• Encryption over gigabit carrier ethernet

  I would like to encrypt traffic between two data centres. Communication between the sites is provided as a standard provider bridge (s-vlan/802.1ad), so that our local vlan tags (c-vlan/802.1q) are preserved on the trunk. The communication traverse several layer 2 hops in the provider network. Border switches on both sides are Catalyst 3750-X with the MACSec service module, but I assume MACSec is out of the question, as I don't see any way to ensure L2 equality between the switches over a trunk, although it may be possible over a provider bridge. MPLS (using EoMPLS) would certainly allow this option, but is not available in this case. Either way, equipment can always be replaced to accommodate technology and topology choices. How do I go about finding viable technology options that can provide layer 2 point-to-point encryption over ethernet carrier networks?

  I am new to xen and I am trying to get a domU running but I am having problems with it. I think my network card might not support bridging which is bizarre. • How to export an image from Photoshop to PDF while preserving the exact size?

  There used to be a PDF export option in Photoshop, but it's gone in CS4. What replaced it is Bridge, however no matter what I do, Bridge ends up resizing my image. The physical dimensions (cm/inches) in the final PDF are not what they are in Photoshop. Any tips on exporting an image without messing up its size? (Clarification: I want the final PDF to contain a page of the size I specify, with a white background, and my image positioned somewhere on this page such that the image width/height in cm is exactly the same in the PDF as it was in Photoshop.)

• Is there a suitable chain for iptables when eth is in Promisc mode?

  I have a fron-end machine. Machine have2 eth cards. I want to use netfilter queue to do some checks on the packets. I set eth like this: ifconfig eth0 0.0.0.0 promisc up ifconfig eth1 0.0.0.0 promisc up I want to have an iptable rule like this(only example): iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -j LOG --log-prefix " eth0 packet " but the packet is no passed through the iptables ,because it dosnt target to this MAC. Promisc mode didnt help. I saw that there is a way to add iptables chain for PROMISC, but need compilation... Is there any simplier way to have iptables rule when packet is not target to this eth. Currently i bypass this by creating a bridge between 2 eth and put rule on the FORWARD, but i done want to create bridge.

• netgear GS108TV2 RSTP configuration

  I have a large set of GS108TV2 units--my goal is to set up a network which is comprised of several loops for redundancy/fault tolerance. I have a minimal 3 switch loop configured, with RSTP enabled on two ports on each switch. I have my bridge max age set to 6, and my bridge forward delay set to 4, which are the minimum values allowed. Hello time is fixed at 2 seconds. The switches respond to a cable being removed from a socket, but it takes too long. I cannot get the switch to respond to a loss of connection on one of the redundant ports in less than 20 seconds. Is there any way to configure these switches to respond faster than 20 seconds? That is unacceptable for my application. thanks in advance for any help

• Time Capsule + Ubee Router?

  I can't for the life of me figure this out. I recently had TWC installed in my house, and wanted to disable the NAT and router functions of it. I have a Time Capsule hooked up to it from LAN1 (on the Ubee) to the WAN port on the TC. The problems started occurring here. I figured the settings would be these: Ubee Configuration mode: Bridge DHCP: Off TC IPv4: 192.168.100.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Router Address: 192.168.100.1 DNS Servers: 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 Router Mode: DHCP and NAT But using those settings, my TC says "Double NAT", so I have to change it all around to the default settings of the Ubee using NAT. This leads me to believe bridge mode doesn't actually turn off NAT...

• Why can't my FreeBSD 6.1 (vmware player client under Win7) do DNS in Bridged mode.

