  • Major inconsistencies in Zend Framework

    Okay first of all let me just say Zend Framework is the greatest tool I have ever used in 30+ years of programming (well, for web development, Qt wins the desktop market). However, through my use I have noticed some glaring and annoying inconsistencies. For instance, Zend_Form_Element's have a setAttrib() method. Now why the hell is this the only method in that API which is abbrev.? Why then am I using setRequired() instead of setReq()? I have more examples, I am extremely nerd raged about this. It is completely ruining what could have been God's gift to web development. FOR FUTURE REFERENCE NEVER ABBREV. THINGS WHEN MAKING AN API. also always filter data before storing it i m o Who do we talk to about this, where something will actually get done about it?

  • Easier way to populate form data and validation data in Code Igniter?

    I'm new to code igniter. I'm following the form validation tutorial found at: http://www.codeignitor.com/user_guide/libraries/validation.html I find I am typing too much in the view to get the form to re-populate. For example, here's what one of my INPUT fields look like: <input type="text" name="email" value="<?=$this->validation->email ? $this->validation->email : $array_db_values['email'] ?>" /> Basically, when the form first loads, it should show a value from the database. If the user alters the value and it fails validation, then the form should post the erroneously submitted value. Does code igniter have a "cleaner" way of rendering this kind of output? Otherwise, I'm going to do something like this in my controller: $array_db_values = getdbresults(); if($_POST['submit']) foreach($_POST as $key=>$val) $array_db_values[$key] = $val; That way, if postback data exists, it will always override database values. Then input fields in my view can simply be: <input type="text" name="email" value="<?=$array_db_values['email'] ?>" /> Is there a better/native CI way to handle this scenario?

  • How do I access abstract private data from derived class without friend or 'getter' functions in C++?

    So, I am caught up in a dilemma right now. How am I suppose to access a pure abstract base class private member variable from a derived class? I have heard from a friend that it is possible to access it through the base constructor, but he didn't explain. How is it possible? There are some inherited classes from base class.   • Store data in an inconvenient table or create a derived table?

    I have a certain predefined database structure that I am stuck with. The question is whether this structure is OK for ORM or I whether should add a processing layer that would create a more convenient structure every time something is inserted into the original DB. To simplify, here's what it kind of looks like. I have a person table: PersonId Name And I have a properties table: PersonId PropertyType PropertyValue So, for person John Doe... (1, 'John Doe') ...I could have three properties: (1, 'phone', '555-55-55'), (1, 'email', '[email protected]), (1, 'type', 'employee') By using ORM I would like to get a "person" object that would have properties "name", "phone", "email", "type". Can Propel do that? How efficient is it? Is it a better idea to create a table with columns "phone", "email", "type" and fill it automatically as new rows are inserted into the properties table?

  • Java Null Pointer Exception :-(

    I've got a Null Pointer Exception in my main that just won't go away and I'm totally out of ideas. The error is on the line "Board[x][y].color = 2;" in which Board is a public, static array of piece objects that contain instance variables like the one "color" that is being set to 2 in the above statement. Pieces is not static - that is there are many different copies of pieces, each with its own data, but only one board. The array has been initialized and defined as both public Piece[][] Board = new Piece[8][8] and public static Piece[][] Board = new Piece[8][8], but no matter how I mess around with it (getting rid of static, putting the variable in another object, etc.), I can't seem to get the error to go away. Help?

  • iPhone: InterfaceBuilder nibs disconnected from my project

    Since upgrading to XCode 3.2, InterfaceBuilder doesn't play nice. All of my image links are broken in IB but they'll show fine when I compile. When I go to the combo box to select an image for my UIImageView, it doesn't have the image files I've added to my app. I also can't create a new .nib and associate it with a class I've written. Like images, my custom viewcontrollers aren't available to pick from. I'm going to try a reinstall but I was curious if anyone's dealt with this?

    Hi..I am using C#.Net and Sql Server ( Windows Application ). I had created a temporary table. When a button is clicked, temporary table (#tmp_emp_details) is created. I am having another button called "insert Values" and also 5 textboxes. The values that are entered in the textbox are used and whenever com.ExecuteNonQuery(); line comes, it throws an error message called "Invalid object name '#tbl_emp_answer'.". Below is the set of code..Please give me a solution.   • Is a web-server (e.g servlets) a good solution for an IM server?

