• IWebBrowser2.Navigate opens second window

  The following code, on Vista with Internet Explorer 7, opens two windows (the one I create, and then a second one when Navigate is called, which is the one that the file appears in). This doesn't happen in Internet Explorer 8, or on XP as far as I know. Any idea how I can stop it doing that? • Coerce Windows to show a thumbnail for my custom file type.

  Hi, I want to use the windows OpenFileDialog class in C# to browse files for my application. I would then like the files to show up with previews in Windows' "thumbnails" view. Is there a simple way to make this happen? I'm thinking there should be a way to encode the files so that Windows simply reads and displays the thumbnail information, even though it's an unsupported file type? I know Windows Vista has a different interface (IThumbnailProvider as opposed to IExtractImage) than Windows XP, but I need it to work across platforms. Thanks! / Jakob

  In a small project of mine I've came across the need of a collapsible group box. Searching the Net, I've found one here. In one of the comments there's an improvement on the original code that uses the VisualStyleRenderer class in order to acquire the TreeView open and closed glyph. Running the code it draws properly the Plus and Minus sing as Windows XP would draw it, however in Windows Vista and Windows 7 the glyph for open and closed nodes are small triangles. What kind of interface, class or PInvoke, I need to use in order to acquire the right glyph?

• Tips for resolving Hibernate/JPA EntityNotFoundException

  I'm running into a problem with Hibernate where when trying to delete a group of Entities I encounter the following error: javax.persistence.EntityNotFoundException: deleted entity passed to persist: [com.locuslive.odyssey.entity.FreightInvoiceLine#<null>] These are not normally so difficult to track down as they are usually caused by an entity being deleted but not being removed from a Collection that it is a member of. In this case I have removed the entity from every list that I can think of (it's a complex datamodel). I've put JBoss logging into Trace and I can see the collections that are being cascaded. However I can't seem to find the Collection containing the entity that I'm deleting. Does anyone have any tips for resolving this particular Exception? Thanks.

  Is it possible to access Desktop Composition Engine in Windows Vista from a winforms application? The DCE apparently involves applications rendering to DCE buffers instead of directly to the screen. Since a winforms app has no way of getting information about the monitor's refresh rate and scanline status (other than via DirectX), animation in a winforms app is subject to tearing effects. With DCE enabled, the tearing effects are lessened but still there (apparently the DCE can still grab a buffer that your app is halfway through writing to and render it to the screen, thereby producing the half-one-frame-half-of-the-next tearing effects). Is there any way for my winforms app to communicate with the DCE and possible avoid rendering during buffer switchover times?

  Hello - I'm looking for some feedback, blog links, etc that offer some tips and tricks for iPhone GPS development. I've read and understand the API, I have my demo app up and running, etc but I have run into some "quirks" with gps on iphone. For example, it seems that you you will receive a lot less location updates when your iphone enters "power save" mode. I've read that you can combat this by playing music in your application [not sure if this is true]. It also seems that, terms of making a reasonable pedometer, you should filter out any reading with horizontal accuracies less than 20 meters. Does this sound right? Is there any kind of checklist out on the web for iphone gps gotchas? Thanks in advance.

  My knowledge of commandline bash is missing on a particular area: I constantly forget how to properly escape characters. Today I wanted to echo this string into a file: #!/bin/env bash python -m SimpleHTTPServer echo "#!/bin/env bash\npython -m SimpleHTTPServer" server.sh && chmod +x server.sh -bash: !/bin/env: event not found That's right: Remember to escape ! or bash will think it's a special bash event command. But I can't get the escaping right! \! yields \! in the echoed string, and so does \\!. Furthermore, \n will not translate to a line break. Do you have some general tips that makes it easier for me to understand escaping rules? To be very precise, I'll accept an answer which tells me which characters I should escape on the bash command line? Including how to correctly output newline and exclamation mark in my example.

  Myself and some colleagues have just been told that we are all taking the EPiServer CMS certification exam on Friday. Having done some research on the web it does sound like a challenging exam - I've heard that only one in six people pass it.   How can I go about deploying a Rails app on a cluster of Amazon EC2 servers? Any recommended guides? I maintain a RoR app (currently hosted on Heroku) that uses a DB and DelayedJobs). The app has a large footprint, and needs to be distributed on a cluster most likely. Any tips would be appreciated. Are there Amazon AMIs that replicate some of Heroku's features (especially DJ)? • Visual Studio 2008 - Focus on textbox doesn't work when run from VS2008 as admin

  This is a minor, esoteric problem and not a showstopper, but I'm wondering what other VS2008 idiosyncrasies are out there. If you make a web app, add a textbox and run a focus function for the textbox on page load, it works when you run VS not as administrator from a Vista non-administrator account or if you run the page from a browser instance run on its own, not from VS. If you browse the page from VS as Admin, the focus doesn't work. This for Cassini and from the local IIS. Stuff like this just makes me trust VS a tad less.

