• What characteristic of a software determines its operational scope?

  How can I classify whether a software is a medium with the ability to grow into an enterprise level software or whether it is already there? And how should I use the information to choose the appropriate language/tool to create the software? At first I was asking whether Java or PHP is the best tool to design enterprise level software, however I've suddenly realized that I am unable to put the software I'm tasked with redesigning into the proper scope so I'm lost. Edit: I guess I'm looking for tell tale signs in software that may tip the favour towards enterprise level type software in the sense of functional and operational characteristics; functional: what it does (multi-functional), Architectural characteristics such as highly modular. operational: multi-sourced and multi-homed, databases, e.t.c. To be honest the reason I ask is because I'm skeptical about the use of PhP to design a piece of employee and partial accounting software. I'm more tipping towards the use of JSP and an hmvc framework such as JSF, wickets, e.t.c. where as the other guy wants to go the PhP way although I'm not experienced with PhP, as far as I know it's not an OO oriented language hence my skepticsm towards it.

  Java EE 6 developers will wake up this morning and be able to experience a new, major release of the Oracle GlassFish Server and the companion GlassFish Server 3.1, Open Source Edition.  This release extends Java EE 6 Reference Implementation New Application Development Capabilities, Centralized Administration and High Availability Features.  IDE tool support will include NetBeans and Eclipse  (update center link is here), as well as the next release of Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse will be updated to include the new GlassFish 3.1 Server Plug-in.   I often get asked following question? “How much data SQL Server can handle?” Every single time when I get this question – I ask back following question - “How much data your storage system can handle?” The reason I ask this question back is because in reality for enterprise systems the limitation of storage is no more an issue. The Matter of the fact most of the database is now a days limited by the size of the storage system. SQL Server is enterprise system and it is very mature product. Even though if you still want to know what is the actual limit here is the answer. SQL Server 2008R2, 2012 and 2014 have maximum capacity of 524 PB (Petabyte) in the Enterprise, BI and Standard edition. SQL Server Express has a limitation of 10 GB due to its nature. I guess, now when you look at my question it will make sense that it is all depending on the size of your storage system. • Which web framework or technologies would suit me?

  Hi, I had been working on desktop apps and server side(non web) for some time and now I am diving in to web first time. I plan to write a scalable enterprise level app. I have worked with Java, Javascript, Jquery etc. but I absolutely hate jsp. So is there any framework that focuses on developing enterprise level web apps without jsp. I liked Wicket's approach, but I think there is a little lack of support of dynamic html in it and jquery(yes i looked at wiquery). Also I feel making wicket apps scalable would take some sweat. Can Spring MVC, Struts2 etc. help me make with this with just using say Java, JavaScript, and JQuery. Or are there any other options for me like Wicket. Please do forgive if anything above looks insane, I am still working on my understanding with enterprise web apps. NOTE: If you think that I should take a different direction or approach, please do suggest!

• SOA Starting Point: Methods for Service Identification and Definition

  As more and more companies start to incorporate a Service Oriented Architectural design approach into their existing enterprise systems, it creates the need for a standardized integration technology. One common technology used by companies is an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB). An ESB, as defined by Progress Software, connects and mediates all communications and interactions between services. In essence an ESB is a form of middleware that allows services to communicate with one another regardless of framework, environment, or location. With the emergence of ESB, a new emphasis is now being placed on approaches that can be used to determine what Web services should be built. In addition, what order should these services be built? In May 2011, SOA Magazine published an article that identified 10 common methods for identifying and defining services. SOA’s Ten Common Methods for Service Identification and Definition: Business Process Decomposition Business Functions Business Entity Objects Ownership and Responsibility Goal-Driven Component-Based Existing Supply (Bottom-Up) Front-Office Application Usage Analysis Infrastructure Non-Functional Requirements  Each of these methods provides various pros and cons in regards to their use within the design process. I personally feel that during a design process, multiple methodologies should be used in order to accurately define a design for a system or enterprise system. Personally, I like to create a custom cocktail derived from combining these methodologies in order to ensure that my design fits with the project’s and business’s needs while still following development standards and guidelines. • Is there really anything to gain with complex design? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: What is enterprise software, exactly? 8 answers I've been working for a consulting firm for some time, with clients of various sizes, and I've seen web applications ranging in complexity from really simple: MVC Service Layer EF DB To really complex: MVC UoW DI / IoC Repository Service UI Tests Unit Tests Integration Tests But on both ends of the spectrum, the quality requirements are about the same. In simple projects, new devs / consultants can hop on, make changes, and contribute immediately, without having to wade through 6 layers of abstraction to understand what's going on, or risking misunderstanding some complex abstraction and costing down the line. In all cases, there was never a need to actually make code swappable or reusable - and the tests were never actually maintained past the first iteration because requirements changed, it was too time-consuming, deadlines, business pressure, etc etc. So if - in the end - testing and interfaces aren't used rapid development (read: cost-savings) is a priority the project's requirements will be changing a lot while in development ...would it be wrong to recommend a super-simple architecture, even to solve a complex problem, for an enterprise client? Is it complexity that defines enterprise solutions, or is it the reliability, # concurrent users, ease-of-maintenance, or all of the above? I know this is a very vague question, and any answer wouldn't apply to all cases, but I'm interested in hearing from devs / consultants that have been in the business for a while and that have worked with these varying degrees of complexity, to hear if the cool-but-expensive abstractions are worth the overall cost, at least while the project is in development.

  I have seen many of what is called 'private servers' mmorpg (multiplayer online games), which uses stolen sources,modified executable, clients and server. People launch up their own server using VPS or dedicated server and distribute online service among players disclaiming it has educational purposes only, saying they are studying the game engine and selling items for players disclaming it as 'donations', so it seems like they are getting donations to keep studying. We all know it's a comercial method. All of it is copyrighted material from enterprise ABCD. (ABCD = Fictional name, I'm not mentioning names). At their website they include the following: "Private Server XXXX" does not allow/support any conection to any company/organization associated with the game "XXXX". If you are anyway affiliated with enterprise "XXXXXXX", or any other company/organization associated with the game "XXXX" you may not view/open/read/execute/play/download any part of "Private Server XXXX" nor view "Private Server XXXX" website, if any company/organization requests you to investigate our website/server, you may not view "Private SERVER XXXX" or execute any action mentioned above. Any person caught disobeting this disclaimer will be punish to the fulleste extent of law. Can this guys get arrested? Do they disclaimer works? If I'm owner of enterprise X and I know people stole my source and are using them but they have such disclaimer I'm not allowed to investigate them?
