• How to create wifihotspot in ubuntu 10.04 LTS

  I am using ubuntu 10.04 LTS in my lenovo laptop and have a android ICS device. I want to create a wifi-hotspot in ubuntu, which I can later use for connecting android device. I need this setup for capturing the packets from android device and later analysing them using wireshark in my ubuntu. I tried to create a new hotspot using "Create a new wireless Network" wizard from network manager applet, but for some reason the following happens. It breaks the existing internet connection(either the WLAN, or ethernet) Its not visible in the list of available WIFI hotspots in the android device. • [metasploit] Has anyone gotten multi/browser/java_signed_applet to work?

  Welcome, Today i want test following exploit "exploit/multi/browser/java_signed_applet" on my Ubuntu 10.04 desktop using Metasploit framework. I'm following that guide: http://pauldotcom.com/wiki/index.php/Episode185 When im trying to start exploit, i got error: JVM not initialized. You must install the Java Development Kit, the rjb ruby gem, and set the $JAVA_HOME variable. [-] Falling back to static signed applet. This exploit will still work, but the CERTCN and APPLETNAME variables will be ignored. I have installed sun-java6-jdk, and gem install rjb And patch to JAVA look working because: ls $JAVA_HOME bin ext jre LICENSE README.html COPYRIGHT include lib man THIRDPARTYLICENSEREADME.txt If anyone, have any idea... Except installation of backtrack what is not possible... Because i need use it on my Ubuntu, (have to virtualize XP for test) regards

• 7u45 Caller-Allowable-Codebase and Trusted-Library

  Java 7 update 45 (October 2013) changed the interactions between JavaScript and Java Applets made through LiveConnect. The 7u45 update is a critical patch update that has also raised the security baseline and users are strongly recommended to upgrade. Versions below the security baseline used to apply the Trusted-Library Manifest attribute to call between sandboxed code and higher-privileged code. The Trusted-Library value was a Boolean true or false. Security changes for the current security baseline (7u45) introduced a different Caller-Allowable-Codebase that indicates precisely where these LiveConnect calls can originate. For example, LiveConnect calls should not necessarily originate from 3rd party components of a web page or other DOM-based browser manipulations (pdf). Additional information about these can be located at “JAR File Manifest Attributes for Security.” The workaround for end-user dialogs is described on the 7u45 release notes, which explains removing the Trusted-Library attribute for LiveConnect calls in favor of Caller-Allowable-Codebase. This provides necessary protections (without warnings) for all users at or above the security baseline. Client installations automatically detect updates to the secure baseline and prompt users to upgrade. Warning dialogs above or below Both of these attributes should work together to support the various versions of client installations. We are aware of the issue that modifying the Manifest to use the newer Caller-Allowable-Codebase causes warnings for users below the security baseline and that not doing it displays a warning for users above. Manifest Attribute 7u45 7u40 and below Only Caller-Allowable-Codebase No dialog Displays prompt Only Trusted-Library Displays prompt No dialog Both Displays prompt (*) No dialog This will be fixed in a future release so that both attributes can co-exist. The current work-around would be to favor using Caller-Allowable-Codebase over the old Trusted-Library call. For users who need to stay below the security baseline System Administrators that schedule software deployments across managed computers may consider applying a Deployment Rule Set as described in Option 1 of “What to do if your applet is blocked or warns of mixed code.” System Administrators may also sign up for email notifications of Critical Patch Updates.

• Swap, Swapiness and Standby: swapping starts when waking up

  I'm running running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Lenovo W500 (Core2Duo T9400, 4GB Ram) Current kernel: 3.2.0-32-generic #51-Ubuntu SMP Wed Sep 26 21:33:09 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux -- but the problems exists since a couple of months, surviving quite a few software (includig kernel) updates I regularly put my machine into suspend-to-ram (S3) and when the machine comes back up Ubuntu starts to swap out processes. I was able to observe that the used swap-space starts to grow right after the box returns. See munin graphs below, the gap (obviously) shows the timeframe in STR. Needless to say that the box becomes unusable while swapping, load goes up beyond 10. What I've done so far: lowered swappiness from default (60) to 10 (via /etc/sysctl.conf: vm.swappiness=10) -- this has improved the situation much, but sometimes the problem comes back, I have not found a trigger (like memory usage) for this for now lowered swappiness to 5 -- perhaps this has brought an improvement again Before going to STR the box ran stable without (swapping) problems for hours. Today when the issue showed up again I used this script (- http://stackoverflow.com/questions/479953/how-to-find-out-which-processes-are-swapping-in-linux) to find what processes have the most used swap space. • Should I be using Lua for game logic on mobile devices?

