• Systemd can't start script?

  I have a BASH-script I want to run on start up. My system is running systemd so I created a .service file with whith what I think is the neccessary information: [Unit] Description=My Script After=network.target [Service] ExecStart=/home/myscript.sh [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target I used systemctl enable to 'register' it an rebooted. On boot I was told my script would be executed, but I could neither see any of the messages ECHO should display on screen nor did it write something to a file, according to what I had written in the script. Additionally, It does not start the application it's supposed to start. Systemctl status tells me that the script has run and exited successfully. Still, the script has no effect. If I run the script from a shell it works perfectly fine. Do any of you know what could be my problem?

• WCF code generation for large/complex schema (HR-XML/OAGIS) - is there an alternative?

  Hello, and thank you for reading. I am implementing a WCF Service based on a predefined specification (HR-XML 3.0). As such, I am starting with the schema, and working my way back to code. There are a number of large Schema documents (which import yet more Schema documents) related to my implementation, provided by this specification. I am able to generate code using xsd.exe, by supplying the "main" and "supporting" xsd files as arguments. But there are several issues, and I am wondering if this is the right approach. there are litterally hundreds of classes - the code file is half a meg in size duplicate classes (ex. Type, Type1 - which both represent the same type) there are classes declared as inheriting from a base class, but that base class is not generated/defined I understand that there are limitations to the types of Schema supported by svcutil.exe/xsd.exe when targeting the DataContractSerializer and even XmlSerializer. My question is two-fold: Are code generation "issues" fairly common when dealing with larger, modular xsd files? Has anyone had success with generating data contracts from OAGIS or HR-XML schema? Given the above issues, are there better approaches to this task, avoiding generating code and working with concrete objects? Does it make better sence to read and compose a SOAP message directly, while still taking advantage of the rest of the WCF framework? I understand that I am loosing the convenience of working with .NET objects, and the framekwork-provided (de)serialization; given these losses, would it still be advantageous to base my Service on WCF? • using iphone to control mac

  i want to use iPhone touch screen as the touchPad for my mac while both devices are connected via bluetooth. So far i hv gone for two approaches what i want is an application which when launched turns the bluetooth on and get connected to mac.Further ...screen of iPhone becomes the touch pad for mac. i dont want to install anything at the mac like any server........ I have already tried the vnc and remotePad approach. the one with vnc looks more promising for me..but even in that case i have to install a vnc server on mac ,i guess and then we'll have to actually call vnc client while my application is still running,which does not look real in 3.2 verson as it does not support multi tasking. Is there any other way of doing it? or is there anything wrong in my above interpretation? please let me know if there is anyother approach of doing the same or if i can do any thing different with my current approach. hoping for quick response Thanks

  I have a time management application that I use at home quite a lot and have running most of the time. At home, I have a desktop PC and a couple of laptops scattered around the house...all networked together. Unfortunately, the application I use is not multi-user and I risk losing/corrupting data if it has been left running on one computer inadvertently while I start using it on another one in another part of the house. I use Live Mesh to automatically keep the application's database synced across the different computers and I just need some way of making sure that I don't start using the application on another computer before closing it down on the previous one. Anyone know of any Windows software that can detect if an application is running simultaneously on different computers on my network, and warn me if I am about to have two open at the same time?

• Script to set "Hide file extensions"

  I'm tired of the multi-step process to set my preferred folder options on every server to which I log on (Mostly Win2008, but also some 2012 and Win7 here and there). I'd love to be able to script the process, but unfortunately, I can't find any commands or extensions to do so for folder options. There are several settings I'd like to change, but in particular, I'd like to set "Hide file extensions for known file types" to false. I figure that if I can do that, I'll be able to manage any additional settings on my own. Methods that work on the vanilla command line would be preferred, but if there are commands in PowerShell, I'll use that.

• Why can't my networks reach each other?

  We have two Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH2 routers, with the default firmware, DD-WRT v24SP2-MULTI (10/31/11) std - build 17798. Each has a separate cable internet connection with a public static IP address. They are both in the 24.123.68.0/24 space. Both of them can contact pretty much the whole internet, and they can both be accessed out on the internet with no problem, but for some reason they can't talk to each other! When I try to ping one from the other I always get "Destination Host Unreachable". There are no strange routing or firewall rules in place. And they are both set to respond to pings, I can ping them from outside. Our main IT guy is going to call our ISP on Monday, but I'm impatient, so does anyone have any ideas?

