  • VirtualBox host: Ubuntu vs. Windows XP

    In order to lengthen the lifespan of my machine I am replacing the weakest link, the hard drive and installing a new OS. I had planned on using xp pro as my virtualbox host and ubuntu as guest. After messing with ubuntu desktop and server I am really impressed and am thinking of reversing the virtualbox setup; ubuntu host xp guest. I would use XP for Adobe Fireworks, Netflix, and iTunes (maybe) that's pretty much it. Any reason not to do ubuntu host with xp guest? I know the xp vbox will run slower as a guest but really how much slower? It's a desktop. 4gb ram, 500gb disk, Pent D 3.2 ghz

  • International multi-OS keyboard layout for both coding and surfing?

    So yes, the problem has been raised in parts multiple times already. Still I'm looking for a keyboard layout that has the following features: Easy on fingers (Dvorak-like layouts welcome) Easy for coding Includes german characters (typing ä with AltGr-p is not ok). Works well with web-browsing (Ctrl-t and Ctrl-w on one hand, left one very much preferred, since that's where my ex-CapsLock, now Ctrl lies) Works well with default Emacs bindings Works on both Windows and Linux (at least easily installable) I've looked at Dvorak and Neo, they both have a "shortcut problem", i.e. web-browsing and most frequent Emacs combinations use both parts of the keyboard. Using right Ctrl is usually not an option, since it'll give me RSI much faster than keeping QWERTY/Z. Funnily enough, mirroring the default Neo layout would probably be enough for me. So, any ideas?

  • USB external drive is not recognized by any OS, how to troubleshoot in Ubuntu?

    First of all I would like to inform you that I saw a question similar to mine but the error was different, so here's my problem... I have an external HD samsung s2 model of 500GB and a day to day just stopped working, tried in other systems (windows and mac) however are not recognized. In the windows device manager when I insert the usb it states that the device in question are not working properly.     One question that comes up frequently is whether you can mix Solaris 10 and Solaris 11 in different logical domains under Oracle VM Server for SPARC. The answer is yes depending only on the system software requirements for the underlying hardware platform. Different versions of Solaris 10 and 11 can exist side-by-side on the same server and can act as control, service, I/O or guest domains subject only to the minimum software levels documented in the System Requirements section of the Oracle VM Server for SPARC Release Notes. Here's an example just taken from a running system. First, here's the control domain, which is running Solaris 10. Mixing different guest OS levels on the same server is one of the traditional reasons for using virtual machines in the first place since virtual machines were invented some 40 years ago, used to run production and test systems in parallel while upgrading OS levels. This can easily be done with Oracle VM Server for SPARC (Logical Domains).

  • A Firefox "master password" feature that's friendly to guest users?

    I use the "master password" feature of Firefox and like it for a number of reasons. It does have it's drawbacks, though: anytime I hand my laptop over to my girlfriend so she can check her email on it, she's continually confronted with the prompt to enter my master password. I have since disabled the feature and am back to square one. Is there an addon or tweak that will help?

  • Mac OS needs Windows Live Writer &ndash; badly!

    I recently bought a new  Macbook Pro (the 13” one) to dive into a new world of programming challenges as well as to get a more powerful netbook than my Packard Bell Dot which I’ve been using since last year. I’ve had immense pleasure using the netbook format and their small size in meetings (taking notes with XMind), surfing “anywhere”, and, of course blogging with windows live writer. So far the Mac is holding up, it’s sleek, responsive, and I’ve even begun looking at coding in Objective C with it, but in one arena, it is severely lacking: Blogging software. There is nothing that even comes close to Live Writer for getting your blog posts out. The few blogger applications that do exist on mac both look and feel medieval in comparison, AND some even cost money! It looks like some mac users actually install a virtual machine on their mac to run Windows XP just so they can use WLW. I’m not that extreme; instead, I’m hoping that the WLW team will write it’s awesome application as a Silverlight 4 app. That way, it would run on Mac and Windows (as a desktop app). I wonder if it will ever happen though…   PS: The image is of me, took it with the built-in camera on the mac and emailed it to the windows PC that I am writing on :)

  • iPhone Lag Terrible - SLOW - What's going on with the iPhone OS?

