• SQL Server error handling: exceptions and the database-client contract

  We’re a team of SQL Servers database developers. Our clients are a mixed bag of C#/ASP.NET, C# and Java web services, Java/Unix services and some Excel. Our client developers only use stored procedures that we provide and we expect that (where sensible, of course) they treat them like web service methods. Some our client developers don’t like SQL exceptions. They understand them in their languages but they don’t appreciate that the SQL is limited in how we can communicate issues. I don’t just mean SQL errors, such as trying to insert “bob” into a int column. I also mean exceptions such as telling them that a reference value is wrong, or that data has already changed, or they can’t do this because his aggregate is not zero. They’d don’t really have any concrete alternatives: they’ve mentioned that we should output parameters, but we assume an exception means “processing stopped/rolled back. How do folks here handle the database-client contract? Either generally or where there is separation between the DB and client code monkeys. Edits: we use SQL Server 2005 TRY/CATCH exclusively we log all errors after the rollback to an exception table already we're concerned that some of our clients won't check output paramaters and assume everything is OK. We need errors flagged up for support to look at. everything is an exception... the clients are expected to do some message parsing to separate information vs errors. To separate our exceptions from DB engine and calling errors, they should use the error number (ours are all 50,000 of course)

• python list/dict property best practice

  I have a class object that stores some properties that are lists of other objects. Each of the items in the list has an identifier that can be accessed with the id property. I'd like to be able to read and write from these lists but also be able to access a dictionary keyed by their identifier. Let me illustrate with an example: class Child(object): def __init__(self, id, name): self.id = id self.name = name class Teacher(object): def __init__(self, id, name): self.id = id self.name = name class Classroom(object): def __init__(self, children, teachers): self.children = children self.teachers = teachers classroom = Classroom([Child('389','pete')], [Teacher('829','bob')]) This is a silly example, but it illustrates what I'm trying to do. I'd like to be able to interact with the classroom object like this: #access like a list print classroom.children[0] #append like it's a list classroom.children.append(Child('2344','joe')) #delete from like it's a list classroom.children.pop(0) But I'd also like to be able to access it like it's a dictionary, and the dictionary should be automatically updated when I modify the list: #access like a dict print classroom.childrenById['389'] I realize I could just make it a dict, but I want to avoid code like this: classroom.childrendict[child.id] = child I also might have several of these properties, so I don't want to add functions like addChild, which feels very un-pythonic anyway. Is there a way to somehow subclass dict and/or list and provide all of these functions easily with my class's properties? I'd also like to avoid as much code as possible.

If i amend this line: $twitterHost = "http://twitter.com/favorites.xml"; And change it to: $twitterHost = "http://twitter.com/favorites.xml?page=2"; I can get the next set of 20 favorites. There doesnt appear to be anyway, using the Twitter API, to find out how many pages of favorites there are. As such can anyone suggest the best way to get all favorites? Or if this is not possible, get all the Tweets for a date range?

  I'm having trouble with the array or object that should be passed based on the response from __gettypes. When there is more than 1 letter it says Undefined. • Do vs. Run vs. Execute vs. Perform verbs

  Before anyone starts to go nuts and red flag this post saying this is "Subjective" which drives me absolutely nuts because everyone has their own intent why they are posting something others feel are subjective. Subjective is subjective to each person, how about that! So with that let me tell you a couple things so that this post does not get flagged by flag happy moderators: 1) There are community guidlines on specific keywords recommended by certain organizations or people (e.g. Microsoft, Lance Hunt, etc.) 2) I want to know what others are using the most and why. Why they feel this verb reads better than others 3) Books even talk about this verb issue (Uncle Bob, etc.), so it's not subjective Now to my actual question: a) What list of verbs are you using for method names? What's your personal or team standard? b) I debate whether to use Do vs. Run vs. Execute vs. Perform and am wondering if any of these are no longer recommended or some that people just don't really use and I should just scratch them. Basically any one of those verbs mean the same thing...to invoke some process (method call). This is outside of CRUDs. For example: ExecutePayPalWorkflow(); that could be also any one of these names instead: DoPayPalWorkflow(); RunPayPalWorkflow(); PerformPayPalWorkflow(); or does it not really matter...because any of those verbs pretty much are understandable as to "what" shows your intent by the other words that follow it "PayPalWorkflow" This discussion can go for any language. I just put the two main tags C# and Java here which is good enough for me to get some solid answers or experiences.

