• Is there an application I can run that will tell me how fast my computer is running?

  At work I log into a virtual Windows machine. I'm told it runs as fast as a PC, but I'm skeptical. Is there an application I can run on the machine that will tell me how faster the machine is actually running? It would be nice if it ran on Windows and on Mac. Updating with more details -- I was asked "why does it matter" -- here's why: It matters because I'm a programmer and I need as much speed (CPU and memory) as possible to do my work. IMO, the virtual machine is noticeably slower than a basic $800 PC would be, but I need a way a proving it. Websites like Bandwidthtest.com can show me my internet speed, so I'm wondering if there's an app that can test my computer's speed.

• Can I upgrade my computer to run SC2 smoothly?

  My desktop is: ACPI x86 AMD Athlon x2 Dual Core 3600 1.9ghz 1 gig ram NVIDIA Geforce 7300 I'm running 32 bit windows vista. My budget is ~$250 When I play SC2, its incredibly slow and I have to play with the graphics on the LOWEST settings. What can/should I buy (specifically) to get this to run SC2 smoothly? Are max setting possible? I'm not sure what I can get that will be for sure compatible + will actually do the trick. Or is my computer simply too old?

• How complex of a daemon should be run through inetd?

  What is the general rule for which daemons should be started up through inetd? Currently, on my server, sshd, apache and sendmail are set up to run all the time, where simple *NIX services are set up to be started by inetd. I'm the only one who uses ssh on my computer, and break-in attempts aren't a problem because I have it running on a non-standard port, and my HTTP server gets maybe 5 hits a day that aren't GoogleBot. My question is, what are the benefits vs. the performance hits associated with running a complex daemon like sshd or apache through superserver, and what, if any successes or failures have you had running your own daemons in this manner?

• How to run "mongodb --repair" if it's an Upstart job?

  My MongoDB server died. The log says something about an unclean shutdown and an existing mongodb.lock file. It recommends to remove the lock file, then restart the mongodb server with --repair. However, on my system (Ubuntu 10.10), I've installed MongoDB via an apt-get package, and it's set up as Upstart job. If I run mongodb from the command line, it won't find the data, none of the paths are set correctly. Surely, I could read the man page, try to emulate what Upstart would do, give it all the correct parameters plus --repair but that seems like a lot of trouble. There must be a simpler way, that's not fighting Upstart. What is it?

• Can you run Android 2.2 Froyo or 2.3 Gingerbread in a VM?

  I came across a how-to guide for running Android 1.7 in a virtual machine (VirtualBox), but 1.7 is old. I haven't been able to find a Android 2.2 or 2.3 image anywhere, does anyone have any ideas on how to virtualize newer Android OS's? Preferably a free virtualization solution like VirtualBox.   I've set up my zsh to update the XTerm title whenever I change directories. It's neat! Unfortunately I have one common problem, which is this: % cd foo; # title changes to "host1:~/foo" % ssh host2; # title changes to "host2:~" % pwd /home/user/foo # title is still "host2:~" I need to run some command anytime an ssh connection terminates, either chpwd, or cd ., or something similar. I don't think I can use an alias, because I'd need something like alias ssh=ssh $*; cd . but AFAICT you can't pick where the arguments go in an alias.

• My server appears to have been hacked+ scanssh run by zabbix is it normal?

  I'm running a few EC2/Scalr instances with zabbix monitoring. I received complaints about one of my servers port scanning other servers. the logs show it is accessing port 22 on consecutive IP addresses. I looked at the processes list and saw scanssh is running under the user Zabbix. My question is- Is scanssh part of zabbix? Is it suppesd to run? I have active autodiscovery on zabbix but it is looking at another IP addresses and definately not port 20. Is it possible that something in the config of zabbix agent is controlling it and not the settings on zabbix server? What can I do to find out if zabbix is somehow misbehaving or it is a hacker? Any advice is highly appreciated.

  I use WINDOWS 7 (x64) (Russian) I want to stream life audio from my default audio capture device (microphone) When I set up VLM settings using visual enviroment instruments - VLM settings it all works fine. But when I export created settings/configuration *.vlm file and try to inport it into VLM it gives me nothing I opened that .vlm there is some text... so now I try to run VLC with default settings like this: vlc -i dshow:// --dshow-adev= :sout=#transcode{acodec=mp3,ab=128,channels=2,samplerate=44100}:std{access=http,mux=raw,dst=127.0.0.1:8084} but it dies giving me errors...=( So what shall I do to do live MP3 streaming from my default audio input device using VLC in non UI mode?

  Microsoft has a Hyper-V based VM I'm interested in running, however, I don't have access to a Windows Server 2008 machine to try it on, only a Windows 7 Pro x64 machine (Windows 7 does not support Hyper-V).   We've been using KVM for almost a year strictly on CentOS 5.x as the KVM host, with Fedora and Ubuntu workstations accessing the KVM host and its guests using virt-manager, virt-viewer, and ssh. Is anyone aware of a way to access the KVM host using virt-manager from a Windows workstation? We have one co-worker who would like to access the KVM host, from a Win7 system. EDIT #1 I'm familiar with running a X11 server on windows such as Xming, and remote displaying virt-manager from the KVM host to a windows workstation, but what I'd really like here is to know of any solutions native to windows, i.e. is there a version of virt-manager that'll run on windows.

