Improving Windows Authentication performance on IIS

We're struggling with performance issues with a ASP.NET MVC site that is using Windows Authentication. Response time is very slow on the first request to the site when the user is being authenticated. Further, every time the Authorization header is sent from the browser the response time increases with many seconds. The same issue occurs for both executed files and static content like CSS and JS. Access to the application is restricted to users within a certain role and we are now planning to allow access to static files for all authenticated users to see if that helps. The authentication method in use is NTLM. How should we go forward in pinpointing why authentication decreases performance drastically?

Im looking for a way of compressing a given string using the Lempel-Ziv Algorithm. Preferably there would only be a set of two functions, encoder and decoder. The encoder takes the string and returns an integer. The decoder takes the integer and returns the original string. Time complexity is not important. How would you implement this?

Why would he say "We don't want to support MVC3"?

I work in a small shop at a fairly big company doing intranet web applications. By small, I mean there is 1 other guy in my position... and he graduated with me last December. (we aren't the only IT, but the only ones in our field) We are switching out an old COBOL system and converting it's only used application suite to a Web App. My company has contracted to a Web Application firm to help with this process who has chosen ASP.NET MVC, during one of the important meetings I asked if they will be using MVC2 or MVC3. Their lead developer said: "MVC2, we don't want to support MVC3. haha" My question is, why is this? This was several months ago and I've been doing extensive and self training gearing up for the MVC switch. From everything I am understanding, MVC3 is just like MVC2 if you don't use Razor and it fixes a number of smaller bugs that MVC2 had. So in my eyes, I can't see any reason to NOT use MCV3. There has to be something I'm missing. Since I don't really have any mentors to turn to in the real world, I'm coming here. What problems are there with MVC3 that might possibly lead him to say this that I'm missing?

"No caching mode page present" when USB flash disk attached

When attaching a USB flash disk (NTFS formatted) to a laptop with Ubuntu Server 12.04 on board, I get following messages: [ 3572.355603] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] No Caching mode page present [ 3572.355640] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through [ 3572.361599] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] No Caching mode page present [ 3572.361636] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through I get them right in the terminal, so that I should press Ctrl+C to proceed with working (entering commands). Is it normal or do I have to setup Caching mode somehow? Thank you.

Static member function pointer to hold non static member function

This has defeated me. I want to have a static class variable which is a pointer to a (non-static) member function. I've tried all sorts of ways, but with no luck (including using typedefs, which just seemed to give me a different set of errors). In the code below I have the static class function pointer funcptr, and I can call it successfully from outside the class, but not from within the member function CallFuncptr - which is what I want to do. Below I have a "button" (just a span with an icon) that creates a pop-up view of a div in my application to allow users to compare information in seperate windows. Problem with caching images on server- jQuery

Hi I have the weirdest problem. I am implementing a simple gallery with a use of nivo slider jQuery plugin. Everything works perfectly when I test it on my local machine, however I am having an issue on an online hosted server. The images do not tend to appear when you first open the website. There seems to be an issue with caching the images. when you reload the page (simple f5) everything works fine. Rather than showing you the code, I think it would be better to show the site so you can see what firebug shows you: http://teslacreations.com/orangery/test.php Does anyone have any ideas how to solve it?

Maximum compression of a MSI install using WIX

I used to build installs for an app with NSIS and the final self extractor was 1.2 MB. Now I need to use WIX due to operational needs and the same install comes out at 4.2 MB. I set the compressed flags as the docs and specs indicated on the package node. Using 7z to zip the MSI results in a 2.4 MB zip file. Question: How can I do a maximum compress on the MSI or create a small MSI (e.g. remove unneeded resources etc) ? Note - size is uber important and I have to use MSI/WIX now - this is a show stopper!

Apache file caching

How does apache handle caching of certain files, and is it possible to explicitly say that certain files should be aggressively cached more than others, through the standard config files for a given host or virtualhost? To put it in context, I keep a lot of site content in various XML files, and I'd like to be able to say that this file will be used a lot, and therefore cache it as much as possible..? Does apache do this kind of thing intelligently and on the fly..? Will it observe which files are more popular than others and try to match cache hits appropriately..? Lots of questions in one, but the basic idea should be clear enough. edit: to be clear, these are resource files which are loaded and interpreted by PHP - but php as a process is spawned inside apache.. right? Please help!

Java code compression and decompression of a string

I am having a problem figuring how to check a string for the same characters in a row then count that same character in a row then printing it out then giving the location of the last occorance of that character count then printing it out then moving to the next character in the string that is different then the previous character and the program is case sensitive. So the input could be: aaaaAAAbbbddccc How would I compress this string to: a4A3b3d2c3 ? and then decompress it?

IIS running but not serving content

I have an internal dev server running Windows 2k8 R2 with the Web and FTP Server roles set up which won't serve any content at all. Trying to connect from another host via telnet yields 'connection failed': c:\>telnet devserver 80 Connecting To devserver...Could not open connection to the host, on port 80: Conn ect failed Using netstat -an | find "80" on the dev server returns no connections on port 80 (a few on 1801, etc) tcpview confirms this, listing no open connections on port 80. The following services related to the Web role are running: World Wide Web Publishing Service Application Host Helper Service Microsoft FTP Service (ftp connections to port 21 are granted) Windows Process Activation Service The default website bindings are: Type Host Name Port IP Address Binding Information http 80 * net.tcp 808:* net.pipe * net.msmq localhost msmq.formatname localhost When setting up a new application under the default site, the test function passes both connection/authorisation only if the 'connect as' user is local admin, otherwise the test errors with 'invalid application path'. At no point is the W3SVC service PID bound to port 80 (it is running and bound to 21 for ftp). There are no W3SVC log directory at c:\inetpub\logs\LogFiles\ (only FTPSVC2), and no HTTPERR directory at c:\windows\system32\ or c:\windows\system32\logfiles\. There do not appear to be any related errors in the event logs. I'd really appreciate any thoughts on be a good place dig into what's (not) going on here!

