• Socket 1155 vs 2011 vs Haswell

  The title says it all. I am trying to decide between sockets and just cant pinpoint which to get based on pros and cons. The build this will go into will be my primary PC. It will be used for every day computing, coding, some multimedia and gaming. I have read that 1155 and 2011 will be dead within the new year and that Haswell will double the performance of Ivy Bridge. What is a general run down on the different sockets? Pros and Cons? More specifically what are the technical differences between the three?

Since this is a very structured approach, I find it really difficult to remember what I've done on previous projects and go back and forth easily. What are your suggestions on improving my processes? I'm open to closed and open source software (as long as the price isn't too high). I also want to implement a system where I can save most of the projects online to increase collaboration and efficiency and reduce bandwidth especially on document editing. Imagine emailing a document back and forth 5-10 times a day.

• Load website and fill form from the command line

  Using the Linux command line (Bash shell) I like to load a specific website in my browser (normally Firefox, but other one would be ok as well as long it runs under Linux) and fill a pre-defined form with some data. Actually, this should run from a Makefile. Most of the form data is static and will be stored as variables in the Makefile, just some fields are to be filled manually before manually sending the form. I know how to load the website in question from the command line using: firefox <URL> But there seems no possibility to fill the form automatically with variables given on the command line. Is there a plugin, executable or JavaScript which allows me to do this? Any suggestions and hints are welcome. I don't mind coding some JavaScript.

• Installing sublime text plugins all at once

  Is there a way to install all the sublime text 2 plugins that you would like to install all at once. In Notepad++, there is a plugin manager which lets you install all the plugins you want to install by checking the box next to the plugin name & description. I was wandering if there is something like that for sublime text. For eg, I would like to install Zen Coding, JQuery Package for Sublime Text, Sublime Prefixr, JS Format, SublimeLinter and many other plugins all at once rather than typing each plugin in the Package Control and installing it one by one.

• Adding entries to the context menu and organising them in Windows 7

  So I've got the hang of adding keys to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\Shell, and I know I can add a string entitled 'Position' and change its value to position the entry I've made, but I can't figure out how to do three things (nor can I find anything guiding me in doing them): 1) How to put a bar on either side of an entry to separate it from other entries 2) How to position them in an exact place in the context menu (eg. above or below a certain other entry) 3) How to make an entry that brings up another list of entries (like the 'View' and 'Sort by' entries that are already there when you right-click in Windows Explorer I wasn't sure whether this goes in StackOverflow or SuperUser, but I thought maybe it goes here since I'm using Regedit rather than coding it (though I am aware you can right a .reg file and then execute it to install these sorts of things). Thanks!

• Removing a custom vim configuration

  I've added a lot of small mappings to my vimrc that help me work, like noremap H ^ and inoremap jk <esc>. It's diverged enough from vanilla vim that other people at work have trouble coding on my computer. This has been making it harder to pair program with people and get help reviewing code. What I'd like is a way to quickly toggle on/off all of my custom mappings and switch between my vim config and a more 'conventional' one (like relative vs absolute numbering). What would be the best way to do this?

• Are relative-path symlinks reliable on Rackspace Cloud Sites?

  Rackspace's Cloud Sites have a lot of stupid limitations. For example, no SSH (in or out), no shell, no RSYNC, etc... (even through cron). Recently I learned that you can't reliably use symlinks in Cloud Sites. Apparently this is because the absolute path of your sites could change at any moment, since it's a shared host environment split up between many disks/servers. I guess different account's sites get moved from disk to disk whenever Rackspace decides to. Supposedly to increase efficiency across the board. So after talking with a Rackspace tech, he said they cannot guarantee that symlinks would always work. Obviously this is because if you have a symlink that use's an absolute path like this: //mnt/disk-34566/home/user34566/files/sites/www.mysite.com/mydir If you files go moved to a different disk (or whatever they do), then the absolute path would be different and the link would now be broken. That makes sense. So next, I asked the Rackspace tech if relative path symlinks were reliable. So if I have the following link: files/sites/www.mysite.com/mylink --> ../www.myothersite.com/anotherdir You can see that the symlink simply points to a nearby directory's sub-directory. He said they cannot guarantee that even those would always work either. Since it uses a relative path to another nearby directory I'm not sure how it could ever break from something Rackspace would do. Do relative symlinks somehow rely on absolute paths underneath? Or is Rackspace using some weird custom filesystem where they will break from absolute path changes? It seems like a relative-path symlink would be fine and would only break if the user did something to mess up the directories involved. But when the tech's say that they "don't officially support symlinks of any kind" that makes me hesitant to use them for large commercial websites in Cloud Sites. Can anyone with Rackspace experience give input on this topic?

• How do I make vim's autoindent not drop trailing spaces?

  In some text editors (e.g. Kate, gedit), when auto indent is enabled, pressing return twice will leave a trailing whitespace (which I want): if (code) { .... ....| } While others cater to the coding standard where trailing spaces (even in blank lines) aren't allowed: if (code) { ....| } What annoys me about this is that if I arrow up after auto-indenting, the auto-indent is lost: if (code) { | .... } If I run vim and :set autoindent , I get the latter behavior. My question is, how do I set vim to keep the trailing spaces rather than automatically removing them if they go unused?