    I've had my iPhone 3G for about a year now, and it seems like at least once a month, it gets bogged down and gets slower and slower - horrible lag when typing, going back to the home screen or opening an app can take 20 seconds. Has anyone else run into this and found "the" solution. What you always read on other boards is to reboot the handset (hold down home and the power button), but that doesn't improve anything for me. I've reinstalled the OS like 5 times now, and I'm getting pretty sick of doing it so often. And I don't buy that it's a hardware issue really, since it works fine for weeks after a fresh install. Anyone have a solution or an idea of what specific actions cause this kind of evident data corruption (OS corruption?) and slowness? Note - I'm looking for specific things here. That is, has anyone done the research to see exactly what on the phone operating system is getting messed up that causes this lag (which is discussed all over the internet, with no working solutions). I don't own a mac, so I can't delve into the guts of the iPhone very well to see what's up with it... Some additional info: Reboots (hold down power/home) and "Sleeps" (slide off) do nothing. Only fresh re-installs help I only have about 15 apps installed - sometimes you see the answer to uninstall apps if you have too many, I'd hope that 15 isn't too many, and even when I've had none installed, it still gets hung up after a period of time. This phone is not jailbroken, and it is running the 3.0.1 release.

  • How do I access shared folders on Ubuntu server from Mac OS?

    I have an old dell desktop running ubuntu 11.04, I also have samba installed on it. I'm trying to access the shared folders on the Ubuntu machine from my Mac, so I go into 'Finder', click on 'Go' and 'Connect to Server'. I type in the ip address of the ubuntu machine smb://xxx.xxx.x.xx and click connect, I can then see the list of shared folders from the ubuntu machine so I know its making a connection. But when I access the 'Music' folder I get an error message stating: There was an error connecting to the server "xxx.xxx.x.xx". Check the server name or IP address, and try again. Any thoughts anyone ? EDIT I have a external hard drive attached to the server, and the folders I'm trying to access are located on that external hard drive. The location of the folder is /media/HD-CELU2/test, so I think the path from Finder should be smb://xxx.xxx.x.xx/media/HD-CELU2/test, but having tested this, I'm still not getting in. P.S. I'm using Samba as I have a Windows machine on my home network as well.

  • Upgrade to Ubuntu 13.10 in a VirtualBox: Gnome desktop not working

    I had Ubuntu 13.04 running in a VirtualBox (the host is WinXP). I've upgraded it to 13.10 but I've some issues: Gnome desktop is not working correctly (I can log in but the main menu bar remains empty - I can only log out with CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE) I cannot build and install the VirtualBox Guest Addons: When trying to build it, it says: me@virtuntu:/etc/init.d$ sudo ./vboxadd setup Removing existing VirtualBox DKMS kernel modules ...done. Removing existing VirtualBox non-DKMS kernel modules ...done. Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions kernel modules The headers for the current running kernel were not found. If the following module compilation fails then this could be the reason. Building the main Guest Additions module ...done. Building the shared folder support module ...fail! (Look at /var/log/vboxadd-install.log to find out what went wrong) Doing non-kernel setup of the Guest Additions ...done.   • Which programming language to develop software for USC that also runs on other OS?? (WINDOWS/OSX)

    I have skills in JAVA and C#: First i had a closer look to JAVA (Eclipse with Windowbuilder-Plugin) - Swing: But there is no natvie GUI-Support for GTK3 (e.g., HUD seems not to work) Then i was at JAVA - SWT: It is to heavy. I want do code a small app that improves the Ubuntu desktop. I don't want to ship a program with eclipse included. After that i found C# Mono (Monodevelop): GTK-shparp is only for GTK2 available. A GTK3-port will come soon but is it possible to convert the program from GTK2 to GTK3 without extra adaptations? The next bad thing is, that MONO is now dropped from Ubuntu LTS 12.04. So i have no chance that my app would be a default-app in an Ubuntu-Image. (This is also a factor for me to choose a programming language). I know there are other techs but i want to use as programing language JAVA or C#.

  • OVM Server for SPARC Enhancements

    Oracle VM Servers for SPARC saw a few improvements in Ops Center 12.2. In addition to brownfield support, we've made a number of enhancements to let you add OVM Servers for SPARC to a Server Pool and enable migration of their guests. -When you discover an OVMSS Control Domain and manage it with an Ops Center Agent, its guests are automatically discovered as well. The guest metadata is initially put in the local metadata library in the /guests directory, but you can move it from one library to another to enable migration.-Once you've discovered an OVMSS control domain, you can add it to a server pool, even if it's already configured and running logical domains. Even if live migration between OVMSS systems isn't possible due to CPU incompatibilities, you can still put them in a server pool together and enable guest recovery by configuring the CPU architecture of the guest domain as generic. -You can mark a guest's storage as shared to indicate that it's available to other managed OVM Server systems with the same back-end name. This lets you use storage not fully managed in an Ops Center library as part of guest migration. Put together, these enhancements make it much easier to manage and maintain OVMSS guests.

  • Why do fonts sometimes look "fat" on Mac OS X?