Need reccomendation for transferring ASP.NET MVC skills to PHP

I am looking to translate my skills in .NET to PHP - specifically in regards to ASP.NET MVC. At work I am currently using .NET MVC 2.0 on a variety of projects and thoroughly enjoy the platform. Specifically I enjoy the very minimal configuration required to get a project up and running (just create the project, define routes, and start coding), as well as the ability for controller actions to return different items (i.e. ActionResult, JsonResult). Another piece I really like is the way the view/model interaction can be handled. For example I like being able to call return View(model) and having a view page (.aspx) load and having the full model object available to the view, regardless of the model type. I'm looking for a PHP implementation of MVC that is the most similiar to what I am already familiar with. I don't anything apart from the MVC functionality. I've looked at Zend, Symfony, CodeIgniter, etc. and, while they look like they'll be fun to play with in the future, they provide much more functionality than I need. I'd prefer to write my own DAL,form helpers, delegate handlers,authentication/ACL pieces, etc. In short, I just need something to handle the routing and view interactions and will worry about the model implementation myself. Can someone please point me to some lightweight code that accomplishes or comes close to accomplishing my objectives above. Or, can someone identify just the portions of a larger framework that do the same (again, I'm not currently interested in implementing something on a big framework, just the MVC portion and want to implement the model portion myself as much as possible). Doing unit and integration tests with the Web API HttpClient

One of the nice things about the new HttpClient in System.Net.Http is the support for mocking responses or handling requests in a http server hosted in-memory. While the first option is useful for scenarios in which we want to test our client code in isolation (unit tests for example), the second one enables more complete integration testing scenarios that could include some more components in the stack such as model binders or message handlers for example. My question is, if I am using Asynchronous Processing=true with SQL Server authentication mode (not Windows authentication mode, i.e. using sa account and password in connection string in web.config), I am wondering whether Asynchronous Processing=true will impact performance of my web application (or depends on my ADO.Net code implementation pattern/scenario)? ASP.NET MVC hosting problem, routing, handlers and modules

Hi, This is one of them again, hosting with fasthosts. I recently purchased a windows developer package from them. When I tried to deploy my ASP.NET 3.5 MVC project, which was working fine with the same host on a reseller account, it is not working. The reason to move from reseller to a normal Windows Developer package is, the MS-SQL server database is too expensive in a reseller account, strange! I contact them, and they are saying they upgraded the control panel. The technical support said, I need to disable the Modules and Handlers from the web.config file. Also I need to deploy them as .dll files. I am not sure how to do that. The website is partially working now. I think the problem is now with the routing. I have not deployed any .dlls apart from the System.Web.Mvc.dll, System.Web.Routing.dll and System.Web.Abstractions.dll. I have not got a clue on how to deploy the Modules and Handlers. The code that I commented on the web.config file is as follows.  Anybody got any ideas please. Thank you for your time.

Creating meaningful routes in wizard style ASP.NET MVC form

I apologize in advance for a long question, figured better have a bit more information than not enough. I'm working on an application with a fairly complex form (~100 fields on it). In order to make the UI a little more presentable the fields are organized into regions and split across multiple (~10) tabs (not unlike this, but each tab does a submit/redirect to next tab). This large input form can also be in one of 3 views (read only, editable, print friendly). The form represents a large domain object (let's call it Foo). I have a controller for said domain object (FooController). It makes sense to me to have the controller be responsible for all the CRUD related operations. Here are the problems I'm having trouble figuring out. Goals: I'd like to keep to conventions so that Foo/Create creates a new record Foo/Delete deletes a record Foo/Edit/{foo_id} takes you to the first tab of the form ...etc I'd like to be able to not repeat the data access code such that I can have Foo/Edit/{foo_id}/tab1 Foo/View/{foo_id}/tab1 Foo/Print/{foo_id}tab1 ...etc use the same data access code to get the data and just specify which view to use to render it. My current implementation has a massive FooController with Create, Delete, Tab1, Tab2, etc actions. Tab actions are split out into separate files for organization (using partial classes, which may or may not be abuse of partial classes). Problem I'm running into is how to organize my controller(s) and routes to make that happen. I have the default route {controller}/{action}/{id} Which handles goal 1 properly but doesn't quite play nice with goal 2. I tried to address goal 2 by defining extra routes like so: routes.MapRoute( "FooEdit", "Foo/Edit/{id}/{action}", new { controller = "Foo", action = "Tab1", mode = "Edit", id = (string)null } ); routes.MapRoute( "FooView", "Foo/View/{id}/{action}", new { controller = "Foo", action = "Tab1", mode = "View", id = (string)null } ); routes.MapRoute( "FooPrint", "Foo/Print/{id}/{action}", new { controller = "Foo", action = "Tab1", mode = "Print", id = (string)null } ); However defining these extra routes causes the Url.Action to generate routs like Foo/Edit/Create instead of Foo/Create. That leads me to believe I designed something very very wrong, but this is my first attempt an asp.net mvc project and I don't know any better. Any advice with this particular situation would be awesome, but feedback on design in similar projects is welcome.
