• Jquery javascript - How can I let users 'undo' their modifications?

  Hi, i have a basic jquery app that allows a user to edit and manipulate some lists on a page. What I would like to do is have a button 'restore original list' that the user can press to undo his modifications. What is the best way to do this? I was thinking of just copying the DOM from the list down, and pasting it in a hidden element someplace else on the page. Is this the best way to do this? I also noticed that jquery has a .data() function which I could use if I converted the data to an array and stored it this way. What are the advantages and disadvantages? Also, I'm open to any suggestions people have if there is some method I haven't thought of. Thanks for your help!

• Any reccomendations for implementing a user-defined workflow in Ruby?

  I'm interested in creating a system where the user can define the steps in a workflow. Is there a gem that already handles this? I thought about one of the state machine gems, but they all seem to be for pre-defined states. I've been thinking maybe i can use state machine for the individual step types... An email step could have a few states [New, Assigned, Done], and the workflow could just be lists of these stateful steps. Are there other solutions out there?

When an Item on a list is selected by single mouse click, i want my preview composite to show the data of the item.   I have managed to write several interpreters including Tokenizing Parsing, including more complicated expressions such as ((x+y)*z)/2 Building bytecode from syntax trees Actual bytecode execution What I didn't manage: Implementation of dictionaries/lists/arrays. I always got stuck with getting multiple values into one variable. My value structure (used for all values passed around, including variables) looks like this, for example: class Value { public: ValueType type; int integerValue; string stringValue; } Works fine with integers and strings, but how could I implement arrays? (From now on with array I mean arrays in my experimental language, not in C++) How can I fit the array concept into the Value class above? Is it possible? How should I make arrays able to be passed around just as you could pass around integers and strings in my language, using the class above? Accessing array elements or memory allocation wouldn't be the problem, I just don't know how to store them.

The functionality I need is simple - selecting from various lists, showing progress bars, etc. No animations, sprites, or other taxing/exotic things. Seems there are quite a few options for Python GUI libraries (Tk, QT, wxPython, Gtk, etc). • How to make pdb recognize that the source has changed between runs?

  From what I can tell, pdb does not recognize when the source code has changed between "runs". That is, if I'm debugging, notice a bug, fix that bug, and rerun the program in pdb (i.e. without exiting pdb), pdb will not recompile the code. I'll still be debugging the old version of the code, even if pdb lists the new source code. So, does pdb not update the compiled code as the source changes? If not, is there a way to make it do so? I'd like to be able to stay in a single pdb session in order to keep my breakpoints and such. FWIW, gdb will notice when the program it's debugging changes underneath it, though only on a restart of that program. This is the behavior I'm trying to replicate in pdb.

• Can Atom be used for things besides syndication feeds?

  Purely in terms of its conceptual model, is the purpose of Atom (and RSS) only to provide a time-sequential series of frequently-updated items, such as "most recent blog posts" or "last twenty SVN commits," or can Atom be legitimately used to represent static and/or non-time-sequential listings/indices? As an example, "index of files under this directory", "dog breeds" or "music genres". Even if there's a date associated with the items, like a file's last modified date, what if you don't necessarily want time to be the primary consideration when you represent that model to your users? The context for this is passing around (generating and consuming) lists of things in a REST-ful environment, hopefully using a well-understood format, where "date something was created/updated" is a pertinent detail, but not the primary consideration. I realize there's probably no right answer, but wanted to get some perspectives. Thanks.

  Hi How to design a business object? I have a library which returns me an Object which have ten lists of other different objects. I need to store it into database all. List of objects are often like: class Item { private int id; private String name; private double point; } But the name is often the same. Like basic title of the product or code. Containing from 3 characters up to 70characters. Should I make conversion for every Object to: (or something similar) class ConvertedItem { private int id; private int code; private double point; } And have a separated table of codes ( I guess around 60). Or do not bother with duplicated stuff? It's not mission critical app. What would you do in my case? thanks in advance

• Lookup Field as a Site Column via CAML

  I'm trying to create a Lookup Field as a Site Column via CAML. The list I want to use as the source of the lookup is created in the Feature Receiver so I don't know it's ID. I've read several blog posts that indicate that I can just put the path to the list in the List attribute. It seems from the comments on these post that this solution works for some people but not for others. I'm in the latter group. • How do I build a specialized JQuery Timer

