• Backtrack My "Education"

  About a year or so ago, I decided to start programming. I really, just jumped into a language (Perl) and went from there. What I regret is that I just jumped in: I didn't learn the basics (if you would call them basics). I didn't learn about Computer Science. This issue, I believe, is holding me back. Where should I "restart"? Are there any books, articles, etc. that I should read? Are there any topics an experienced programmer should know? What's your advice? Thanks! • How can I distribute a unique database already in production?

  Let's assume a successful web Spring application running on a MySQL or PostgreSQL database. The traffic is becoming so high and the amount of data is becoming so big that a distributed database solution needs to be implemented to address scalability issue. Let's also assume this application is using Hibernate and the data access layer is cleanly separated with DAOs. Ideally, one should be able to add or remove databases easily. A failback solution is welcome too. What would be the best strategy to scale this database? Is it possible to minimize sharding code (Shard) in the application?

• Openbox overhead is similar to that with gnome-panel

  I just installed openbox via sudo apt-get install openbox. It already has obconf, btw. I noticed that when I logged into my openbox session instead of the one I usually use (gnome-panel and NOT Ubuntu 2D or one of the high overhead environments) and checked via htop, I found that a similar amount of RAM was being occupied (~600 MB or so) with openbox or gnome-panel. What gives? Openbox looks lighter but it certainly isn't any different. Obviously the same daemons etc would run in both environments as they share the same folders. Is gnome-panel as good as openbox then?

• Markup format or script for data files?

  The game I'm designing will be mainly written in a high level scripting language (leaning towards either Lua or Squirrel) with a C++ core. In addition to scripts I'm also going to need different data files. Many data files will be for static information such as graphical assets and monster types. I'd also want to create and update data files at runtime for user information like option settings and game saves. Can I get away with using plain script files (i.e. .lua or .nut files) for my data files, or is it better to use dedicated markup formats like XML or YAML? If I use script files, loaded separately from my true scripts, then I wouldn't need an extra library to read those files. Scripting languages like Lua also have table syntax that lend themselves towards data definition. On the other hand I'd have to write my own schema check code. These languages also don't seem to support serialization "out of the box" like the markup format libraries do.

• Is there now any way to convert mp3 files to m4a or aac 192kbit?

  Since about two years now I am trying to find a way to convert high quality mp3 files to m4a or aac files with a fixed bitrate 192k. Please don't suggest using another format - i thought this through as far as it goes. The problem here is: ffmpeg obvioulsy can't convert to a higher bitrate than 152k. Even when it says it does so the resulting files still have 152k instead of 192k. ffmpeg also has/had a bug not writing the bitrate into the audio file tags which means when testing you have to calculate the bitrate manually by dividing the filesize by the length of the audio in seconds (resulting in 152k - see above) choosing faac as converter gets me the same results other programs don't work reliably (see this thread Howto convert audio files to *.m4a? I know that this is not an original new problem but I am wondering if there is still no way to convert with ubuntu/kubuntu 12.04 after a lot time passed and I can't find some of the bug issues mentioned in the other thread anymore. So: Is there a solution after all?

I like to learn from videos but most videos I've found on the internet are provided by people who do not follow good practices. My second option is to learn from books but I did not find a good book for starters in PHP! It would be very helpful for me if you can tell me about your story in learning PHP, what are things that I should avoid? How to learn about PHP security from the beginning to avoid unlearn something later on?. • Configure audio on HP ENVY 4 ultrabook

  I want to configure audio for ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop. Currently the audio just does not play. If i try and plug in headphones then somewhere midway to being fully plugged in the audio plays on the headphones, I plug in further and the sound disappears. How do I get this to work? lspci | grep audio Audio device: Intel Corporation Panther Point High Definition Audio Controller My laptop is one the beats edition HP laptops, and the driver for win7 was an IDT HD audio driver. --EDIT-- The output for cat /proc/asound/card0/codec* | grep Codec is Codec: IDT 92HD91BXX Codec: Intel PantherPoint HDMI I need to get both the IDT card to work and the HDMI card to work with my TV. --EDIT-- --EDIT 2-- I have added blacklist snd-usb-audio to the end of the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf Now the sound plays from my laptop speakers only when I plug in a headphones/external speaker. • The danger of changing the domain of your portfolio