  I have been using Apache Web Server for a while now and one thing I have noticed is that outside of my computer I can not access it. I use my Apache server for PHP development on my computer, but I would like to access stuff I have made outside of my computer. I am on a linksys router network. I usually run it of http://localhost/ or http://127.0.0.1/. I IPCONFIGED my computer and got 192.168.1.105 so I went there with my browser and got the page just fine. I control a public facing Linux VPS with one IP address, outside my home network. Ideally, what I'd like to do is set something up so that I connect my home computer to my VPS, and after that port X on my VPS leads to port Y on my home computer, for the purposes of running a game server of a game that does not run under Linux. • PsExec - what if the .exe you run remotely requires user interaction?

  I use PsExec to deploy small .exe files to my workstations. Sometimes the .exe, for some reason, is incompatible with the system and opens a popup window with an error or some other message. Is there any way to know when the executable is 'stuck' there requiring user interaction? On my side I just have psexec running and waiting for the .exe to return (which will never return because the popup is stuck there). Since I run PsExec programmatically and I automate all the executions, when this Popup thing happens I find myself with hundreds of psexec processes stuck there and have no result back from them.. What's the best way to handle this sort of issue? Thanks.

  Does anybody know of any modules that provide the functionality to write python or PHP code to run as hooks in the Apache request processing pipeline? For instance, mod_perl lets me write PerlModules, which can contain handlers for the header parsing phase, content delivery, and even filters. I would like to do something similar in other scripting languages. I could write it in C, but the goal is to deploy a module that would work across a number of systems. If I deliver it as binary in C, then it would require 64/32-bit versions and some other issues. With perl, I can just require certain modules installed and mod_perl2.

  Hi! I try to run some Munin plugins written in Ruby. I would like to use RVM, so Munin needs to know where to find Ruby. I tried to change the line calling munin-cron in the cron file as follows: */5 * * * * munin bash -c 'source /usr/local/lib/rvm && rvm 1.9.2@munin && /usr/bin/munin-cron' This leads to error messages in munin-node.log, saying /usr/bin/env: ruby: No such file or directory When I change the plugins' shebangs to the actual path of the Ruby executable it works, but the RVM environment should be set so that '/usr/bin/env ruby' works. It does when I execute the plugins as root. Any ideas?

• My powershell script wont save a file when run using Task Scheduler, do I need to specify a specific argument?

  I have a script that downloads a temporary Excel file, copies parts of it to a new file, and saves it to a specific location on the network. The problem I'm having is that the new file is never created/saved. If I run the script locally (through cmd.exe, powershell, or powershell ise), it WILL save the file locally, or to the network. If I try running the script via a schedule or on-demand via Task Scheduler, the temporary file is created, but the final document is never created or saved. Is there a specific argument I need to pass, or anything I could be doing wrong? This is the command I'm currently using: powershell.exe -file C:\path\to\my\powershell\script\thescript.ps1 Since it calls environment variables, and other variables relative to the scripts positon, I also set "Start in" to C:\path\to\my\powershell\script\

• Run a server and local wireless network off my laptop with no internet.

  I'm trying to run a wireless network from my computer so that people in range can connect to the network and hit a website running off my machine. I don't want to enable file sharing or remote access or anything else of that nature. I just want them to be able to connect to the network, type in an IP or domain name in a browser, and be taken to a locally hosted website. No broader internet access needed. • Enable a program in Windows to run multiple times?

  I've got this legacy software that only allows you to run one copy at a time, it detects that you have another session opened and it won't allow you to open a second instance. The problem is this is a cpu intensive program and it only use a single core. Is there any hacks or tweaks so I can trick it and open more than one instance? This would allow me to retire about 5 servers... I'm using Windows 2008 R2. I had to use cff explorer to enable the use more than 2GB RAM as the program crashes when it tries to use more than 2GB.

  I'm using Dreamweaver CS5.5 for an HTML prototype that is built with image-mapped screenshots. I am using JavaScript to dynamically include the appropriate main image, and the navigation is done with image maps. Is it possible to have the Dreamweaver "Design View" run JavaScript initially (which will set the main image) and also allow me to edit the image maps in place (so I can see them placed over the correct main image)? I found some references to the "Live View" feature, which runs JavaScript successfully, but I cannot see or edit image maps in "Live View".

• Recommendations for a cloud/hosted server environment that can run different Windows VMs?

  I currently have a colocated Win 2008 server that I use for hosting different windows VMs for testing: Win 2008, Win XP, Vista, Win7, Win 2000. I'd like to ditch the server and use something like Amazone AWS but the key thing is I need to be able to launch VMs for these different windows versions. AWS doesn't allow this currently. Can anyone recommend somewhere that I could use? The main reasons I want to get away from my own server are: administration: backup, windows updates, etc space: disk limitations mean I can't have all the VMs I want. I'd like to be able to pay for space incrementally. I'll typically only run 1-3 at a time but want lots of snapshots of different machines.

• How can I make Bash (or Zsh) run a particular command before each entered command?

  I'd like to configure Bash to run a particular command before running each command line I enter at the prompt. Specifically, I'd like to tell Vim (which is running in another terminal) to write all open buffers, because in my workflow if anything's unsaved when I leave Vim it's a mistake. Is there an option for this in Bash? If not, is there an option in Zsh? (There is a readline-based solution that somewhat fits this problem on another question, but it feels a bit hacky. It'll take it as a last resort.)