  I have an asp.net page where two grid views are available showing current stock market price updates. I need to update these two grid views every 20 seconds. So I was thinking of using JQuery to do this job. What I need is a timer which will fire every 20 seconds, send an ajax request to the servers, bring the order lists from the server using json and then update those two grid views. If a request to the server is still being served 20 seconds after it is fired, then I want the old one to be aborted without causing any trouble. I already know how to bring objects using json. I just need to figure out how to send a request every 20 seconds and cancel a request if it is still being server for 20 seconds.

What I need to do is combine these columns of data into one big column. I do not care if there are duplicate entries, however I want it to skip row 1 of each column. • Algorithm to find the smallest snippet from searching a document?

  I've been going through Skiena's excellent "The Algorithm Design Manual" and got hung up on one of the exercises. The question is: "Given a search string of three words, find the smallest snippet of the document that contains all three of the search words—i.e. , the snippet with smallest number of words in it. You are given the index positions where these words in occur search strings, such as word1: (1, 4, 5), word2: (4, 9, 10), and word3: (5, 6, 15). Each of the lists are in sorted order, as above." Anything I come up with is O(n^2)... This question is in the "Sorting and Searching" chapter, so I assume there is a simple and clever way to do it. I'm trying something with graphs right now, but that seems like overkill. Ideas? Thanks

• Is it possible / recommendable sending HTML emails containing Javascript?

  This is mostly a rhetorical question, as far as I've checked the answer is 'don't even bother', but I wanted to be really sure. We have an email app, where you can send email to lists of subscribers. This is not spam: it's used, for example, by an university to send communications to its students, by a museum to send emails to subscribers, etc. Recently, I was asked by a prospective client if it was possible to send html messages containing javascript without being marked as spam. Not knowing, I did a short trip of the webs and what I've got is (percentages out of my posterior) 'half the clients won't display properly', 'half the clients will flag you as spam' and 'half the clients will have blocked javascript altogether' (There's clearly some superposition). So the best solution seems to be adding a link to a proper page if really necessary. Have you got a different experience? Do you know of any email-merge solution that provides this feature? Do you know if specific clients accept it or refuse to display html with javascript?

• compute mean in python for a generator

  Hi, I'm doing some statistics work, I have a (large) collection of random numbers to compute the mean of, I'd like to work with generators, because I just need to compute the mean, so I don't need to store the numbers. The problem is that numpy.mean breaks if you pass it a generator. I can write a simple function to do what I want, but I'm wondering if there's a proper, built-in way to do this? It would be nice if I could say "sum(values)/len(values)", but len doesn't work for genetators, and sum already consumed values. here's an example: import numpy def my_mean(values): n = 0 Sum = 0.0 try: while True: Sum += next(values) n += 1 except StopIteration: pass return float(Sum)/n X = [k for k in range(1,7)] Y = (k for k in range(1,7)) print numpy.mean(X) print my_mean(Y) these both give the same, correct, answer, buy my_mean doesn't work for lists, and numpy.mean doesn't work for generators. I really like the idea of working with generators, but details like this seem to spoil things. thanks for any help -nick

  Yesterday, I was designing a Java class which I wanted to be initalized with Lists of various generic types: TheClass(List<String> list) { ... } TheClass(List<OtherType> list) { ... } This will not compile, as the constructors have the same erasure. I just went with factory methods differentiated by their names instead: public static TheClass createWithStrings(List<String> list) public static TheClass createWithOtherTypes(List<OtherType> list) This is less than optimal, as there isn't a single obvious location where all the different options for creating instances are available. I tried to search for better design ideas, but found surprisingly few results. What other patterns exist for designing around this problem?

• Best way to globally set every control's ValidationGroup property in an asp.net?

