• How do you kill unwanted feelings that stops you from learning? [closed]

  Sometimes I find myself want to learn PHP and sometimes I say no no I should learn ASP.NET and C#. This is my situation since a year maybe and I did not learn that much! I like to focus on one thing and love it and give it most of my time. However, as you can see I keep asking questions about the two PHP and .NET and I am still lost!. Which one should I choose from the two? How can I choose it? I want to be seen as a professional in one of them and I want to work as a freelancer to get money.   I am in the pre-coding phase of creating a website. I know that it will be account based (users have to register/login to use the features). I also know that the server will have to do certain operations that are timer based, that is to say that user will have events that will trigger at a point chosen by the user and do something. I am searching for a good choice in server-side technology, and was wondering what my options are and what the best choice is. I would prefer open technology and something that doesn't use interpreted languages (Java, .net). My first thought is PHP + PGSQL for serverside and HTML+CSS+JS for clients, but I am still looking at my options.

• Z-index preventing on hover attribute on another element [migrated]

  I have two different elements (div class="") within a larger container. Let's call them div class="overlay_container" and div class="title." The div class="overlay_container" has a subclass, .image, which creates an overlay over the entire larger container on hover. The div class="title" has a z-index of 10,000 and lies over .image and therefore over the overlay. Unfortunately, when you hover over "title," the subclass overlay image underneath disappears. I know the problem is obviously that the "title" div is right over the other divs and therefore the on hover will disappear due to the z-index. But how do I fix this? How do I make it so that when you hover over the "title," the .image overlay still appears? If your answer involves jQuery, could you please tell me where to put the script (before the /head tag)? Given that there are few resources, it is desired to minimize the management overhead. Two questions in this scenario: What tools would you use to prioritize the tasks and track their completion, while tending to minimize the overhead? What criteria would you take into consideration to determine which task to assign to the next available resource given that the primary objective is to increase throughput (more projects finished per time unit, this objective conflicts with starting one project and finishing it and then moving on to the next)? • Site inaccessible by some people, fine for others [on hold]

  A couple of days ago my website www.howellphoto.com (hosted by one.com, wordpress site) started loading really slowly, and I have been unable to access any pages linked from the homepage. Several of my friends have found the same issue, yet many are able to access the site without problem. Live support at one.com have not been all that much help, requesting the ip addresses of a few people who cannot access the site, and saying it could be a firewall issue. Wordpress support (my site was created in prophotoblogs) have been better and have updated all plugins, etc, but can see no issue from their end. My main issue is that even if there was a local fix that I could do on my computer, this would not help wih any potential customers visiting my site for information! This is driving me crazy!!! • Image caching when rendering the same images on different pages

  I'm told to think about caching of images that will be displayed on the page. The images will be repeated throughout the website on different pages and I'm told to figure out the best way to cache these images. There could be few to dozen of images on single page. Here's few questions: Will browser caching work to display the same images across different web pages? Should I rather store images in stringified form in a memory instead, using JavaScript arrays? Store them on hard drive using 'localStorage'? What would be easiest yet best option for this? Are there any other alternatives? How to force cache? Any other information would be greatly appreciated...

• Counting product releases if you work on the backend/online services?

  I am trying to update my resume, and I would like to count the number of "product releases" that I was directly involved in with a company. It would seem to serve as a performance metric. The problem is that I was working on the backend of a very large distributed system, like along the lines of Hadoop or other huge database. We had regular 6-month major releases and other minor releases. My manager kept saying that "shipped" these releases, but "shipping" a product to me sounds like releasing single pieces of software, like Microsoft would ship Office 11 or something. Any ideas on "product releases" for backend service engineers, or any other type of performance metric?

I'm a recent college graduate, and this would be my first "real" job out of school. • what to learn & practice to be a programmer (not for Job) [closed]

  I want to be able to write programs (tools) for my own needs, and I want to tell the computer what to do, not to be strict to what other's told it to do. I have a good knowledge of Linux & Windows, I am also have a bit of Python in my head, but I think that I need some guidance on what languages or practices to invest my time into in order to be able to tell the computer what to do. I know there is a lot of posts similar to what I am asking here, but there is a big difference and so I have opened this thread. My goal isn't to work at a company, so I don't need to learn how to work as a team, I don't need to learn as much how to maintain my code nor how to write it nice for others to understand (I know it is important but not for me). I don't want to learn it as a profession, but as a serious hobby (you can call it hacking as long as you know what cracking means), my end goal is to be able to understand other's people code, and to write my own code with a lot of deep knowledge of the ins and outs of the computer system in order to gain from it as much as I can. So in essence my questions are: How can I understand, in depth, computers, in order to exploit them as much as I can? What should I learn? Are there any books that I should read? Is it possible to do this, or do I have to learn every aspect of programming?

• Javascript Event in Innerhtml Resulting from PHP Server Script

  I'm (very slowly) making a website, and I'm creating a search engine for the database, which is essential to organize the dependencies during data entry. Anyway, what I would like is to type a few keywords into a box, have a menu pop up with various search results, and have the box fill with the ID number of the selected entry when it's clicked. Currently, I have a document called search.php which fills a div called search-output using xmlhttp.open() and the innerhtml property. Everything is working perfectly except for filling the original search box with the ID number when clicking. My first attempt was to add an onclick event to each entry in the output from search.php. Unfortunately, I found that javascript inserted into innerhtml is not run for security reasons. I've been Googling for hours but haven't been able to find a solution. How can I get the original search text box to fill with the correct ID when I click it? Is what I'm doing a good setup for the results I desire, or is there a better way to integrate search features into data entry?