• Will TFS 2010 support non-contiguous merging?

  I know that merging non-contiguous changesets at once may not be a good idea. However there is at least one situation in which merging non-contiguous changesets is (probably) not going to break anything: when there are no intervening changes on the affected individual files. (At least, it wouldn't break any worse than would a series of cherry-picked merges, checked in each time; and at least this way you would discover breakage before checking in). For instance, let's say you have a Main and a Development branch. They start out identical (e.g. after a release). They have two files, foo.cs and bar.cs. Alice makes a change in Development\foo.cs and checks it in as changeset #1001. Bob makes a change in Development\bar.cs and checks it in as #1002. Alice makes another change to Development\foo.cs and checks it in as #1003. Now we could in theory merge both changes #1001 and #1003 from dev-to main in a single operation. If we try to merge at the branch level, dev-to-main, we will have to do it as two operations. In this simple, contrived example it's simple enough to merge the one file - but in the real world where there would be many files involved, it's not so simple. Non-contiguous merging is one of the reasons given for why "merge by workitem" is not implemented in TFS.

  I originally implemented this as a wrapper class around a list, but I was annoyed by the number of operator() methods I needed to provide, so I had a go at simply subclassing list. • Can a lambda can be used to change a List's values in-place ( without creating a new list)?

  I am trying to determine the correct way of transforming all the values in a List using the new lambdas feature in the upcoming release of Java 8 without creating a **new** List. This pertains to times when a List is passed in by a caller and needs to have a function applied to change all the contents to a new value. For example, the way Collections.sort(list) changes a list in-place. What is the easiest way given this transforming function and this starting list: String function(String s){ return [some change made to value of s]; } List<String> list = Arrays.asList("Bob", "Steve", "Jim", "Arbby"); The usual way of applying a change to all the values in-place was this: for (int i = 0; i < list.size(); i++) { list.set(i, function( list.get(i) ); } Does lambdas and Java 8 offer: an easier and more expressive way? a way to do this without setting up all the scaffolding of the for(..) loop?

• AttributeError in my Python program regarding classes

  I'm doing an exercise out of the Python book that involves creating a class and a subclass. I am getting the following error when I try to run the program: AttributeError: 'Customer' object has no attribute 'name', when it tries to go through this bit of code: self.name.append(name) As this is my first time dealing with classes and objects in Python, I'm sure I am making some overt mistake somewhere, but I can't seem to figure it out. I've looked over the documentation for creating classes and writing member functions, and it looks correct, but it is obviously not. I want the Customer subclass to inherit the name, address, and telephone attributes from the Person superclass, but it doesn't seem to be doing so? • SQL code to display counts() of value retrieved from another column

  I have three tables (these are the relevant columns): Table1 bookingid, person, role Table2 bookingid, projectid Table3 projectid, project, numberofrole1, numberofrole2 Table1.role can take two values: "role1" or "role2". What I want to do is to show which projects don't have the correct number of roles in Table1. The number of roles there there should be for each role is in Table3. For example, if Table1 contains these three rows: bookingid, person, role 7, Tim, role1 7, Bob, role1, 7, Charles, role2 and Table2 bookingid, projectid 7, 1 and Table3 projectid, project, numberofrole1, numberofrole2 1, Test1, 2, 2 I would like the results to show that there are not the correct number of role2s for project Test1. To be honest, something like this is a bit beyond my ability, so I'm open to suggestions on the best way to do this. I'm using sqlite and php (it's only a small project). I suppose I could do something with the php at the end once I've got my results, but I wondered if there was a better way to do it with sqlite. I started by doing something like this: SELECT project, COUNT(numberofrole1) as "Role" FROM Table1 JOIN Table2 USING (projectid) JOIN Table3 USING (bookingid) WHERE role="role1" GROUP BY project But I can't work out how to compare the value returned as "Role" with the value got from numberofrole1 Any help is gratefully received.