  I have a User Control with form items that is re-used considerably throughout a large web application, and up until this point the validation summary upon an invalid form submission is being handled by the .aspx that consumes the User Control. Now I need to set the ValidationGroup property at runtime for each of my form items controls (textboxes, lists, validators, etc). Rather than do it manually by setting each control I'm interested in iterating through all the controls in the User Control, detecting if that control has a ValidationGroup property, and setting it's value that way. Something like this: For Each ctrl As System.Web.UI.Control In Me.Controls ' so now what is the proper way to detect if this control has the ValidationGroup property Next Code sample in vb.net or c# works for me.   I’m looking for a solution to send DRY multipart emails in Rails. With DRY I mean that the content for the mail is only defined once. I’ve thought about some possible solutions but haven’t found any existing implementations. The solutions I’ve thought about are: load the text from I18n and apply Markdown for the html mail and apply Markdown with a special output type for the text mail where links are put in parenthesis after the link text bold, italic and other formatting that doesn't make sense are removed ordered and unordered lists are maintained generate only the html mail and convert that to text according to the above conditions Is there any available solution out there? Which one is probably the better way to do it?

• How to generate a report of IIS settings for easy perusal?

  Hello, I'm looking for a way to (hopefully) create a text file which lists all the settings in IIS for.. Virtual Directories Web sites Which framework is used on a certain website/directory directory of hosted files etc. Basically I want to do some investigation on some of our servers to figure out where certain projects are located, without digging through right clicking and looking for the directory name manually, etc, for every domain we host. The reasoning is that I often need to find access to files/projects I haven't worked on before, but historically, we don't have a strong naming scheme, so you can't just look where something "logically" would be - so, generating a list would be very helpful. Something like this would be awesome, but I'm looking for any tips at all Domainname1.com framework: ASP.NET 1.1 directory: c:\inetpub\wwwroot\domainname1.com Applications hosted at this domain: etc, etc. Plain text, XLS, XML.. anything other than right clicking through the whole list! • How Do You Parse Column Data ?

  I am trying to parse a file generated by LGA Tracon that lists the position data for aircraft over a given time frame. The data of interest starts with TRACKING DATA and ends with SST and there are thousands of entries per file. • .NET Web Service Proxy is adding special characters in XML

  My web service proxy seems to be adding special characters like "*" and "#" etc. within the xml nodes. My proxy created lists using arrays of objects. I am trying to create a generic list and then doing list.ToArray() to set the proxy MyProxyObject[] object. Is this the cause of the problem I am having? I plan on running fiddler on the request later but it is over SSL and I do not have access to the URL at the moment. • Tableview with sections managed by fetched results controller

  Hi, I'm quite new to CoreData and need help with one issue. I have tableview which simply lists cities stored in SQLite db. City is defined by "cityId" and "name" attributes. Data are fetched using NSFetchedResultsController and everything works fine except that I can't figure out how to make FetchedResultsController to group cities by first letter of city names. When I supply "name" for sectionNameKeyPath argument of initWithFetchRequest:managedObjectContext:sectionNameKeyPath:cacheName: method, it creates section for each city, which is obviously something I don't want. I can't figure out how to create an expression which would make it work in way I need. thanks for any tips and/or advices on this Matthes

• Legality Of Re-Implementing An Existing API (e.g. GNU implementing the UNIX APIs)

  I've often wondered about this. I'm not looking for legal advice, just casual opinions ;) If some company publishes an API on the web for their closed-source library, would it be legal for another party to release an open-source implementation of that API? Are function declarations considered source code? Take GNU implementing the UNIX APIs, for example. The UNIX standard gives the following function declaration and defines its required behaviour in English: char * mktemp(char *template); Now, consider an API that lists and declares and describes several thousand (more much complex) functions, enums, etc.; an API which defines a solution to a non-trival set of problems. If an open-source project publishes C headers that copy (verbatim) the function definitions contained in the closed-source company's published API, doesn't that violate some sort copyright law?

• I'm an idiot/blind and I can't find why I'm getting a list index error. Care to take a look at these 20 or so lines?

  Basically it's supposed to take a set of coordinates and return a list of coordinates of it's neighbors. However, when it hits here:if result[i][0] < 0 or result[i][0] >= board.dimensions: result.pop(i) when i is 2, it gives me an out of index error. I can manage to have it print result[2][0] but at the if statement it throws the errors.
