• Has anyone tried the "objectify" library for Google App Engine?

  I was using JDO for my google app engine project but got fed up with the additional 5 seconds it adds to my cold start time. I was planning on just writing stuff directly to the database with the low level datastore api, but then I came accross the objectify project ( http://code.google.com/p/objectify-appengine/ ). Apparently its a super light wrapper above the low level api. Does anyone have experiences with this library that they could share?

• Which is the "best" data access framework/approach for C# and .NET?

  (EDIT: I made it a community wiki as it is more suited to a collaborative format.) There are a plethora of ways to access SQL Server and other databases from .NET. All have their pros and cons and it will never be a simple question of which is "best" - the answer will always be "it depends". However, I am looking for a comparison at a high level of the different approaches and frameworks in the context of different levels of systems. For example, I would imagine that for a quick-and-dirty Web 2.0 application the answer would be very different from an in-house Enterprise-level CRUD application. I am aware that there are numerous questions on Stack Overflow dealing with subsets of this question, but I think it would be useful to try to build a summary comparison. I will endeavour to update the question with corrections and clarifications as we go. So far, this is my understanding at a high level - but I am sure it is wrong... I am primarily focusing on the Microsoft approaches to keep this focused. ADO.NET Entity Framework Database agnostic Good because it allows swapping backends in and out Bad because it can hit performance and database vendors are not too happy about it Seems to be MS's preferred route for the future Complicated to learn (though, see 267357) It is accessed through LINQ to Entities so provides ORM, thus allowing abstraction in your code LINQ to SQL Uncertain future (see Is LINQ to SQL truly dead?) Easy to learn (?) Only works with MS SQL Server See also Pros and cons of LINQ "Standard" ADO.NET No ORM No abstraction so you are back to "roll your own" and play with dynamically generated SQL Direct access, allows potentially better performance This ties in to the age-old debate of whether to focus on objects or relational data, to which the answer of course is "it depends on where the bulk of the work is" and since that is an unanswerable question hopefully we don't have to go in to that too much. IMHO, if your application is primarily manipulating large amounts of data, it does not make sense to abstract it too much into objects in the front-end code, you are better off using stored procedures and dynamic SQL to do as much of the work as possible on the back-end. Whereas, if you primarily have user interaction which causes database interaction at the level of tens or hundreds of rows then ORM makes complete sense. So, I guess my argument for good old-fashioned ADO.NET would be in the case where you manipulate and modify large datasets, in which case you will benefit from the direct access to the backend. Another case, of course, is where you have to access a legacy database that is already guarded by stored procedures. ASP.NET Data Source Controls Are these something altogether different or just a layer over standard ADO.NET? - Would you really use these if you had a DAL or if you implemented LINQ or Entities? • SVN repository browser issue

  Hi, I use TortoiseSVN on WindowsXP and ran into an issue inside repository browser today. Basically, I can browser/checkout fine at application level "https://domain/svn/app1". However, When I try to browse at the root level of the repository "https://domain/svn/", the following error msg displays: OPTIONS of 'https://domain/svn': 200 OK I try to access https://domain/svn in a web browser, I can see all the applications there. • Business Objects ver 3 Alternate Row/Column Colors not active

  I am converting reports from version 2 to version 3. When I select the vertical table in the report, the propeties box appears but any changes I make is not reflected in the table. If I change any attributes at the column or cell level however, the changes are taken. The problem is that some attributes like alternate row coloring are not available at the column level.

• Map localhost to IP address on Windows XP & Internet Explorer 7+?

  I'm trying to map 'localhost' to an IP address elsewhere on the network, say '10.0.1.1' for example. I've tried editing my hosts file, changing the entry from: 127.0.0.1 localhost to 10.0.1.1 localhost with no luck. The closest I've gotten is using DNS spoofing via Charles. Adding a DNS spoof entry mapping the host name 'localhost' to '10.0.1.1' works fine in Firefox, but fails in Internet Explorer, basically showing IE's 404 page. I'm wondering if there's some specific setting or way I can get DNS spoofing to work in IE? The main issue I'm trying to resolve is that our development environment points to 'localhost' and rather than setting the dev env up in a legacy Windows laptop to try and debug, point to a server that has it all setup and I can make the changes remotely.

