5th ed. and the 3rd ed. FP2 backport). For example, I believe that Gravity will support rotation in N95 and also newer models from the same binary (could be wrong there...). If I use the Sensor Framework then my app will not install on an N95 (it gives me a System Error -1), whereas if I use the Sensor API (RRSensor) then it will only install on an N95 and no other phones. This is most likely due to the available libraries on those devices. I am trying to find some way of abstracting things such that I can use exactly the same binary for all devices. The only alternative I can see is trying to use ECOM plugins and then installing the relevant library using conditionals in my PKG file. Does anyone know of a better/easier way?

  (WARNING: this is my first java application, coming from .NET, so don't bash me if I write too much garbage) I'm developing a simple JSF 1.2 web application which should support Russian, Chinese, and other languages outside ISO 8859-1, which is automatically used in Properties.load(). Is there a way to use the Properties loaded from XML files, with Properties.loadFromXml(), inside JSF, without writing too much code? I know there are alternative ways to do so (writing my own loader, escaping the characters...), but I'd really love to find a simple solution, and I don't see it in all the forums I checked.   I have an app where users get points for actions they perform - either 1 point for an easy action or 2 for a difficult one. I wish to display to the user the total number of points he got in my app and the points obtained this week (since Monday at midnight). I have a table that records all actions, along with their time and number of points. I have two alternatives and I'm not sure which is better: Every time the user sees the report perform a query and sum the points the user got Add two fields to each user that records the number of points obtained so far (total and weekly). The weekly points value will be set to 0 every Monday at midnight. The first option is easier, but I'm afraid that as I'll get many users and actions queries will take a long time. The second option bares the risk of inconsistency between the table of actions and the summary values. I'm very interested in what you think is the best alternative here. Thanks, Dorian

• How to store a 250mb database in an Offline Web App

  Ok, maybe i'm not seeing the whole picture or something, but i kinda need a brainstorm. So the purpose is to make a webapp (HTML5, CSS, Javascript) that has to search on a 250mb database without any internet connection, so.. yes the database has to be on the client side. The hard part here is, this App has to work on an iPod or iPhone without internet connection. (An initial connection to download the App is ok), LocalStorage has a 5mb limit, couchDB would be great since they have an webapp easily accessed by Javascript (privacy concerns don't matter at this point), so i'm pretty much out of ideas.... Does anyone see an alternative, or solution for the purpose?

• Input Sanitation Best Practices

  Our team has recently been working on a logic and data layer for our database. We were not approved to utilize Entity or Linq to SQL for the data layer. It was primarily built by hand. A lot of the SQL is auto generated. An obvious down fall of this is the need to sanitize inputs prior to retrieval and insertion. What are the best methods for doing this? Searching for terms like insert, delete, etc seems like a poor way to accomplish this. Is there a better alternative?
