  I would like to convert my Subversion repository to Mercurial. I have a pretty big web project divided into many different folders. In Subversion I was able to set per directory permissions for a repository. For example, I could say that a new developer could only read and write a subset of all the project's directories. Is it possible to have a similar setup in a single Mercurial repository?

• Excel VBA Application.OnTime. I think its a bad idea to use this... thoughts either way?

  I have a number of users I support that are asking for things to happen automatically ( well more automagically but that's another point!). One want events to happen every 120 secs ( see my other question ) and also another wants 1 thing to happen say at 5pm each business day. This has to be on the Excel sheet so therefore VBA as addins etc will be a no no, as it needs to be self contained. I have a big dislike of using Application.OnTime I think its dangerous and unreliable, what does everyone else think?

• Caching in mmap

  I am using mmap call to read from a very big file using simple pointer arithmetic in C++. The problem is that when I read small chunks of data (in the order of KBs) multiple times, each read take the same amount of time as the previous one. How can I know if the disk is being accessed to fulfill my request or whether the request is being fulfilled from main memory (page cache) in calls after the first one.

• Ideas for student parallel programming project

  I'm looking to do a parallel programming project in C (probably using pthreads or maybe OpenMP) for a class. It will done by a group of about four students, and should take about 4 weeks. I was thinking it would be interesting to attack some NP-complete problem with a more complex algorithm like a genetic algo with simulated annealing, but I'm not sure if it would be a big enough project. • Can i upload my apk to SD Card instead of internal storage?

I don't have any problems when I install it in external storage, but when I upload it to phone before installing, the APK goes to internal storage and my testing phone doesn't have enough space in internal storage and a lot of android phones don't have enough internal space for 70 MB... Can I upload my APK straight to the SD Card instead of internal storage first? upload mean "upload from my eclipse while runnig , or download from market, apk will go to internal storage but i want apk go to external and start install from external"

  I've read in multiple places, including highly recommended PHP books published several years ago, that PHP 6 was just over the horizon, and would fix several of the BIG outstanding issues with PHP (namely unicode support). However, its been several years even since I've read those books, and PHP 6 is still not considered kosher for production use.   So i'm making small program and it download ziped XML database file that is ~30 MB size (unziped). As I understand there is only way with such big files on iPhone, it's to use NSXMLParser. But that file is encoded with windows-1257 format and NSXMLParser does not eat files like that. What can I do? Is there a way to change file encoding on iphone or make NSXMLParser work with other then UTF8 encoded files?

As long as something fits RAM it's fine - once it's too big it gets ridiculously slow (in many different scenarios).
