• Alfa AWUS036H USB wireless adapter not recognized

  The Alfa AWUS036H USB wireless adapter will not be recognized by my netbook (Ubuntu 14.04, Asus X201E). As I understand it, the drivers should already be built in to this version of Linux, but I tried a make/make install of the latest Realtek drivers (as mentioned on How do I install drivers for the Alfa AWUS036H USB wireless adapter?) and it didn't work. I then followed the advice of this thread (ALFA AWUS036NH driver) and did a make/make install of the most up-to-date backport of the drivers, but that didn't work. At this point I tried a series of commands from this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2187780) in an attempt to identify the problem, but at no point could I get the laptop to ever recognize the USB adapter. I have also troubleshot the USB cable itself, tried both the USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports on the laptop, have never received an error message regarding a need to update the firmware, and have seemingly successfully installed all manner of variation of Realtek drivers which were supposed to make the adapter work. (I also tried to delete/clean up after each install, in the hope I wasn't making things worse.) Not sure what I should do next. Please let me know if I need to post any more information. • Proper response for a REST insert - full new record, or just the record id value?

  I'm building a REST API which allows inserts (POST, not idempotent) and updates (PUT, idempotent) requests to add/update database to our application. I'm wondering if there are any standards or best practices regarding what data we send back to the client in the response for a POST (insert) operation. We need to send back at least a record ID value (e.g. your new record is record #1234). Should we respond with the full object? (e.g. essentially the same response they'd get back from a "GET /object_type/1234" request) Should we respond with only the new ID value? (e.g. "{ id: 1234 }", which means that if they want to fetch the whole record they need to do an additional HTTP GET request to grab the full record) A redirect header pointing them to the URL for the full object? Something else entirely?

• Provide an OnChange event for an internal property which is controlled externally?

  For fun and by request I am updating this ImageGrid component, a kind of listbox for images that has a FileNames property of type TStrings. For ease of writing, I have been misusing its FileNames.Objects property for bitmap storage. But since the TStrings type suggests that users of the component could or would want to use the Objects property for custom data, e.g. like TListBox.Items, I am rewriting the component to store the bitmaps elsewhere and leave FileNames.Objects untouched for unknown future usage. Now I am wondering whether to provide an OnChange event. And if so, whether to fire it when one or more FileNames.Objects changes. Trying to answer it myself, I dove in Delphi's own VCL and stumbled on: TMemo: has an OnChange event, but ignores Lines.Objects TListBox: has no OnChange event, but is capable of storing Items.Objects TStringGrid: has no OnChange event, but is capable of storing Objects, Rows.Objects, Cols.Objects So now I am somewhat puzzeled, because I cannot imagine Borland's developers didn't add events for several Objects properties out of ease. Sure, when a user changes a FileNames.Object in my component, he knows he does and could implement appropriate interaction himself. But wouldn't it be convenient when the component does automatically? What would you expect from this component in this regard?

• Distributed Server Monitoring Solution

  I belong to an independent IT firm that manages and maintains about 50 business clients networks, ranging from small 5 system networks to 200+ systems. Because we are unable to directly monitor each server at these locations (distributed over a very large area) on a regular basis I am looking for a method to monitor and alert us to any problems that may arise so that we can respond quickly with, hopefully, preventative measures. I'm not sure what solutions are available for this type of situation, but something that utilizes a central server at our business with all client servers sending alerts or logs to it for daily monitoring might work best. All these servers are running a Windows Server OS. In your opinion, what would be the best course of action to accomplish this?

  I have a server running Windows Server 2008. I'm using Windows Server Auditing to check when and by which user a folder is modified to determine who is modifying it as the modifications are causing problems. I can see the log of the audit when a change is made in the System log. How do I create a Custom View that will return all events from System log where a certain text (which is the folder name) is present? The create custom view doesn't seem to have that option. I'm not sure whether it's possible via custom xml query or whether I'll need to export the system log to csv and search in Excel. John

• How can I make smoother upwards/downwards controls in pygame?

  This is a loop I use to interpret key events in a python game. # Event Loop for event in pygame.event.get(): if event.type == QUIT: pygame.quit() sys.exit() if event.type == pygame.KEYDOWN: if event.key == pygame.K_a: my_speed = -10; if event.key == pygame.K_d: my_speed = 10; if event.type == pygame.KEYUP: if event.key == pygame.K_a: my_speed = 0; if event.key == pygame.K_d: my_speed = 0; The 'A' key represents up, while the 'D' key represents down. I use this loop within a larger drawing loop, that moves the sprite using this: Paddle1.rect.y += my_speed; I'm just making a simple pong game (as my first real code/non-gamemaker game) but there's a problem between moving upwards <= downwards. Essentially, if I hold a button upwards (or downwards), and then press downwards (or upwards), now holding both buttons, the direction will change, which is a good thing. But if I then release the upward button, then the sprite will stop. It won't continue in the direction of my second input. This kind of key pressing is actually common with WASD users, when changing directions quickly. Few people remember to let go of the first button before pressing the second. But my program doesn't accommodate the habit. I think I understand the reason, which is that when I let go of my first key, the KEYUP event still triggers, setting the speed to 0. I need to make sure that if a key is released, it only sets the speed to 0 if another key isn't being pressed. But the interpreter will only go through one event at a time, I think, so I can't check if a key has been pressed if it's only interpreting the commands for a released key. This is my dilemma. I want set the key controls so that a player doesn't have to press one button at a time to move upwards <= downwards, making it smoother. How can I do that?

