• SQL Server 2005 Fail: Return Dates As Strings

  Hello all, I am using the SQL Server PHP Driver, I think this question can be answered without knowing what this is. I have come across this many times, what does it mean by NAMES? Column names?: SET NAMES utf8 Is there a query similar to the above that will get my dates to be returned as a string? For some reason on my SQL Sever 2008 on Vista, this works: $connectionInfo = array('Database' => $dbname, 'ReturnDatesAsStrings' => true) But the above 'ReturnDatesAsStrings' does not work on my SQL Server 2005 on a windows server machine? I can't execute any queries after setting the above! Does SQL Server 2005 support ReturnDatesAsStrings? Is there some other parameter I can pass to do the same? Thanks all for any help EDIT I should of mentioned this but if there is a solution I am hoping for one that is in the form of a setting that can be set before any queries can be executed as I do not have control on what queries will be executed.

• Programmatically adding a site to the Allowed Sites of the IE Pop-up Blocker (VB.NET)

  A few more details. I need to programmatically (Winforms, VB.NET) check if a site is in the Allowed Sites list of the IE Pop-Up Blocker (IE 7 and 8 and Windows XP, Vista and 7) and if not, add it. The application is fully trusted and I don't want to disable the Pop-Up blocker entirely. To clarify some things, this is for a web-automation application with several users across 3 countries. I want to avoid receiving tons of emails and explaining each time how to add the website to the Allowed Sites manually. Also, some of the users have Google Toolbar installed, which also has a Popup Blocker creating trouble to my app. Can this also be done programmatically?

• Adding an host programmatically (name resolution under Windows)

  I would like to programmatically add to Windows a name / IP association so that this name can be resolved locally. This does not have to be persisted between reboots. The only way I now is to add an entry to the "hosts" file, but this feels hacky especially since I would like to automate this. Is there any way to do this using a command-line tool or a Win32 API? Perhaps by addind an entry to Windows DNS cache or something similar? Oh, and please state if this solution is Vista-compatible. Regards. Edit : Thanks, guy. Sadly, all of your answers indeed involve DNS or other servers. I was looking for a purely local solution which would work on a "standard" Windows installation. Such a thing does not seem to exist, though.

• Pros / Cons displaying list of users at login page

  We seem to have a lot of clients asking us to change the login screen in this manner: Display a list of all available users (thumbnail picture + name) User selects a username from the list A password prompt appears near the username User enters password then presses enter This sounds remarcably similar to the Windows XP login, which is probably where they got the ideea in the first place. There are only about 4 - 5 different users that can login at any given station, so implementing that list on one screen is feasable. So I was wondering if there are any usability experts with some word on this method of login. As far as I can tell, MS droped this behaviour in Vista/Win7, didn't they?

• Strange problem with VSS: VSS doesn't work after 5 p.m.

  I have a very strange problem with Visual Source Safe. I use VSS as a add-on with VS 2008 in a corporate intranet with 5 other colleagues. My VS stops working after 5 p.m. most of days with complaining can not connect Source Safe. I'm running VS 2008 and VSS 2005 on Vista and no other one in corporate have such a problem. What do you think about its cause? Is there any log for VSS?

• Installing PostgreSQL on Windows

  I'm in a bit of a mess here. I installed PostgreSQL on my Vista computer a couple of days ago but then when asked to enter the password for the postgre user account I couldn't remember it (allegedly I was asked during setup but I don't remember that). Anyway, so I uninstalled Pg with the intention of reinstalling it, removed the user account, it's /Users/ directory and it's special privelleges ("Advanced user profile properties") but when I come to install Pg it seems to think the account still exists as when I supply a password during setup it says that it is not the correct password - meaning that the account still exists somewhere. Is there anyway I can recover this?

• Installing Refinery CMS on Windows

  Hi all, I cannot get Refinery cms to install on my crappy Vista machine. I have followed all instructions on http://github.com/resolve/refinerycms but the bundler doesn't work because there is not gemfile (I have copied the gemfile from github but it fails at rmagick gem) and have also tried the command line instructions but it fails at rake db:setup. I have tried installing all required gems myself but this makes no difference. Can anyone give me a quick step by step on how to get it running? I have now completely removed ruby so can start afresh. I have the installers from rubyinstaller.org and have tried with both 1.8.7 and 1.9. I have mysql 5.1 installed. Much appreciated!

• Screen capture of MDI app with OpenGL graphics using MFC

  In our MDI application - which is written in MFC - we have a function to save a screenshot of the MDI client area to file. We are currently doing a BitBlt from the screen into a bitmap, which is then saved. The problem is that some of the MDI child windows have their content rendered by OpenGL, and in the destination bitmap these areas show up as blank or garbled. I have considered some alternatives: - Extract the OpenGL content directly (using glReadPixels), and draw this to the relevant portions of the screen bitmap. - Simulate an ALT+PrtScr, since doing this manually seems to get the content just fine. This will trash the clipboard content, though. - Try working with the DWM. Appart from Vista and Win7, this also needs to work on Win2000 and XP, so this probably isn't the way to go. Any input will be appreciated!

