• VB.NET textbox changed but still hold initial value

  Hi Folks, I've never come across this before: I have a series of text boxes. The text of these boxes get set on page load. then I have a submit button that calls a sub to update the table with the new values (text) in the text box. The problem is it is keeping the original text not the text that is CURRENTLY in the textbox. Anyone come across this before? Or know how to get round it? Cheers, Jonesy

• Can I have two separate projects, 1 WebForms and 1 ASP.NET MVC, to both point to the same domain?

  Is it possible to setup two separate projects, 1 WebForms and 1 ASP.NET MVC, to both point to the same domain? i.e. both point to different pages within www.somesite.com. Here's some background on the application and why I'm asking. This is a brownfield application that is currently 2.0 WebForms and is full of WebFormy 'goodness' (i.e. ObjectDataSources, FormView controls, UpdatePanels, etc...) There are lost of other 'fun' things in the code base like 600+ Stored Procedures and 200+ line methods in the business layer code that get data from the DB via stored proc, do some processing on the data, build an HTML string using string concatenation and then return that string to the UI layer. What we are planning on doing is developing new features in MVC and slowly converting the existing features over to MVC one at a time. As part of this transition, we will also be re-writing the layers below the UI to clean up the mess there and to do things like replace the stored procedures with NHibernate and introduce an IOC container. I know that you can run WebForms and MVC side-by-side in the same project, however, because we will be making wholesale changes to the way we do many things throughout our entire development stack, I'd like the new stuff to be a completely separate project within the solution. This should help serve as very visual reminder that this is a different way of doing things than before and make it easier to remove the old code as it is no longer needed. What I don't know is, is this even possible? Can two separate project point to the same domain? • .Net System.Mail.Message adding multiple "To" addresses

  I just hit something I think is inconsistent, and wanted to see if I'm doing something wrong, if I'm an idiot, or... MailMessage msg = new MailMessage(); msg.To.Add("[email protected]"); msg.To.Add("[email protected]"); msg.To.Add("[email protected]"); msg.To.Add("[email protected]"); Really only sends this email to 1 person, the last one. To add multiples I have to do this: msg.To.Add("[email protected],[email protected],[email protected],[email protected]"); I don't get it. I thought I was adding multiple people to the "To" address collection, but what I was doing was replacing it. I think I just realized my error -- to add one item to the collection, use .To.Add(new MailAddress("[email protected]")) If you use just a string, it replaces everything it had in its list. Ugh. I'd consider this a rather large gotcha! Since I answered my own question, but I think this is of value to have in the stackoverflow archive, I'll still ask it. Maybe someone even has an idea of other traps that you can fall into.

• ASP.NET MVC jQuery autocomplete with url.action helper in a script included in a page.

  I have been building my first ASP.NET MVC web app. I have been using the jQuery autocomplete widget in a number of places like this: <head> $("#model").autocomplete({ source: '<%= Url.Action("Model", "AutoComplete") %>' }); </head> The thing is I have this jQuery code in a number of different places through my web app. So i thought I would create a seperate javascript script (script.js) where I could put this code and then just include it in the master page. Then i can put all these repeated pieces of code in that script and just call them where I need too. So I did this. My code is shown below: In the site.js script I put this function: function doAutoComplete() { $("#model").autocomplete({ source: '<%= Url.Action("Model", "AutoComplete") %>' }); } On the page I have: <head> <script src="../../Scripts/site.js" type="text/javascript"></script> doAutoComplete(); </head> But when I do this I get an Invalid Argument exception and the autocomplete doesnt work. What am I doing wrong? Any ideas?Do i need to pass something to the doAutoComplete function?

Looking for an RSS feed generator usuable in .NET framework 2.0. • Preserve data in .net mvc

  I am implementing a search module with result page support paging. The example provided by NerdDinner passes pagenumber as a parameter for the Index action, and the action uses the pagenumber to perform a query each time the user hit a different page number. My problem is that my search take many more criteria such as price, material, model number etc. than just simple pagenumber. Therefore, I would like to preserve the criteria after users' first submission, so that I only have to pass the pagenumber back and forth. Using ViewData is not possible because ViewData get cleared once it is sent to the View. Is there any good way to preserve the criteria data as I wish?

