• Install newer version of GCC in Knoppix

  I have Knoppix 7.30 installed on a USB with a persistent file. It comes with GCC 4.7.2. I would like to install GCC 4.9.x or 4.8.x. Being that Knopppix is based on Debian I would normally do something like apt-get upgrade But as far as I understand it's not recommended to do this with Knoppix. Warning: apt-get upgrade is a BAD IDEA. It will, quite probably, render your KNOPPIX remaster unbootable, or broken in some way. A far safer method is to only upgrade packages as necessary. I can say from experience that that is the cse. So how should I go about installing GCC 4.9? Another option would be to "remaster" knoppix to use GCC 4.9 by default rather than install it with a persistent file. I would be happy with either solution.

• gtk2/mate apps are choppy on debian testing [migrated]

  I have recently upgraded to a core-i7 system and now all the apps from mate (GTK2 based) are very slow. Basically when I switch to a workspace that has a couple mate-terminals open, they are redrawn as if these were sent over the network. GTK3 apps and firefox work properly and are refreshed instantly. I'm running Debian testing. I have tried to reinstall xorg and related packages and everything seems to work fine except for this. Here is my xorg.log. Any hints?

• Alien: .rpm -> .deb | Compability / Built per system?

  At the moment I'm playing a bit with alien (for OpenVZ packages on Debian) and was wondering myself about one question for which I was not able to find an answer anywhere. Therefor I thought it might be smart to ask here :) The question is... If I convert a .rpm to .deb on a system, how compatible is this .deb package? What do I mean? Will the .deb be working on other systems as well or is it per-system, e.g. that on every system the .deb package will be little different? That i386 and x86_64 are different is clear, so this doesn't need to be answered :) Examples that would be nice to know are for example: .deb built on Debian 6 64-bit - Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit (compatible?) .deb built on Debian 6 64-bit - Debian 5 64-bit (compatible?) etc. Thanks anyone reading this / helping me! • Using Zentyal to control several servers

  I am currently in the process of creating a home server, made up of several virtual machines, each running a different type of server (i.e. a file server, a multimedia server, a firewall and a print server as of now). Today I discovered this new software, Zentyal, which looks interesting for system and network administration. However, I haven't understood one thing: can it be used only with its preconfigured packages or can it also be used to control other servers running other programs (in my case, the four virtual machines)?. Also, would you suggest to use such a program or do you think it's better to control each server on its own?

• In Ubuntu I make changes to php.ini but nothing happens

  Hi, Apache with php works well, but none of the changes I make in php.ini have effect, I've even delete all the contents of the file, then restart Apache, and run phpinfo() and surprisingly everything continues working well. The file I'm editing is the one that appears in the phpinfo() like "Loaded Configuration File". (/etc/php5/apache2/php.ini) P.S. I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 and PHP 5.2 Thanks in advance. More Details: I'm restarting with sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart, I've also tried sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 stop, and then start, at restarting I get: Restarting web server apache2 apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.1.1 for ServerName ... waiting apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.1.1 for ServerName [ OK ] "which php" did not produce any results. • Run application with other user

  OS: Fedora 14 GUI: GNOME I need to run an application with another user then the "default" (normally used). Purpose: create a ".desktop" file on my desktop to run e.g.: Google Chrome with another user (NOT ROOT! - so beesu doesn't count.) There aren't any gksu, or kdesu packages in Fedora 14. Why? So i want to create a user with "adduser SOMEONE", and i want to run e.g.: Google Chrome with "SOMEONE" - then it will have minimum permissions, "more security". Thank you!

• How do I make an encrypted disk image on Debian?

  I'm basically looking for an equivalent to OS X's encrypted sparsebundles. The solution should have support for file ACLs and should not force me to specify a size in the beginning (the image should only take up as much space as it needs) or require root access to mount and unmount. Ideally, I should be able to set two different passwords (both for the same data), but that's not too important. (I do have root access to the machine and so can install packages and such, but I would rather not have to sudo just to mount an image.)

• Why isn't Adobe software multilingual?