  As above really, I'm writing an android based game in my spare time (android because it's free and I've no real aspirations to do anything commercial). The game logic comes from a very typical component based model whereby entities exist and have components attached to them and messages are sent to and fro in order to make things happen. Obviously the layer for actually performing that is thin, and if I were to write an iPhone version of this app, I'd have to re-write the renderer and core driver (of this component based system) in Objective C. The entities are just flat files determining the names of the components to be added, and the components themselves are simple, single-purpose objects containing the logic for the entity. Now, if I write all the logic for those components in Java, then I'd have to re-write them on Objective C if I decided to do an iPhone port. As the bulk of the application logic is contained within these components, they would, in an ideal world, be written in some platform-agnostic language/script/DSL which could then just be loaded into the app on whatever platform. I've been led to believe however that this is not an ideal world though, and that Lua performance etc on mobile devices still isn't up to scratch, that the overhead is too much and that I'd run into troubles later if I went down that route? Is this actually the case? Obviously this is just a hypothetical question, I'm happy writing them all in Java as it's simple and easy get things off the ground, but say I actually enjoy making this game (unlikely, given how much I'm currently disliking having to deal with all those different mobile devices) and I wanted to make a commercially viable game - would I use Lua or would I just take the hit when it came to porting and just re-write all the code?

• Windows Azure Recipe: High Performance Computing

  One of the most attractive ways to use a cloud platform is for parallel processing. Commonly known as high-performance computing (HPC), this approach relies on executing code on many machines at the same time. On Windows Azure, this means running many role instances simultaneously, all working in parallel to solve some problem. Doing this requires some way to schedule applications, which means distributing their work across these instances. To allow this, Windows Azure provides the HPC Scheduler. This service can work with HPC applications built to use the industry-standard Message Passing Interface (MPI). Software that does finite element analysis, such as car crash simulations, is one example of this type of application, and there are many others. The HPC Scheduler can also be used with so-called embarrassingly parallel applications, such as Monte Carlo simulations. Whatever problem is addressed, the value this component provides is the same: It handles the complex problem of scheduling parallel computing work across many Windows Azure worker role instances. Drivers Elastic compute and storage resources Cost avoidance Solution Here’s a sketch of a solution using our Windows Azure HPC SDK: Ingredients Web Role – this hosts a HPC scheduler web portal to allow web based job submission and management. It also exposes an HTTP web service API to allow other tools (including Visual Studio) to post jobs as well. Worker Role – typically multiple worker roles are enlisted, including at least one head node that schedules jobs to be run among the remaining compute nodes. Database – stores state information about the job queue and resource configuration for the solution. Blobs, Tables, Queues, Caching (optional) – many parallel algorithms persist intermediate and/or permanent data as a result of their processing. These fast, highly reliable, parallelizable storage options are all available to all the jobs being processed. It seems that my connection with my wireless network keeps going in and out. The UI still provided the user the ability to cancel the currently running operation but no other work could be done until the operation completed. Some operations were performed in the background (resource decoration and JDT file indexing are two such examples) but these operations were restricted in the sense that they could not modify the workspace. If a background operation did try to modify the workspace, the UI thread would be blocked if the user explicitly performed an operation that modified the workspace and, even worse, the user would not be able to cancel the operation. A further complication with concurrency was that the interaction between the independent locking mechanisms of different plug-ins often resulted in deadlock situations. Because of the independent nature of the locks, there was no way for Eclipse to recover from the deadlock, which forced users to kill the application... ...The functionality provided by the workspace locking mechanism can be broken down into the following three aspects: Resource locking to ensure multiple operations did not concurrently modify the same resource Resource change batching to ensure UI stability during an operation Identification of an appropriate time to perform incremental building With the introduction of the Jobs API, these areas have been divided into separate mechanisms and a few additional facilities have been added. The following list summarizes the facilities added. Job class: support for performing operations or other work in the background. I use ubuntu, with apache and mysql installed. I found many web based interfaces and tutorials how to manually create virtual hosts but I want an automated self made solution. Can anyone help me?   WARNING Retrying Bulk Insert for file:sqlldr due to Communication Error:256 I am running my engine on Linux and am receiving an intermittent message "WARNING Retrying bulk insert for file: sqlldr due to communication Error: 256" The engine seems to have completed successfully, but it is not clear if this error caused some of the forecast to not complete. It is also not clear what caused the error. Generally if you see only the WARNING of it, it means that next retries of the same load request have eventually succeeded and so the run a a whole is not affected. In order to know more about what happens, look for .log/.bad files left in the engines bin directory or possibly a quote of them within the specific engine log that had the issue.  The sqlnet.log file may also have some information about it and perhaps at the database server side there may be some log/alert regarding what happened.  Look at the alert.log. In general it could be that the database server/network was over loaded at the time and somehow the connection was rejected/failed/aborted either due to specific setting on concurrent connections/sessions or inadvertently due to glitch in network/os/hardware. If this repeats and becomes more frequent during the run you should look further into it as mentioned above. You can also track this using either SQL*Trace or java.util.logging.  - Globally enable logging by setting the oracle.jdbc.Trace system property java -Doracle.jdbc.Trace=true - Client Side Tracing: Your SQLNET.ORA file should contain the following lines to produce a client side trace file: trace_level_client = 10 trace_unique_client = on trace_file_client = sqlnet.trc trace_directory_client = <path_to_trace_dir> Server Side Tracing: To enable server side tracing, use the following parameters: trace_level_server = 10 trace_file_server = server.trc trace_directory_server = <path_to_trace_dir> Tracing Levels: The following values can be used for TRACE_LEVEL* parameters:     16 or SUPPORT — WorldWide Customer Support trace information     10 or ADMIN — Administration trace information     4 or USER — User trace information     0 or OFF — no tracing, the default Additional information is readily available via the web.