• Get Active Directory Attributes for Users on Legacy Exchange Servers

  I would like to create a CSV file of the users on our Exchange 2003 servers, and include some attributes from their AD account. In particular, I would like to pull certain AD values for the users with RecipientTypeDetails = LegacyMailbox. I have tried a few different methods for targeting and filtering (ldapfilter, filter, objectAttribute, etc.) these users, with little success. The Exchange 2003 PowerPack for PowerGUI was helpful, but permissions issues and using the Exchange_Mailbox class are not challenges I want to overcome. I was finally able to create a working script, but it is very slow. The script I've created below is currently working, although it is on track to take about 4+ hours to complete. I'm am looking for suggestions for improving the efficiency of my script or otherwise obtaining this data in a quicker manner. • Why does GetWindowThreadProcessId return 0 when called from a service

  When using the following class in a console application, and having at least one instance of Notepad running, GetWindowThreadProcessId correctly returns a non-zero thread id. However, if the same code is included in a Windows Service, GetWindowThreadProcessId always returns 0 and no exceptions are thrown. Changing the user the service launches under to be the same as the one running the console application didn't alter the result. What causes GetWindowThreadProcessId to return 0 even if it is provided with a valid hwnd? And why does it function differently in the console application and the service?   Can anyone recommend an online file storage service which fulfills these requirements? I can create an account I can invite clients to upload files into my account clients do not need to register to be able to upload clients must not be able to see anything but their own files or they must not see any files at all, they get only a dropbox only I can access the uploaded files, everything is non-public service is multi-lingual I just need clients to be able to send me potentially large files in a dead simple manner online, that's all. No registration step to go through, no software to download, no synching or sharing. No setting up of individual folders and permissions for each individual client. No copying and pasting of links (a la Mediafire, Rapidshare etc).

• Shared storage solution for our sql server backups

  We have 3 clustered sql servers. We have 5+ multi terrabyte databases and their backup files (compressed using quest litespeed) are hitting over 600gb each, We are required to keep at least a week or two weeks (if we can) of weekly full backups and then 6 days differential backups, and a week or 2 weeks worth of log backups local. We are currently limited to 2TB volumes from our san team, we can have multiple volumes but they are expensive ($200 per raw TB per month) and having to deal with many backup volumes instead of a single big volume is difficult. I think if we could have a shared network storage of 20TB+ raid 10 or so for all our servers for keeping the backups and another department will copy them to tape from the network storage and delete files according to the retention period would be good, if this box would be a build in operating system (even unix a complete file storage system) that would be good. What do you guys think, does this make sense to you, is there any manufacturer that sells a storage product like that which that work in a clustered environment? Thank you

• Is SCCM overkill for medium-sized organizations?

  I am an IT technician in a high school with around 1600 students 250 staff and 800+ client computers mostly running Windows 7. Our team is composed of three members. My boss seems content with a network that works (just about) not necessarily a productive well maintained network that is easy to run and maintain. I'm still fairly early on in my I.T. career so I'm not up to speed on all the different endpoint management solutions that are available. I'm looking for a better way to manage clients (deploy software, track changes, inventory etc) I like the look of SCCM 2012's features but the case studies seem to be aimed at large multi-site infrastructural rather than a single mid sized site. Is SCCM suitable for a mid sized single site or is it aimed at much larger corporations? How can I determine whether or not an endpoint management solution like SCCM is a good fit for our organization? • Wordpress 3 mutli site install

  Hello, Trying to figure out if this is possible... My company has a cms product that was written in Java and we decided to use Wordpress to run blogs for our clients. Obviously, Wordpress does not run on tomcat(at least not by default) so we installed Pound(http://www.apsis.ch/pound/) on our server and have setup any Apache and Tomcat on different ports. When "/blog/" is requested, the request is directed to Apache. This works fine but we would like to use Wordpress multi site so that we can manage all the blogs from a single interface. We would also like the url for every site to be "/blog/" example: http://www.site1.com/blog/ http://www.site2.com/blog/ I'm thinking it would have to be done with apache??? Is it even possible?   in Windows, win+ <-- and win+ --> snap any window to the left/right side of a monitor, and if pressed again, snap the window to the other monitor, in multi-monitor environment. when a window is maximized, it will "restore" the window first, and at the next win+ <-- key the window will snap. this is very easy to use and remember. But on Linux a maximized window is not affected by win+ <-- , and the user must explicitly un-maximize it (win+down. the window is not moved to another monitor a side-snapped window cannot be resized - it behaves like a maximized window. is there another program that behaves like Windows, or I should write one by myself? (i'm using ubuntu/mint)

• Accessing WindowsXP shared printer from macbook?

  My new printer is setup on WindowsXP, it works and it is configured as a shared printer. I then setup a printer from Mac OSX 10.6.3 using the approved driver from the setup CD. I browsed for the printer via the network. When I send a test page, it queues, but never prints. Its as if the driver thinks the printer is local to the mac and just never finishes printing. THe configuration shows as: smb://dragoneye/CanonMP2 Where dragoneye is the name of the Windows XP server and the CanonMP2 is the little multi-purpose printer. My other Windows' CPU can setup and print. Is this a known problem or am I missing a setting??

