Windows 7 and Ubuntu Boot/Corruption Problems

I searched around, but I couldn't find the answer to why Windows 7 Ultimate 64x and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64x could'nt live together happily on my Asus G1s-X1 laptop. I had Windows 7 Ultimate 64x installed on the laptop when I bought it (bought it used, it comes with Vista new) and I wanted to try out Ubuntu and see what all the hype about the free OS was. I installed Ubuntu on an external 80GB iomega HDD with Windows 7 on my main drive. They both work fine for about 2-3 weeks, until Ubuntu suddenly is unable to boot. A few days after Ubuntu fails, Windows corrupts majorly (winload.exe, ntkrnlpa.exe, and various others corrupt randomly) and Windows Recovery Environment is completely useless. Booting to a live USB with Ubuntu and trying to reinstall it fails, and trying to wipe the main drive and install it there fails as well (something about my graphics card.) I managed to get Windows 7 Ultimate 64x back up and running (after many disk formats) but now I am left with a broken (and invisible) Ubuntu installation on the external drive. Is there any way to get the broken and non-bootable Ubuntu installation off the HDD without damaging or erasing the many files and programs installed and stored on the 80GB drive?

How to distinguish doc, ppt, xls files, without looking at file extension

So I was wondering how would you differentiate ppt, xls and doc files from each other in linux regardless of extensions. I tried 'file' but from the looks of it, all of MSOffice files are categorized under the same file type. Similarly I'm having trouble with docx, xlsx and pptx files, since they're essentially all zip files containing a bunch of xml. I also tried a python script importing the magic module, but no go. I'm trying to identify the actual file for a sandbox analysis. And for this specific purpose I need to find the actual file type in order to run it in the sandbox vm (the Windows vm runs everything by extension). Let's say my sample file is labeled as try.exe, but in reality it's just a doc file. My script will rename it as try.exe.doc, which would work fine for doc files. But since linux identifies all MSOffice files as simple DOC files then there's no way to identify ppt or xls files. As a result the sandbox wont' analyze the sample correctly.

Incompleted ubuntu 12.04 install dual-boot xp

This weekend has been the 1st time i've tried to install ubuntu. On the initial install, (I am using a USB) the installation went all the way through and asked to restart when completed. I was not able to get grub to boot and kept going through windows. After some research I found some articles on updating/reinstalling grub, so I followed those. I finally got grub to load after a day but there was no windows option only the Ubuntu 12.04 which when I selected it only gave me a fatal error 17. I booted from the usb again and deleted the partitions and installed again. This time I got an error 15. I then booted through xp and downloaded the WUBI.exe and uninstalled ubuntu and reinstalled again. The installation went to the very end and then gave an error message (which I don't remember exactly what it said) something along the lines of checking my logs on my C drive. I then uninstalled ubuntu and removed the wubi.exe file and wiped my usb and did the download to the usb again. Booted through usb and ran the install process again. It again went through the install process but after creating username and password and hitting continue the installation dialogue box disappears and the mouse spinning wheel is displayed but I do not receive the prompt to restart. I can still access the side menu for ubuntu but the wheel keeps spinning. How to I get Ubuntu to install properly

Installing Visual Studio 2010 SP1 or Windows Phone tools in your VM (danger!)

If you've read my blog for any amount of time, you probably know that I tend to develop stuff in a Parallels VM on a Mac. It's how I roll. I like VM's because I can trash them and do really stupid things with beta software. That said, there is a pain point that doesn't seem that well documented when it comes to installing stuff in this scenario.The WP7 tools, and SP1 for Visual Studio 2010 (perhaps only if you already have the WP7 tools installed, I'm not sure), do something strange on install. As if it weren't already a long and slow installation, for reasons I don't understand, the installer fires up an instance of Windows Phone Emulator. As you may already know, the emulator doesn't run in a VM, because it is itself a VM, apparently. What it will do is fire up your CPU, make your comprooder hot and make the fans blow harder.I found this out accidentally, as I started the (slow) phone tool installation once, and walked away. An hour and a half later, I came back to find it hadn't finished. But it was hot and the CPU was pegged, so I fired up the task manager to find XDE.exe, the phone emulator, cranking away. I had to kill it several times, and eventually the install finished. It fired up just once in the SP1 install, but it still had the same hanging effect.I can't for the life of me figure out why it does this. In a VM, I can connect the phone to it and use that, so I don't need the emulator. But this install, firing up the emulator, will make it choke until you kill the XDE.exe process. Watch out!

How to properly uninstall/reinstall Ubuntu One on Windows XP?