  I have a windows 2k8 machine that generated almost 40,000 WinEventLog:System events in the period of about 20 minutes. The breakdown of these events by eventcode was approximately: 4373 46% 4371 46% 4383 7% 4372 1% Microsoft-Windows-Servicing seemed to go crazy for a short time.... looking at updates, changing the state of updates etc. What could have caused this? UPDATE: Many of the events seem to come in pairs of: Windows Servicing started a process of changing package KBfoobar state from Installed(Installed) to Installed(Installed) and Windows Servicing successfully set package KBfoobar state to Installed(Intstalled)

• How to control/check CheckPoint rules changes (and another System events)

  I need to check/control all system events on many CheckPoint FW1 - don't misunderstand - not rules triggering, but events such admins log on, rules changes and etc. I found out that I can make an log export using 2 methods: Grab logs Use special script that redirect Checkpoint log entries to syslog, FW1-Loggrabber But it's not clear for me does such logs also contain information that i need (admins log on, rules changes)? And If yes is it possible to filter events? I also suppose, that if system bases on *nix platform it must be a ploy - use based functions of the system to do what i want. Unfortunately i don't know where to "dig". May be you know? Updated: New info "FW-1 can pipe its logs to syslog via Unix's logger command, and there are third party log-reading utilities" So, the main question is how do my task in the best way? • Event bubbling with img tags?

  I did some googling and figured I'm probably experiencing so called "event bubbling" that I've never heard of but are not surprised by it's existance. I want it to fire only once and I'm wondering how to fix this. Basically, I have this small code snippet: $('.bggallery_images').click(function () { alert('test'); }); This is supposed to fire once from a php snippet that basically adds an image of each image from a specific folder. It then outputs an echo string where each image has the class of "bggallery_images". • rich:fileupload inside rich:modalpanel doesnt send uploadcomplete event

  I'm trying to use the rich:fileupload from inside a rich:modalpanel component. The problem is that, when inside modalpanel, fileupload doesn't doesnt start the fileuploadeventlistener method. The same fileupload component works fine outside of modalpanel. (Although it doesn't rerender the components I ask it to, but that's another topic.) I could find this issue and similar ones on search for "fileupload modalpanel" but no answers. • Flash AS3: (VideoEvent.COMPLETE, completePlay) - listener is triggered before video is completed

  Hello, I have a flash video using the standard FLV Playback component that comes with Flash. I'm using ActionScript 3 to modify the appearance and set up an event listener. I've set it up to go to a new URL using "externalInterface" when the video completes play. The URL is set in a variable using SWFObject. On only a few instances (3 people out of 50 - tested using Amazon Turk), people reported being taken directly to the new url, before the video even started playing. It's difficult to repeat the issue, but it did happen to me once. It doesn't have anything to do with cache, since it has been reported on people going to the url for the first time. • problem with radgrid in pageindexchange event

  Hi, I Have radgrid in my page. When i turn off view state and in pageindexchanged event when click next page i am getting nothing. Simply a blank page. But when i turn on view state I am getting data in next pages. Is there any way to get the data. I cant turn on the view state due to performance issue.   I've seen this question and this article on how to debug a native Java crash. The article is with respect to Windows. What are the equivalent debugging aids on Linux? Note: All I have is this crash log from a user in the field. I do not have access to the machine on which the crash occurred. Update: I am pretty sure the crash is due to JNI code we have. I never meant to imply that it was the JVM itself that was faulty. • WPF Style Override breaks Validation Error event propagation

  I have a custom control that overrides Window: public class Window : System.Windows.Window { static Window() { DefaultStyleKeyProperty.OverrideMetadata(typeof(Window), new System.Windows.FrameworkPropertyMetadata(typeof(Window))); } ... } It also has a style: <Style TargetType="{x:Type Controls:Window}" BasedOn="{StaticResource {x:Type Window}}"> <Setter Property="WindowStyle" Value="None" /> <Setter Property="Padding" Value="5" /> <Setter Property="Template"> <Setter.Value> <ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type Controls:Window}"> ... Unfortunately, this breaks the propagation of the Validation.ErrorEvent for my window's contents. That is, my window can receive the event just fine, but I don't know what to do with it to mimic how a standard Window (or whoever) deals with it. If the validating controls are placed in a standard window, they work. They also work if I just take out the OverrideMetadata call (leaving them inside my custom window). Why is this happening, and how can I get the stock functionality for handling these validation error events working again? Thanks!

  Hi everyone, I have a strange jquery problem with multiple event handlers. What I'm trying to achieve is this: User selects some text on the page If the selection is not empty - show a context menu If user clicks somewhere else - the context menu should disappear I'm having troubles with the above i.e. sometimes the context menu appears correctly, sometimes it appears and disappears straight after user makes a selection. Please help. See the relevant parts of my code below.
