  • How do you check out what's hot in the open source space?

    - by Fanatic23
I am trying to look for resources (sites, magazines, blogs, twitter etc) that track what's hot and happening in the open source space. This is programming language agnostic, I am more interested in knowing what kind of cool apps people are coming up these days particularly in the enterprise and scientific computing space. I am also into compilers, debuggers and other low level stuff. Any help appreciated.

    - by Goi
I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64bi on my i5-2400 system, and I'm experiencing very laggy keyboard and mouse input. I have to type really slowly or I some keys will not get registered. Also, the mouse cursor moves around very slowly at a very low frame rate. I've checked my keyboard and mouse settings and they seem to be fine. System monitor doesn't show any processes taking up significant CPU utilization. What else could be wrong?

  • How to Research Keywords - 1 Other Thing the Gurus Left Out

It's actually funny when you're learning "how to research keywords" in the beginning they tell you to just find some long tail keywords that has low competition and good search volume. Then they tell you to write some articles around those keywords and submit them to the article directories. At this point you're free to sit back, watch the traffic flow in, and rake in the dough!

  • How to see installed programs and the occupied space (not in Synaptic or Terminal)?

    - by cipricus
I am often running low on space on the system and home partition. I would like to see a list of installed programs and the space they take, in order to be able to make decisions on this matter. I do not mean a list with all components, 'secondary' programs and dependencies like in Synaptic, which I know can be also displayed in the Terminal -- so please do not set as duplicate of this question --, but just a list with the main programs (those that appear in the main menu) and with the space they occupy on the disk. (I use Xubuntu 12.10)

  • How do I deal with the problems of a fast side-scroller?

    - by Ska
I'm making a side scrolling airplane game and when I begin going very fast I begin to experience some problems as a player: Elements are not distinguishable, like power-ups from bullets, etc I start to feel dizzy and uncomfortable There isn't enough time to see what's coming How can I sort this out? Do I use less details in all the grahpics? Tiny Wings has the same horizontal movement speed as in my game but it doesn't suffer from these problems. Are there any other really fast side-scrollers I could take as a reference?

  • "Expecting A Different Result?" (2 of 3 in 'No Customer Left Behind' Series)

    - by Kathryn Perry
A guest post by David Vap, Group Vice President, Oracle Applications Product Development Many companies already have some type of customer experience initiative in process or one that could be framed as such. The challenge is that the initiatives too often are started in a department silo, don't have the right level of executive sponsorship, or have been initiated without the necessary insight and strategic business alignment. You can't keep doing the same things, give it a customer experience name, and expect a different result. You can't continue to just compete on price or features - that is not sustainable in commoditized markets. And ultimately, investing in technology alone doesn't solve customer experience problems; it just adds to the complexity of them. You need a customer experience strategy and approach on how to execute a customer-centric worldview within your business. To develop this, you must take an outside in journey on how your customers are interacting with your business to establish a benchmark of your customers' experiences. Then you must get cross-functional alignment on what you are trying to achieve, near, mid, and long term. Your execution of that strategy should be based on a customer experience approach: Understand your customer: You need to capture the insights across interactions, channels (including social), and personas to better understand whom to serve, how to serve them, and when to serve them. Not all experiences or customers are equal, so leverage this insight to understand the strategic business objectives you need to address. Then determine which experiences can be improved immediately and which over time to get the result you need. Empower your ecosystem: You need to align your front-line employees with your strategy and give them the power, insight, and tools that allow them to cultivate a culture around strengthening the relationships with your customers. You also need to provide the transparency, access, and collaboration that enable your customers and partners to self serve and self solve and to share with ease. Adapt your business: You need to enable the discipline of agility within your organization and infrastructure so that you can innovate, tailor, and personalize experiences. This needs to be done both reactively from insight and proactively in real time so you can stay ahead of shifting market trends and evolving consumer behaviors. No longer will the old approaches provide the same returns. To compete, differentiate, and win in a world where the customer has the power, you must execute a strategy that is sure to deliver a better brand experience for your customers. Note: This is Part 2 in a three-part series. Part 1 is here. Stop back for Part 3 on November 28.

  • How can I get my battery level to display in the notification area (system tray)?

    - by Jon
I'm trying to use the Awesome window manager with GNOME, i.e. running gnome-session --session=ubuntu on login, and it works great for the most part, except for the fact that the notification area/systray is missing a battery indicator. There's the Network Manager applet (nm-applet), a keyboard icon for switching keyboard layouts, but no battery icon as I would've hoped. I thought the command would be something like gnome-power-manager,

  • How do I disable the sleep button on my keyboard?

    - by KillianDS
I have a "power button" on my keyboard that enables standby or hibernate. I can't find the mapping of this key anywhere in "sytem settingsKeyboard", "systempower management", "compiz config or similar (where I could find it before unity). How can I disable (not remap) this button? I do not want to disable hibernate/sleep altogether, it's simply this key that gets pressed a lot by accident and it's getting quite annoying.