  I have a custom application in C++ that has been used to successfully copy-and-paste an object from the application into MS Office 2003 and 2007 (Word, Excel and PowerPoint). The object opens in our own custom activeX control. Now with windows XP and PowerPoint 2010, nothing happens on the cut-and-paste. I have tried turning off the smart copy/paste to no avail. Copy/paste works with Word and Excel 2010. Do you have tips on how to debug this? Thanks Andrew

  I am developing large data collecting ASP.Net/Windows service application-pair that uses Microsoft SQL Server 2005 through LINQ2Sql. Performance is always the issue. Currently the application is divided into multiple larger processing parts, each logging the duration of their work. This is not detailed and does not help us with anything. It would be nice to have some database tables that contain statistics that the application itself collected from its own behavior. What logging tips and data structures do you recommend to spot the parts that cause performance problems?

  Greetings, I am trying to figure out which C/C++ compiler to use. I found this list of C/C++ compilers at Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_compilers#C.2FC.2B.2B_compilers I am fairly certain that I want to go with an open source compiler. I feel that if it is open source then it will be a more complete compiler since many programmer perspectives are used to make it better. Please tell me if you disagree. I should mention that I plan on learning C/C++ mainly to program 2D/3D game applications that will be compatible with Windows, Linux, MAC and iPhone operating systems.   It seems like optimization is a lost art these days. Wasn't there a time when all programmers squeezed every ounce of efficiency from their code? Often doing so while walking 5 miles in the snow? In the spirit of bringing back a lost art, what are some tips that you know of for simple (or perhaps complex) changes to optimize C#/.NET code? Since it's such a broad thing that depends on what one is trying to accomplish it'd help to provide context with your tip. For instance: When concatenating many strings together use StringBuilder instead. If you're only concatenating a handful of strings it's ok to use the + operator. Use string.Compare to compare 2 strings instead of doing something like string1.ToLower() == string2.ToLower()

  Update: So, this turns out to have nothing to do with Tortoise SVN. I use Mozy.com for off-site backups and their new version includes these icon overlays. They can be disabled via the config options...or see here http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?p=1385433. Thanks @OS for the answer. Been using Tortoise SVN for some time on my Vista box. Within the last few days (and after recently upgrading to 1.5.4) the icon overlays are displaying on all files. My exclude path is: * My include paths are: C:\Users\jw\Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\SVNProjects* C:\Users\jw\Documents\VB Projects\SVNProjects* I haven't touched those settings in months. • How to find out who's causing an access violation error?

  I'm getting reports that my app is causing a GPF on some Vista machines. The error message is something like this: access violation at 0x75784062 ( tried to write to 0x00000006) In order to fix this, I first need to know exactly who is causing this GPF: my main exe, some third party component, one of my own activex components, a dll, etc... How can I find this out? What tools can pinpoint the exact module that caused this mess? Any help would be greatly appreciated. PS My app is coded in VB6 and my activex controls are written in Delphi 2007.

• Changing The Underlying Background Color Of A Swing Window

  As discussed here, when resizing a Swing application in Vista (and Windows 7, which is what I'm using) you get a black background in the right/bottom corner while Swing's repaint catches up to the changes. Playing with other applications (Windows Explorer (Native), Firefox (C++?), and Eclipse (Java)) I notice that they all have this same problem - contrary to what the folks in the link above say - but they minimize the problem by having a grey fill color, which is far less visually jarring than the black that appears in Swing. I'm wondering if there's some way to change this so that Swing behaves like these other applications? I tried setting the background color of the JFrame, but to no avail.

  I got dpm($form) working. Nice! This is much better way to view data. I am still trying to figure out where stuff is coming from eg: location longitude & latitude. The word 'longitude' is referenced in 20 different places.   Using Crystal Reports 8.5 on Windows Vista or 7, I'm using the ToText function to report a value: totext(Sum ({ap121w7.yrentamt}, {@type1099})*100,"000000000000000000") The result (if yrentamt is 0) is -000000000000000000 The dash (I assume it's a negative sign) is unneccessary and unwanted in my report. Is this a bug, or is there an easy solution? --Note-- I would very much like to avoid the following: if {ap121w7.yrentamt}=0.00 then yrentamt := "000000000000" else yrentamt := totext({ap121w7.yrentamt}*100,"000000000000"); I have about 100 files to fix with multiple formulas per file, and the above solution doesn't seem to work consistently either.
