• RTOS experience

  Hi, I have been working as an embedded software engineer on mostly 8 bit micro-controller firmware and desktop/mobile applications development for the past five years. My work on a WinCE project (in which I got introduced to .NET CF) was short lived. I did use core APIs for interrupt processing, peripheral communication, etc...but again, not exactly a pure RTOS environment. In order to get together more solid experience for growing more in the embedded field, I want to work more with RTOSes. Will buying an evaluation board with an RTOS and putting together a project at home be regarded as a good experience or will an online course be more useful? I am just not clear as to what will be regarded as good experience. Any suggestions or directions will greatly help me. I have a passion for the field but just a need a point in the right direction. • GRUB2 panic: "No such partition"

  I managed to install 10.04 on a system that already has 8.04 (separate partitions, of course). It also installed GRUB2 onto the MBR. After discovering that there is no menu.lst anymore, I edited /etc/grub.d/40_custom to point to where my other OS partitions are: menuentry "Ubuntu 8.04" { set root=(hd0,0) linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-28-generic initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-28-generic } menuentry "Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit" { set root=(hd0,2) chainloader (hd0,2)+1 } GRUB2 displays the menu with those entries but when I select any of them, it refuses to load them, saying "No such partition". I know the partitions are there, as 10.04's "Disk Utility" sees them without any problem. How do I get GRUB2 to recognize them?

• Setting coding priorities

  Hi, In the dev shops I've worked in, nobody has ever mentioned "coding priorities". I read this in a book or site somewhere, and sets the expectation of what priority should be first in the code. In places where this is not specified, what should the first priority be? It may sound simple to say "do what the business need requires", but that could be at the expense of performance/maintainability. Many people say maintainability first, regardless, some say fulfill the need regardless. I am a young developer, so I am probably missing the point somewhere. Of course, programming is engineering and tough because you can never have the perfect solution. Thanks

• How to completely remove wicd from 12.04?

  I had issues with WiFi so I removed Network Manager. I booted Windows OS (dual booting Windows 7 and 12.04) to download wicd 1.7.2.4. Extracted it and installed. However, wcid worked properly with Wired Connection but could not connect to WiFi. So, I re-installed Network Manager which works properly now, and wicd connects to WiFi too. As soon as I disconnect from Network Manager, wicd connects only to wired. At this point, I wanted to remove wicd but apt-get returns no wicd installed, can't see it in Synaptic or Software Center, but only in Applications list under Dash home. Of course wcid icon shows connections, and resulting connected, so my system shows both applets for wicd and network manager in the top panel. When running dpkg commands, wicd is not listed as installed package. Any suggestion how to remove wicd? Consider that I started with Ubuntu just few months ago so my knowledge base is limited.

  Last week, I discussed a new change in 5.4 where we have backported the RibbonBar from DotNetNuke Professional to the Community Edition. Well that is not the only big change that is occurring with this release. We are also backporting the Telerik Editor Provider! This is another huge win for the community. Over the course of the last 7 years we have primarily had 2 different HTML editors that we have shipped with DotNetNuke. The first text editor we used was FreeTextBox. • Too much to learn, so little time

  Okay, so I'm a java developer (or at least I think I am),and also a student at the same time I want to get a job when I graduate,I'll be graduating in a year or so (hopefully) (Note: my major has nothing to do with programming) Now, I'm between a rock and a hard place I also want to nail the foundations to become a good software developer. I want to be able to write programs that solve problems,not just glue code The software market in my country for java developers is just a few developers working with Java EE (struts,spring,hibernate....etc) I'm currently learning C++ with this book. I've also watched most of the 1st lecture of this course and I understood pretty much everything I watched To sum it up, I have three options Learn Java EE Learn C++ Learn Scheme Which is better for me at this point?

• Simple alternating text in Visual Basic 2008

  I have a simple completed program, but i would like to add one more feature to it but I'm not sure how. I have it set up to send a message automatically every 7 seconds when a text field is selected, repeating the message of course. What I would like for it to do is alternate between two separate messages, instead just repeating the one. I would like the new program to post at an interval of 12 seconds. Can you help me? • problems with studying algorithms

  hello everyone, I'm currently studying computer science at the Institute, and I have some problems with course which is named Algorithms, I've just begun to study it, but I'm already feeling, that I'm going to fail it, my problem is that while understanding different algorithms on graphs I need to keep in my mind a lot of info, and usually I can't do it, I forget some points of the exercise or can't proceed to final result, I'm very desperate about it cause I like programming very much. Did somebody feel the same while studying in the University? thanks in advance for any help P.S. I began to program only two years ago, may it be the problem?

