• Trying to install Proprietory Nvidia Graphics Drivers

  After reading and trying many different suggestions for some hours, I returned to this how-to: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia The first problem I encounter is how to identify which of the listed drivers support my Nvidia GEForce 630M graphics card. Following the links doesn't really help, since it is not stated there either (except where support for a new driver was added later which is explicitly stated, but the original devices covered are not). However, even if I knew, if it doesn't appear in the 'Additional Drivers' dialogue (see below), how will I install it? Second Issue: The article goes on to say that available drivers for my hardware are usually listed in 'Additional Drivers'. In my case, they aren't. Unfortunately, it doesn't tell me how to correct that or work around it? I've checked the bios and there is no way offered there to disable the integrated graphics, only the Nvidia graphics. I've also tried each available option in this: $ sudo update-alternatives --config i386-linux-gnu_gl_conf My system is an Acer Aspire 4752G bought May 2012. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04LTS. uname -a : 3.2.0-38-generic-pae #61-Ubuntu SMP Tue Feb 19 12:39:51 UTC 2013 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux It's 64bit hardware but I installed 32bit OS for greater software compatibility. [ 28.886] (EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found) The reason for wanting the proprietor y drivers is because my laptop comes with 3D accelerated graphics adaptor and so rather than confining myself to struggling with the on-board graphics, I would rather use it. I also want to experiment with using it for bitmining (which uses the GPU's for computing power).

• I can't enable extra effects in Ubuntu 10.10. Please help?

  I installed Ubuntu 10.10 alongside Ubuntu 11.10 to use an older version of Compiz. On Ubuntu 11.10, Compiz was enabled by default and I didn't need to use any graphics driver to enjoy the effects. All I had to do was install CompizConfig Settings Manager and enable those extra effects. That was Compiz 0.9.6. Now, after installing Ubuntu 10.10, when I first logged in, the graphics were slow. When I dragged a window from one end of the screen to the other, the whole screen would blur up and pixelate and it would be very laggy. I tried going to System Preference Appearance and selecting Extra effects on the Visual effects tab, but all I got was "Desktop effects could not be enabled". I don't know whether I should install the Additional drivers (proprietary) because my Internet is slow and it would take a long time. Furthermore, in Ubuntu 11.10, after I installed the proprietary graphics driver, I immediately went into fallback mode and wasn't even offered an option to set my desktop session to Ubuntu 3D. I didn't need the driver to run Compiz in Ubuntu 11.10, it just ran so smoothly. But in Ubuntu 10.10, everything is so laggy. Should I install the ATI/AMD Proprietary FGLRX Graphics Driver for Ubuntu 10.10 to enable extra effects? Or is there something else wrong with my system? • How do I throttle a command in a terminal window?

  I needed to run convert with a lot of images at the same time. The command took quite a while but this doesn't bother me. The issue is that this command rendered my computer unusable while the command was running (for about 15 minutes). So is it possible to throttle the command by limiting resources (processor and memory) to the command, directly from the command line? This can only work if I add something to the same line before pressing Enter because once I start the process the computer slows so much that it is impossible for example to switch to "System monitor" and reduce priority. Edit: top and iotop results I managed to run top and sudo iotop >iotop.txt while doing one of these convert operations. • Ubuntu 10.04 hung on unattended apt-get upgrade?

  I'm looking into why our ubuntu web server hung this morning and see that there was some package upgrades a few hours prior to the problem. I was able to ssh into the system and get a snapshot from top: top - 08:13:54 up 210 days, 8:25, 2 users, load average: 433.30, 422.40, 375.70 Tasks: 1192 total, 381 running, 810 sleeping, 0 stopped, 1 zombie Cpu(s): 0.5%us, 6.1%sy, 0.0%ni, 93.4%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 49549772k total, 48518392k used, 1031380k free, 960152k buffers Swap: 11595768k total, 279368k used, 11316400k free, 39355664k cached This is a 16 processor system, so I would typically expect a load in the low teens. I tried to restart apache, which didn't work, and subsequently had to do a hard reboot to get it working again (which it is). One thing I found was that the server did an unattended package update. Is it possible that upgrading php or curl (which our web sites use) might have caused apache to stop responding? • How to figure out who owns a worker thread that is still running when my app exits?

  Not long after upgrading to VS2010, my application won't shut down cleanly. If I close the app and then hit pause in the IDE, I see this: The problem is, there's no context. The call stack just says [External code], which isn't too helpful. Here's what I've done so far to try to narrow down the problem: deleted all extraneous plugins to minimize the number of worker threads launched set breakpoints in my code anywhere I create worker threads (and delegates + BeginInvoke, since I think they are labeled "Worker Thread" in the debugger anyway). None were hit. set IsBackground = true for all threads While I could do the next brute force step, which is to roll my code back to a point where this didn't happen and then look over all of the change logs, this isn't terribly efficient. Can anyone recommend a better way to figure this out, given the notable lack of information presented by the debugger? The only other things I can think of include: read up on WinDbg and try to use it to stop anytime a thread is started. At least, I thought that was possible... :) comment out huge blocks of code until the app closes properly, then start uncommenting until it doesn't. UPDATE Perhaps this information will be of use. I decided to use WinDbg and attach to my application. I then closed it, and switched to thread 0 and dumped the stack contents. • Whats a good host for an active vBulletin site?