I had previously installed an Ubuntu One client as a test on a Windows XP machine. Now I wanted to change the account for the client to a production one but had problems changing the email address so decided to do a reinstall. Ran uninstall. Downloaded ubuntuone-3.0.2-windows-installer.exe. It downloads, goes through the unpacking/install – strangely some of the messages say updating as if it was replacing something that was already there. I do not get the setup/signin screen. There is no ubuntu% processes running. The Program files/ubuntuone directory exists with data and dist folders. The U icon is on the desktop – pointing at ubuntuone/dist/ubuntuone-control-panel-qt.exe but this does not run. Ran uninstall again, deleted Program files/ubuntuone directory, removed any ubuntu entries for registry, rebooted. Downloaded install again - exactly the same as above. How can I uninstall Ubuntu One to get a clean reinstall? Or force the install to continue after downloading/unpacking?

No wubildr, No spaceleft, Boot Error and A previous installation was detected in D:\ubuntu. Please uninstall that before continuing

At first I was downloading Ubuntu 12.10 using Windows Installer, but I cancelled it after just 2-3 minutes and dowloaded 32-Bit ISO (ubuntu-12.10-desktop-i386). Then I created bootable USB Stick (new HP 210 v210 w) using Pendrivelinux (Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.1.4). I Formatted D Drive. (Both by Windows & EaseUS) I've set boot priority correctly. But after getting message "Boot Error", I ran wubi.exe directly from USB drive. Now the message is "A previous installation was detected in D:\ubuntu. Please uninstall that before continuing." I formatted D: again and performed disk check, surface test using EaseUS. It shows no error or bad sectors. Formatted & checked my pendrive too. Directly ran .iso. But same error keeps coming. I found way around above problems, by copying extracted .iso on D:\ and installing Ubuntu using wubi.exe and though on boot it was shown with Windows 7, selecting it caused following error Try hd(0,0): NTFS5 : No wubildr Try hd(0,1): NTFS5 : So, I uninstalled it and Reeinstalled it Now installation fails at around 7mins saying " An error occurred. No space left on device. For more info please see log file " My D: is a 9 GB partition. (99% Free) Ubuntu Site 12.10 says it needs around 4.5 GB. Now Trying it by extendin D: to 10 GB... Got No wubildr. Please help. tdc2bdc

Visual Studio compiles WPF application twice during build

I have a WPF app in VS2008 that compiles twice during the build. The two CSC command lines are similar but with some differences. The first CSC command line does not have an /resource options, the second has two /resource options on the command line. What is the reason of "Transaction context in use by another session"

Hi, I'm looking for a description of the root of this error: "Transaction context in use by another session". I get it sometimes in one of my unittests so I can't provider repro code. But I wonder what is "by design" reason for the error. " means. All words are understandable but not the point. I actually can share a system transaction between threads. And there is even special mechanism for this - DependentTransaction class and Transaction.DependentClone method. I'm trying to reproduce a usecase from the first post: 1. SqlBulkCopy is slow, doesn't utilize full network speed

Hi, for that past couple of weeks I have been creating generic script that is able to copy databases. The goal is to be able to specify any database on some server and copy it to some other location, and it should only copy the specified content. The exact content to be copied over is specified in a configuration file. This script is going to be used on some 10 different databases and run weekly. And in the end we are copying only about 3%-20% of databases which are as large as 500GB. I have been using the SMO assemblies to achieve this. This is my first time working with SMO and it took a while to create generic way to copy the schema objects, filegroups ...etc. (Actually helped find some bad stored procs). Overall I have a working script which is lacking on performance (and at times times out) and was hoping you guys would be able to help. When executing the WriteToServer command to copy large amount of data ( 6GB) it reaches my timeout period of 1hr. Here is the core code for copying table data. The network utilization never went over 1% which was quite surprising to me. But when I just transfer some large files between the servers, the network utilization spikes up to 10%. I have tried setting the $bulkData.BatchSize to 5000 but nothing really changed. Increasing the BulkCopyTimeout to an even greater amount would only solve the timeout. I really would like to know why the network is not being used fully. Anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions on networking or bulk copy will be appreciated. And please let me know if you need more information. Thanks. UPDATE I have tweaked several options that increase the performance of SqlBulkCopy, such as setting the transaction logging to simple and providing a table lock to SqlBulkCopy instead of the default row lock. Also some tables are better optimized for certain batch sizes. Overall, the duration of the copy was decreased by some 15%. And what we will do is execute the copy of each database simultaneously on different servers. But I am still having a timeout issue when copying one of the databases. When copying one of the larger databases, there is a table for which I consistently get the following exception: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. It is thrown about 16 after it starts copying the table which is no where near my BulkCopyTimeout. Even though I get the exception that table is fully copied in the end. Also, if I truncate that table and restart my process for that table only, the tables is copied over without any issues. But going through the process of copying that entire database fails always for that one table. I have tried executing the entire process and reseting the connection before copying that faulty table, but it still errored out. My SqlBulkCopy and Reader are closed after each table. Any suggestions as to what else could be causing the script to fail at the point each time?

