I have set up an unformatted primary partition with gparted and ubuntu live: During the installation i choose language (i'm italian), time and keyboard, and then it shows me the "prepare partition" window, with no partitions at all and all greyed out! • Make GRUB 2 boot Windows 8 safe mode

  I have a dual boot configuration: Windows 8 Consumer and Ubuntu 11.10. I tried to install the Asus drivers for my motherboard (P8Z68-V LE EFI) in windows 8, and i now get bluescreens when starting windows. Holding F8 or Shift-F8 doesn't seem to be working, so is there another way to get into Safe Mode, or uninstall the errant driver? I need to get into Safe Mode in windows to fix the issue. Things I have tried: Disabling overclock Holding F8 or Shift+F8 How can i get GRUB 2 to boot windows 8 in safe mode? Or is there another way to disable a driver that is making it impossible to boot?

• Can Grub be configured to remember the last OS you booted into?

  I typically have 2-3 OSes in my boot menu: Ubuntu 10.04 Windows 7 [Sometimes, a third option, such as Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook] If I am in an OS other than the default choice (Windows 7 in this case), and I reboot, Grub boots into Ubuntu 10.04. This shouldn't happen--when I reboot in Windows 7, I want to stay in Windows 7. Is there any way to configure Grub to remember my last choice, and boot into that? Alternatively, it would be even better if Grub only did this when I rebooted (not when I first turn the computer on). I realize this may not be possible, so I'd be happy with simple last-choice-remembering.

• RESOLVED Why does IPtables's NAT stop working when I enable the firewall's third interface?

  On my firewall I've three interfaces : eth0 : public IP (46.X.X.X.) eth0:0 public IP (46.X.X.Y.) eth1 : public IP (88.X.X.X.) eth2 : private LAN (172.X.X.X) I've setup a basic NAT which works great until I turn on the eth1 interface, I basically loose the connectivity. When I turn off the interface (ifconfig eth1 down) then the NAT re-work. I've added some policy routing via iproute, which makes my three public IP's available. I don't understand why turning on eth1 on makes the LAN unavailable. PS : weirder ; when I turn on eth1 BUT remove the NAT, then the firewall is accessible by using the public IPS. So to me it's exclusively a NAT issue, since without the NAT the network works while with the NAT without the second public interface, the NAT does work. Regards EDIT : I've been able to make it work by using iproute2 rules. That was definitely a routing issue.   I got 3 display working in Linux. I have set it up so I have Xinerama and 3 different X sessions. So my 3 displays are not all the same size, two are 1680x1050 and then the other which is between the two is 2560x1600. So my issue is when I chose span, even if the image is larger than all 3 resolutions combined, the center monitor has bars at the top and the bottom because span scales the image it seems. Is there a way if I bypass the gui to have an image span all three monitors but with no scaling? Urgent! Please help! ;-)

  I am pretty sure that the latest Ubuntu release does not support my wireless internet card. Everything was working fine in 9.04 and since upgrading my browser will load web pages. I can see and connect to my wep encrypted network. I can ping google.com and lose no packets. I am at the end of my tether, what else can I try? Is it possible to download a driver to re-enable my wireless?

  I'm a newbie running Ubuntu 9.10. I have two users (wife and me), and each user's screensaver is set to lock so that on wakeup, we get to choose which user's desktop to go to. However, Ubuntu requires a password, so this is pretty tedious. I'd like to switch users without entering any password. I know about this trick that works for the boot login, but it doesn't deal with multiple users. Is it possible to set empty passwords for users in Ubuntu, or skip the password in other ways? (I'm expecting real Linux users to suggest that passwordless users must not get any rights and there be an admin user with a strong password. Yes, you're right. But that's not what this question is about. Thanks.)

  I'm new to networking. I'm trying to share a folder between to computers (both have kubuntu 10.04 installed). I'm able to share a folder with samba and can see that folder through samba on the same computer. But if I try to go on the other PC I can't see the first one.   Here is my IPCONFIG /ALL from the host (Windows 7 64-bit): Here is my IFCONFIG from the guest (Ubuntu 10.04): To be honest, I don't have experience configuring a network between a host and a guest in VMWare (a virtual machine). I've searched high and low on the internet, but I haven't seen anything that can help. Perhaps I'm just not using the right keywords when I search. Nevertheless, does anyone here have any experience with establishing a network connection? Edit: One important note. I don't use DHCP to provide private addresses to the hosts on my LAN. I use "static" IP addresses on my internal network by configuring each IP address manually in the host's network configuration utility (I have TV's, XBOX 360, and a few PC's). I would like to configure the IP on the virtual machine guest manually as well. The reason is because my XBOX 360 only works properly using a static IP address. It will kick me off XBOX Live if it has one given by the router (via DHCP).