That time problem was resolved himself (without any actions from my side, with Visual Studio restart). At the moment, I had the same problem on another PC (Vista x64, VS2008, Silverlight 3.0, RIA Services Toolkit): ThomasDomainContext class that inherits DomainContext was not visible from the page's codebehind file. Again, it was resolved after VS restart and after that I got another problem: Error 1 'VfmElita.Web.ClientBin.ThomasDomainContext' does not contain a definition for 'employee' and no extension method 'employee' accepting a first argument of type 'VfmElita.Web.ClientBin.ThomasDomainContext' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) D:\Project\Budda\VFMElita\VfmElitaSilverlightClient\MainPage.xaml.cs for the following lines of code (error is noticed for the 31st line): 30: var context = new ThomasDomainContext(); 31: grid1.ItemsSource = context.employee; 32: context.Load(context.GetEmployeeQuery()); Any help is welcome.   I'm looking for a cross-platform CD & DVD burning library. I'm not too particular about the language or framework a long as there are minimal dependencies and they are easily installable cross-platform, or already exist. A command-line application would also work.. Looking to target WinXP, Vista, Win7, OS X Leopard & Snow Leopard, & most linux distros. I know I can write an .iso cross platform, but I'm looking for a way to burn those .ISOs to disk on a variety of platforms without having to code seperately for each one. It's for burning MP3 disks and standard audio CDs... All suggestions appreciated.

• Internet Explorer changes brightness

  I have a very annoying problem with IE8 on Vista: My screen brightness changes when I view a page with IE. It slowly dimms brightness some 20% - enough to be noticeable. This seems to be dependent on the OVERALL brightness of the page viewed or of the amount of bright space on the page... sometimes it dimms down if the page is bright, sometimes the complete different, it dimms when lot of dark space is on the page. I know this sounds weird, I cannot describe it better. It takes about one,two seconds from on brightness level to the other. This ONLY occurs in IE - not in Word or any other application. Please help! This dimming is very stressfull for my eyes.

• Program seems to get stuck ?

  I have a Java program, I did some change and the strange thing is no matter what I do now, it will output the same result before my change, I looked into my system (Windows Vista), and clicked on "Generate a system health report", the result says : Symptom : A service is reported as having an unexpected error code Cause : One or more services has failed. The service did not stop gracefully, suggesting the service may have crashed or one of its components stopped in an unsupported way. Details : Service exited with code not equal to 0 or 1077 Resolution : Restart the service It doesn't say which service, and I defragmented my drives a few times, it still gave me the same report. I also checked my memory, it says no problem with ram. Everything else is ok, I re-started the windows a few times, got more free space on my C: drive, yet the Java program is still not responding to my new changes, unless I intentionally make a mistake, it gives me compile error, but if it can compile successfully, it still gives me the results before the change. What can I do to fix this ? Frank

As a developer using the "Microsoft Stack", how do you handle the trolls and bigots in the online world?   Hi, I need to edit a Flash movie that somebody else developed in Adobe Flash CS3 on a Mac. I'm using Adobe Flash CS4 on Windows (Vista). However, the font that shows up on my computer is much bigger than on the .SWF that he produced. He used a custom font, which I had to add to my system Fonts folder. Because Adobe Flash detected the right fonts on my computer, it didn't map them to substitute fonts. I verified that Flash is indeed using the same font files that he used. I believe the fonts are being rendered differently because I'm using Windows. How do I fix this?

• PHP won't parse MySQL statements

  I just installed Apache 2.2.15/PHP 5.3.2/MySQL 5.1.44 on Windows Vista. Apache is working fine, PHP is functional, and MySQL works on the CLI. However, when I try to access MySQL via PHP, I get an error (Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysql_connect()). extension=php_mysql.dll and extension=php_mbstring.dll are uncommented in the php.ini file, and PHP is in the system path. There is no libmysql.dll in either the top level PHP directory or the ext directory. There's a libmySQL.dll file in the MySQL bin directory (which is also in the system path); I tried renaming it, but that doesn't do anything Also, in case anyone wants to know, I originally installed PHP using the MSI installer, but it was missing some DLLs, so I installed from the zip file. I think I've exhausted all my options. Any help on this problem would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  I'm getting different behavior from a regular expression in JavaScript depending on whether or not I declare it using literal syntax. Using a extremely simple test HTML file: <html> <head> <script type="text/javascript"> var s = '3'; var regex1 = /\d/; var regex2 = new RegExp('\d'); alert(s.search(regex1)); // 0 (matches) alert(s.search(regex2)); // -1 (does not match) </script> </head> <body></body> </html> The regular expression declared with literal syntax (/\d/) works correctly, while the other (new RegExp('\d')) does not. Why on earth is this happening? I'm using Google Chrome 5.0.375.70 on Windows Vista Home Premium, if that's at all helpful.