Clickonce downloading the deploy files via HTTP and not HTTPS

I am working on a project to deploy a project via clickonce. The website where these files are housed will only accept HTTPS traffic and if you attempt to connect via HTTP, our siteminder agent will redirect you to a HTTPS login form. We cannot disable the siteminder agent or enable HTTP for security reasons. I see the request to the application’s manifest file is via HTTPS (This is a good thing). But when the clickonce tries to download the testprint.exe.deploy and the other respective files, it is always via HTTP and the siteminder jumps in and redirects the requests which kills the clickonce install with errors. I have tried to specific an absolute codebase reference in the manifest file, but then I start getting entrypoint errors when the manifest is downloaded by the Clickonce installer. The application is using .NET 3.5 and we have tried building the application and manifest files via VS2008, VS2010 and mage with no success. Does anyone know how to get all of the deploy files to always download via HTTPS?

C# Windows Service XML

Scenario I have a windows service written in C# that performs some processing based on parsing an XML file and use that data to carry out various tasks. The service also does various bits of logging - which uses settings from an APP.Config file. The Problem When the service is compiled, installed and run, the XML file seems to disappear. I'm getting the impression that it is just ignored or something like that. So far I've tried using TWO App.Config files, one named App.Config that contains settings for the service, and the other called MyService.exe.config that contains all of the data that was used in the XML file (the idea being that I can parse the XML from a config file that actually gets compiled and appears in my installation directory. However When I do this, all that happens is that ONE config file appears (with the name MyService.exe.config), but it contains the contents of the App.Config file and not the XML data that I want to parse. What I need All I want is to have a config file for my settings, and an XML file for my data. Question Is this possible? I know the application works as it was originally built as a console application that ran fine. Other The application has to be designed this way (as in, I need my data stored as XML, and my settings stored in a config file). Thoughts If I could somehow combine the contents of the two files into ONE config file, that would be one way of solving the problem. However, I have tried this and of course I get a "Type Initialisation Exception", as the config file cannot interprate the XML data (probably because the tags are custom and do not form any part of the config schema - or something like that). Ideas Please could someone explain to me if it is possible for me to have an XML file AND a config file that will actually be compiled and stored in my installation directory for the service when it is run? How to remove a model object from an EMF model and its GEF Editor via Adapter

This question is principally a follow-up to my question about EMF listening mechanisms. So, I have a third-party EMF model (uneditable) which is based on a generic graph model. The structure is as follows: Project | ItemGraph | Item | Document | DocumentGraph / | \ Tokens Nodes Relations(Edges) I have a GEF editor which works on the DocumentGraph (i.e., not the root object, perhaps this is a problem?): getGraphicalViewer().setContents(documentGraph). THe editor has the following edit part structure: DocumentGraphEP / \ Primary Connection LayerEP LayerEP / \ | TokenEP NodeEP RelationEP PrimaryLayerEP and ConnectionLayerEP both have simple Strings as model, which are not represented in the EMF (domain) model. They are simply used to add a primary (i.e., node) layer, and a connection layer (with ShortestPathConnectionRouter) to the editor. Problem: I am trying to get myself into the workings of EMF adapters, and have tried to make use of the available tutorials, mainly the EMF-GEF Eclipse tutorial, vainolo's blog, and vogella's tutorial. I thought I'd start with an easy thing, so tried to remove a node from the graph and see if I get it to work. Which I didn't, and I don't see where the problem is. I can select a node, and have the generic delete Action in my toolbar, but when I click it, nothing happens. Here is the respective source code for the different responsible parts. Please be so kind to point me to any errors (of thinking, coding errors, whathaveyou) you can find. I have an C# form application that use an access database. This application works perfectly in debug and release. It works on all version of Windows. But it crash on one computer with Windows 7. The message I got is: System.Data.OleDb.OleDbException: No value given for one or more required parameters. EDIT, after some debugging with messagebox on the computer that have the problem, here is the code that bug.The error is catched on the cmd.ExecuteReader(). The messagebox juste before is shown and the next one is the one in the catch with the exception below. Parse filename, insert to SQL

Thanks to Code Poet, I am now working off of this code to parse all .txt files in a directory and store them in a database. I need a bit more help though... The file names are R303717COMP_148A2075_20100520.txt (the middle section is unique per file). I would like to add something to code so that it can parse out the R303717COMP and put that in the left column of the database such as: (this is not the only R number we have) R303717COMP data data data R303717COMP data data data R303717COMP data data data etc Lastly, I would like to have it store each full file name into another table that gets checked so that it doesn't get processed twice.. Since i believe that the problem is on the binary file i guess for that part i should ask for some help. So, can anyone please give me a hand here?