• Migrating 10-15 Websites Running Linux, LAMP, RoR, WordPress

  Task is to move 10-15 websites running Linux to new servers hosted by Amazon. These boxes are currently on dedicated servers. Some sites are running WordPress, some have custom CMS, and others might have RoR applications. Unfortunately, there is sparse documentation regarding each site and how services/files are dependent on each other which means there is a lot of detective work that needs to take place. My goal is to properly document each site, what makes them work, etc., so future admins have at least something to work with. Currently my strategy is to download each site so I have a backup of the files then scan through them looking for configuration files -- db connections, apache configs, etc. Then, create a nice spreadsheet with these findings and migrate these out to the new server. My question to ServerFault is this, are there things you would look out for? Easier ways to handle this task that I'm missing? Points will be awarded to answers that help with efficiency. • Socks5 proxy "Dante" leaves many child processes stuck in FIN_WAIT2 / CLOSE_WAIT state

  I'm running dante v1.2.1 as a SOCKS proxy server. The proxy works fine but at the end of the day there are around 40-50 or more child processes of sockd running even though there are no active connections. lsof shows that the child processes all have sockets in the CLOSE_WAIT and FIN_WAIT2 state. These child processes stay in this state unless I manually killall/restart the daemon. I'm running Gentoo Linux on a 2.6.24-23-xen kernel. I recently upgraded from dante v1.1.19-r4 which was giving me the exact same problem. Is this a configuration issue with Dante, my system, or is it a coding issue in the dante code?

• Overcrowded Windows XP Folders

  I know that, technically, an individual Windows XP directory can hold an immense number of files (over 4.29 billion, according to a quick Google search). However, is there a practical ceiling where too many files in one directory starts having an impact on reads to those files? If so, what factors would exacerbate or help the issue? I ask because my employer has several hundred XP machines in the field at client sites, and the performance on some of the older ones is getting "sludgy." The machines download and display client-defined images, and my supervisor and I suspect that our slacktastic approach to cache management could be to blame. (Some of the directories have tens of thousands of images in them.) I'm trying to gather evidence to support or contest the theory before spending time on a coding fix.

• Reduce power consumption of gaming computer while idle

  This is my current build: EVGA X58 (first generation) motherboard Intel i7 965 clocked @ 3.3 Ghz 3x DDR3-1600 Corsair RAM at stock timings and voltages Corsair AX750 80 Plus Gold PSU 1 Optical Drive 1 Seagate 7200.10 500 GB drive 2x Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB drives OCZ Vertex 1 60 GB EVGA GTX 460 oc'd at 800/1600/1850 Antec 1200 case HT-Omega Striker 7.1 Sound Card Windows 7 32-bit Professional (PAE Enabled) I've already seen this post Reduce power use on computer and this post How do I lower power consumption of my computer and while useful, I'm looking for answers specific to my build and OS. I'm pretty sure this build is a energy-intensive build by default, but I want to try to reduce the amount of energy my build uses when I leave it idle (when I go to bed or go out, etc). The first requirement for this machine is that I need to leave it on, so I cannot turn it off while it's being unused. I run it as a file server for personal reasons and I also leave it on in case people leave me messages on various IM services and chat clients (IRC, MSN, Steam, XFire, Pidgin, etc). I'm also unable to replace the parts in my computer with a cheaper "greener" part. What are some ways to minimize the amount of power the machine uses? I'm already using a high efficiency power supply (80 Plus Gold), but I imagine there's other things that can be done in the BIOS and Windows' power settings to reduce power usage while I'm not using the computer. From what I can tell, I can't use Sleep since that'll disable network access (whole reason why I leave the computer on in the first place). I already turn off my monitor when it's not in use. I enabled Intel SpeedStep within the BIOS (I know, I have a 965 and why am I enabling SpeedStep?) Should I bring the graphics card back to stock speeds and lower the clock on the processor even more? Main reason why I'm asking is I think this computer alone is the reason why my power bill is high, so I want to reduce its consumption to as low as possible without having to shut the thing down.

  I'd like to use stylesheet instead of hard-coding HTML so that text within cells are aligned vertically, ie. text starts at the upper left-hand corner. Thank you. Edit: Problem solved. Turns out the HTML editor I'm using is a bit old and didn't display things as expected, but they do show OK in a modern browser with "vertical-align:top".

• Mouse button and keypress counter for Linux?