• Windows 7 and ocx installation

  I am having one application which runs on XP very well. What it does is it downloads some files from server and register one ocx object. In XP after installing I am able to see the entry in the RegEdit with name of that ocx component. But same thing I tried on the Windows 7 and its not registering that ocx component. I having same access rights as XP on windows 7. I am unable to find any entry in RegEdit. I tried installing it manually by Running Command Prompt As Administrator then it installs successfully.. How can I do it automaticallly as it works in XP? Thanks for the help.

• Getting the constructor of an Interface Type through reflection?

  I have written a generic type: IDirectorySource<T> where T : IDirectoryEntry, which I'm using to manage Active Directory entries through my interfaces objects: IGroup, IOrganizationalUnit, IUser. No matter how hard I have tried, I can't figure out how to get the constructor out of my interface through my implementing class. So for example, the top-level page would have teaser thumbnails very similar to the front page view but of course filtered for that topic (like for instance automobiles, and motorcycles would have its own page, etc...). • trouble setting node['chef-client']['interval']

  I've searched many places and haven't get found the answer to this, I suspect I'm missing something either fundamental or basic (maybe both) I'm using the chef-client::windows_service recipe and trying to set the interval and can't seem to sort it out. I've tried at the role level with: { "defaults": { "chef_client": { "interval":15 } }, "overrides":{ } } and at the node level with: { "chef_client": { "interval":25 }, "tags":[] } but the interval on the node is still 1800 (default)

• Local dns for testing websites using mobile devices

  Hi. I have no idea where to start from so sorry in advance if this topic has already been discussed. I usually develop web sites using my laptop as a development server, and recently I needed to test a web site using various mobile devices that can connect via wifi. Having no real AP, I set up a ad-hoc network using my laptop's wireless card and the devices can correctly browse the Internet and access the laptop's web server. The setup is as follows: subnet: 192.168.1.0/24 gateway to the Internet (wired adsl router/modem): 192.168.1.1 laptop: 192.168.1.64 (eth0, wired if connected to the gateway) and 192.168.1.32 (eth1, wifi if somewhat bridged to eth0) mobile devices (same for all, I only use one of them at any time for simplicity): 192.168.1.11 with default gw 192.168.1.1 Now, if I open either 192.168.1.32 or 192.168.1.64 from the mobile devices, I correctly get the default host of my Apache configuration. However I usually work with virtual hosts for many practical reasons, one of which being Drupal's peculiar implementation of multi-sites. For those who don't know how this works, Drupal takes the request's hostname and searches into its sites/ subdirectories for an appropriate configuration file. So, for example, suppose I request www.example.com, then Drupal would search for a config file in the following directories: sites/www.example.com/ sites/example.com/ sites/com/ sites/default/ So I decided to adopt the following style of virtual hosts: if the website I'm working on will be accessible using www.example.com I set up a sites/www.example.com/ directory and create a virtual host for local.www.example.com so Drupal have no trouble finding it. I've been told this is suboptimal from a dns point of view since I'd have to create an authoritative entry for example.com and turn Bind on only when I'm supposed to access the local copy, which is weird. However, if this is the only path I can follow, I still have some problems with Bind's configuration, as I couldn't find any guide that tells me in a clear, noob-friendly way, how to set up such an entry. On the other hand, I was wondering if I could set up an authoritative entry for local, so I could access www.example.com.local and tell in some way (which I don't even know if this is possible) Apache to put www.example.com instead of www.example.com.local in the relevant environment variable. Anyway, I have a last problem, sort of: when I launch Bind in debug mode with high verbosity, and make 192.168.1.32 as the primary dns for the devices, the output doesn't say anything about requests being made from the devices to Bind, so I'm not even sure it comes into play. As you can see, I'm a complete noob at these matters, but I'm eager to learn, so any help/pointer will be appreciated.

  More BIND DNS questions. OK, my changes the the zone files are no propagating out. Now I'm having a problem with the domain key entries I'm trying to create. I'm starting by trying to set the domain key policy. To do so I added the following entry to my zone file (actual domain XXX'd out). Based on everything I've read this is properly formatted and should work. When I try to verify the DNS entry for our domain it doesn't how up. _domainkey.XXXX.com TXT "t=y; o=~;" Is there something I'm missing? Nate