    I'm looking at a new app, broadly speaking an IM application with a strong client-server model - all communications go through a server so they can be logged centrally. The server will be Java in some form, clients could at this point be anything from a .NET Desktop app to Flex/Silverlight, to a simple web-interface using JS/AJAX. I had anticipated doing the server using standard J2EE so I get a thread-safe, multi-user server for 'free'... to make things simple let's say using Servlets (but in practice SpringMVC would be likely). This all seemed very neat but I'm concerned if the stateless nature of Servlets is the best approach. If my memory of servlets (been a year or two) is right, each time a client sent a HTTP request, typically a new message entered by the user, the servlet could not assume it had the user/chat in memory and might have to get it from the DB... regardless it has to look it up. Then it either has to use some PUSH system to inform other members of the chat, or cache that there are new messages, for other clients who poll the server using AJAX or similar - and when they poll it again has to lookup the chat, including new messages, and send the new data. I'm wondering if a better system would be the server is running core Java, and implements a socket-based communication with clients. This allows much more immediate data transfer and is more flexible if say the IM client included some game you could play. But then you're writing a custom server and sockets don't sound very friendly to a browser-based client on current browsers. Am I missing some big piece of the puzzle here, it kind of feels like I am? Perhaps a better way to ask the question would simply be "if the client was browser-based using HTML/JS and had to run on IE7+,FF2+ (i.e no HTML5), how would you implement the server?" edit: if you are going to suggest using XMPP, I have been trying to get my head around this in another question, so please consider if that's a more appropriate place to discuss this specifically.

  • IE showing "decimal" instead of "comma"

    I am having an issue with a slider (implemented using Prototype) and IE7. Upon the slider value change I update a with the value such as "420,000". Now on all browsers other than IE7 this is display correctly. But on IE7 it is displayed as "420.000" .. my question is how did the "," become "." the page has UTF-8 meta tag. Any help?

  • C# cross thread dialogue co-operation

    K I am looking at a primarily single thread windows forms application in 3.0. Recently my boss had a progress dialogue added on a separate thread so the user would see some activity when the main thread went away and did some heavy duty work and locked out the GUI. The above works fine unless the user switches applications or minimizes as the progress form sits top most and will not disappear with the main application. This is not so bad if there are lots of little operations as the event structure of the main form catches up with its events when it gets time so minimized and active flags can be checked and thus the dialog thread can hide or show itself accordingly. But if a long running sql operation kicks off then no events fire. I have tried intercepting the WndProc command but this also appears queued when a long running sql operation is executing. I have also tried picking up the processes, finding the current app and checking various memory values isiconic and the like inside the progress thread but until the sql operation finishes none of these get updated. Removing the topmost causes the dialog to disappear when another app activates but if the main app is then brought back it does not appear again. So I need a way to find out if the other thread is minimized or no longer active that does not involve querying the actual thread as that locks until the sql operation finishes. Now I know that this is not the best way to write this and it would be better to have all the heavy processing on separate threads leaving the GUI free but as this is a huge ancient legacy app the time to re-write in that fashion will not be provided so I have to work with what I have got.   • Sys. engineer has decided to dynamically transform all XSLs into DLLs on website build process. DLL

    Hello, OS: Win XP. Here is my situation. I have a browser based application. It is "wrapped" in a Visual Basic application. Our "Systems Engineer Senior" has decided to spawn DLL files from all of our XSL pages (many of which have duplicate names) upon building a new instance of the website and have the active server pages (ASPX) use the DLL instead. This has created a "known issue" in which ~200 DLL naming conflicts occur and, thus, half of our application is broken. I think a solution to this problem is that, thankfully, we're generating the names of the DLLs and linking them up with our application dynamically. Therefore we can do something kludgy like generate a hash and append it to the end of the DLL file name when we build our website, then always reference the DLL that had some kind of random string / hash appended to its name. Aside from outright renaming the DLLs, is there another way to have multiple DLLs with the same name register for one application? I think the answer is "No, only between different applications using a special technique." Please confirm. Another question I have on my mind is whether this whole idea is a good practice -- converting our XSL pages (which we use in mass -- every time a response from our web app occurs) into DLL functions that call a "function" to do what the XSL page did via an active server page (ASPX), when we were before just sending an XML response to an XSL page via aspx.

I am more interested in embedding Lua, but other people have other embeddings they want to make. I am wondering how you ask for permission, and what they mean by the terms "minor features" and "consistent" and how will Apple interpret this section? It seems to have enough loopholes to drive a real firetruck through.

  • how can an application use port 80/HTTP without conflicting with browsers?

    If I understand right, applications sometimes use HTTP to send messages, since using other ports is liable to cause firewall problems. But how does that work without conflicting with other applications such as web-browsers? In fact how do multiple browsers running at once not conflict? Do they all monitor the port and get notified... can you share a port in this way? I have a feeling this is a dumb question, but not something I ever thought of before, and in other cases I've seen problems when 2 apps are configured to use the same port.
