• MySQL for Excel new features (1.2.0): Save and restore Edit sessions

  Today we are going to talk about another new feature included in the latest MySQL for Excel release to date (1.2.0) which can be Installed directly from our MySQL Installer downloads page.Since the first release you were allowed to open a session to directly edit data from a MySQL table at Excel on a worksheet and see those changes reflected immediately on the database. You were also capable of opening multiple sessions to work with different tables at the same time (when they belong to the same schema). The problem was that if for any reason you were forced to close Excel or the Workbook you were working on, you had no way to save the state of those open sessions and to continue where you left off you needed to reopen them one by one. Well, that's no longer a problem since we are now introducing a new feature to save and restore active Edit sessions. All you need to do is in click the options button from the main MySQL for Excel panel:  And make sure the Edit Session Options (highlighted in yellow) are set correctly, specially that Restore saved Edit sessions is checked: Then just begin an Edit session like you would normally do, select the connection and schema on the main panel and then select table you want to edit data from and click over Edit MySQL Data. and just import the MySQL data into Excel:You can edit data like you always did with the previous version. To test the save and restore saved sessions functionality, first we need to save the workbook while at least one Edit session is opened and close the file.Then reopen the workbook. Depending on your version of Excel is where the next steps are going to differ:Excel 2013 extra step (first): In Excel 2013 you first need to open the workbook with saved edit sessions, then click the MySQL for Excel Icon on the the Data menu (notice how in this version, every time you open or create a new file the MySQL for Excel panel is closed in the new window). Please note that if you work on Excel 2013 with several workbooks with open edit sessions each at the same time, you'll need to repeat this step each time you open one of them: Following steps:  In Excel 2010 or previous, you just need to make sure the MySQL for Excel panel is already open at this point, if its not, please do the previous step specified above (Excel 2013 extra step). For Excel 2010 or older versions you will only need to do this previous step once.  When saved sessions are detected, you will be prompted what to do with those sessions, you can click Restore to continue working where you left off, click Discard to delete the saved sessions (All edit session information for this file will be deleted from your computer, so you will no longer be prompted the next time you open this same file) or click Nothing to continue without opening saved sessions (This will keep the saved edit sessions intact, to be prompted again about them the next time you open this workbook): And there you have it, now you will be able to save your Edit sessions, close your workbook or turn off your computer and you will still be able to reopen them in the future, to continue working right where you were. Today we talked about how you can save your active Edit sessions and restore them later, this is another feature included in the latest MySQL for Excel release (1.2.0). • Is there a bug with Apache 2.2 and content filters (and maybe mod_proxy)?

  I'm running Apache 2.2.15-29 on RHEL 6 (actually Scientific Linux 6.4) and I'm trying to set up a reverse proxy with content rewriting so all of the links on the proxied web pages are rewritten to reference the proxy host. I'm running into a problem with some of the content rewriting and I'd like to know if this is a bug or if I'm doing something wrong (and how to do it right, if applicable). I'm proxying a subdirectory on an internal host (internal.example.com/foo) onto the root of an external host (external.example.com). I need to rewrite HTML, CSS, and Javascript content to fix all of the URLs. I'm also hosting some content locally on the external host, which I don't think is a problem but I'm mentioning here for completeness. When I use either mod_substitute or mod_ext_filter, the external server sends the pages as Transfer-Encoding: chunked, sends all of the data, and then closes the connection without sending the final, zero-length chunk. Some HTTP clients are unhappy with this. (Chrome won't process any content sent in this way, for example, so the pages don't get CSS applied to them.) • Something about Property Management or &hellip; the understanding of SharePoint Admins/roles ?!?