  So I have a online portfolio that is available at mervin-ux-portfolio.com but I am planning to change hosts since the current host I am hosting it with is hitting me with a very high yearly renewal rate. When I was inquiring about domain transfers ,,they told me that since I had not initiated the domain transfer within 14 days of the expiry of the domain ,they cannot do it immediately and it would take about two weeks to to release the domain name. Since I dont like the idea of my site being down for like 2 weeks ,I was wondering if I should start afresh with a new domain on a new host and what were the potential dangers of that ( I have the entire site backup,so creating a replica of the site on the new host wont be hard) I also wont be losing any business or work since I work full time currently but I was just wondering about the challenges in terms of getting my domain name back to the top of search results and basically getting it out there assuming I go the new domain name approach. I know this is strictly not an UX question but I was hoping people could give some suggestions on what I should do

  I erased Windows 7 and installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my Dell Latitude E4200. I an very happy with my choice but with little pity. I cannot use the wireless service in my university as the build-in device works unstable. I bought a USB wireless device, which solve the problem. However, the build-in device keep to sent me message about unable to connect, which waste laptop's cup & battery. The phsical bottom to turn off wireless affect both devices. So the question is: "How can I manually shut down wireless device?" There is another interest comes to my mind: "Does 2 wireless improve the overall internet usage if I run a high-internet-consuming program like BT ?" Thank for your time and energy.

• Mail Hosting That Will Allow Outbound Bulk Mail?

  No, I'm not a spammer! I do volunteer work for a non-profit social services agency. They send out daily email with several hundred recipients on each message. Their web hosting company has been flagging the email as spam due to the volume. So I'm looking for an email hosting provider that won't do that. (I can separate out the web hosting function; we just need mail hosting right now.) They can't use something like MailChimp, Constant Contact, or Vertical Response because some of the mail is just inbound emails they aggregate and send out, and they don't want the overhead of "rebuilding" it in a "newsletter" service. I think that Google Apps for Business might be a good solution, but the pricing is just too high for this under-funded non-profit. I've applied for the non-profit discount but haven't heard back yet. Is there mail hosting service that might fit their needs? Thanks in advance.

• What the different hardware temperatures listed in psensor, sensor viewer etc reffer to?

  I have installed psensor and see a list of temperatures, but listed as ”Temperature 1”, 2, 3 etc . I can only guess where the processor is: but who's who for sure? The same question stands for Sensors Viewer. I can also type sensors in Terminal but I get no more than that acpi -t gives Thermal 0: ok, 65.0 degrees C Thermal 1: ok, 37.9 degrees C Thermal 2: ok, 56.0 degrees C Thermal 3: active, 71.0 degrees C Considering psensor, I know for a fact that: - the temperature that varies most depending on the CPU use is Temp1 and it is one of the two highest - the other high temperature is Temp4 and it goes to the ceiling when using youtube/flash - Temp2 is very stable at a medium level of 50-60 degrees Celsius - Temp3 is by far the lowest and most imobile So, I guess Temp1 is the CPU temperature, and Temp4 is the GPU temperature. Temp2 and 3 must be the motherboard and the hdd. Does anybody know for sure?

  Oracle Fusion Middleware customers use Oracle Service Bus (OSB) for virtualizing Service endpoints and implementing stateless service orchestrations. Behind the performance and speed of OSB, there are a couple of key design implementations that can affect application performance and behavior under heavy load. One of the heavily used feature in OSB is the Service Callout pipeline action for message enrichment and invoking multiple services as part of one single orchestration. Overuse of this feature, without understanding its internal implementation, can lead to serious problems. This post will delve into OSB internals, the problem associated with usage of Service Callout under high loads, diagnosing it via thread dump and heap dump analysis using tools like ThreadLogic and OQL (Object Query Language) and resolving it. The first section in the series will mainly cover the threading model used internally by OSB for implementing Route Vs. Service Callouts. Please refer to the blog post for more details.