• As an IT contractor, is it better to be a specialist or a jack-of-all-trades? [on hold]

  I've just entered the contracting market as a web developer and I've having a tough time figuring out how to plan for the future. Several developers I've worked with in the past have told me to become a specialist in one technology/area in order to secure the big contracts. However I've also heard from other sources that it's better to spread your expertise so that you're not limited in the types of work you can go for. Personally I've pretty much been involved in both back and front-end technologies during the course of my career, with slight variations in the weighting of each depending on the job. I don't really have a favourite - I enjoy it all. My question is mainly to the experienced contractors though: Do you feel specialising has helped your career or is it better to know a bit of everything? Thanks

• ALSA mixer applet?

  I have recently installed Narwhal. Everything seems to look good so far, but as usual sound via PulseAudio is deeply unsatisfactory; scratchy sound from Skype, choppy sound from command line apps, etc. So I've removed it, and sound now works fine. Unfortunately I now discover that the standard Gnome mixer applet has changed to being PulseAudio-only, and trying to run it just hangs waiting for a PulseAudio connection. Does anyone know of a replacement volume control applet that I could use which manipulates the ALSA mixer directly? I've found xfce4-volumed, which handles the hotkeys very nicely (once I disable the keyboard shortcuts in Gnome), but of course the XFCE4 mixer applet isn't compatible with Gnome so I can't use that; and there appears to be nothing else readily apparent...

• How to advance in my JavaScript skills? [closed]

  I am using javascript for about two years now, and I feel that I can do really basic stuff. I can make some basic algorithms and mostly use jQuery for interactive elements on webpages, and as I need to do more advanced things I get the feeling that my knowledge is lacking. In most cases I find a code, it takes me quite some time to understand it, but I don't understand why it is written as it is. I have no background in computer science, so I'm not sure weather I should go to the basics, or get some advanced javascript book/course. How can I make that jump from using JS for scripting to become a real programmer?

• Suggestions needed on an architecture for a multiple clients and customisable web application

  Our product is a web based course managemant system. We have 10+ clients and in future we may get more clients. (Asp.net,SQL Server) Currently if one of our customers need extra functionality or customised business logic, we will change the db schema and code to meet the needs. (we only have one branch code base and one database schema) To make the change wont affect each others route, we use a client flag, which defined in a web config file, thus those extra fields and biz logic only applied to a particular customer's system. if(ClientId = 'ABC') { //DO ABC Stuff } else { //Normal Route } One of our senior colleagues said, in this way, small company like us can save resources on supporting multiple resources. But what I feel is, this strategy makes our code and database even harder to maintain. Anyone there crossed similar situation? How do you handle that?

• Visual Studio 2010 Find and Replace With Regular Expressions

  Here is a quick notes about using regular expressions in the VS2010 Find Replace dialog.  1.  To create a backreference, use curly braces (“{“ and “}” ) instead of regular parentheses. 2.  To use the captured backreference, use \1\2 etc, where \1 is the first captured value, \2 is the second captured value, etc. Example: I want to find*: info.setFieldValue(param1, param2); and replace it with: SetFieldValue(info, param1, param2); To do this, I can use the following find/replace values: Find what: {[a-zA-Z0-9]+}.setFieldValue\({[a-zA-Z0-9., ]+}\); Replace with: SetFieldValue(\1, \2); Use Regular Expressions is checked, of course. *If you’re wondering why I’d want to do this – because I don’t have control over the setFieldValue function – its in a third party library that doesn’t behave in a very friendly manner. • Question about Partitioning

  I am looking to dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 13.10. I have been using windows for work and school for over a year, and have about 100 gig of stored files (backed up of course) and some paid programs. Because of this, I really want my partitioning experience to go well. Unfortunately, I am running into a bit of an anomoly When I load GPart, I see that my sda drive is unallocated http://i.imgur.com/Hi2XhIr.png Whereas my sdb appears to contain all of the windows files and partitions, and make up my C: drive http://i.imgur.com/aaCOXje.png Is this going to be an issue, as all literature on dual boot installation references sda? • Numerical stability in continuous physics simulation

