• MYSQL autoincrement a column or just have an integer, difference?

  Hi, If I have a column, set as primary index, and set as INT. If I don't set it as auto increment and just insert random integers which are unique into it, does that slow down future queries compared to autincrementing? Does it speed things up if I run OPTIMIZE on a table with its primary and only index as INT? (assuming only 2 columns, and second column is just some INT value) (the main worry is the upper limit on the autoincrement as theres lots of adds and deletes in my table)

  I have a neural network written in Java which uses a sigmoid transfer function defined as follows: private static double sigmoid(double x) { return 1 / (1 + Math.exp(-x)); } and this is called many times during training and computation using the network. Is there any way of speeding this up? It's not that it's slow, it's just that it is used a lot, so a small optimisation here would be a big overall gain.

  how do you effectively debug on live server in rails, whether on a beta/production server? I tried modifying the file directly on the server, and restarting the app, but the changes does not seem to take effect, or takes a long time to (caching?) I also tried to do "script/server production" locally, but that is very slow The other option is to code and deploy, but that is very inefficient. Anyone has any insights as to how they do this efficiently?

  Hi all, im trying to get image size(DIMENSIONS) of hundreds of remote images and getimagesize is way too slow. ive done some reading and found out the quickest way would be to use get_file_contents to read a certain aount of bytes from the images and examining the size within the binary data. The performance needs improvement so we've profiled the application and found that increasing the 'batch size' of the update will improve performance. I also know that if I load the entire data set into memory the application will start hitting swap and slow down. The question is: how big is a System.Data.DataRow derived class? I'd like to calculate a batch size which I know won't force the application into swap.

• Best way to update record X when Y is inserted

  I have a huge table that is mainly used for backup and administrative purposes. The only records that matters is the last inserted record. On every hit to order by time inserted is just too slow. I want keep a separate table with the last inserted id. In PHP I now insert, get last inserted id, and update the other table. Is there a more efficient way to do this.