• What issues might I have in opening .NET 2.0 Projects in Visual Studio 2010?

  The small software team I work on recently got approved to upgrade to Visual Studio 2010 (we're currently using VS 2005). We have several ASP.NET 2.0 and WinForms (in .NET 2.0) projects in production. I've been tasked with downloading VS 2010 and seeing how well it plays with our current projects. What issues should I be aware of when targeting older applications in VS 2010? If I open a VS 2005 project in VS 2010, will it still place nicely when my teammate goes back to open the project in VS 2005? Will we have to upgrade projects to work in VS 2010 (assuming the projects themselves aren't upgraded to .NET 4)? Can I use VS 2010 to edit legacy VB6 apps (just kidding)? I'm excited to work with the newest software, but we're concerned about running into development snags on production applications that are already working just fine. NOTE: I started a bounty in hopes of getting a more detailed answer to this question. Perhaps the answer really is as simple as those already provided, but I'm interested in more feedback regarding our options to transition from using VS 2005 to VS 2010.

• Providing high availability and failover using MySQL on EC2

  I would like to have a highly-available MySQL system, with automatic failover, running on Amazon EC2 instances. The standard approach to solving this is problem Heartbeat + DRBD, but I've found a lot of posts suggesting DRBD doesn't work on EC2, though none saying exactly why. Obviously, a serial heartbeat or distinct network is out of the question in the virtualised environment. It would also be good to have the different servers be in different availability zones, but we're getting into a much harder problem there. What are peoples' opinion on having a high uptime solution in "the cloud"? Note: This question was asked before RDS with multi-AZ was announced, which is the nice automatic answer for today's modern IT professional. :)

Can anyone here recommend a database or similar system which matches the following criteria: Intuitive to use for users with little computer experience Multi-user support, ideally with integration in our existing LDAP user directory Should have a web-interface Not a hosted solution like Picasa (because we have a rather slow internet connection with very slow upload) Should allow tagging of images, sorting by various criteria and storing copyright information If there are native GNOME and/or Windows clients for the tool, that would be a great benefit. • Supporting Piping (A Useful Hello World)

  I am trying to write a collection of simple C++ programs that follow the basic Unix philosophy by: Make each program do one thing well. Expect the output of every program to become the input to another, as yet unknown, program. I'm having an issue trying to get the output of one to be the input of the other, and getting the output of one be the input of a separate instance of itself. Very briefly, I have a program add which takes arguments and spits out the summation. I want to be able to pipe the output to another add instance. ./add 1 2 | ./add 3 4 That should yield 6 but currently yields 10. I've encountered two problems: The cin waits for user input from the console. I don't want this, and haven't been able to find a simple example showing a the use of standard input stream without querying the user in the console. If someone knows of an example please let me know. I can't figure out how to use standard input while supporting piping. Currently, it appears it does not work. If I issue the command ./add 1 2 | ./add 3 4 it results in 7. The relevant code is below: add.cpp snippet // ... • How to troubleshoot if a zip file is valid or if it is big file size to be unzipped ?

  Hello , I am trying to unzip a file with the size of 2GB I am getting the following error : unzip CLTE_C_08.zip Archive: CLTE_C_08.zip End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on the last disk(s) of this archive. unzip: cannot find zipfile directory in one of CLTE_C_08.zip or CLTE_C_08.zip.zip, and cannot find CLTE_C_08.zip.ZIP, period. After some googling, some people say that this error is because the file is too big, others say because file is corrupt, others say that it could be a not unix archive. So my question , how to find out if file is valid archive file on my Centos and what is the command/trick to uncompress big files ( if any ) Thanks in advance :)

• Appropriate Network switch for small server cluster

  Need to build a small business server cluster for the purpose of crunching data. It will not host a web site that needs to be available 24/7. It does need to support servers that host Redis, a Cassandra database cluster, and a Python web server. Operating system will most likely be Centos 6.4 Other servers in the cluster should be able to communicate very fast with each other, especially the Redis server. This will probably require the use of internal IP addresses. We will need to use multi-data center replication to synchronize the Cassandra cluster with the one that we currently have hosted on the cloud Was looking into network switches and we are unsure of the appropriate specifications that we should be looking for. Does the switch need to be "managed" or can it be "unmanged"? Does the switch need to support IPv6 or just IPv4? Do we need an enterprise level Cisco switch, or can we go with something like a $200 DLink managed (or unmanaged) small business switch? Thanks so much!