  Pretty much all of the game development I have been involved with runs afoul of simulating a physical world in discrete time steps. This is of course very simple, but hardly elegant (not to mention mathematically inaccurate). It also has severe disadvantages when large values are involved (either very large speeds, or very large time intervals). I'm trying to make a continuous physics simulation, just for learning, which goes like this: time = get_time() while true do new_time = get_time() update_world(new_time - time) render() time = new_time end And update_world() is a continuous physical simulation. Meaning that for example, for an accelerated object, instead of doing object.x = object.x + object.vx * timestep object.vx = object.vx + object.ax * timestep -- timestep is fixed I'm doing something like object.x = object.x + object.vx * deltatime + object.ax * ((deltatime ^ 2) / 2) object.vx = object.vx + object.ax * deltatime However, I'm having a hard time with the numerical stability of my solutions, especially for very large time intervals (think of simulating a physical world for hundreds of thousands of virtual years). Depending on the framerate, I get wildly different solutions. How can I improve the numerical stability of my continuous physical simulations?

  Hi, company where I applied for a job requires a very detailed CV mainly of programming languages, frameworks, technology. My CV have 3 pages but for this company is not enough detailed. ;) What structure have your CV in programming languages, frameworks, technology, third-party libraries? Any sample of good structured CV. (as pdf file) Of course I had used the google but I found a dozen same old things. I would like have someting orignal and fresh. Any inspiration? I do not know what to write for example C #. C# OOP, delagate, event, generic, LINQ other WPF control, data template, converter, style, triggers..? Prims, Caliburn, MEF ? Also which skills from OS, IDE, util is suitably to have in CV. I would’t have a 10 pages CV or have bad and immense structure of CV. Sory for my english

  Yesterday, Twitter was hit with a "Cascading Bug" as described in this blog post: A “cascading bug” is a bug with an effect that isn’t confined to a particular software element, but rather its effect “cascades” into other elements as well. I've seen this kind of bug, on a smaller scale of course, on some projects I've worked on. They can be difficult to identify in dev/test environments, even within a test driven development environment. My questions are... What are some strategies you use, beyond the basic TDD and standard regression testing, to identify and prevent the potential trouble points that might only occur in the production environment? Does the presence of such problems indicate a breakdown in the software development process or simply a by-product of complex software systems?

• Is YQL still used?

  A few years ago, following the explosion of custom web APIs from various services around the world, Yahoo! launched the YQL service, which allows to query data from a variety of different providers with a unified Yahoo Query Language. Having worked with the APIs of Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Google Maps, YouTube and more, I very much enjoy the idea. However, I do not see it mentioned often, and of course this is one of those efforts that makes sense when enough people follow it and expose their API through this layer. Are there some statitics of usage? Or some declarations from Yahoo about the destiny of YQL? I would also be interested in hearing your experience if you have tried it directly.

• Is the copy/paste approach professionally viable when working with the Google Maps API?

  I find that I understand much of the Javascript concepts used in the Google Maps API code, but then again there is quite a bit that is way over my head in syntax. For example, the geocoder syntax seems to be of Ajax form, though I don't understand what is happening under the hood (especially with lines like results[0].geometry.location). I am able to modify the body of if (status == google.maps.GeocoderStatus.OK) for different purposes though. So, being that I am able to take various code from the Developer's Guide and rework it to an extent for my own purposes, all the while not fully understanding what Google Maps is actually doing, does this make me a copy-paste programmer? Is this a bad practice, or is this professionally viable? I am, of course, interested in learning as much as I can, but what if time-constraints outweigh the learning process?

• Self-documenting code vs Javadocs?

  Recently I've been working on refactoring parts of the code base I'm currently dealing with - not only to understand it better myself, but also to make it easier for others who are working on the code. I tend to lean on the side of thinking that self-documenting code is nice. I just think it's cleaner and if the code speaks for itself, well... That's great. On the other hand we have documentation such as javadocs. I like this as well, but there's a certain risk that comments here gets outdated (as well as comments in general of course). However, if they are up-to-date they can be extremely useful of say, understanding a complex algorithm. What are the best practices for this? Where do you draw the line between self-documenting code and javadocs?
