  • Watch a Machine Get Upgraded from MS-DOS to Windows 7 [Video]

    - by ETC
What happens if you try to upgrade a machine from MS-DOS to Windows 7? One curious geek ran the experiment using VMWare and recorded the whole, surprisingly fluid, ride for our enjoyment. Andrew Tait was curious, what would happen if you followed the entire upgrade arc for Windows from the 1980s to the present all on one machine? Thanks to VMWare he was able to find out, following the upgrade path all the way from MS-DOS to Windows 7. • Activate Your Monitor via Motion Trigger

    - by ETC
Most people are in the habit of jiggling their mouse or tapping their keyboard when they want to wake their monitor. This clever electronics hack adds a sensor to your computer for motion-based monitor activation. At the DIY and electronics blog Radio Etcetera they tackled an interesting project and shared the build guide. Their local volunteer fire department needed a monitor on for quick information checks but they didn’t need it on all the time and they didn’t want to have to walk over and activate the monitor when they needed it. The solution involved hacking a simple infrared security sensor and wiring it via USB to send a mouse command when motion is detected in the room. Fire fighter walks in, monitor turns on and displays information; fire fighter leaves and the monitor goes back to sleep. Hit up the link below to see additional photos, schematics, and the complete build guide. • DropSpace Syncs Android Files to Dropbox

    - by ETC
DropSpace is a free Android application that fixes the primary issue that plagues the official Dropbox app for Android–the lack of true file synchronization. Grab a copy of DropSpace and start enjoying true file syncing on the go. The official Dropbox app is limited to grabbing files from your Dropbox account or pushing files from your phone to your Dropbox account. Actual file synchronization, this manual push/pull model aside, is nowhere to be found. DropSpace fills that gap by enabling file synchronization between your SD card directories and your Dropbox directories. It’s packed with handy features including restricting file syncing to Wi-Fi connection only (great if you don’t want to chew up your very limited data plan) as well as numerous toggles for various settings like whether it should delete remote files if the local file is deleted, how often it should run the sync service, and more. Hit up the link below to grab a copy and take it for a test drive. DropSpace is free and works wherever Android does; Dropbox account required. They’ve rolled out a new Release Candidate update that includes Android 2.3 and a host of performance tweaks. First thing to note is that this is an RC and if you upgrade from CyanogenMod 6 to CyanogenMod 7 RC you’ll be trading a little bit of stability and a few features that haven’t made the jump from 6 to 7 in return for the newest features of Android 2.3. • SnapBird Supercharges Your Twitter Searches

    - by ETC
Twitter’s default search tool is a bit anemic. If you want to supercharge your Twitter search, fire up web-based search tool SnapBird and dig into your past tweets as well as those of friends and followers. Yesterday I was trying to find a tweet I’d sent some time last year regarding my search for an application that could count keystrokes for inclusion in my review of the app I finally found to fulfill the need, KeyCounter. Searching for it with Twitter’s search tool yielded nothing. One simple search at SnapBird and I nailed it. SnapBird requires no authentication to search public tweets (both your own and those of your friends and follows) but does require authentication in order to search through your sent and received direct messages. • Generate documents thumbnails (PDF, Word, Spreadsheets, etc.) from within PHP

    - by titel
Hello guys, I was wondering if there is there is a way to create thumbnails for different types of documents, for instance PDF documents, Word Documents, Spreadsheets, etc, not only for the images, from within PHP? If this would be to hard to accomplish, I would also be interested in a way to achieve something similar only for PDF documents instead. Thank you in advance, Constantin TOVISI

    - by dennisjtaylor
If it is possible to auto-format code before and after a source control commit, checkout, diff, etc. does a company really need a standard code style? It feels like standard coding style debates that have been raging since programming began like "put the bracket on the following line" or "properly indent your (" are no longer essential. I realize in languages where white space matters the diff will have to consider it but for languages where the style is a personal preference is there really a need to worry about it anymore?

I would like to achieve a similar effect to the one in Fatify, Oldify, all those Fat Booths, etc., because I am creating an app where you will throw something at the face and I would the face to jiggle and move when the object hits it. How should I do this?