• WebSocket@QCon NY

  QCon NY was held on June 10-14 at the New York Marriott/Brooklyn Bridge. Part of the QCon franchise, this is one of the most significant IT conferences in the greater NYC area. It was an honor to do a WebSocket (JSR 356) talk at the conference. Unfortunately, my schedule was such that I could only attend one day of the conference and did not really get a chance to attend many sessions or do much networking. I did get a chance to talk to fellow Oracle speakers Doug Clarke, Stephen Chin and Frederic Desbiens, which was great. My session, titled Building Java HTML5/WebSocket Applications with JSR 356 was very well attended and I had some excellent Q & A. The talk introduces HTML 5 WebSocket, overviews JSR 356, tours the API and ends with a small WebSocket demo on GlassFish 4. The slide deck for the talk is posted below. Oracle hosted a reception in the evening which was very well attended. • SteelSeries & JavaFX External Control via Tinkerforge

  The first photo shows me controling a JavaFX chart by rotating a Tinkerforge device, while the other two are of me using code by Christian Pohl from Nordhorn, Germany, to show components from Gerrit Grunwald's SteelSeries library being externally controled by Tinkerforge devices: What these examples show is that you can have a robot (i.e., an external device), of some kind, that can produce output that can be visualized via JavaFX charts and SteelSeries components. For example, imagine a robot that moves around while collecting data on the current temperature throughout a building. That's possible because a temperature device is part of Tinkerforge, just like the rotating device and distance device shown in the photos above. The temperature data collected by the robot would be displayed in various ways on a computer via, for example, JavaFX charts and SteelSeries components. From there, reports could be produced and adjustments could be made to the robot while it continues moving around collecting temperature data. The fact that Tinkerforge has Wifi support makes a scenario such as described here completely possible to implement. And all of this can be programmed in Java, without very much work, since the Java bindings for Tinkerforge are simple to use, such as shown in yesterday's blog entry.

