  • Optimal size for Database partitions

    - by Adrian Mouat
Hi all, I am creating a very simple, very large Postgresql database. The database will have around 10 billion rows, which means I am looking at partitioning it into several tables. However, I can't find any information on how many partitions we should break it into. I don't know what type of queries to expect as of yet, so it won't be possible to come up with a perfect partitioning scheme, but are there any rules of thumb for partition size? Cheers, Adrian.

  • Coexisting installation of visual studio 2010 &2008

    - by yCalleecharan
Hi, I currently have MVS2008 and I want to try the 2010 version hoping that it would compile C programs faster. I would like to know if I can have a 2008 installation coexisting with a 2010 installation on the same Windows partition, without conflicts in the Windows environment variables in Win XP. Thanks a lot...

  • filesystem mounting problem

    - by user306988
Hello, A DAS box is attached to my linux box using LSI SCSI HBA. Volume is properly detected on the linux box and filesystem is created using mkfs.ext2 /dev/sdc #No partition table I can not mount the volume using mount/dev/sdc /mnt/temp -t ext3 But I can mount it using mount /dev/sdc /mnt/temp -t ext3 -o loop Can anybody please tell me what "-o loop" option does internally? Has anybody faced this option before? Thanks in advance, prashant

  • Basic concepts in file system implementation

    - by darkie15
I am a unclear about file system implementation. Specifically (Operating Systems - Tannenbaum (Edition 3), Page 275) states "The first word of each block is used as a pointer to the next one. The rest of block is data". Can anyone please explain to me the hierarchy of the division here? Like, each disk partition contains blocks, blocks contain words, and so on...

  • Msql Partitioning - Key vs Hash vs List vs Range

    - by Imran Omar Bukhsh
I went through some of the documentation of mysql but cannot understand the difference in the following ways of partitioning : Key vs Hash vs List vs Range. Can someone explain in pure english? Also we have the following table: How do we partition by forum_id? CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `posts_content` ( `id` int(11) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, `post_id` int(11) NOT NULL, `forum_id` int(11) NOT NULL, `content` longtext CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_unicode_ci NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`id`) ) ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 AUTO_INCREMENT=79850 ; Thanking you

  • NHibernate Query

    - by Nathan Roe
Is it possible to get NHibernate to generate a query similar to the following with HQL or Criteria API? select * from ( select row_number() over ( partition by Column1 order by Column2 ) as RowNumber, T.* from MyTable T ) where RowNumber = 1 I can get it to execute the inner select using the formula attribute, but I can't figure out a way to write a HQL or Criteria query that lets me wrap the inner select in the outer one.

  • How can I use cp to copy a directory but ignore a certain sub directory in Linux

    - by P Roy
Due to a Hard disk problem I am trying to shift a partition from one hard disk to another. I am following http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/library/l-partplan.html article to do that. In the copying part I would like to ignore one particular sub directory. How can I accomplish that keeping in mind when copying I have to preserve my owner group and time stamp. There is around 700 GB of data that needs to be copied if I do not ignore a particular subdirectory.

  • Running resize2fs on /

    - by Paul Steckler
I'm trying to resize an ext4 filesystem on a Fedora 11 box. Using fsdisk and lvm, I was able to grow the partition and logical volume containing the filesystem. When I try to run resize2fs on the device containing the filesystem (/dev/sda2 in this case), I get: "Device or resource busy while trying to open /dev/sda2, Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock" I've tried this from a rescue disk that doesn't have the filesystem mounted, no joy. Maybe resize2fs doesn't know about ext4?

  • Windows repair console, impossible?

    - by Daniel
I found an old Windows XP SP2 in my -trash- cd can and tried it on a 30 GB FAT32 partition. Installation went fine till the copying operation was completed and XP asked for reboot. After that either it starts over again or throws invalid disk. Starting over is an infinite loop the only way I see is to choose the "Repair console" but I'm not used to a DOS box. Can anyone help me through this harmful installation?