  I believe that my current game project is very well-suited for educational gaming; so well-suited, in fact, that I know of several different schools (one community college and at least one or two high schools) that have used versions of it at some time or another. And that's without any such marketing on my part. I'd like to expand on this part of the potential user base. But I have absolutely no experience in dealing with school administrations. • Is there animation software available for Ubuntu?

  Is there commercial-grade computer animation software available for Ubuntu, similar to the professional software sold for the Windows operating system? This question goes out to those of you who may be using such software professionally. My daughter recently graduated from the Art Institute of Seattle, and needs to put together an animation portfolio in order to interest employers in the field. As you know, such software is usually provided by the employer and the costs are high - several thousand dollars. I suggested that she investigate Ubuntu as a possible way to acquire the tools she needs. But, since I have no idea what might be available, either as open source or proprietary animation software, I am reaching out to the Ubuntu community for help in the hope someone who is using such software can help her. • Algorithms for rainfall + river creation in procedurally generated terrain

  I've recently become fascinated by the things that can be done with procedurally terrain and have started experimenting with world building a bit. I'd like to be able to make worlds something like Dwarf fortress with biomes created from meshing together various maps. So first step has been done. Using the diamond-square algorithm I've created some nice hieghtmaps. Next step is I would like to add some water features and have them somewhat realistically generated with rainfall. I've read about a few different approaches such as starting at the high points of the map, and "stepping" down to the lowest neighboring point, pooling/eroding as it works its way down to sea level. Are there any documented algorithms with this or are they more off the cuff? Would love any advice/thoughts.

• Google Keyword Competition rating

  Google offers a Keyword application that allows me to see the number of time a particular query has been made in Google. There is a column in the results named "Competition" (Actually its Concurrence in French, I'm just translating). Its a rating from 0 to 1, as in percentage. What indicator is that? EDIT * Is this something useful I should rely on? I'm not sure about how to interpret this data. Should I go for less competitive keywords with a lower number of searches or not worry about it and go for the highly searched keywords anyway? Is 50% considered high? what about 75% ? I have a very niche market that sell expensive offline services, so the very long tail is my goal (I assume). If you didn't already figured out, I'm very new to SEO =)

  I have a small website about a commercial product, with a description and tutorial. 2 days ago it was in position 11th in Google search results, without any kind of SEO optimization on my part. Today it's gone. Totally gone - not even in the first 200 results. It's still very high in bing.com and duckduckgo.com. The site is very on topic. It's hosted under domain Keyword.com, and it's about commercial product which addresses the Keyword. How can I know what happened?

• What zoomable image viewers are there for websites?

  What zoomable image viewers are there? By these I mean tools that one can embed in a website to let a user zoom in on and pan around a high res image, a canonical example being http://www.zoomify.com/ (see the demo on their home page). Comments on them are welcome. I'm personally looking for something simple and cheap/free which ideally doesn't require Flash, and will accept the answer that comes closest to these requirements. But others who find this question may have different requirements, so all suggestions will be helpful. I have of course searched; I've found Zoomify, http://www.openzoom.org/ and http://code.google.com/p/galapix/ but none seem to meet my requirements, though I could be wrong and others may have more expert comments on these.

• Are the technologies used in an application part of the architecture, or do they represent implementation/detailed design details?

  When designing and writing documentation for a project an architecture needs to be clearly defined: what are the high-level modules of the system, what are their responsibilities, how do they communicate with each other, what protocols are used etc. But in this list, should the concrete technologies be specified or this is actually an implementation detail and need to be specified at a lower level? For example, consider a distributed application that has two modules which communicate asynchronously via AMQP protocol, mediated by a message broker. The fact that these modules use the Spring AMQP library for sending and receiving messages is a fact that needs to be specified in the architecture or is a lower-level detailed design/implementation detail?