    Sometimes when resuming from suspend, the fonts in Mac OS X look "fatter" than normal. Unfortunately right now I can't get my Macbook Pro to exhibit the "normal" behavior for comparison, it has been abnormal yesterday and today. If I can get screenshots of what I think is 'normal', I'll add them. "Fixing" this has been random. I use an external monitor, and sometimes unplugging it and plugging back in, or even turning it off and back on has worked. Sometimes with the display attached (or not) detecting displays works. Sometimes logging out or rebooting entirely is what it takes. Displays used: Macbook Pro 15" built-in display Dell 27" LCD (2009 model) Software where I see this happen, at least most noticably: Firefox (screenshots below) iTerm Things MacIrssi (screenshots below) I am using Mac OS X 10.5.8.   • Install a KVM guest with LVM partitioning on an LVM partitioned host using virt-install fails, volume group already exists

    our setup consists of a ubuntu 10.04 kvm host server with LVM, on top of which we install the ubuntu 10.04 virtual machines via virt-install and preseed. Each VM has a dedicated logical volume which we pass to virt-install via the "--disk path=/dev/sysvg/vm-name" parameter. The virtual machines themselves are using LVM as well. Virt-install seems to have a few issues with this setup. Say we want to install two virtual machines in parallel. The first vm installs correctly while the second halts during the partitioning, complaining with this error: "volume group name already in use". I tried removing the logical volumes, recreated them, rebooted the kvm host to clear any leftovers but the issue perists. The preseed is telling the vms to create a volume group named "sysvg", which is the same name used by the volume group of the kvm host. Considering this I did another test: I got rid of the preseed part taking care of the partitioning/lvm creation and started the creation of two vms in parallel. If, when prompted, I instruct the vms' installer to do a guided partitioning of the disk with LVM, it will still fail giving this different error on both the vms: Physical Volume /dev/sda5 is already in volume group sysvg. As I wrote, sysvg is the volume group used by the KVM host. So I thought the name clashing was the issue. By removing the preseed part I skipped the volume group naming. I can't understand how the virtual machines would be aware of the presence of that volume group since they're supposed to be isolated from it, especially after I removed and recreated the logical volumes dedicated to them. That detail should not be exposed at all to them! Thanks for the help. I'm clueless.

  • OS X borked; need to backup outside of Time Machine

    Quick Background: iMac G5 (the white one; 4 years old?) Running Leopard 10.5.something. Time Machine started failing on me; and every time I touch the Finder, things beachball like crazy. Booting from install disk then using Disk Utility to "Repair Disk" also fails. I'm left with the conclusion that I have a corrupt file somewhere important, that's (i) keeping TM from working and (ii) messing with basic functionality. I am not (yet) savvy enough in OS X to know what logs to look in, or how to decipher them - but 'corrupt file' seems to be the likely case, based on my readings of apple.com forum threads. So I think I need to backup, outside of Time Machine, then install fresh OS X on a new drive (or maybe SpinRite the current drive?). I'm able to put a (non-Time Machine) external USB drive on, so I dragged all 3 Users' folders to that... am I done backing up? Am I going to have a massive Permissions problem, trying to put things back together after a re-install? Thanks for reading.

  • How does it hurt to use Linux (Ubuntu) as a guest OS for all my tasks?

    I have a machine running Windows, where the disk has two partitions C (50 GB) and D (250GB). I do research in Information Retrieval and need to work with a large corpus (more than 50 GB) and in Linux. So if I want to install Linux on the existing system, keeping the Windows installation intact, will it be fine to run it in a virtual box? (say, QEMU, VMWare, etc.) An alternative is using Wubi. In that case the Linux installation has to be on drive C. Then, if I keep a small Linux installation (say 5GB) on C, and my corpus on D (mounted in Linux), how will it affect the performance of my programs which would be accessing the mounted Windows drive D. Is it feasible to use Linux this way? Which of the above is better if at all they are a way out? Note : Since my post in July 2010, I have been using and have tried several ways of maintaining a disk-image that I can mount in Linux. I had a 100GB qcow2 disk and a 100GB raw disk, both formatted to an EXT3 file system. I was mounting and connecting to the qcow2 disk using qemu-nbd. The problem was that every now and then, the connection to the disk would get lost and the running programs would throw disk I/O errors. The raw disk would mount and work fine as a loop mounted device, but when writing data to it, the mount.ntfs program would hog the CPU and the process would take an enormous amount of time. I was in fact running make on a piece of software located on this raw disk, and after a point of time make was waiting while mount.ntfs would show 100% CPU usage.

    I'm currently runing Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty. I want to upgrade to 10.04.02, but whenever I use the Update manager to do this, it fails with the error "An upgrade from 'jaunty' to 'lucid' is not supported with this tool".
