  I have an airport extreme with a drive connected, and use it for backing up snow leopard macs. I have an occasional problem with one of them that says "the backup disk image ... is already in use" and it fails to backup. Any ideas?

  In Leopard, on Finder - desktop, right click pop up menu has an option for automator scripts. In Snow Leopard - they have removed this option. More over, I would like to learn some automator scripts. What are the great resources for learning about automator & it's script ?   Cheers, does anyone know what component in Macbook identifies itself as "Apple Mikey HID Driver"? Joystick and Gamepad Tester detected my gamepad, the keyboard (with each key as a separate axis/button/whatever) and this mysterious device (with single axis/button identified as 'Page: 0x6, Usage: 0x22' which doesn't update). This is in white Unibody Macbook '09. Remark: While Googling for the component, I stumbled upon this mailing list post mentioning Apple IR?

• How to turn startup chime off on a iMac G5 under Gentoo

  I have a iMac G5 only with Gentoo installed on it and every time I turn it on, it plays the startup chime. I already have my headset plugged in but this doesn't mute the sound. Is there a way to turn it off using the Open Firmware or, if this isn't possible, could a script do this ?

• MacBookPro running Windows 7: accidental trackpad input is driving me mad

  I am running Windows7 Professional 64bit on a 2010 MacBookPro using BootCamp 3.1. I am using an external trackball. When I am typing, I accidently brushing the trackpad and accidently overtyping randomly selected pieces of text. Which is driving me mad. I have tried to install TrackPad++, but I could not get the Trackpad++ control panel to recognise that the driver software was installed. I tried TrackPad Magic, but although it gives me a system tray icon telling me it is working, but it does not appear to disable the track pad. A quick Google implies that there should be an option in the BootCamp Control Panel 'Ignore accidental Input while typing'. But I can't see one of those in my BootCamp Control Panel. Am I looking in the wrong place? Is this feature 32bit only? Is there anything else I should try?

  We are using Cables Unlimited USB-2925 USB-to-Dual-DB9 serial cables, which use the Moschip MCS7720 controller. We have downloaded the newest driver from http://www.moschip.com/mcs7720.php, but that driver was last updated in 2005. It does not seem to be working with Macs running OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. We have sent emails to the support addresses for both Cables Unlimited and Moschip. Cables Unlimited says they are checking with Moschip. No responses from Moschip yet. Does anyone know of any updates for this driver, or are there any ways to get the driver to work with Snow Leopard?

  When I try to authorize my iTunes account on Snow Leopard (10.6) with iTunes 9.0.2 I get this error: "There was an error storing your authorization information on this computer the required file was not found or has a permissions error. • MacBook Pro Boot Camp SPDIF passthrough?

  I'm using Windows 7 through Boot Camp on a unibody Macbook Pro and am having problems using the SPDIF output. I get the expected Dolby Digital or DTS in some movies, but in other movies and in games (Source engine, StarCraft 2) where the output is enabled to 5.1, the output invariably shows up as Dolby Pro Logic, which means (I think) that passthrough is not enabled. The boot camp drivers for the sound card don't have any sort of control panel, and the Windows settings for enabling DTS and Dolby seem to work when I test those outputs in the sound settings. Is there some other setting or utility I can use to enable SPDIF passthrough for all programs?

• OSX: Undeletable files

  So via what I suspect is a cron'd rsync gone awry, I noticed that I have ~25000 variants of .DS_Store in a directory that's on an external disk, they're named "..DS_Store.FOO" where FOO varies. The problem is that I can seem to delete them, even using the various tricks I've seen over the years for removing files with oddball names. No problem, I said - I moved all of the real files into another directory and then just tried to do an 'rm -r' on the original directory ... no luck, it fails to delete those files and says directory not empty. Tried it again with 'rm -rf' and still no luck. I have no idea how to get rid of this thing, does anyone have any idea?

