  Hello, I'm attempting to load data from an undocumented API (OsiriX). Getting the NSManagedObject like this: NSManagedObject *itemStudy = [[BrowserController databaseOutline] itemAtRow: [[BrowserController databaseOutline] selectedRow]]; works just fine. But getting the NSManagedObject like this: seriesArray = [_context executeFetchRequest:request error:&error]; NSManagedObject *itemSeries = [seriesArray objectAtIndex:0]; Generates an error when I call [itemSeries valueForKey:@"type"] 2010-05-27 11:04:48.178 rcOsirix[27712:7b03] Exception: [<NSManagedObject 0xd30fd0> valueForUndefinedKey:]: the entity Series is not key value coding-compliant for the key "type". This confuses me thoroughly. Granted, the objects are different but neither of them contain the key @"type" and they both should throw errors, yet the Osirix code Tests for both conditions: if ([[item valueForKey:@"type"] isEqualToString:@"Series"]) { ... } if ([[item valueForKey:@"type"] isEqualToString:@"Study"]) { ... } And throws no errors. Yet when I load an NSManagedObject of the same exact model and entity @"Series" it throws the 'no key value' when passed into the conditions above. Am I missing something? Both the superentity and subentities of itemSeries and itemStudy are nil so they don't inherit from something that has KVC @"type". I'm totally at a loss as to explain what is going on. --- EDIT --- I know no one can explain what is going on... but maybe where to start looking? How would itemStudy have the extra KVC @"type" that doesn't show up in it's property list? Thank you for your assistance, -Stephen

• Confusion related to sigwait in multiprocess system

  I am having difficulty in understanding IPC in multiprocess system. I have this system where there are three child processes that send two types of signals to their process group. There are four types of signal handling processes responsible for a particular type of signal. There is this monitoring process which waits for both the signals and then processes accordingly. When I run this program for a while, the monitoring process doesn't seem to pick up the signal as well as the signal handling process. I could see in the log that the signal is only being generated but not handled at all. But later on the signal was generated a lot, but it was not quite processes in the same magnitude as before. Further I could see very less signal processing by the monitoring process Can anyone please provide some insights. What's going on?

• Compiling GCC or Clang for thumb drive on OSX

  I have a mac book that I don't have admin rights to which I would like to be able to use either GCC or clang. Since I lack admin right I can't install binutils or a compiler to /usr directory. My plan is to install both of these (using an old macbook that I do have admin rights for) to a flash drive and then run the compiler off of there. How would one go building gcc or clang so that it could run just off of a thumb drive? I've tried both but haven't had any success. I've tried doing it defining as many of the directories as possible through configure, but haven't been able to successfully build. error at build time, and a day of google searching has turned up other instances of this error caused by different triggers, and solutions for those propblems didn't work for me. I also found a single report on the Oracle forums that seemed to be a carbon copy of this issue, but there were no replies. The application is written in Weblogic Workshop 10, runs on Weblogic Server 10.3, and uses Beehive / NetUI. Not sure if that would make a difference or not though. The build scripts were automatically generated by Weblogic Workshop, with some tweaks and fixes made to other aspects of the files by myself to fix other compatability issues. I am using Java 1.6.0_23 from Sun, and Ant 1.8.1 Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

If I change AWK to GAWK and run the original script here is the output: gawk: cmd. line:11: print $1,$2, $g[i] > "output_"f[i]".csv gawk: cmd. line:11: ^ unterminated string So I edit the relevant line to fix the unterminated string print $1,$2, $g[i] > "output_"f[i]".csv" Then it runs through fine produces no errors, but there is no output files. I did everything according to the book to use SASL, or so I believe, but now only the linux command line can authenticate. My OSX users, which also use command line, and my WinXp users, which use TortoiseSVN get errors. Linux versions are 1.6.11. OSX versions are 1.6.17. • OSX Snow Leopard - Multiple httpd/apache instances for PHP 5.2 & 5.3 together

  I need to run Apache with both php 5.2 and 5.3, without other webservers such as nginx, lighttpd, etc. Just Apache HTTPD. The easiest way to have both PHP 5.2 and PHP 5.3 on Apache, on the same machine, is to have them run in different webservers (or at least different webserver instances). I already do this on windows, it works flawlessly because it is easy to specify the conf file that a specific instance loads. But how can this be achieved on Mac OSX, without ditching the web server that OSX comes with built in ? The basic is to create N-ip addresses that each apache instance will bind to, for example: 192.168.0.52 - This is for apache httpd with PHP 5.2 192.168.0.53 - This is for apache httpd with PHP 5.3 (each apache will bind to its own ip address) On OSX, i don't know how to configure HTTPD to start as multiple service/daemon, with different startup httpd.conf files!