  When I talk about SharePoint, for some reason it comes to my mind as if it were property management and all the tasks associated with it. So, imagine you have a lot ( a piece of land of sorts), you then decide there is something you want to do with it.  So, you make the choice of having a building built.  Now, in order to go forward with your plan, you need to check what the rules/regulations are.  Has is it been zoned residential, commercial, industrial … you get the idea.  This to me sounds like Governance.  The what am I to do given a defined set of rules. We keep on moving forward based on those rules.  And with this we start the process of building, the building process takes us to survey the land, identify what our boundaries are.  And as we go along we start getting the idea in our head as to what we will do as far as the building goes.  We identify the essentials of the building, basic services and such.  All in all, we plan.  And as with many things we do, we like solid foundations.  What a solid foundation looks like will depend on where and what we build.  The way buildings are built depends in many ways in being able to foresee the potential for natural disasters or to try to leverage the lay of the land.  Sound familiar?  We have done our Requirements Gathering. We have the building in place, we have followed the zoning rules, we have implemented services.  But we need someone to manage the building, now we move on to the human side of the story.  We want to establish a means to normalcy in the building, someone that can be the monitoring agent as to the “what’s going on?” of it.  This person will be tasked with making sure all basic services are functional, that measures are taken if there is an issue and so on.  Enter the Farm Administrator. In a way, we establish an extension of the rules to make sure the building and the apartments/offices build follow a standard set of rules too. Now, in turn you will have people leasing or buying the apartments/offices, they will be the keepers of that space.  So, now we are building sites, we have moved from having the building (farm) ready, to leasing/selling offices/apartments (site collections).  There will be someone assuming responsibility for those offices, that person will authorize or be informed about activities and also who not only gets a code into the building, but perhaps a key to the office.  Enter Site Collection Administrator.  And then perhaps we move on to the person that would be responsible for specifics within the office, for example a Human Resources Manager or Coordinator.  They will have specific control and knowledge about people.  A facilities coordinator, and so on.  I would translate that into Site Administrators. With that said then, we identify the following: Role Name Responsibility (but not limited to) Farm Administrator Infrastructure Site Collection Admin Policies for Content, Hierarchy, Recycle Bin, Security and Access Site Owner (Site Admin) Security and Access, Training, Guidance, Manage Templates All in all there are different levels of responsibility to be handled, but it is very important to understand what they are and what they mean. • Server compromised. Bounce message contains many email addresses message was not sent to

  This is not a dupe. Please read and understand the issue before marking this as a duplicate question that has been answered already. Several customers are reporting bounce messages like the one below. At first I thought their computers had a virus but then I received one that was server generated so the problem is with the server. I've inspected the logs and these email addresses do not appear in the logs. • Are Chromebooks the New Netbooks, and What Does That Mean?

  Netbooks — small, cheap, slow laptops — were once very popular. They fell out of favor — people bought them because they seemed cheap and portable, but the actual experience was lackluster. Most netbooks now sit unused. Windows netbooks have vanished from stores today, but there’s a new super-cheap laptop — the Chromebook. Chromebook sales numbers are impressive, but their usage statistics tell a different story. Are Chromebooks just the new netbook? The Problem With Netbooks Netbooks seemed appealing, especially in an age before tablets and lightweight ultrabooks. You could buy a netbook for $200 or so and have a portable device that let you get on the Internet. The name “netbook” spelled that out — it was a portable device for getting on the ‘net. They weren’t really that great. The original netbook was a lightweight Asus Eee PC that ran Linux alone and had a small amount of fast flash storage. Netbooks eventually ran heavier Windows XP operating systems — Windows Vista was out, but it was just too bloated to run on netbooks. Manufacturers added slow magnetic hard drives, bloatware, and even DVD drives! They couldn’t run most Windows software very well. The build quality was poor and their keyboards were tiny and cramped. People liked the idea of a lightweight device that let them get on the Internet and loved the cheap price, but the actual experience wasn’t great. Chromebook Sales Chromebook sales numbers seem surprisingly high. NPD reported that Chromebooks were 21% of all notebooks sold in the US in 2013. If you combine laptop and tablet sales into a single statistic, Chromebooks were 9.6% of all those devices sold. That’s 2/3 as many Chromebooks sold as iPads in the US! Of Amazon’s best-selling laptop computers, two of the top three are Chromebooks. These definitely look like successful products. Unlike netbooks, Chromebooks are taking off in a big way in the education market. Many schools are buying Chromebooks for their students instead of more expensive Windows laptops. They’re easier to manage and lock down than Windows laptops, but — more importantly for cash-strapped schools — they’re very cheap. Netbooks never had this sort of momentum in schools. Chromebook Usage Statistics Here’s where the rosy picture of Chromebooks starts to become more realistic. StatCounter’s browser usage statistics show how widely used different operating systems are. For example, Windows 7 has the highest share with 35.71% of web activity in April, 2014. The chart doesn’t even show Chrome OS at all, although there is an “Other” number near the bottom. Click the Download Data link to download a CSV file and we can view more detailed information. Chrome OS only accounted for 0.38% of web usage in April, 2014. Desktop Linux, which people often shrug at, accounted for 1.52% in the same month. To its credit, Chrome OS usage has increased. Chromebooks were widely mocked back in November, 2013 when the sales numbers came out. After all, they only accounted for 0.11% of web usage globally in November, 2013! But Chrome OS numbers have been improving: Nov, 2013: 0.11% Dec, 2013: 0.22% Jan, 2014: 0.31% Feb, 2014: 0.35% Mar, 2014: 0.36% Apr, 2014: 0.38% Chrome OS is climbing, but it’s definitely still in the “Other” category. It isn’t as high as we’d expect to see it with those types of sales numbers. Chromebooks vs. Netbooks Chromebooks are more limited devices than traditional PCs. You can do quite a few things, but you have to do it all using Chrome or Chrome apps. Most people won’t be enabling developer mode and installing a Linux desktop. You don’t have access to the powerful desktop software available for Windows and even Mac OS X. On the other hand, these Chromebooks are less compromised than netbooks in many ways. They come with a lightweight operating system designed for portable, mobile devices. They don’t come packed with any bloatware, like the bloatware you’ll find on competing Windows PCs and the original netbooks. They’re cheaper because the manufacturer doesn’t have to pay for a Windows license. There’s no need for antivirus software weighing the operating system down. They’re larger than the original netbooks, with many of them being 11.6-inches instead of the original 8-inch bodies many older netbooks came with. They have larger, more comfortable keyboards and fast solid-state storage. Really, Chromebooks are what netbooks wanted to be. People didn’t buy netbooks to use typical Windows software — they just wanted a lightweight PC. Of course, for many people, the real successor to netbooks is tablets. If all you want is a portable device to throw in a bag so you can get online, maybe a tablet is better. Where Does This Leave Chromebooks? So, are Chromebooks the new netbooks? It’s a bit early to answer that question. Chromebooks are definitely not out of the competition — their sales look good and their usage share is increasing. On the other hand, Chrome OS is still pretty far behind. They’re not catching fire like tablets did. Maybe netbooks were just before their time and Chromebooks were what they were always meant to be. Just as Microsoft’s Windows XP tablets failed, Windows XP netbooks also failed. Tablets took off with a more refined operating system on better hardware years later. “Netbooks” — or Chromebooks — are now taking off with a more purpose-built operating system on better hardware, too. It’s hard to count Chromebooks out because they provide a much better experience than netbooks ever did. If you’re one of the people who wants to use old Windows desktop apps on your portable laptop, you may think netbooks were better — but most people don’t want that. But maybe people either want a full desktop PC experience or a full mobile tablet experience. Is there a place for a laptop with a keyboard that can only view websites? We’ll have to wait and see. • How much sense does it make for a veteran .Net developer to move to ROR professionally?