• Are there alternatives to Sysinternals ADInsight?

  I had been using ADInsight from Sysinternals to trace Active Directory calls from my workstation, but the application has failed. Where previously the Active Directory events were traced and logged, now the window remains blank, whether the application is in capture mode or not. I have run as Administrator, rebooted, downloaded a new version; none of those actions has returned the program to a functional state. The Sysinternals forums don't offer much hope, since this tool is known to fail often. Is there tool that has similar functionality? Questions Does the tool fail when run from another workstation with your account? Yes Does it fail from your (and/or) another workstation using someone else's account? • VMWare Server 2 Install is Failing w/ Error 25032: "failed to customize windows logon process"

  VMWare Server 2 install question here.* Straightforward question that would probably require a VMWare expert to pull apart, given that Google has been totally worthless on this. On a patched Windows XP machine, any attempt to install VMWare Server 2.0.1 results in failure, just prior to completion (progress bar is full but I can tell network adapter stuff hasn't been fired yet and most of the services haven't been instaled). The error: Error 25032. Failed to customize Windows logon process (). Please contact your administrator. Upon dismissing the error, you're treated to: Warning 25033. Failed to remove Windows logon customization (VMGINA.DLL). Please contact your administrator. Clicking "OK" rolls back your installation. Killing the installer and hoping that it somehow leaves a working install behind was also unproductive. *I hope install troubleshooting isn't outside the purview of serverfault, I'm typically an SO user.

• wildcard ssl certificate - exchange 2010 - POP/IMAP problem

  previously we have requested a wildcard ssl certificate from godaddy for our major domain. one of the reasons was the new established exchange server 2010. usually you require following names included in certificiate: FQDN (e.g. mail.whatever.com) Hostname (mail) Domain name (whatever.com) Autodiscover.whatever.com MX Record with the wildcard certificate these are all covered (except of the local hostname). During creation/importing of the ssl certificate into exchange 2010, exchange first asks, if a wildcard certificate is used and then encounters an error - due to the certificate is a wildcard certificate and not a certificate especially generated for the FQDN, SSL for POP and IMAP can not be provided. couldn't find any workaround or solution for this on google, so I hope, maybe some one here has an answer or solution for me! :) the exchange 2010 is running on a windows server 2008 R2 enterprise. thanks in advance and best regards, sise

• dedicated server - cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi redirect when accessing via server IP

  This isn't so much of a problem, but would like to know why this happens. we have a dedicated server running WHM. If I access the server via its IP address directly I am automatically redirected to http://xx.xxx.xx.xxx/cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi I know how to edit this page (this isnt the problem) I'm just curious why I get redirected to this .cgi page, rather than simply remain @ xx.xxx.xx.xxx/ and view my default "landing page", if you like. What setting could I change so that if anyone visits my server IP, they do not get redirected to xx.xxx.xx.xxx/cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi For instance if you visit 173.194.37.104 (google), you view the google home page, but URL remains the same. Hope this makes sense. thanks

• Microphone not working in Windows Virtual PC (on Windows 7)

  I"m using Windows Virtual PC on Windows 7 (host) running Windows XP (as the Guest O/S) I'm trying to get the Microphone working. When I Enable Integration Features: Microphone does not work When I run the Sound Recorder, the record button is disabled. If I look at Sound settings, there are no options for the Mic (it's all disabled "grayed out"). Speakers work Copy & Paste works When I Disable Integration Features: Microphone and speakers work Copy and Paste does not (as expected) Drag'n Drop copying does not work in either situation. What I've Tried Verified that the Windows XP Mode Virtual PC guest also has the same symptoms (Mic doesn't work) and audio out (speakers) do work. I"m going to try (but have little hope) to: -Uninstall and Reinstall the Integration addin for Virtual PC