• Subdomain Is Redirected and Causing an Error Because www. is Added

  On my site, say example.com, if I try to access test.example.com, Firefox automatically adds www. to test.example.com, making it www.test.example.com, which causes an error. However, if I visit a site like my.ebay.com, no www. is added so no error occurs. What's going on? Just in case, my .htaccess file is as follows: Options -Multiviews RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example.com RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.example.com/$1 [R=301,L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^(.*)$ $1.php I looked through Firebug and it seems like Firefox doesn't even make an attempt to reach test.example.com before reverting to www.test.example.com. One nuance I didn't realize until now. If I try to access the site using test.example.com/, the www. is added. If however that trailing slash is not there, then I am sent to the subdomain properly.

• How can I get non-programmer colleagues on board with bespoke software rather than Dynamics CRM + Sharepoint?

  I am working with a company which designs and builds one-off machines. They have been 'dabbling' with hosted Dynamics CRM and Sharepoint (on different servers!) in an attempt to centralise their data and help colleagues collaborate more effectively across projects. They haven't used either system to their potential. Now we are looking at the engineering department who already use a form of version control software for the various CAD files (Autodesk Vault) however it is becoming increasingly necessary to implement more of a generic file version control system as they use many more files than can be managed in Vault (sometimes just photos or scans of paper documents), hence why they were looking at using Sharepoint. However... as the 'programmer' of the bunch, I can see several scenarios which don't seem to fit well with the Dynamics + Sharepoint approach; simple reports based on cross-table queries, exporting certain metrics as a spreadsheet, defining project hierarchies and many-many relationships, and as such I have been pushing for an in-house developed 'ECM' / 'ERP' software package (perhaps in .NET or php). Some colleagues seem to attach a greater value to the MS software (perhaps becuase it has a logo!) but don't see that it's just a framework, not a solution. Can anyone provide a good example of when custom software would actually be better than using Dynamics + Sharepoint and how do I relate that to non-technical staff?

• Has anyone used game salad before and how does it compare with cocos2d in terms of 2d game development

  First a short intro. I am new to the game development space and want to make some 2d games for iOS. I first come across cocos2d and kobold but then wanted something more graphical for rapid prototyping. I then found Game Maker which doesn't support iOS but is fairly easy to learn and then found Game Salad which supports iOS as well as other platforms. I know this question has been ask before but I want to know in terms of the types of games I want to develop what an learning investment path would be best. The types of games genre I am interest are: Side scrollers Simple games like diamond dash or ninja fruits, shanghai, etc Old fashioned zelda or dragonquest type (nintendo fan here:-) 2d adventure RPG games (real time or turn based) Mystery turn based games like carmen sandiego, wizardry, myst etc. So now the question becomes Which game development environment should I invest my time in learning. Game Salad or cocos2d? It would seem game salad would be great for quickies being graphical but in terms of 2d platform games etc would there be speed/performance/feature penalties? Are there certain 2d games genre of the 4 above that Game salad is better at while certain type cocos2d would be better at? Anyone with experience of both can share some pointers? The site has a Homepage, a Store page (where all accessories are displayed), a page for each of the accessories description, an about page and a contact page. There is also a whole set up for shopping cart and checkout (irrelevant to this question). My issue is the SEO. Where can I put the keywords? The home page has only the menu and some photos. The store page displays the items and its titles. Then the specific item's page has a description of the item (pulled from the database), category and price. However, I feel like this is not enough for SEO for google ranking. Where could I add tags in this type of site?

• Advice on what to learn? [closed]

  Currently I work as a .NET C# programmer, quite fresh faced at that (only been working professionally for 8 months) I'm enjoying what I'm doing, but I'm now thinking ahead for other languages to learn. I've heard from quite a few seasoned developers that they reckon it's worth getting in to HTML5. Before I asked this question I read a few of the other questions similar to this, but most were dated back a few years. I'm wondering what your advice would be to an aspiring programmer, what I should avoid going for (i.e. as I understand it Flash is essentially going to be phased out due to HTML5) I was looking in to WPF and the more updated .NET technologies, but someone advised me that WPF stuff will probably be redundant in the future.   I am just messing around, trying to figure out how stuff works and right now I have a couple questions about HTML, JS and CSS engines. I know there are two major JavaScript engines out there - V8 and JavaScriptCore (WebKit's JS engine as far as I know). Is that correct? And what are the main HTML + CSS renderers out there? Let's say I want to build a web browser using V8 (I saw it has some documentation and stuff + I like the way it works), what are the best options for me? Partially another question. Is there any bare browser that uses V8 and runs on Ubuntu at least? P.S. I am a Ubuntu user and prefer C++.

• What can I do when the interviewer doesn't know the answer to his/her own question?

  Yesterday I had a terrible experience in an interview. Interviewer asked me about pure virtual function. I said, It may or may not have definition in base class, but derived classes should provide definition unless they also want to be abstract class. But interviewer kept on asking that "Can pure virtual have definition !!! ???"... I said yes. Again he said "Pure ?" I said yes. It is allowed, derived classes can explicitly call that function if they want that particular behavior. He sent me out. I am sure that he doesn't know the fact that pure virtual function can have definition. How to deal with this kind of Interviewers ? After asking 2nd time, should i lie that it can't have definition ? :) Or i should stick to my words and loose the job opportunity ?

• Why my MainWindow doesn't get he focus?

Why? I don't understand it. I would like to write a method to focus_changed, but I can't if it doesn't works.

• What parts of Java I should know by now?

  I have been working in the enterprise Java field, mostly for financial institutions, for about seven years. Beyond core Java, what are "parts" of Java I should know by now? Should as in it will be useful either to nail the interview, or in an actual job. For example, I have never used JSP beyond "hello, world", but I don't suppose that it's something I need to go learn. But I have got core Spring pretty well done. I've read up on GC but that was a while back and need to re-visit it. I'm looking for one suggestion per post please.