  I have a 64-bit FreeBSD 6.1 client, running under Windows 7 (64-bit) via VMWare player 3.0, with networking set to bridge mode. DHCP goes fine on boot... I get correct adress/gateway/nameserver info... I have good connectivity to the world in that I can ping any host I can name by IP addr, (including both of the nameservers in resolv.conf,) ...but I can't resolve any names. Inside the Windows box, the network interface has VMWare Bridge Protocol enabled, and the windows side of things has full connectivity. dig replies with: ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached ...even if I use "dig @server_ip_addr" to point it at a pingable, working nameserver If I set VM networking to NAT mode, I can get outbound connectivity (with happy DNS) but, of course, can't do INBOUND connectivity, which I need. Thoughts?

• Howto setup a `veth` virtual network

  I'd like to setup three virtual network interfaces (veth) which can communicate with each other. To simulate a three node cluster, each program then binds to one veth interface. I'd like to do it without LXC if possible. I tried using: Created three veth pairs: sudo ip link add type veth Created a bridge sudo brctl addbr br0 Added one of each pair to the bridge: sudo brctl addif br0 veth1 sudo brctl addif br0 veth3 sudo brctl addif br0 veth5 Configured the interfaces: sudo ifconfig veth0 10.0.0.201 netmask 255.255.255.0 up sudo ifconfig veth2 10.0.0.202 netmask 255.255.255.0 up sudo ifconfig veth4 10.0.0.203 netmask 255.255.255.0 up Then I verified if is works using: ping -I veth0 10.0.0.202 but it doesn't :( The I added IP addresses to the veth1,veth3,veth5 and br0 interfaces in the 10.0.1.x/24 range. But that doesn't help. Any ideas? or a guide, all I find in how to use it with LXC. Or am I trying something that isn't possible?

  I consider myself fairly avid with Ubuntu and Linux, but this one has me stumped. I built up a Xen Server using Ubuntu 12.04 as the base operating system. It has multiple domUs running on it. My home network has a statically defined network where I got all the network connectivity going peachy. The server was moved to a permanent home this morning. So, the network configuration on the main system had to change. Again, another static network, but now I can't ping the upstream gateway from the host. As the VMs use this NIC over a bridge, they too are broken. Ping responds with "destination host unreachable." I simplified the networking down to a simple static network as seen below (no bridge or anything) just to get it to work. Here's the contents of my /etc/network/interfaces file: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 216.7.188.228 gateway 216.7.188.225 netmask 255.255.255.240 broadcast 216.7.188.255 network 216.7.188.0 dns-nameservers 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4 Here's the contents of route -n 0.0.0.0 216.7.188.225 0.0.0.0 UG 100 0 0 eth0 216.7.188.224 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.240 U 0 0 0 eth0 And the results of pinging the gateway: PING 216.7.188.225 (216.7.188.225) 56(84) bytes of data.   I was running 13.04 since last monday and just today i upgraded to 13.10, in both of these version i have not managed to get my sound working. I have gone into alsamixer and disabled auto mute and the volumes are up. However if somebody thinks they can help me fix this i will gladly follow any steps.   I have an Alienware Dell PC with Intel HD 4000 Graphics (Ivy Bridge) as verified by the output of lspci | grep VGA posted below. 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Ivy Bridge Graphics Controller (rev 09) The PC only has HDMI and DVI display outputs and using the HDMI output I am only being offered abnormal resolutions. • I can't enable extra effects in Ubuntu 10.10. Please help?

  I installed Ubuntu 10.10 alongside Ubuntu 11.10 to use an older version of Compiz. On Ubuntu 11.10, Compiz was enabled by default and I didn't need to use any graphics driver to enjoy the effects. All I had to do was install CompizConfig Settings Manager and enable those extra effects. That was Compiz 0.9.6. Now, after installing Ubuntu 10.10, when I first logged in, the graphics were slow. When I dragged a window from one end of the screen to the other, the whole screen would blur up and pixelate and it would be very laggy. I tried going to System Preference Appearance and selecting Extra effects on the Visual effects tab, but all I got was "Desktop effects could not be enabled". I don't know whether I should install the Additional drivers (proprietary) because my Internet is slow and it would take a long time. Furthermore, in Ubuntu 11.10, after I installed the proprietary graphics driver, I immediately went into fallback mode and wasn't even offered an option to set my desktop session to Ubuntu 3D. I didn't need the driver to run Compiz in Ubuntu 11.10, it just ran so smoothly. But in Ubuntu 10.10, everything is so laggy. Should I install the ATI/AMD Proprietary FGLRX Graphics Driver for Ubuntu 10.10 to enable extra effects? Or is there something else wrong with my system? • Google Music Player doesn't work