  I work in a design studio with several non-native English speakers (in this case, into Japanese and Chinese). I have installed the latest Creative Suite (CS5) on our mac stations and was once again disappointed that unlike so many modern software packages there is still no option to change the language of the software. Most of the team has been good enough to work on their English, but it would be much more helpful for them to work in their native language. Why does Adobe continue to require separate licenses based on language? Are they operating under the assumption that only a single language is ever spoken in any given country? Are there any other third party options or does Adobe at least have some sort of statement regarding this policy?

• Weblogic Class-Path Dependencies EAR

  I am deploying an EAR in a WebLogic node with many jars defined in the bootstrap (startWeblogicServer.bat) class-path. The problem is that my ear and the bootstrap contain different versions of the same jars, not only that but certain jars contain extracted third party libraries which also differ in version from the WebLogic bootstrap jars causing all kinds of classpath errors. I know you can set preferred jars in the EAR application xml but, this can be very tedious to resolve with regards to jars which include extracted third party libraries in terms of understanding all the dependencies.. Is there a correct approach that i need to be taking here? Am i thinking about this in the wrong way? Any help would be greatly appreciated! So far prefer-web-inf-classes has been recommended but wont work because i'm not deploying a WAR, also prefer-application-packages is what we are currently using but still has the issue described above... Anymore advice out there?? Thanks!

  Usually when I install a common package like PostgreSQL or MySQL or Python etc using Yum it installs the files held within those packages into locations specific to CentOS itself. It may also install scripts specific to CentOS only. These paths may not be the same as the defaults found within the source distributions found on the PostgreSQL, MySQL, Python etc project websites and the scripts are usually unique to CentOS. Recently when I installed PostgreSQL under Ubuntu I found some very nice distribution specific information about how the install was organized and how to use the package in a Ubuntu way. I found this information in /usr/share/doc/ Is there any such information included within CentOS?

• How do I install the vi text editor ONLY on my Cygwin installation?

  I have managed to install the Cygwin on my Windows Vista machine. I installed using the default settings. When I try to do vi in the Bash shell, Bash tells me command not found. I believe I need to install the Cygwin editors package which include the vi editor. The nightmare is every time I run the Cygwin setup and select ONLY the editors package and specifically the Vim and select install, Cygwin setup tries to install all other packages, very frustrating!! Is there an easier way of installing just a single package using the Cygwin setup utility?

• Running ubuntu 10.04 without a laptop's primary display

  I have an IBM thinkpad(R50e) whose display is broken. I would still like to use the laptop by connecting it to an external monitor and keyboard/mouse. This is what I did: Removed the hard disk from the broken IBM Put the hard disk in the working IBM and installed 10.04 on it. It booted fine and I installed many packages and stuff. I put the hard disk back into the broken display IBM thinking I could use it by connecting it to an external monitor that I own. Well, it turns out that while booting, the display shows up but because the display shifts from the VGA display to the primary display mid-boot, the laptop does not boot. Is there a way in which I can force the laptop to not use its primary display while booting. I looked at Randr and also grub.conf settings but nothing seemed to work. Please help!

  I am working on email server, since i tried several times to create email server on ubuntu12.04LTS with postfix + dovecote + postfixadmin + courier + clamav + spamassassin. But everytime i install these packages i face new problems, like mails send to localhost users and found in users maildir. But I can't determine how to configure/setup for send an email to external smtp like gmail, yahoo. The most worst thing i can't determine how to use sasl, because i am not using SSL so it is not worthy for my domain. Package managers for Windows What I'd like to know is if they are all to be trusted to install in Windows 7 (64bit) so that the manager: Installs the latest version of software. Supports 64 bit installs where possible. Strips ads/toolbars/similar stuff. The later two points from previous questions are good but not a priority in the preparation of a clean install Provides a way to keep the programs updated after installation. If I can add custom installers to the software, that's a big plus. I am more concerned here about using a legitimate application I can trust to establish the basis of clean image of my operating system with all the application of choice installed without fuss and spam/bloatware.

• How to prevent firefox from updating

  I have firefox 3.6.x in Mint Linux. For physical problems -- eyes and color, I want to keep this version and not do any updates ever to it. I don't know if it is a firefox or linux issue, but nothing seems to work. It should not be rocket scientist enabled. :P This is what I have tried: Update Manager and added to ignore package --firef0x* Fully removed all traces of firefox and reinstalled 3.6.28 In firefox, set the upgrade options (3) of them to unselected and saved. Scanned computer for firef* to insure all traces were removed, to include /usr/bin/firefox. Using Mint Linux 9, otherwise fully upgraded for packages. That's the main things I've done. My major issues is the later versions of that software are almost impossible for me to see.