• Set Firefox viewport size

  I thought this would be easy, but turns out it's not. I need to set the Firefox viewport size to a given value (larger than my screen resolution). What I want is not to enlarge the application window, but to enlarge the size available to the html content. The viewport won't be physically larger, but will "tell" the html that it is, so that webpages will take more space (obviously making scrollbars visible). For example, let's say my physical Firefox window is 800x600 px. I'd like to set "viewport size=2", then the available space for the html to render would be 1600x1200. Web Developer has a resize feature but it doesn't work when you set a size larger than your screen resolution (in Windows 7). Thanks in advance (I hope my explanation makes some sense).

• Excel 2003 charts not looking right in 2007

  I'm not exactly sure this goes here but I don't know where else to look for help. I have some Excel files containing charts made with Excel 2003. When I open the file in Excel 2007 and save it (non 2007) is messes up the charts. However, when in Excel 2007 and I Save as a .xlsx type the charts don't mess up. Is there any help for me to be able to not have the charts mess up when simply saving the 2003 file with Excel 2007? Hope that's confusing. Thanks.

• Can´t install OS from usb flash drive

  My previous problem was describe here: Can't boot OS from USB drive, showing black screen with blinking cursor and there are informations about my laptot. So please look there and then read rest here. I changed flash drive and it fix the problem but now when I boot to Ubuntu (or I tried Fedora, it do same) I can´t install system. I click on Install Ubuntu 10.10 I choose language, then on next window I click Forward but it just show waiting cursor and nothing happen (same Fedora). It doesn´t freeze so I can end install and I can take printscreen (when I was taking the screen, cursor was shown as waiting, not normal as in picture, it´s weird). Image where my installation ends I think there is some problem with Disk and Volumes and so. But I used chkdsk from W7 on boot and It said everything all right and I try utility in Ubuntu and check file system and it is all right too.Image with my Disk (Volumes and other things) I hope someone helps me. • Slow Browsing/Direct Download, but Fast Bittorrent Download

  I'm using Windows XP SP2. I have a 1 MB connection via a SpeedTouch 585, and my internet speed registers at 0.3 MB, with a maximum download of 30kbps. Not to mention a terrible ping at 500-1500. On the other hand, I get full speed in uTorrent - a bittorrent program - reaching up to 100 kbps; the way it should be. I haven't made any changes to anything. And it has been functioning well until the last month. I waited in hope that it could be an ISP issue and that it would be resolved, but their support crew did not help me with this problem either. I've tried disabling all firewalls, and all wireless connections, using different browsers, and disabling QoS. But it did not work. Me thinks it's an ISP issue, but if so, how am I getting full speed in uTorrent? Could somebody help me out with this? Thanks.

• Hot deploying with Tomcat Manager fails because file already exists

  Tomcat beginner question that I hope will help many. Could someone explain how TomCat hot deploy is supposed to work. We have a currently deployed 'TomCatTest', and we want to fix a small bug in 'TomCatTest' with no downtime for users. We are using the Tomcat Manager console, and just trying to upload a file there.   I have a sidebar (right sided iframe) and when i click on a link in it, it opens a new window in IE8, (in firefox it open a new tab). What do i need to do to open links in IE8 in a new tab. I already set the Tools-Internet Options-Settings- 'Always open pop-ups in a new tab' and 'A new tab in the current window' open in new tab but still doesn't work. My links are pretty simple, what am i missing ? exemple: text. Also some site are saying to register Regsvr32 actxprxy.dll to fix this problem, still doesn't work. And i want this to work with a simple click, no 'right-click-open in new tab' option. I also hope i won't get the 'can't change how ie8 works' answer. ;)