  Hi, I consider myself a moderately skilled (definitely not stupid) .Net developer. Over the past 5 years I've been working with ASP.Net, ASP.Net MVC, SharePoint, WPF, Silverlight, RDBMS (SQL Server and Oracle). I maintain/contribute a couple of .Net OSS. I've also picked up F# and Haskell over the previous year. I am currently employed at one of the better (best) software firms out there and would surely love to continue working here. However over the past 6 months opportunities in .Net have mostly dried up and all new work is headed towards ROR (and whatever is left towards Java). I have never been apprehensive about learning a new stack/language for fun and have previously picked up Haskell and Python in my free time. I am however apprehensive as to what impact moving to a new entirely different stack would have on my career. What would you do: Change jobs if you don't find anything on .Net soon. Try out the ROR stack for some time. If you find that its not your cup of tea, move back. (How would this impact my career and job opportunities in the longer run?) Also it would be very helpful if there are any ASP.Net MVC folks who have switched over to ROR professionally who can share their experiences. Edit: I have not done any development on a *nix box before. I've however used Ubuntu for fun and games. Sorry if this sounds subjective.

• Unable to Update Sharepoint Document Properties : Required Fields are Empty.

  Hi, I am updating Documents on Sharepoint using List.asmx web service. But problem i am facing is: Fields are not getting Updated as some of required fields are not added. But to fill required fields i have to again Update. "ID" field is compulsary at the time of Update. Which we get only after uploading Document.( we get this id by "ows_id" attriute value) Edit : As said by "Janis Veinbergs" We can't get this ID untill document is actualy saved. So how will i update document as ID field is must for Update. If i don't Put ID Field : Error : 0x8102000aInvalid URL Parameter The URL provided contains an invalid Command or Value. Please check the URL again. If i put Null Value to it: Error :0x81020016Item does not exist The page you selected contains an item that does not exist. It may have been deleted by another user. • SharePoint Permissions: User with Contribute change cannot change a list item they did not create?

  I've build a custom SharePoint list that programatically adjusts permissions per list item. This part of the app works by clearing all permissions in the list item and adding permissions to the folks I want to grant Read or Contribute permission to. I believe this part of the application to be correct: selecting Manage Permissions on a list item I can see the appropriate users and roles for the list items in question in the Permissions list. However, I was surprised to realize that only the user who submitted a list item can successfully edit the item. I'll describe what I'm seeing with the following two users: UserA and UserB. UserA submitted the list item. UserB is trying to edit the same list item after the permissions have been assigned (either manually or programatically). UserB cannot edit the list item: UserB can see the Edit Item link on the item toolbar. UserB can click the link and will see EditForm.aspx. When UserB makes changes and presses submit, UserB encounters the out of box SharePoint "Access Denied" error page. The event handler for the list item update does not fire. Manually elevating UserB's permission to include Full Control does not affect the behavior above. By contrast, UserA encounters far more predictable behavior: UserA can see the Edit Item link on the item toolbar. UserA can click the link and will see EditForm.aspx. When UserA submits, the changes are persisted and the user is redirected back to the item list. Event Handlers fire after UserA submits. This leaves me with several questions: Is this an expected behavior for SharePoint that I managed to overlook? What can I do to allow UserB to modify the list item?