• Macbook Pro suddenly lagging video playback + Flash sites

  I have a Macbook Pro, OSx Lion, Intel Core2 Duo, 4GB Ram, NVidia Geforce 8600M GT 128 MB Ram, Intel x25m SSD. Approximately 4 years old. I've been running Flash sites and playing videos without any problems for years. Then suddenly 3 months ago, a flash site like http://thefwa.com is lagging in all browsers. Even mouseover animations - anything. Also video playback in e.g VLC and Quicktime is now lagging. Same videos I used before, I tried installing an older version of VLC without any luck. Playing back video in VLC utilizes the CPU almost 100%, and Flash sites like thefwa.com easily takes up 50-60%. It's as if the hardware acceleration stopped working, or the GPU lost its magic. UPDATE: Same issues also occurred on Snow Leopard Has anyone experienced something similar, or do you know what might be wrong?

There's a button on the back of it right next the battery, when I push it all five lights next to the button light up. I don't think where the charger is put in is broken. Any help? .

• Moving files fails due to privileges but they seem to be OK

  I am trying to copy old files from an OS X 10.5.8 to a new external HD. When trying to copy a folder I get the message: The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items. I've checked the privileges and they seem ok (read & write for me). What is curious is that the folder is created empty on the target drive and I can then copy the contents from inside the original folder to inside the new folder without changing anything else. This happens with several folders but not all and is making backup a pain. I have to figure out which folder broke the copy, copy its contents to the external disk and then select what hasn't been copied to copy (and eventually stop at some point and repeating the experience)

• How do you enable syslogd to accept incoming connections on Snow Leopard from remote loggers?

  How do I get syslogd to accept incoming connections from remote hosts on Snow Leopard? I'd like to centralize logging such that various devices and systems send logs to Snow Leopard's syslogd, which normally hangs out on UDP 514. However, I'm unable to get them to successfully be accepted by good ole syslogd. I tcpdumped on the Snow Leopard box to verify that packets are being spouted to port 514 -- they are. I checked that syslogd is listening on 514 -- it's not. Googling around told me that, on older versions of OSX (don't you love the way things change so rapidly on OSX), one just had to add a flag to the syslogd daemon to allow remote; one did this in com.apple.syslogd.plist. However the syslogd daemon has no flags (at least in its man page) that suggests any remote anything. What's the solution to this? Secondary, less import but relevant question: What's 'newsyslog'? I see a plist file but it's not running (apparently). Thanks

• MacBook Pro 15in High-res hard to read. What setting should I change?

  I just bought a new MacBook Pro with the high-res screen (1680x1050), but I noticed that all text is so small that to read it my face has to be like 18 inches away. When I adjusted the resolution to be the next sizes down (1440 x 852, and 1440 x 852 stretched), as well as all the other smaller sizes it made everything look blurry (similarly to when you use Command + Scroll to zoom in, how the text is really soft on the edges, and difficult to read). Is there a setting somewhere that I'm missing, or another resolution settings area that I can use. I feel like this 2800 dollar notebook may be only good for movie watching otherwise. • Prevent scp from copying local files?

  I just read the Linux scp command issue question and it reminded me that I regularily forget to specify the colon in the host part of a scp command, and thus copying a file locally instead of copying to a remote host, e.g. I do scp foo host instead of scp foo host: But I never use scp to copy a file locally. So I wonder if there is a way to make scp fail if both (the source and destination) arguments refer to local files.

• iTunes: Burn an MP3 CD when I only have AAC files?

  Is there a way to burn an MP3 CD when iTunes only contains (unprotected) AAC files purchased from the iTunes store? There isn't an option directly in iTunes to convert AAC - MP3 like there is for MP3 - AAC, and having to convert the AAC files to MP3 and use an extrnal tool to burn the disk would be time-consuming. Are there any plugins for iTunes that can accomplish this? Or programs which can read an iTunes playlist, convert the tracks to MP3 "on the fly" while burning the CD?

• Safari can’t establish a secure connection to the server

  I realize there is another question with the same title, but my situation is very different. The problem started on three of my computers after upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard. I can login to gmail and facebook using https with no problem. I can not login to https://identi.ca/main/login or https://seminars.wolfram.com/ or https://panopticlick.eff.org with Safari, works fine with Firefox. Already tried "Safari Reset..." Any ideas?

• Hostname problem

  my hostname is newton ...when I set "127.0.0.1 Newton" in /etc/hosts .. parallels stops working.. when I set "127.0.0.1 localhost" in /etc/hosts apache installed via ports stops working.. when I add both '"127.0.0.1 localhost", and "127.0.0.1 newton" to hosts file.. parallels network doesnt work