Have I understood this right? Livepatching KSplice-style is coming to Solaris 11 too?We're looking at that for certain types of Solaris patches in the future.Will there be a security framework like SST/JASS for Solaris 11?We can't talk about the future projects on a public forum, but we recognize the need for SST/JASS and want to address this as soon as possible. On the other side there are a whole bunch of "best practices" that are now embedded into Solaris 11 by default, so out of the box Solaris 11 should already address part of what SST/JASS gave you. (For example we did a lot of work on improving the auditing performance so that we can now have it turned on by default). On x86 can install VirtualBox in a Zone and use that to host other OSes.Yes, this was one of the first things we made sure would work when we acquired VirtualBox when we were still Sun Microsystems. If I have a Solaris 11 Control Domain on a T-series, can I run a Solaris 10 Ldom with Solaris 8 branded containers?Yes, you can.Is Oracle Solaris free or do we need to purchase?Solaris is free, the entitlement to run it comes either with a Sun system (new or historical) or for 3rd party systems the entitlement comes with a support contract. Note that for production use you will be expected to get a support contract. If you don't want to use the Solaris system (Sun or 3rd party) for production use (i.e. development) you can get an OTN license on the Oracle Technical Network website. Will encryption and deduplication both work on a share?This should work at the same time. What approaches does Solaris use to monitor usage?There are many different tools in Solaris to monitor usage. The main ones are the "stats" (vmstat, mpstat, prstat, ...), the kstat interface, and DTrace (to get details you couldn't see before). And then there are layered tools that can interface with these tools (Ops Center, BMC, CA, Tivoli, ...) Apart little-endian, big-endian how is it easy to port Solaris applications on Sparc to x86 and vice-versa ?Very easy. Except for certain hardware specific applications (those that utilize hardware specific drivers), all of the same Oracle Solaris APIs exist for all architectures. Is IPS based patching aware of the fact that zones can reside on ZFS and move from one physical server to another ?IPS is definitely aware of zones and uses ZFS to support boot environments for non-global zones in the same way that's used for the global zone. With respect to moving a zone from one physical server to another, Solaris 11 supports to the same zone attach/deattach method that was introduced in Solaris 10. Is vnic support in Ldoms planned?This is currently being investigated for a future LDOM release. Is it possible with the new patching system to build a system later with the same patch level as a system built a few months earlier?Yes, you can choose/define exactly which version should go to the system and it will always put the same bits in place. The technical answer is that you choose the version of the "entire" package you want on the system and the rest flows from there. Is it in the plans to allow zones to add/remove zpools to running zones dynamically in future updates?Work in this area is currently under investigation. Any plans to realese Solaris 11 source code? i.e. opensolaris?We currently can't comment on publicly releasing the source code. If you need/want this access please let your Oracle account team know. What about VirtualBox and Solaris11 for virtualization?Solaris 11 works great with VirtualBox, as both a client and a host system. Will Oracle DB software eventually be supplied as IPS packages? When?We don't have a date yet but this is actively being worked on. What are the new artifacts in Oracle Solaris 11 than the previous versions?There are quite a few actually. The best start is to look at our "Evaluate Solaris 11" page, and there you also can find a Transition Guide. http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solaris11/overview/evaluate-1530234.html So, this seems just like RedHat's YUM environment?IPS offers certain features beyond those in YUM or other packaging systems. For example, IPS works with ZFS and Solaris Boot Environments to provide a safe environment for software lifecycle management so that changes can be reverted by switching to an older boot environment. With Zones on solaris 11, can I do paravirtualitation?The great thing about zones is you don't *need* paravirtualization. You're making the same direct kernel calls that you would outside of a zone.  It's an incredibly significant performance win over hypervisor-based virtualization. Are zones/containers officially supported to run Oracle Databases?  EBIZ?Hi Calvin, the answer is yes, here is the support matrix for DB:  http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/virtualizationmatrix-172995.html I've found some nasty bugs in Solaris 11 (one of which today) that have been fixed in community forks (i.e., Illumos). Will Oracle ever restart collaboration with the community?We continue to work with the community, just not as open on all projects as we did before (For example IPS is an open project) and the source of more than half of the Solaris packages is posted on our opensource websites. I can't comment on what we will do in the future. And with regards to bugs please file them through the support organization and we will get them resolved. Is zpool vdev removal on-the fly now possible ?This issue is actively being investigated although we don't have a date for when this feature will be available. They use Solaris Cluster to do this. What about VMware vMotion like feature?We have secure live migration with both Logical Domains on SPARC T series systems, and with Oracle VM on x86 systems. When running Solaris 10/11 on an enterprise server with a lot of zones, what are best practises commands to show the system is running fine? (has enough hardware resources). For example CPU / Memory / I/O / system load. What are the recommended values?For Solaris 11, look into the new zonestat(1M) command that provides a great deal of information about zone utilization. In addition, there is new work underway in providing additional observability in areas such as per-zone file system I/O. Java optimizations done with Solaris 11? For X86 platforms too? • Can not connect to wireless on 12.04 with Intel WiFi Link 5100

  I am having problem in connecting to wifi. I have dual boot (Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04) on my Dell Studio 15. I upgraded to 12.04 quite some time ago (at least one month) from 11.10. Everything was working fine till yesterday. Since yesterday I can see the list of available Wifi connection but does not connect to any or if connects (after hours of trying) then disconnects after few minutes. My wifi interface is Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN. However the problem is on both Windows and Ubuntu.
