  • ASP can't connect to SQL Server database

    I'm trying to get a classic ASP application to connect to a local SQL Server 2008 database. The app and database were built by someone else. I'm just trying to get them installed and running on my machine (Windows 7). I'm getting the following error when when the ASP app tries to connect to the database: Could not connect to database: Error Number: -2147467259 Error Message: [ConnectionOpen (Connect()).] does not exist or access denied. I don't see any messages in the Windows Event Viewer. I'm looking at: Event Viewer-Windows Logs-Application. It's a fresh database install using a simple restore. The SQL Server install uses the default instance. SQL Server and Windows authentication are both allowed. I left the existing connection string (in the ASP code) in tact and just tried adding that to my SQL Server installation. Here's the connection string: strConn = "PROVIDER=SQLOLEDB;SERVER=localhost;UID=TheUser;PWD=ThePassword;DATABASE=TheDatabase;" To add that user to SQL Server, I went to Security/Logins in SSMS and added the user and the password. I selected the database in question as the Default database. I thought that might do the trick, but it didn't. Then, I went into TheDatabase, then went into Security there. I added a new user there, referencing the new user I had already added in server Security. Under Owned Schemas, I clicked db_owner and under Role Members I checked db_accessadmin and db_owner. None of this gave the ASP application access to the database. The sid values match in sys.database_principals and sys.server_principals for the login in question. I am able to login to SSMS using this login. The app needs to execute selects against the database like this: oConn.Execute('select * from someTable') I'm not a DBA and am sort of grasping at straws here. How do I get this thing connected?   • Restore history and current page on resuming webview

    I have a webview that I use to navigate from page to page. I have implemented go back and go forward. My problem is that when I return to the webview after visiting another activity, the history is lost i.e. the webview starts again on the first page. How do I code it so that after I call finish on the webview to swap to another activity on returning to the webview, the WebBackForwardList is restored and I am taken to the page I was on when I left the webview? I have tried overriding onSaveInstanceState and onRestoreInstanceState using webview.save/restoreState(bundle) but with no success. I have achieved returning to the last page by saving the last url in preferences, but have been unable to restore the entire history.

    I came to a situation where I need to edit the following in a way that, on some event (lets assume the 'click' event in this case) I need to remove (or unwrap?) the .container and the .header and have the .itemlist still visible/available on the page. And then, I need to restore .container and .header back again on some other event, while still maintain the event listeners on the a tags, and if possible, without removing the said items from the DOM.   • script to dynamically fix ophaned users after db restore

    After performing a database restore, I want to run a dynamic script to fix ophaned users. My script below loops through all users that are displayed after executing sp_change_users_login 'report' and apply "alter user [username] with login = [username]" to fix SID conflicts verses static go statements. Although, I'm getting an "incorrect syntax error on line 15." can't figure out why...   • Best way to fix an out-of-sync TFS workspace after a back-up/restore

    Wednesday I had to restore from a back-up image I made on Monday. At the time of the snapshot I had about 20 files modified, which I later checked in, and more, on Tuesday. Now that I am back to a snapshot from Monday morning, my workspace has all of these files checked-out or added, etc. even my check-in comments and work-item associations. But I already did that check-in on Tuesday. I'm thinking I will shelve all the pending changes (just in-case), and then just undo all changes, and get latest (specific version). And I should be back to good. Any cautions or suggestions? (TFS 2008, VS2010)

    Okay, this is really weird. I made a simple database with a single table, Customer, which has a single column, Name. From the database I auto-generated an ADO.NET Entity Data Model, and I'm trying to add a new Customer to it like so: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; namespace Test { class Program { static void Main() { Database1Entities db = new Database1Entities(); Customer c = new Customer(); c.Name = "Harry"; db.AddToCustomer(c); db.SaveChanges(); } } } But it doesn't persist Customer "Harry" to the database! I've been scratching my head for a while now wondering why such a simple operation doesn't work. What on earth could be the problem!?

    Hello, An example would set the context right, the example below captures the various states of the entity, which needs to be reverted(rolled back) . State 1 - Recorded on 01-Mar-2010 Column1 Column2 Data1 0.56 State 2 - Recorded on 02-Mar-2010 Column1 Column2 Data1 0.57 State 3 - Recorded on 03-Mar-2010 Column1 Column2 Data1 0.58 User notices that state3 is not what he intended to be in, decides to revert back to state2. One approach that I can think of, without modifying the entity is via "auditing" all the inserts/updates, as below, the rollback information captures the data just before the updates/modifications on the entity, so that it can be applied in an order when you need to revert.Please note that changing the entity's schema, is not an option. Rollback - R1 recorded on 01-Mar-2010 Column1 Column2 Data1 0.56 Rollback - R2 Recorded on 02-Mar-2010 Column1 Column2 Data1 0.56 Rollback - R3 Recorded on 03-Mar-2010 Column1 Column2 Data1 0.57 So, to get to state2 , we would start with rollback information R1,apply R2 onto it.   • Login fails when recreating database with Code First

    I'm using ASP.NET Entity Framework's Code First to create my database from the model, and the login seems to fail when the database needs to be recreated after the model changes. In Global.asax, I've got the following: protected void Application_Start() { Database.SetInitializer(new DropCreateDatabaseIfModelChanges<EntriesContext>()); // ... } In my controller, I've got the following: public ActionResult Index() { // This is just to force the database to be created var context = new EntriesContext(); var all = (from e in context.Entries select e).ToList(); } When the database doesn't exist, it is created with no problems. However, when I make a change to the model, rebuild and refresh, I get the following error: Login failed for user 'sa'. My connection string looks like this: <add name="EntriesContext" connectionString="Server=(LOCAL);Database=MyDB;User Id=sa;Password=password" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> The login definitely works as I can connect to the server and the database from Management Studio using these credentials. If I delete the database manually, everything works correctly and the database is recreated as expected with the schema reflecting the changes made to the model. It seems like either the password or access to the database is being lost. Is there something else I need to do to get this working?

  • Is it better to store user text (such as a blog entry or private messages) in the database or as flat files?

    I'm building a social networking type site that will be storing large chunks of text that's entered by users, such as blog entries and private messages. As such, these will be entered once, with minimal revisions, but many reads by multiple users over time. I'm using MySQL, by the way. My concerns are: Storing large blocks of text on the database will fill the database to capacity eventually. I read somewhere that storing user text in flat files is a security risk? (The filenames will be generated dynamically by the PHP, not by the user.) Storing them as text files may cause them to become out of sync if I ever have to reinitialize the database and restore it from backups. What are all your thoughts and advice, pros and cons?

    I'm running MySql 5.1. I have Master and a Slave on 2 machines and I set up replication. I do periodic backup on my slave server. I stop mysql, I copy all the files and I restart mysql. In case I lose the Master, I can set up a new one from the last backup. What If I lose the Slave? Can I restart the slave from the last backup? Am I supposed to keep track of the position of the replication every time I to a backup?