  I would like to have some kind of statistic of my daily mouse/keyboard usage to help me make my keyboard layout a little bit more efficient. There is already an question about how to do this on windows, but I would like to know I anyone is aware if this is possible under linux. Another thing I already found is key-mon, a little program for screencasts that displays your mouse and keyboard presses on the screen, which would help me achieve what I want with a little bit of python coding by myself. • Remove LCD Stand for Wall Mounting - FSM-270YG

  Based on Jeff Atwood's post on Coding Horror, I ordered one of these monitors, and I've been absolutely loving it. However, I recently (i.e. today) took the next step in monitor-y goodness and fastened the sucker to an articulated wall mount. Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to remove the stand. The flat portion comes off with a single screw, but the leg it fastens to has no apparent method of removing it. Has anyone figured out a trick for removing these, so they don't just stick out below the screen? Should I remove the screws from the backside of the screen, and look for an internal connection to remove? Or just give up and live with it? (After all, it's a great display, it's floating in the air in front of me, and the stand leg is only a minor annoyance).

• Google Chrome never renders fonts properly / no smoothing etc

  A while ago I started using Chrome and no longer Firefox, however I found out something weird which maybe force me to return to Firefox if I can not fix this. I am coding a homepage and the output was in Chrome ugly, in Firefox not. I thought "ok this is maybe due to bad code"... however I found out that the same problems occurs on different sites like Facebook too. The font is not smoothed and it is not nice to read. Here is an example, although I have censored nearly everything... Bad Chrome Rendering Good Firefox Rendering You may need to open up in a new tab to see the errors in detail. Now I want to know, whether this is just Chrome trolling me or maybe something else. EDIT I tried it out under Ubuntu on my PC and it works well... seems to be an error on Windows/Chrome on Windows.

• Customize autoindent settings in VIMRC file

  I have autoindent enabled in my .vimrc file but have run into an annoying bug/feature. For example, when I'm tabbed in 3 times, and I hit return, the new line is also tabbed in 3 times. Then when I hit enter again, that new line is also indented 3 times, as it should. The problem occurs when I go back up to the previous line (the first of the 2 new lines). VIM automatically removes the whitespace because it saw it as an empty line. Is there a way to disable this from happening? I'd like to be able to back to coding like this: function test(){ <return> <return> } <up> <right> Thanks!

  Here's an example that will explain things: Sheets("Plot Data July").Select ActiveSheet.ListObjects("tPDJuly").Range.AutoFilter Field:=2 ActiveSheet.ListObjects("tPDJuly").Range.AutoFilter Field:=4 So as you can see above, Field:=2 is a relative reference to the second field in the table called "tPDJuly". So now if I add more columns, this number does not get updated. The field is actually called "Grade" in the table. So is there a way of coding this so that no matter which column it is in, "Grade" is always updated? I suppose one solution is that we add a line that find what is the column number for "Grade"?

• Stop a particular key getting captured by rdesktop

  Hello, I want F12 to be not capture by my rdesktop while in fullscreen, so that I can do whatever stuff I'm doing on my remote Windows computer, but pressing F12 would bring down yakuake, and I can type down my commands, or use vim etc for whatever I'm doing. Is there any possible way to do this? I tried playing with keymaps, but that didn't help. I set F12 to inhibit, but that seems to have stopped sending F12 altogether, rather than let gnome catch it and let yakuake pop up. Would be really grateful for answers. I am ready to do my homework, if someone could please just give me pointers etc. Thanks :). Sidenote: My current arranement stems from my large monitor in lab, and small personal laptop monitor, and the laptop has Windows 7. My lab computer has Linux, on which I do my coding work.

• SQL Server Management Studio Connect to Server List Editing

  I'm using SQLServer Management Studio (2005) and I have a fairly lengthy list of servers in there, and I'd like to get rid of some of them that are no longer in use, without having to set them all up again. I know that the C:\Users\*\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Shell\mru.dat can be deleted and this will remove ALL the entries, but is there anyway to just delete some of them? (Coding info) I looked at the file and it is a serialised blob from the Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.ConnectionDlg.dll (Class Personalization) in the Appplication directory, but all the methods are private. So I can't just create an instance of this and then call Remove on the entries. • Membership in two domains

  Hello! I would your suggestions for an effective solution for a person, who needs to access resources in two Windows domains and wants to use one computer. It's about our CEO, who has accepted a second position in another company. Accessing files and folders isn't big problem. The greatest challenge I see is that he wants to conveniently access Exchange accounts in both companies; he would like to send and receive mail in single Outlook if possible (two profiles?) There is also a challenge with calendars: he would like to have one calendar for all activities from both Exchange accounts. Creating a POP3 account for accessing second Exchange server is a last resort, because obviously there is a problem with scheduling meetings and other calendar related tasks. Forwarding and receiving all mail/tasks on primary Exchange server is inconvenient because simple replying to original sender is disabled; and also when manually changing the recepient, he will receive mail from the wrong address. We were considering Virtualisation, that is setting up an instance of virtual machine inside existing installation and then joining this virtual computer to a second domain. Then installing another MS Outlook. This would of course mean two different Outlook accounts, two different calendars, but would at least enable our CEO to access all information from a single laptop. Does anyone have any other idea? I know setting up two domains on a single computer is a no-go (without much hacking at least), but effective workarounds are appreciate. The thing I am looking here is high usage/efficiency/productivity, but also as elegant solution from the administration point of view. Thank you very much (if you managed to read this through, this is a good sign ^_^ )
