• Ubuntu, No wireless networks found after correctly installed madwifi

  Hi, I just installed madwifi on my MSI laptop with an Atheros AR5001 wifi card & Lucid. As far as I can see and according to System - Administration - Hardware drivers the install was successful and the card + driver is up and running. However, I don't see any wireless network (my windows PC can see about 5 wireless networks). I tried it with the network manager applet as well as with wicd. If I try to connect to "Hidden Wireless Network" via nm-applet, it will start to connect for a while but is unable too (although I supply it with the correct WEP settings & key) So, I'm unable to use my wireless network. What am i doing wrong? • Can't connect to local SQL Server

  I'm banging my head against the wall here and can't get things figured out. Yesterday I uninstalled SQL Server 2008 Express and installed a full copy of SQL Server 2008 R2. Everything installed fine but I can't connect to the database to save my life. There is a similar question here that never got answered and I'm not sure if this may be specific to 2008 R2 and how I may have installed. Under my old configuration (SQL Express) I connected with "DM\SQLEXPRESS" just fine. So far I've tried: DM\MSSQLSERVER - .\MSSQLSERVER - \MSSQLSERVER - MSSQLSERVER - DM\Dave\MSSQLSERVER and I get the "cannot connect to server" error every time. I have the service installed as well as the SQL Server Browser that I have started. If anyone had any suggestions that would be great.

• Intel video driver upgrade now makes my external monitor display red-only with HDMI cable.

  I have an HP G60 notebook with a Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset video display (Driver version is 8.15.10.2021). OS is Win7 Home Premium. I also have an LG widescreen display that I was connecting to the laptop using an HDMI cable. It was working great, until I applied an Intel 4 Series Express Chipset update from Windows Update. After the update, if I plug the laptop to the monitor using the HDMI cable, it appears I only get the Magenta channel, cause that is all I see. If I connect with the VGA cable, it works fine. So, is it possible it is just the HDMI cable (which IS cheap in this case - fire sale at Blockbuster), and not related to the video driver update at all?

  hi there, just a question in between. a friend of mine brougth me a laptop that does not work anymore and wanted me to check whether i can do something. she told me its windows 7, and startup screen and login screen look like it. howevere, as she gets a bluescreen on startup it is only possible to boot in safe mode where the system pretends to be windows xp sp3. the system also may have 1 gig of ram but the system itself states that it has 954 mb of ram which is a value i´ve never seen before. is there everything corrupt from operating system to hardware, or am i just a newbie that does not know that windows 7 pretends to be winxp sp3 in safe mode? or is this laptop just the victim of an illegal, crazy copy of xp sold as win7? maybe some strange chinese stuff? i also recognized that the startup screen of Outlook Express is pronounced as "Outllok Express" (no typo) i´m kinda confused, maybe someone could put light into this ;) thanks

  Hi everyone, I am looking for a new laptop/netbook and I have two simple requirements: must be small (10-12in screen) and light (<=3-3.5pounds); must work with a dock into which I can put a PCI or PCI Express card. Basically, I have no performance requirements. Discontinued or low-end are fine. All I want is something easy to carry that when at work I can use a PCI/PCI Express card with to do multi-head. Eg, if an Acer Aspire 1410 fitted the second requirement I would by one in a blink. The only solution with which I am acquainted are Thinkpads that can go into the Thinkpad Advanced Dock. XPath has "contains", but if Event Viewer will support it, I cannot seem to figure out the syntax for invoking it.

He sad he uses Outlook express, but he Use Vista so I'm not sure it's Vistas Mail Client or Outlook. • nodejs server hanging from time to time

  I have a node server (0.6.6) running an Express application, along with Mongoose and s3, on an Ubuntu 11.04 machine. Several times per hour, the server is hanging. That means that the application is working fine, I see the express loggings, and then all of a sudden the server stops responding. No errors, no traces, no loggings, and strangely enough the browser won't show the request even in the network debugging window. From any machine in the local network it's the same behaviour. I restart the server and it's okay again for several minutes, then again starts to hang, everytime while doing something different. The same application on Amazon on the same Ubuntu version works fine and never hangs. I know all this is kind of vague, but I don't know where to start. Has any of you seen something like this before? Any idea?

• Mobile Intel 965 vs 4 Series chipset speed differences

  A client of ours is having a problem panning on a mapping application that we write on their panasonic toughbooks (CF-19's). One of their toughbooks the panning is fairly smooth while on the other it is really slow. Doesn't help that they have all the settings turned up, but I would of thought any reasonably new graphics card (even shared memory) would have more than adequate graphic speed. I am pretty sure that the graphic adapter is to blame, but I can't find anything out about either chipset (level of acceleration, non-problems, etc). All I get is the intel data sheets. The faster panning one is on the Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset while the slower is on the Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset. Is this expected? Does it sound like a driver problem? They both have the same amount of ram and same cpu.

• Windows 7: from Geforce 8800 to three monitors?

  I've got a GeForce 8800 that I've quite happy with. It drives my two 23" widescreen displays well. Now I've got a 19" standard display that I want to stick between the two widescreens. My second PCIe 16x slot is unused (as is the PCI slot below that), and I want to add a card to my Win7 x64 system. This 19" display won't be used for gaming, so I don't need anything fancy. Here are two cards I was considering, but I'm wondering if they're bad choices for some reason? If they're both fine choices, which is better and why? Again, I'm needing to power only the 19" standard display with this card, and it won't play games. I just need 1280x1024 in Win7 x64. • MS Access ADP front end and SQL Server back end for field data collection?

  I am an anthropologist. I am going to the field and will use a netbook to collect survey data. The survey forms will need to allow me to enter data into multiple tables, search tables, allow subforms, and be fast enough to not slow down my interview. I have considered storing the data in a SQL Server Express 2008 R2 server (there will be a lot of data) while using a Microsoft Access data project as a front end. To cut down the number of steps required to collect and store data, I'm considering using the netbook for both data storage and collection (after reading this article about SQL Server on a netbook). My questions are: (1) Is there a simpler solution that is also gratis (gratis because I already have a MS Access license from my workplace, and SQL Server Express is, obviously, free)?   I use the following directive in sshd_config to detect if the user trying to login to a server is called developer, and issue a bash script to the user if that is the case: Match User developer ForceCommand /bin/dev_login However, when the user tries to upload a file using SCP, they can't, as the dev_login script is interrupting the process. Is it possible to use the Match directive to detect if the connection is SCP rather than a request to open a shell?

• GIT server with username and password authentication

  I would like to set a GIT server and let my developers to login using username and password in order to commit and make changes to the projects. I need also to manage developer access to projects (I think I should use gitolite for this). How can I do that? I am used to SVN which is easy because you can set username and password for each developer, which can easily access the repository without having the generate an ssh key and put it on the server.