  I'm running the latest Ubuntu version on my laptop, and every day when I arrive at my office I turn on the laptop and plug everything on. That includes a monitor that happens to be larger than the laptop's monitor. I always do my work on the desktop monitor, so I'd like for the Alt-Tab menu to always pop-up on this one. Instead, it's configured to pop-up whichever monitor the mouse is on (which makes sense, but doesn't work for me). Anybody know a way to change that?

  Hi, I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 and I'm wondering if it is possible to pick out what applications that should use a VPN. Say for example that I want to route Transmissions connection through a VPN, but I also want to be able to access my computer over SSH via my usual static IP-adress ( running the SSH- deamon over my normal internet connection) . Is there anyway to do this? As I've been searching the web I found that at least it is possible to set whether you want both your internet connection and your "local network" to go through the VPN or if you want just the "local network" to go through it. I'm using the network-manager-pptp with the pptp- protocol.

  Hello All, I'm in the mid of researching for one of the best hosting control panels. The server I run is Ubuntu and I have some experience with ISPConfig 2 & 3. Since I haven't explored any others available, what are the recommended ones for an Ubuntu server? I asked because I find that there seems to be some disabling and modifications required for an Ubuntu server if I need to use ispconfig which causes the server to change its actual way of running. It's quite good though, but any more recommended ones ? Something more organic? which doesn't require much breaking and changing. I'm not asking for the simple one, I don't mind going extra mile to install a powerful one but just try sticking with most Ubuntu's conventions will be an ideal one for me. And of course, if there happens to be something that meets the requirement as mentioned "Ubuntu conventions" and also simple to install at the same time, that'd be a bonus. Thanks in advance.

  I have an IBM thinkpad(R50e) whose display is broken. I would still like to use the laptop by connecting it to an external monitor and keyboard/mouse. This is what I did: Removed the hard disk from the broken IBM Put the hard disk in the working IBM and installed 10.04 on it. It booted fine and I installed many packages and stuff. I put the hard disk back into the broken display IBM thinking I could use it by connecting it to an external monitor that I own. Well, it turns out that while booting, the display shows up but because the display shifts from the VGA display to the primary display mid-boot, the laptop does not boot. Is there a way in which I can force the laptop to not use its primary display while booting. I looked at Randr and also grub.conf settings but nothing seemed to work. Please help!

• suddenly cannot mount nfs share from windows 7

  I recently reinstalled my file server (moved from fedora to ubuntu server). Now I cannot mount my nfs share from windows 7, mounting from mac osx works fine. In windows I either keep getting "the semaphore timeout period has expired" or "an unexpected error has occured". Does ubuntu need some special magic to allow windows 7 to mount an nfs share? • BIND unstable with DLZ+MySQL on Ubuntu 9.10, any ideas?

  My BIND server keeps dropping out and I can't work out why. Mysql had a segfault sometimes, but that seems to be no longer an issue. It's the 64bit version of ubuntu too. Sometimes it will return records just fine, other times it appears to just randomly go down.

  I did clean install from ISO DVD. It boots only to command line asking for login. After I login I enter STARTX and desktop appears and some of the studd actually works, but there are a lot of problems: there is no way to reboot or shut down except to stopx/logoff and enter shutdown sound system doesn't respond pulse audio volume control gives "connection failed, connection refused" DVD drives not available GDebi Package installer is grayed out and so I can't use it (but synaptic package manager works OK) Software Center won't start when clicked -- it just stops trying DBus cant run because it says /usr/local/var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket file not found (also /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket file not found) There's just a lot of things wrong and I can't help but think something is missing or was mis-coded in the distro so that there are typos in some script somewhere. If anyone can tell me where to begin to untangle this mess I'd appreciate it, but I think it all begins when it can't start the GUI automatically and I need to enter STARTX.

• Ubuntu 9.10 freezes when HDMI port is connected

  I have a Sony Vaio FW350 with a HDMI output. I'm trying to use it under Ubuntu 9.10 with a LG LCD monitor 21,5'. The laptop has a Intel 4500 video card. I've tried two approaches: Boot the laptop with the HDMI cable connected and monitor turned on. Result: LCD Monitor keeps turned on but the whole screen is black and Ubuntu do not seem to be initializing. Boot Ubuntu until the end. I then connect the HDMI cable into the Laptop. The mouse and the whole system freezes. In both cases the only way to turn off the laptop is holding the power button. I've looked around the internet for similar problems, but only found workarounds for the same problem with VGA input, not HDMI. I also tried to use metacity before connecting the cable, but still got the same result. Any hints?