• Watchguard Firewall - Issues with SSLVPN

  I have a client who has a WatchGuard XTM 23 device on site as their primary firewall. I just upgraded its firmware a couple days ago to the latest version for that series, 11.6.6. The problem is that I haven't successfully been able to setup a VPN connection for them. Using the instructions at http://www.watchguard.com/help/docs/webui/11_XTM/en-US/index.html#en-US/mvpn/ssl/configure_fb_for_mvpn_ssl_c.html, I'm trying to setup a VPN with SSL connection: From the firewall web GUI / Dashboard, I go to VPN - Mobile VPN with SSL, I enable it, add the organization's public IP address to which the firewall is connected. I've setup a group in Active Directory named "SSLVPN-Users", verified that the WatchGuard box can talk to the Active Directory Server, and added myself to that group. I then downloaded the WatchGuard Mobile VPN with SSL client onto my own Windows 7 machine, walked to the client's 2nd building across the street (which has a different public internet connection), and tried to connect to the VPN. When I do try to connect with the client, I get the following errors: 2013-06-24T15:41:32.119 Launching WatchGuard Mobile VPN with SSL client. Version 11.6.0 (Build 343814) Built:Jun 13 2012 01:42:55 2013-06-24T15:41:37.595 Requesting client configuration from 184.174.143.176:443 2013-06-24T15:41:50.106 FAILED:Cannot perform http request, timeout 12002 2013-06-24T15:41:50.106 failed to get domain name I discovered today the Firebox System Manager, and its "Traffic Monitor" which gives current log information (refreshes every 5 seconds). Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the client has setup any sort of WatchGuard / Firebox logging server, so actually recording server-side logs to file hasn't been done. I can work on implementing that if I need to. I noticed that if I try to ping the client's public IP address from an outside source, I don't get a response back (unless I added a policy into the firewall to allow ICMP traffic from "External", which I successfully did a few seconds ago for testing purposes - that rule has since been reverted to not respond to external ping requests). There's a policy in the firewall for allowing SSLVPN Traffic authentication requests coming from any external source TO the Firebox, and then to do the authentication / actually allow the VPN traffic, there's a policy allowing traffic for anyone in the SSLVPN-Users group to flow between that user and the inside network. So my questions are: Has anyone seen these errors before from the Watchguard VPN Client, and/or do you have any suggestions on how I can resolve that error? If I need to setup logging server to grab the firewall logs (in order to further troubleshoot this issue), how complicated a task is that and does it require a lot of system resources? The organization I'm consulting with only has 1 server and not a lot of resources or technical know-how.

  When I set a program to open a specific file type by default, it works (like Word 2013 for PDFs). However, when I change the default back to reader, I lose Word as an option that I can pick in the open with sub-menu. How can I get it to stick? Update: It seems that there is something special about word. Adding Notepad++ as the default and then changing it back seems to keep notepad++ on the sub-menu. Word version is 2013

• LXC container can only access host via bridge

  I have an LXC container with i686 Ubuntu 12.04 running on a x86_64 Ubuntu 12.04 host. I've set up a bridge using instructions here. However the ping from the container only goes through to the host and not to other machines on the local network. Similarly only the host and not the other machines see the container OS. • VIM "upgraded" to expandtab and tabstop=8 on Python files

  After reinstalling my OS from Kubuntu 12.10 to Kubuntu 14.04, VIM has changed its behaviour when editing Python files. Though before the reinstall all file types had noexpandtab and tabstop=4 set, now in Python those values are expandtab and tabstop=8, checked also via VIM behaviour and also via asking VIM set foo?. Non-Python files retain the noexpandtab and tabstop=4 behaviour that I prefer. The .vim direcotry and .vimrc were not touched during the reinstall. I tried to copy only the new records from the remote_table by this query: SELECT * FROM [remote_DB].[LudanProjectManager].[dbo].Remote_table EXCEPT SELECT * FROM My_table It works OK but I get a duplicate primary key exception when changes have been made on the remote_table on the hours column. Can anyone think of a way to copy only the new records from remote_table and if changes has been made on old records, to identify them and update the my_table to correspond?