  • c++ quick sort running time

    - by chnet
    I have a question about quick sort algorithm. I implement quick sort algorithm and play it. The elements in initial unsorted array are random numbers chosen from certain range. I find the range of random number effects the running time. For example, the running time for 1, 000, 000 random number chosen from the range (1 - 2000) takes 40 seconds. While it takes 9 seconds if the 1,000,000 number chosen from the range (1 - 10,000). But I do not know how to explain it. In class, we talk about the pivot value can effect the depth of recursion tree. For my implementation, the last value of the array is chosen as pivot value. I do not use randomized scheme to select pivot value. int partition( vector<int> &vec, int p, int r) { int x = vec[r]; int i = (p-1); int j = p; while(1) { if (vec[j] <= x){ i = (i+1); int temp = vec[j]; vec[j] = vec[i]; vec[i] = temp; } j=j+1; if (j==r) break; } int temp = vec[i+1]; vec[i+1] = vec[r]; vec[r] = temp; return i+1; } void quicksort ( vector<int> &vec, int p, int r) { if (p<r){ int q = partition(vec, p, r); quicksort(vec, p, q-1); quicksort(vec, q+1, r); } } void random_generator(int num, int * array) { srand((unsigned)time(0)); int random_integer; for(int index=0; index< num; index++){ random_integer = (rand()%10000)+1; *(array+index) = random_integer; } } int main() { int array_size = 1000000; int input_array[array_size]; random_generator(array_size, input_array); vector<int> vec(input_array, input_array+array_size); clock_t t1, t2; t1 = clock(); quicksort(vec, 0, (array_size - 1)); // call quick sort int length = vec.size(); t2 = clock(); float diff = ((float)t2 - (float)t1); cout << diff << endl; cout << diff/CLOCKS_PER_SEC <<endl; }

  • Memory efficient int-int dict in Python

    - by Bolo
    Hi, I need a memory efficient int-int dict in Python that would support the following operations in O(log n) time: d[k] = v # replace if present v = d[k] # None or a negative number if not present I need to hold ~250M pairs, so it really has to be tight. Do you happen to know a suitable implementation (Python 2.7)? EDIT Removed impossible requirement and other nonsense. Thanks, Craig and Kylotan! To rephrase. Here's a trivial int-int dictionary with 1M pairs: >>> import random, sys >>> from guppy import hpy >>> h = hpy() >>> h.setrelheap() >>> d = {} >>> for _ in xrange(1000000): ... d[random.randint(0, sys.maxint)] = random.randint(0, sys.maxint) ... >>> h.heap() Partition of a set of 1999530 objects. Total size = 49161112 bytes. Index Count % Size % Cumulative % Kind (class / dict of class) 0 1 0 25165960 51 25165960 51 dict (no owner) 1 1999521 100 23994252 49 49160212 100 int On average, a pair of integers uses 49 bytes. Here's an array of 2M integers: >>> import array, random, sys >>> from guppy import hpy >>> h = hpy() >>> h.setrelheap() >>> a = array.array('i') >>> for _ in xrange(2000000): ... a.append(random.randint(0, sys.maxint)) ... >>> h.heap() Partition of a set of 14 objects. Total size = 8001108 bytes. Index Count % Size % Cumulative % Kind (class / dict of class) 0 1 7 8000028 100 8000028 100 array.array On average, a pair of integers uses 8 bytes. I accept that 8 bytes/pair in a dictionary is rather hard to achieve in general. Rephrased question: is there a memory-efficient implementation of int-int dictionary that uses considerably less than 49 bytes/pair?

  • How bad is it to use a virtual file system with VMWare? [closed]

    - by user30997
IT is running a series of VMs that we'd like to see optimized further: if the VMs' are Windows XP, storing their NTFS images out to the virtual disk (ext3) provided by Linux/VMWare, how much of a hit are we taking - as opposed to having a partition of the host hard drive formatted NTFS to eliminate the translation layer and the extra level of operating system IO preparation?

  • Postgresql performance on EC2/EBS

    - by matija
What gives best performance for running PostgreSQL on EC2? EBS in RAID? PGData on /mnt? Do you have any preferences or experiences? Main "plus" for running pgsql on EBS is switching from one to another instances. Can this be the reason to be slower that /mnt partition? PS. im running postgresql 8.4 with datas/size about 50G, amazon ec2 xlarge(64) instance.

  • What is the best Linux distribution as a Xen host?

    - by St3fan
I ordered a server for the home office and I would like to partition it with Xen. I think this will keep things clean and easier to maintain. I will be running things like MySQL, PostgreSQL, Tomcat and my own code on this machine. My question is: what freely available Linux distribution has the best Xen hosting facilities?