  I'm trying to log in on Google Music Player application but doesn't work. I get the message below: Login Failed Could not identify your computer. Learn More On Google Help it says that it doesn't run on virtual machines, which is not my case, but I have a virtualbox installed though, and it says some people get to work if they disable their bridge network. The thing is I don't have any bridge interface, even if I remove all virtualbox modules I still get this message. Different organizations have different levels of network security requirements. Security Risks Not all security breaches result from a manipulation of network technology – there are human factors that can play a role as well. The following categories are areas of considerations… Risks associated with People Risks associated with Transmission and Hardware Risks associated with Protocols and Software Risks associated with Internet Access An effective security policy A security policy identifies your security goals, risks, levels of authority, designated security coordinator and team members, responsibilities for each team member, and responsibilities for each employee. In addition it specifies how to address security breaches. It should not state exactly which hardware, software, architecture, or protocols will be used to ensure security, nor how hardware or software will be installed and configured. A security policy must address an organizations specific risks. to understand your risks, you should conduct a security audit that identifies vulnerabilities and rates both the severity of each threat and its likelihood of occurring. Security Policy Content Security policy content should… Policies for each category of security Explain to users what they can and cannot do and how these measures protect the networks security Should define what confidential means to the organization Response Policy A security policy should provide for a planned response in the event of a security breach. The response policy should identify the members of a response team, all of whom should clearly understand the the security policy, risks, and measures in place. Some of the roles concerned could include… Dispatcher – the person on call who first notices the breach Manager – the person who coordinates the resources necessary to solve the problem Technical Support Specialist – the person who focuses on solving the problem Public relations specialist – the person who acts as the official spokesperson for the organization Physical Security An important element in network security is restricting physical access to its components. There are various techniques for this including locking doors, security people at access points etc. You should identify the following… Which rooms contain critical systems or data and must be secured Through what means might intruders gain access to these rooms How and to what extent are authorized personnel granted access to these rooms Are authentication methods such as ID cards easy to forge etc. Security in Network Design The optimal way to prevent external security breaches from affecting you LAN is not to connect your LAN to the outside world at all. The next best protection is to restrict access at every point where your LAN connects to the rest of the world. Router Access List – can be used to filter or decline access to a portion of a network for certain devices. Intrusion Detection and Prevention While denying someone access to a section of the network is good, it is better to be able to detect when an attempt has been made and notify security personnel. This can be done using IDS (intrusion detection system) software. One drawback of IDS software is it can detect false positives – i.e. an authorized person who has forgotten his password attempts to logon. Firewalls A firewall is a specialized device, or a computer installed with specialized software, that selectively filters or blocks traffic between networks. A firewall typically involves a combination of hardware and software and may reside between two interconnected private networks. The simplest form of a firewall is a packet filtering firewall, which is a router that examines the header of every packet of data it receives to determine whether that type of packet is authorized to continue to its destination or not. Firewalls can block traffic in and out of a LAN. NOS (Network Operating System) Security Regardless of the operating system, generally every network administrator can implement basic security by restricting what users are authorized to do on a network. Some of the restrictions include things related to Logons – place, time of day, total time logged in, etc Passwords – length, characters used, etc Encryption Encryption is the use of an algorithm to scramble data into a format that can be read only by reversing the algorithm. The purpose of encryption is to keep information private. Many forms of encryption exist and new ways of cracking encryption are continually being invented.