• DroDownlist in DataGrid produces Error

  I have a DataGrid and everytime I change value of it's embeded dropdwonlist I get: "System.Web.HttpException: The IListSource does not contain any data sources." I have a data grid which loads fine: Name column is editable. I have a dropdownlist these : DataDataGrid gets its value from a table. (Select Name, Address From Persons) Dropdown list also gets list of names from the same table. So DataGrid and dropdownlist are bound to 2 different datasets. • ASP.NET and Winforms: What PDF reporting tools are out there and recommended?

  I have ActiveReports for .Net which is a great tool, however the version I have is not going to support Visual Studio 2010. Active Reports quite pricey, so just wondering if there are any better alternatives out there at a competitive price or even open source, before I consider upgrading. I am looking for a reporting tool specifically, that has a designer and is programmable etc, not looking for something that can just produce PDF, eg iTextSharp etc. Output will primarily be PDF for web and windows applications. Using various databases, SQL Server, SQL Server Express, Azure and SQLite, so not sure SQL Server reporting services will work for all these cases. All coments appreciated.

• Asp MVC - "The Id field is required" validation message on Create; Id not set to [Required]

  This is happening when I try to create the entity using a Create style action in Asp.Net MVC 2. The POCO has the following properties: public int Id {get;set;} [Required] public string Message {get; set} On the creation of the entity, the Id is set automatically, so there is no need for it on the Create action. The ModelState says that "The Id field is required", but I haven't set that to be so. Is there something automatic going on here? EDIT - Reason Revealed The reason for the issue is answered by Brad Wilson via Paul Speranza in one of the comments below where he says (cheers Paul): You're providing a value for ID, you just didn't know you were. It's in the route data of the default route ("{controller}/{action}/{id}"), and its default value is the empty string, which isn't valid for an int. Use the [Bind] attribute on your action parameter to exclude ID.   I've got a website that has windows authentication enable on it. From a page in the website, the users have the ability to start a service that does some stuff with the database. It works fine for me to start the service because I'm a local admin on the server. But I just had a user test it and they can't get the service started. My question is: Does anyone know of a way to get a list of services on a specified computer by name using a different windows account than the one they are currently logged in with? I really don't want to add all the users that need to start the service into a windows group and set them all to a local admin on my IIS server..... • asp.net 4.0 webforms - how to keep ContentPlaceHolder1_ out of client id's in a simple way?

  I'm attempting to introduce master pages to an existing webforms site that's avoided using them because of client id mangling in the past (and me not wanting to deal with the mangling and doing <% foo.ClientID % everywhere :) GOAL: use 'static' id values (whatever is in the server control's id attribute) except for data-bound / repeating controls which would break for those cases and therefore need suffixes or whatever to differentiate (basically, Predictable) Now that the site migrated to ASP.NET 4.0, I first attempted to use ClientIDMode of Static (in the web.config) but that broke too many places doing repeating controls (checkboxes inside gridviews, for instance) since they all resulted with the same id. So, I then tried Predictable (again, just in the web.config) so that the repeating controls wouldn't have conflicting id's, and it works well except that the master page content placeholder (which is indeed a naming container) is still reflecting in the resulting client id's (for instance, ContentPlaceHolder1_someCheckbox). Certainly I could leave the web.config setting as static and then go through all the databound/repeating controls switch them to Predictable, but I'm hoping there's some easier/simpler way to get that effect without having to scatter ClientIDMode attributes in those N number of places (or extend all those databound controls with my own usercontrol that just sets clientidmode, or whatever). I even thought of leaving web.config set to static and doing a master or basepage handler (preinit? not sure if that would work or not) that would go walk Controls with OfType<INamingContainer() (might be a better choice on the type, but that seems like a good starting choice looking at repeater and gridview) and then set those to Predictable so I'd get static for all my 'normal' things outside of repeating controls but not have to deal with static inside things like gridview/repeater/etc. I don't see any way to mark the content placeholder such that it 'opts out' of being included in child id's - setting the ID of the placeholder to empty/blank doesn't work as it's a required attribute :) At that point I figured there was a better/simpler way that I was missing and decided to ask on SO :) Edit: I thought about changing all my 'fetch by id' jquery calls from $('#foo') to fetch_by_id('foo') and then having that function return the 'right one' by checking $('#foo').length and then $('#ContentPlaceHolder1_foo').length (and maybe other patterns) or even just have it return $('#foo, #ContentPlaceHolder1_foo') (again, potentially other patterns) but changing all the places I fetch elements by id seemed pretty ugly too, and I'd like to avoid that abstraction layer if possible to do so easily :)

• Using ASP.NET SQL Membership Provider, how do I store my own per-user data?