• Is it Me or Are Rails and Django Difficult to Install on Windows?

  I tried getting these frameworks working on Windows Vista for a couple of days but to no avail. Every single time I thought I had them working I would get some random error involving the PostgreSQL or MySQL setup, or the paths were screwed up or some other command line error "not recognized as an internal or external command" (or something). Someone told me that these frameworks are a lot easier to get running on Ubuntu but I really don't want to make that switch as everything I have is on Windows. Are these common problems when trying to get running on Windows? I think I'll just stick with C# and .NET as everything seems to work pretty nicely together with none of this "install-twenty-different-components" stuff and see if they work together. Is Instant Django advisable to use?

• System context menu Icon not transparent like WinRAR

  I added a icon at the system context menu(the popped up menu when we right mouse click on any file/foler). But the icon is not transparent(in xp its not notice able, but in vista/win7 it is clearly visible) there is a white background beneath the icon. But WinRAR or TortoiseSVN icons don't have any white background, they are transparent. I tried the following C++ code: #define BITMAP_MAIN 201 //in resource.h BITMAP_MAIN BITMAP "main.bmp" // in .rc file // showing icon in menu...   Frequently I'm brainstormed with programming ideas that I would like to directly code. More or less like "Wow, that algorithm will rock! I need to write it now!". For this kind of "impulse" to write, I use http://www.jarte.com/ that is a cool portable text editor. If I'm near a cybecafe or a friend computer, I just plug the usb pen drive and start to write... So, I would like: 1) a portable minimalist IDE 2) with minimal OS requirement (ie.: I want run from XP, Vista, etc...) 3) any modern language (I can learn a new language if needed. I just want write/test the algoritm) 4) Syntax Highlight/intellisense is good, but not required 5) Free Is there something like this?

• Unable to get multiple connection to MySql on Windows 7

  I have installed MySql on windows 7 ... issue is i'm unable to get multiple connection to MySql . If I connect to MySql through command line and at the same time open an other MySql command line client it goes into wait state, as soon as I disconnect the first one later one gets connected. Because of above issues I'm unable to run tomcat in debug mode as it tries to get more than one connection to MySql in debug mode. Previously I was using same version of MySql i.e. 5.1 on vista and it was working fine.

• How to build boost::asio example?

  Hello, I'm trying to build an example of boost::asio http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_43_0/doc/html/boost_asio/example/echo/async_tcp_echo_server.cpp but without any luck. System: Windows Vista, Visual C++ 2008 Pro, Boost 1.43. I've added to the project, at VC, the include path and the additional lib path (see note #1), yet the linker gives me this error: 1>LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'libboost_system-vc90-mt-gd-1_43.lib' What do I do next? In the documentation (the "getting started" part) it says that some boost's components must be built separately. Ok. How do I do this and where do I find them? In the "getting started" page there's the section "6.1 Link From Within the Visual Studio IDE". It just tells me how to link, and not how to build it. Anyone can shed some light? Because I am definitely missing something here. Note #1: There's not "boost_1_43_0/lib" folder but a "libs". The doc needs a refresh.

• Too slow gwt develpment mode !

  I'm using eclipse galileo with latest GWT 2.0 version in development mode, but it runs really slow (i should wait about 1 minute to open one page, but after compilation, my application works very well when I run it using tomcat 5.5). My code is not too heavy & i guess there is an os-related or software inconsistency problem, because I'd this problem before, but when i reinstalled my windows vista sp2 (I formatted my windows drive & reinstalled it), my problem solved for just some days & then again it became to slow ! I didn't install any special software on my windows, so i really dont know why this problem occures ??? any suggestion ?

• Explorer right-click uploader for CMS?

  I'm looking for a "right-click upload" application like RightLoad - an application that can upload media files to a remote FTP server from the Windows Explorer's context menu. I want to customize the application to serve as a customized image uploading tool to a PHP-based CMS. The user would upload images and other media files to a defined FTP account (I'm also very open for other methods of transport, as long as they are supported by run-off-the-mill web hosting stacks) that they could then use in the CMS they log in to. For me to be able to do these customizations, the application would have to be Open Source - RightLoad is "only" Freeware. Alternatively, I'm open for closed-source and commercial suggestions as long as they allow "pre-packaged" server settings that can easily be deployed to the user. Does anybody know such a tool compatible with at least the most current versions of Windows (XP, Vista, 7)?
