• How can I change the size of the Dash font?

  I've just installed and configured Ubuntu 12.04 on my machine. I've changed all font sizes, with the myunity tool, and they're now all set to the Ubuntu font size 9. However, I can't find anywhere in Ubuntu a way to change the HUGE dash search/UI font. Any idea on where I can change it? Any dconf/gconf setting option? • Issue with Ivan Heckman's allSnap

  For the longest time I have used Ivan Heckman's allSnap program to better manage Windows on my pc by making them easily snap together, instead of overlapping. However on Windows 8 I cannot seem to get this to work. I suspect it has something to do with how Win8 boarders seem to have a transparent pixel around the outside of the window padding boarder, but overall I would love to get the snapping functionality back if it is at all possible. It's very hard trying to find information about this online as all I find are posts talking about snapping Metro apps to the side of the screen in Desktop Mode.

• TechEd 2012 - last session

  Nearly over. For last session attending a talk on c++ apps in windows metro. When I came to TechEd I didn't think I would attend so many sessions on c++, but somehow this has proved more interesting this year. While .net 4.5 is interesting, been playing with it for a while now, so not a ton of surprises. Of course, i still want it at work, but who knows how long that will take - so will just have to use it at home. Once I get the licensing sorted out. So expensive. I've been pleasantly surprised with windows 8, and will be trying that out, and at least that is covered on technet. While the weather has not always been perfect during TechEd's, this is the worst I've seen it so far - it's wet outside. Next years conference in new Orleans should be interesting, well out of the conference itself that is. I do like conferences where it's held within the city itself, unlike Orlando where there isn't really anything here.

• How do I fix Google Earth 6.2.2 theme and fonts in 12.04?

  Here is the problem. I would like to know how to get Google Earth using better fonts with anti-aliasing for English and Japanese. Don't know what these fonts are but they are hideous and completely different from my system fonts or Libre Office fonts or even QT apps like VLC and MiniTube. I'm using 12.04 LTS 32bit and almost had complete success with the 11.10 fix posted here Google Earth and Skype theme the theme and fonts will show up correctly for about 5 seconds before the program crashes.

• Add a non-Google Tasks List to Chrome

  Most people rely on a task list to help them remember what they need to do but not everyone wants one that is tied to a Google account. If you have been wanting an independent tasks list then join us as we look at the Tasks extension for Google Chrome. Tasks in Action As soon as you have finished installing the extension you are ready to start adding new tasks to your list. Enter your task into the “Text Area” and press “Enter” to add the task to the list. Note: Your tasks list will be retained (in the order you set) when you close and then reopen your browser. In just moments you can have your task list ready to go. Notice that there is also a “numerical indicator” attached to the “Toolbar Button” so that you will always know how many tasks you have left to complete. You can use the “drag and drop” function to rearrange your list into a more proper order if needed. When you are finished with a task all that you will need to do is click on the “Checkmark” to remove it from the list. If you need to make a new entry similar to an existing one simply right click and the text is automatically pasted into the “Text Area”. Make any desired changes and press “Enter” to add your new task to the list. Prefer to skip using the drop-down window? Click on “Tasks” at the top to open your list in a new tab instead. The tasks list looked very nice in our new tab. Being able to use the style that best suits your needs makes this a very convenient extension. • firefox global menu problem

  I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 and I'm having problems with global menu on Firefox 16. As you can see on this screenshot: I have two titles, one for currently active window and one for firefox window, this is not the case with other apps. My global menu addon is activated, but when I deactivate it I have the same results. How to fix this? EDIT: Also I have Close/Minimize/Maximize buttons on global menu and on Firefox

• Au revoir, Python?

  I'm an ex-C++ programmer who's recently discovered (and fallen head-over-heels with) Python. I've taken some time to become reasonably fluent in Python, but I've encountered some troubling realities that may lead me to drop it as my language of choice, at least for the time being. I'm writing this in the hopes that someone out there can talk me out of it by convincing me that my concerns are easily circumvented within the bounds of the python universe. I picked up python while looking for a single flexible language that will allow me to build end-to-end working systems quickly on a variety of platforms. These include: - web services - mobile apps - cross-platform client apps for PC Development speed is more of a priority at the time-being than execution speed. However, in order to improve performance over time without requiring major re-writes or architectural changes I think it's imperative to be able to interface easily with Java. That way, I can use Java to optimize specific components as the application scales, without throwing away any code. As far as I can tell, my requirement for an enterprise-capable, platform-independent, fast language with a large developer base means it would have to be Java. .NET or C++ would not cut it due to their respective limitations. Also Java is clearly de rigeur for most mobile platforms. Unfortunately, tragically, there doesn't seem to be a good way to meet all these demands. Jython seems to be what I'm looking for in principle, except that it appears to be practically dead, with no one developing, supporting, or using it to any great degree. And also Jython seems too married to the Java libraries, as you can't use many of the CPython standard libraries with it, which has a major impact on the code you end up writing. The only other option that I can see is to use JPype wrapped in marshalling classes, which may work although it seems like a pain and I wonder if it would be worth it in the long run. On the other hand, everything I'm looking for seems to be readily available by using JRuby, which seems to be much better supported. As things stand, I think this is my best option. I'm sad about this because I absolutely love everything about Python, including the syntax. The perl-like constructs in Ruby just feel like such a step backwards to me in terms of readability, but at the end of the day most of the benefits of python are available in Ruby as well. So I ask you - am I missing something here? Much of what I've said is based on what I've read, so is this summary of the current landscape accurate, or is there some magical solution to the Python-Java divide that will snuff these concerns and allow me to comfortably stay in my happy Python place?