  I'm using the ASP.NET SQL Membership Provider. So, there's an aspnet_Users table that has details of each of my users. (Actually, the aspnet_Membership table seems to contain most of the actual data). I now want to store some per-user information in my database, so I thought I'd just create a new table with a UserId (GUID) column and an FK relationship to aspnet_Users. However, I then discovered that I can't easily get access to the UserId since it's not exposed via the membership API. (I know I can access it via the ProviderUserKey, but it seems like the API is abstracting away the internal UserID in favor of the UserName, and I don't want to go too far against the grain). So, I thought I should instead put a LoweredUserName column in my table, and create an FK relationship to aspnet_Users using that. Bzzzt. Wrong again, because while there is a unique index in aspnet_Users that includes the LoweredUserName, it also includes the ApplicationId - so in order to create my FK relationship, I'd need to have an ApplicationId column in my table too. At first I thought: fine, I'm only dealing with a single application, so I'll just add such a column and give it a default value. Then I realised that the ApplicationId is a GUID, so it'd be a pain to do this. Not hard exactly, but until I roll out my DB I can't predict what the GUID is going to be. I feel like I'm missing something, or going about things the wrong way. What am I supposed to do?

• Global Import Aliasing in .NET

  Using import aliasing in a single class, we can reference class library namespaces by assigning our own custom alias like this: Imports Db = Company.Lib.Data.Objects And then we are able to reference the classes inside of Company.Lib.Data.Objects by using the Db alias that we assigned. Is it possible to do this at the global level so that the alias is applied to the entire solution instead of the given file? Currently, we are working with web applications, so I was hoping we could add something to web.config, but I am also interested in whether or not this is possible with windows forms, console apps, and/or class libraries.

• Create a real time web application using .net framework and azure - very confused

  Let us say I would like a simple (yet complex) web application where there is continuous READING AND WRITING to the sql azure database. Let us say I am tracking a location, and I would like it to be updated very frequently (lets take the worst case: 1 second). From the little knowledge I have, I think that this involves the use of the database to continuously write the location to the database, and continuously read from the database to update another person through a website. Do you please have any suggestion which technologies can I use? Is there a simple way? I heard about node.js, signalR. I have no idea how to use them, if they are really what I need. the last tutorial I checked out simply uses a while(true) loop..but I don't think that that's something good to keep a thread continuously busy... Do I have to create some background task? Do I have to create some web service? This is a school project and I wish not to go for the most difficult option, but if there is some sort of solution, challenge accepted :) Can you please help me? Since I have asked many questions here and yet I have no solution in mind

• How would you organize this in asp.net mvc?

  I have an asp.net mvc 2.0 application that contains Areas/Modules like calendar, admin, etc... There may be cases where more than one area needs to access the same Repo, so I am not sure where to put the Data Access Layers and Repositories. First Option: Should I create Data Access Layer files (Linq to SQL in my case) with their accompanying Repositories for each area, so each area only contains the Tables, and Repositories needed by those areas. The benefit is that everything needed to run that module is one place, so it is more encapsulated (in my mind anyway). The downside is that I may have duplicate queries, because other modules may use the same query. Second Option Or, would it be better to place the DAL and Repositories outside the Area's and treat them as Global? The advantage is I won't have any duplicate queries, but I may be loading a lot of unnecessary queries and DAL tables up for certain modules. It is also more work to reuse or modify these modules for future projects (though the chance of reusing them is slim to none :)) Which option makes more sense? If someone has a better way I'd love to hear it. Thanks!

• What setup in .Net would most resemble Django

  At work we are inte process of starting development on a new web-based product. Before doing so we need to establish what technology stack we are going to use. For this application my preference would have been to use Django but since the development- and management-team is soo heavily rooted with Microsoft the new product will have to be based on Microsoft technologies. • Total Number of records required in paged .NET datagrid control

  I am using a data grid and has bound a data source with it. I am trying to get the total number of records in the grid in overriden InitializePager method from pagedDataSource DataSourceCount. I thought DataSourceCount returns number of records from SelectCountMethod of ObjectDataSource, but DataSourceCount is giving me the page size and not the total number of records, whereas when I debug and see in SelectCountMethod it is returning correct number of total Records. I am not sure how to get the data from SelectCountMethod in DataGrid.