The problem is, I only have 1 OSX Server but I have plenty of Linux servers available. I'm happy with Apple's tools that integrate with OpenDirectory, but given Apple's recent discontinuation of the XServe, I'm not particularly interested in continuing with Apple hardware. I remember hearing that OpenDirectory is (now-distantly) based off the OpenLDAP code base; is there any way I could replicate from OpenDirectory to OpenLDAP instead of having to purchase another OSX server?

  I am looking for a way to fix/debug a X11 forwarding session on OSX. Here is my situation: From my mac I connect to a Ubuntu workstation with ssh -X (tried ssh -Y as well). X11 forwarding works perfectly with firefox for instance, X11/Quartz is started automatically on OSX and firefox is displayed. X11 forwarding does not work with bat (Bacula graphical console): X11 is started but no window is displayed. There are no errors (/private/var/log/system.log). When I try doing the same from another Ubuntu workstation, it works perfectly for both firefox and bat. I guess the problem is on OSX side then. I tried switching some options in X11 but nothing works. Would you have any idea on how to move forward? Thanks!

• OSX : Setup for filestorage in medium business

  In our office every machine runs OSX. In search of an ideal storage and sharing solution we decided to let OSX Server handle all account information and auth requests whereas an 7TB QNAP provides NFS shares. All shares are published as mounts in the companywide LDAP. As it turns out, handling permissions in this situation is very clumsy (e.g. inherit permissions on newly created files). Unfortunately using NFS4 in combination with ACLs did not solve the problem. As a possible solution I set up a iSCSI connection between QNAP and the machine running OSX Server which in turn serves the LUN as AFP share. Permission handling works like a charm for this setup. Although I am a bit concerned about the performance of this setup. As we are a fast growing company we expect the solution to serve at least 100 clients while using files aprox. above 100MB each. Are there any known drawbacks of this solution?

• Apps crashing with EXC_BAD_ACCESS when changing to a custom keyboard layout

  I have a custom layout installed (svdvorak_mac6.keylayout). After a reboot another keyboard layout was selected, so I selected my usual one instead. This lead to a lot of apps suddenly starting to crash (Chrome, Skype, Adium etc). I can change to any other built in layout for OS X, but as soon as I choose one custom installed one (either form ~/Library/Keyboard Layouts/ or from /Library/Keyboard Layouts/) the apps crash. The only thing I can remember that I did before the reboot was to install Google's video chat plugin for the browser.   Hello, I have pfSense (1.2.3) with a WAN (gateway 10.10.20.1/24) and an OPT1 (gateway 10.10.21.1/24). I also have a LAN (static 10.10.12.1/24, DHCP 10.10.12.128-199/24). I want to create rules so that traffic coming from LAN go through WAN if the source IP address is below 10.10.12.128/24 and through OPT1 otherwise. I would I go and make that happen? Thanks!

• How do you maintain focus when a particular aspect of programming takes 10+ seconds to complete?

  I have a very difficult time focusing on what I'm doing (programming-wise) when something (compilation, startup time, etc.) takes more than just a few seconds. Anecdotally it seems that threshold is about 10 seconds (and I recall reading about study that said the same thing, though I can't find it now). So what typically happens is I make a change and then run the program to test it. That takes about 30 seconds, so I start reading something else, and before I know it 20 minutes have passed, and then it takes (if I'm lucky!) another 10+ minutes to deal with the context switch to getting back into programming. It's not an exaggeration to say that some things that should take me minutes literally take hours to complete. I'm very curious about what other programmers do to combat this tendency (or if I'm unique and they don't have this tendency?). Suggestions of any type at all are welcome - anything from "sit on your hands after hitting the compile button", to mental tricks, to "if it takes 30 seconds to start up something to test a change, then something's wrong with your development process!"

• How do I view application directories and directories that begin with dot in Netbeans on OSX?

  How do I view directories that begin with dot and how do I browse application directories in Netbeans? I can't seem to view directories that begin with a "dot" through the open file dialog in Netbeans. Similarly, I can't browse any application directory e.g. File-Open File-"someapp.app". Attempting to browse "someapp.app" gives the error "someapp.app is a directory". Altering or removing the regex under Preferences-Miscellaneous-File-Ignored Files Pattern has no effect; directories that begin with dot stay invisible. I'm on OSX 10.5.8 and I've tried to get this working on netbeans 6.5-6.8 to no avail. I posted this to the on the netbeans irc and mailing list but haven't heard anything back. Any help would be appreciated!
