I'm getting unrelated system messages in terminal?

For some reason from time to time I keep getting this weird system messages in my working terminal emulator, unrelated to anything I do.For example: [000:000] Browser XEmbed support present: 1 [000:000] Browser toolkit is Gtk2. [000:001] Using Gtk2 toolkit [000:033] Starting client channel. [000:048] Read port file, port=33359 [000:050] Initiated connection to GoogleTalkPlugin [000:154] Socket connection established [000:154] ScheduleOnlineCheck: Online check in 5000ms [000:203] Got cookie response, socket is authorized [000:203] AUTHORIZED; socket handshake complete [005:216] HandleOnlineCheck: Starting check [005:216] HandleOnlineCheck: OK; current state: 3 Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory After some investigation I concluded that those messages ARE from firefox.However, I didn't start Firefox from terminal. or nsBuiltinDecoderStateMachine::RunStateMachine queuing nsBuiltinDecoder::PlaybackEnded nsBuiltinDecoder::PlaybackEnded mPlayState=3 nsBuiltinDecoderStateMachine::RunStateMachine queuing nsBuiltinDecoder::PlaybackEnded nsBuiltinDecoder::PlaybackEnded mPlayState=3 I have no clue how this ends up in working terminal, any thoughts ?

Checking is sides of cubes are solid

In relation to this question: http://gamedev.stackexchange.com/a/28524/31664 And a question I asked earlier: Creating a DrawableGameComponent And also because my internet is too slow to get on chat. I'm wondering how to check if the sides of a cube are solid. I've created 12 methods, each one creating indices and vertices for sides of a cube. Now when I use these methods, the cube creates how it should. All 6 sides show up and its like I didnt change a thing. How can use if statements to check if the side of a cube is solid? The pseudocode from the question above shows this: if(!isSolidAt(x+1,y,z)) verticesToDraw += AddXPlusFace(x,y,z) But in my case is would be: if(!sideIsSolid) SetUpFrontFaceIndices(); My method simply takes these index and vertex values and adds them to a list indicesToDraw and verticesToDraw, as shown in the answer above

Shelving code in Team Foundation Server (TFS)

I'm pretty new at using TFS and I'd like to know how you or your team use the "shelve" function of tfs. We have the following guidelines in using TFS: - perform a "Get Latest" before you check in and try to build/compile - do not check in code that does not compile - at the end of the day, if your work is not complete/partially done, you should "shelve" your pending changes The first two make sense but I don't really get the last one. I asked my mgr and he said that its so he knows that you actually did some work for that day, which does kind of makes sense but still, I'm wondering what other teams use the "shelve" function for?

Checking whether php script was resolved by optimal way

Can anybody give some advise how to check the arbitrary php code on optimal solution. For example I create a simple algorithm and sent it on the special resource. After proccessing my algorithm this resource give me result whether my code is nice. If no it give me some advice and tell what is wrong (maybe I forgot check devision by zero etc). I looked for php code analyzer but could't find any variants. Maybe someone give me a resource where I can research this problem. Thanks in advance!

Updated Payroll Tax Liability Formula for Dynamics GP

Prior to the latest Payroll Update for Great Plains, you could do an audit check of the Payroll Tax Liability GP calculation by simply taking Federal Tax Witholding + Fica Medicare Withholding times 2 + Fica SSN times 2. As you probably know by now, the Employers portion of FICA is 6.2% and the Employers portion has been reduced to 4.2%. However, I have had a number of clients contact me and say this formula is no longer applicable and have asked for a revised formula. The new formula is described below and ties out to a sample Payroll Run using Fabrikam. As you can see from above, the prior formula is not applicable and the new audit check is as follows; Federal Tax WH $ 6,655.17 Employee Medicare $ 408.47 Employees SS $ 1,746.54 Employer Medicare $ 408.47 Employer SS $ 1,746.55 (FICA Owned – FICA Medicare WH) Total Tax Liability $ 10,965.20 I have talked with Microsoft and at this time, they have no intent on modifying the report to split out the employer (6.2%) and employee (4.2%) FICA portions.

