    I added some entries into my /etc/exports file. But when I boot my system, the file is not read. I check it by sudo exportfs — it returns nothing (also I can't mount the exported folders on other systems). Then I run sudo expotfs -a and then again sudo exportfs — and now all my exported folders are listed (and now I can mount the exported folders on other systems). I'm running kubuntu 9.04 with 2.6.28-11-generic kernel

  • Tool for logging NIC link state events.

    Intel NICs have a driver option (in Windows) that will log link state events to the system log, so if the network drops out periodically you can determine that fact. Does anyone know of a simple generic solution that does this, in other words one that is not part of the driver from a particular manufacturer? I know there are plenty of 'big iron' network monitoring tools out there but surely there's something really simple that runs as a service in Windows with minimal setup ? TIA

  • No new mail icon in panel when using evolution

    I am using Ubuntu 10.04, kernel 2.6.32-21-generic, with Evolution 2.83.3. I have noticed that when I get a new email, it never shows a new mail icon in the panel. I had the same problem with 9.10, and I thought the problem would go away when I upgraded to 10.04. I have checked the properties in Mail preferences: Play sound - yes Display a notification - yes Indicate new messages in panel - yes Many thanks for any suggestions.

    I have a plugin that gets pushed to all clients. However, I have one that's specific to a particular module, hence I don't want it synced with all my clients. My generic plugin is stored in /etc/puppet/modules/custom/lib/facter but I have a plugin stored inside a module that seems to be pushed to all clients regardless if the host inherits the class or not. Instead of editing a bunch of different vimrc, I would like to know if it's possible to have an "include" directive - something like a file named ".vimrc_module" and called from vimrc. I'm looking for something akin to the boot log you would get in Linux (with what is running at what times, how long it is running, etc). Also the public IP address will be configured directly on the machine,,, so we will not translate private/public IP addresses. If we use NAT,, we would have to translate the public IP on the WAN to the public IP on the LAN. The only security feature I expect on the gateway is an access list. I don't really know much about networking, so I am sorry if this question is generic.

This account is one of 2 generic accounts, one for students and one for Teachers on Call (TOC). The users are created, but I'm not deploying the server yet.   • Trouble installing Windows Embedded Standard 2009

    Getting the following error when attempting to install: Error attempting to create the destination file: C:\Windows Embedded Data\Repositories\{25C88912-9870-4686-97CE-8244C A1B0DAB}.CAB. System error code: 5 Code 5 looks to be an "Access denied" issue. Not sure if this is a generic Windows error, or specific to this install. Any insight is appreciated! -Tim

I want to re-image the machine using a generic software image, but would like to keep the user data (including settings etc) that are on there ala Windows Easy Transfer. I can mount the hard disk on another machine - can I use Easy Transfer to transfer the user state of an account on the non-booted OS? Or do I need explore USMT?

  • downsides to running RAID on unmatched drives?

    I've got some generic RAID controller built into my motherboard and I want to build either a RAID 5 or RAID 0+1 array. What are the disadvantages of running unmatched drives? Like 4 different brand 7200rpm 500gb drives? This would determine whether I look around for whatever used drives I could get my hands on vs. paying extra for a set of matched identical drives.