  I have been looking around and have not found a good answer to my question. I currently have php 5.3.3 installed via yum on my centos 6.3 server. I need to upgrade to php 5.10 or later. It is my understanding that you need to find the correct mysql and apache packages that fit with the php install. Can someone please point me in the direction of a an update guide? Btw I am not looking for "yum update httpd php5" this gets me the old 5.3.3 version. Thanks, Kevin.

• Any Windows based OpenID servers out there? [closed]

  I've been looking to setup an OpenID server for a special project, but haven't found any workable OpenID server software packages. Originally was looking for a *nix solution, and found several, but they all had some kind of issue. So far I've tried JOIDS, community-id, and a couple others I unfortunately can't remember the names of. I've also come to the conclusion that even if I had managed to get one of those going that the management/upgrade cycles would have placed undue burden on the company (only a couple part time sysadmins with *nix knowledge, the day to day people are primarily Windows). So, I'm hoping that there's a Windows one out that will be functional that someone knows about and will be easy for a minimal support environment...

• How to set up strongswan or openswan for pure IPSEC with iPhone client?

  I'm having trouble finding concrete, up-to-date information for how to set up strongswan or openswan to be used by the iphone's VPN client. My server is behind a budget linksys NAT router. I found this, but it mentions a whole bunch of .pem files with no reference for how to create them. Unfortunately, the "fine" manuals for both packages were quite inscrutable and unfriendly to a novice. I've set up OpenVPN before and managed to get serviceable results very quickly, but after a day and a half of reading out of date docs, I barely even know where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Now the companies say it is technically not possible to direct more than one domain to the hosting package and i would need to buy multiple hosting packages . • How to collect figures of traffic used per-host, broken up by time and destination?

  We have a relatively small network, all PSs in one subnet. One PC with two NICs and pfSense installed works as a firewall/router. There is an OpenVPN tunnel to a remote location, created as a site-to-site connection to another pfSense box there. I have an assignment to capture, store and show (via a web interface) information on traffic generated (both incoming and outcoming) by each host on our subnet and present it in several views: megabytes per calendar hours / days / months / years (that is, not just "one month back", but "in Dec 2010" and so on); megabytes per destination: VPN to remote location / other destinations / Google Apps servers. I tried the software packages in pfSense that offer traffic montoring - but it seems they don't store the information fixed by months, instead showing the amounts of traffic generated in periods (days/months/etc) calculated from the present moment. I'm also interested in understanding what would be the best way for me to break up traffic by hosts and destinations. I'm open to all suggestions, even if they mean that I will have to understand something new to me.

• Install package from debian stable unavailable in testing/unstable repositories

  I'm currently running Debian testing and would like to install a package only available in the stable repositories. (I'm surprised I haven't come across this issue before) I could download the .deb directly and use dpkg to manually install it, but installing packages from one release into another is usually frowned upon. What's the best course of action? EDIT: Zoredache is right, I didn't realize this package has been removed from future versions of Debian as it no longer has a maintainer. It is of course, also pointed out by Zoredache, important to find out why a particular package has been removed before attempting to install it. I've altered the title slightly to reflect the actual issue.

• VPS stops responding every now and again

  I have a Linode vps that I use to host some of my websites on. It's Ubuntu based and it's up to date in terms of all packages. I don't have any cron jobs scheduled or any automatic processes. I host a few (up to date) wordpress blogs there that have very little traffic altogether. Every day (at a different time) my server stops responding, I can't SSH to it, web access is getting timed out and it just dies until I reboot it through the Linode manager. On the linode dashboard I can see that the CPU is not very high (2-3%) Incoming/Outgoing traffic is on 0 and the IO count has a spike just before the server stops responding (SWAP IO is at 2k and IO Rate is at 5k). When I reboot the server everything is just fine. I'm trying to figure out a way to analyze what's going on at these random times where the server freezes up. How can I determine the problem?