  I've been switching hosts using a VPS each time and I'm just really not sure I'm finding the right VPS's. I've used a VPS from burst.net & rubyringtech and I just feel like it's slowly killing my site because of the slow speed. I really don't know if it's the network or the VPS itself but I really wish to fix this. When I TOP into the VPS peak times it shows this: top - 03:18:56 up 16:33, 1 user, load average: 1.33, 1.40, 1.33 Tasks: 30 total, 1 running, 29 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 27.2%us, 13.6%sy, 0.0%ni, 59.2%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 1048576k total, 679712k used, 368864k free, 0k buffers Swap: 0k total, 0k used, 0k free, 0k cached And pages take atleast a good 2-3 minutes to load. I have only like 50-60 members on the forum also. I had a shared hosting account and the forum was lightning fast.... Is a VPS a bad idea? :\ What should I do to fix this? I'm running lighttpd with xcache, and the latest mysql + php version. The server is a intel i7 2600 w/ 1gb uplink (I think the 1gb uplink is a lie because I've tested the network and the highest download speed I've seen was 20mb/s from a code.google page) All in all I've seen people talking about linode. Should I try them? I honestly don't need a dedicated server yet it's only 50-70 members online. What should I do? I really want a VPS because I enjoy root access. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  Hi, I run a LVM setup on a raid1 created by mdadm. md2 is based on sda6 (major:minor 8:6) and sdb6 (8:22). md2 is partition 9:2. The VG on top of md2 has 4 LVs, var, home, usr, tmp. First the problem: While booting it seems as if the device mapper takes the wrong partition for the mapping! • Ubuntu server has slow performance

  I have a custom built Ubuntu 11.04 server with a 6 disk software RAID 10 primary drive. On it I'm primarily running a PostgreSQL and a few other utilities that stream data from the web. I often find after a few hours of uptime the server starts to lag with all kinds of processes. For example, it may take 10-15 seconds after log-in to get a shell prompt. It might take 5-10 seconds for top to come up. An ls might take a second or two. When I look at top there is almost no CPU usage. There's a fair amount of memory used by the PostgreSQL server but not enough to bleed into swap. I have no idea where to go from here, other than to suspect the RAID10 (I've only ever had software RAID 1's before). • How to stop a ICMP attack?

  We are under a heavy icmp flood attack. Tcpdump shows the result below. Altough we have blocked ICMP with iptables tcpdump still prints icmp packets. I've also attached iptables configuration and "top" result. Is there any thing I can do to completely stop icmp packets? I'm thinking of accomplishing this by programmatically populating a Menu Ring (as shown at http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/FB0409491FAB16FA86256D08004FCE7E). However, I apparently need to convert my array of U64 ints to an array of strings, as it is an array of strings that is used to populate the Menu Ring.   The printf/fprintf/sprintf family supports a width field in its format specifier. I have a doubt for the case of (non-wide) char arrays arguments: Is the width field supposed to mean bytes or characters? What is the (correct-de facto) behaviour if the char array corresponds to (say) a raw UTF-8 string? (I know that normally I should use some wide char type, that's not the point) For example, in char s[] = "ni\xc3\xb1o"; // utf8 encoded "niño" fprintf(f,"%5s",s); Is that function supposed to try to ouput just 5 bytes (plain C chars) (and you take responsability of misalignments or other problems if two bytes results in a textual characters) ? Or is it supposed to try to compute the length of "textual characters" of the array? (decodifying it... according to the current locale?) (in the example, this would amount to find out that the string has 4 unicode chars, so it would add a space for padding).

How can i config my table in order to get the complete text? • WPF: How to efficiently update an Image 30 times per second

  Hello, I'm writing a WPF application that uses a component, and this component returns a pointer (IntPtr) to pixels of a bitmap (stride * height). I know in advance that the bitmap is a 24bits rgb, its width and height. Updating the Image control with these bitmaps makes up a video to the user, but I'm not sure what's the most efficient way to do that, most of the time the CPU usage goes to 75%+ and memory changing from 40mb to 500mb and the nI think GC starts to work and then it drops again to 40mm. The app starts to not be responsive. What shoud I do? thanks!

So far, I've only been able to think of the following possibilities: powershell -file <script> powershell -noprofile -command <scriptblock> The problem is, that they are very slow. For instance, I would like to be able to do: mkdir newdir cd newdir $env:NEW_VAR = 100 ni -item f 'newfile.txt' ...so that my shell's working dir wouldn't change and $env:NEW_VAR wouldn't be set in the global environment.   Overloading __eq, __lt, and __le in a metatable always converts the returning value to a boolean. Is there a way to access the actual return value?