Google Analytics showing more unique visitors than there are pages on an intranet site

I take care of a company intranet and measure the traffic with GA. I am absolutely sure that there are no more than 5000 URLs in our company and it is impossible to check the intranet from outside the company network. Yet when I check the number of Unique Visitors (UV) in the last year GA says there were 36.500 of them. How is that possible? I thought UV should measure each URL only once in the given time period. Could anybody explain how this actually works? Can it be that the cookie trackers expire after some time and are counted more then once?

The problem: When we were sending newsletters to customers, there was no way to confirm if the customer already received the mail. So the boss decided to implement this idea: Boss's Idea: Each time mail was being sent, do an INSERT in a db with the title of the newsletter being sent and the email address which is receving the email address. To ensure that any email address does not receive the same email twice, do a SELECT in the table and find the title of the newsletter being sent: if (title of newsletter is found) { check to see of the email we are sending mail to is already present. if it does, do not send mail } else { send mail } MY idea: create a column called unique and mark it as UNIQUE. Each time mail was being sent, concatenate email + newsletter id and record it in the UNIQUE row. The next time we do a "mysql_affected_rows" check to see if our INSERT was successful, we send the mail, else, there is already a duplicate and no need to send it.

Stuff I learned at Innovate 2011

After returning from the NRF Innovate 2011 conference, I picked up few nuggets I thought I'd share here. These thoughts are a bit random, but I hope they're useful nonetheless.Kevin Kelly opened the conference with six verbs that represent the future. They were Screening, Interacting, Sharing, Accessing, Flowing, and Generating. It struck me that these are all ways in which we merge the digital and physical worlds. The internet of things continues to gain momentum.Some buzzwords: deal economy, subscription commerce, discovery (instead of search), curationThat last one, curation, came up over and over. Retailers, especially those in fashion, are finding value in helping their customers organize and present their own collections. Social media has made sharing such collections easy, and mobile lets them take those ideas into the stores. Mannequins are becoming less relevant.I heard from both HauteLook and Gilt Groupe (flash sale retailers) that a large percentage of their visits come from mobile devices, and most of those are iOS devices. I find it interesting that even though Android has passed iPhone in units shipped (and will eventually pass iOS as a whole), its still the Apple crowd that leads the way.RadioShack mentioned their Holiday Heroes campaigned was very successful. They asked their Foursquare users to check-in at a gym, coffee shop, and transportation hub as part of being a hero. For this feat, customers were awarded a special badge that was worth 20% off at their next store visit. They claim a 3.5x increase in ticket size vs. regular check-in customers, and a 5x increase vs those that don't check-in at all.I also learned of RadioShack's #28 campaign, which is apparently one of the largest Twitter trends ever. Their partnership with LIVESTRONG has gotten them followers, impressions, and credit for supporting the fight against cancer.The guys at Invodo showed the importance of video to e-commerce. They gave compelling examples of how video can show customers the value of products better than just words.The highlight of the show was Guy Kawasaki's talk on innovation, which was not only informative but also peppered with humor and personality. Back in the early days of the internet boom, Guy turned down the CEO position at Yahoo! because the commute was too long. How to find corrupted files?

Some files on my hard drive are corrupted (no worries, nothing system-related, just a junk of data files, mp3 etc.). I found that out when I tried to burn them all to a DVD, the burning application show a message that it cannot read the files as they are corrupted. [This is probably a drive issue, it had happened me once or twice already]. I don't care about recovering them, but I have to determine which ones are corrupted. I cannot check by manually opening them all, as there are thousands of them. Is there any tricky way to check all the files and list the ones that may cause problems when tried to open?

Two separate emails arrived in my Inbox. Email #1: The results of detailed survey of UK ISVs which we had commissioned – what makes them tick etc. In that survey it stated “76% of ISVs do not use any ALM tools”. It also stated that of those that did, most only did the basics. I#m not surprised … but I am disappointed.
