  Consider you have the following class public class OuterClass { ... private static class InnerClass { int foo; int bar; } } I think I've read somewhere (but not the official Java Tutorial) that if I would declare the static member classes attributes private, the compiler had to generate some sort of accessor methods so that the outer class can actually access the static member class's (which is effectively a package-private top level class) attributes. Any ideas on that?

• Downside to including headers in every source file (Objective-C)

  I'm currently including my AppDelegate.h and all of my category headers into every one of my source files using the MyApp_Prefix.pch prefix header, instead of manually #importing them only where they are used. The category methods and lots of compiler #define's in my app delegate are used in lots of places in my code. Is there any down side to this? Is it just that compilation will take longer?

  In the spirit of undefined behavior associated with sequence points such as “x = ++x” is it really undefined?, how does one get the compiler to complain about such code? Specifically, I am using Visual Studio 2010 and Xcode 4.3.1, the latter for an OSX app, and neither warned me about this. I even cranked up the warnings on VS2010 to "all", and it happily compiled this. (For the record, VS2010's version added 1 to the variable where Xcode's version kept the variable unchanged.)

Which means that if a client requests "/page.html" first, then "/index.html", the condition will evaluate to true even if the cookie for the "/index.html" has not been set. I found in bug report phk or someone else stating that computing regular expressions was extremely expensive which is why they are evaluated during compilation. Considering this, I believe that there is no way of achieving what I want the way I've been trying to. Is there any way of solving this problem, other than writting a vmod?   In the WIX setup I've got, when upgrading the application I have set a requirement to close down applications which might hold on to files which needs to be updated: <util:CloseApplication Id="CloseMyApp" Target="[MyAppExe]" CloseMessage="no" Description="!(loc.MyAppStillRunning)" RebootPrompt="no" ElevatedCloseMessage="no" /> The application on the other hand will capture closing down the window with a "user friendly" dialog box where the user can confirm that he or she wants to close down the application. I've experienced problems with the CloseApplication, and one theory is that the dialog box stops the application from closing. So the question is: Could this be a possible problem? If so - how can I have this confirmation dialog box and still behave properly when the installer asks the application to close down? Must I listen to Win32 messages (such as WM_QUIT/WM_CLOSE) or is there a .NET API which I can use to respond properly to these events?

• Why won't this Apache modrewrite RewriteRule work?

  I'm trying to get Apache mod rewrite to work on my local machine. I'm running OSX with PHP 5 and the Apache mod rewrite module is enabled. I have a directory called localhost/~Jason/hfh/admin with various PHP includes called based on a $_GET variable. I want to let users type (in theory) localhost/~Jason/hfh/admin/pages and have that URL stay in the address bar, while what gets displayed is localhost/~Jason/hfh/admin/?admin=pages So. I've created a .htaccess file that sits in the /hfh directory. Inside, I've put this mod rewrite text: RewriteEngine On RewriteRule ^admin/([^/.]+)/?$ admin/?admin=$1 [L] When I go to the browser and type localhost/~Jason/hfh/admin/pages I get a "Problem loading page" error, and Firefox says, "Oops. Firefox can't load this page for some reason." Can anyone help me figure this out? I have such a hard time with regex and mod rewrite...

• Replacing build.xml with Build.java - using Java and the Ant libraries as a build system

  I've grown disillusioned with Groovy based alternatives to Ant. AntBuilder doesn't work from within Eclipse, the Groovy plugin for Eclipse is disappointing, and Gradle just isn't ready yet. The Ant documentation has a section titled "Using Ant Tasks Outside of Ant" which gives a teaser for how to use the Ant libraries from Java code. There's another example here: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg16310.html In theory it seems simple enough to replace build.xml with Build.java. The Ant documentation hints at some undocumented dependencies that I'll have to discover (undocumented from the point of view of using Ant from within Java). Given the level of disappointment with Ant scripting, I wonder why this hasn't been done before. Perhaps it has and isn't a good build system. Has anyone tried writing build files in Java using the Ant libraries?

• CSS layout with 2 columns, taking up all width of browser, where left column can collapse

  I want to have a 2 column layout, and have the left column able to be 200 px at first, and have a "shrink" button to shrink it down to 10px, and have the right column expand to fill all the rest of the available space. Then if they click on the "show" button (which will be all they see in the now 10px wide left column) have the left grow back to 200px and have the right column shrink by that amount. I can't figure out how to make the right column grown and shrink without knowing the exact width of the window. I hope this makes sense, and I really hope someone can point me in the right direction. Browser requirements are IE8, FF3.6, Safari, and Chrome, so in theory I can use some advanced CSS techniques. At least I don't have to support IE6.

• Making the domain-model of tic tac toe

  I am trying to make the domain model of a Tic Tac Toe game. I'll try then to go on through the various steps of the Unified Process and later implement it in some language (C# or Java). I'd like to have some feedback if I'm going on the right path: I've defined the game with two actors, Player O and Player X. I'm not sure about defining both a Tile and a Tile State. Maybe I should only define a Tile and have the 3 possible states specialize from it? I'm not sure what is best: to have both Player O and Player X be associations with Tic Tac Toe or have them inherit from Player that is associated with Tic Tac Toe. Following the design shown on the pic, in theory we could have a Tic Tac Toe concept with 2 Player O's, which wouldn't be correct. What is your opinion on this? Also, am I missing something in the diagram? Although I can't see any other actors for Tic Tac Toe, should I have any other? Thanks
