• IIS6 Log time recording problems

  On three separate occasions on two separate servers at nearly the same times, 6.9 hours seemingly went by without any data being written to the IIS logs, but, on closer inspection, it appears that it was all recorded all at once. Here's the facts as I know them: Windows Server 2003 R2 w/ IIS6 Logging using GMT, server local time GMT-7. Application was still operating and I have SQL data to prove that Time gaps appear in log file, not across two # headers appear at gap Load balancer pings every 30 seconds No caching Here's info on a particular case: an entry appears for 2009-09-21 18:09:27 then #headers the next entry is for 2009-09-22 01:21:54, and so are the next 1600 entries in this log file and 370 in the next log file. about half of the ~2000 entries on 2009-09-22 01:21:54 are load balancer pings (est. at 2/min for 6.9hrs = 828 pings) then entries are recorded as normal. I believe that these events may coincide with me deploying an ASP.NET application update into those machines. Also note that /ping.aspx returned 404 then switched to 200 just as the problem started. I rename the "I'm alive page" so the load balancer stops sending requests to the server while I'm working on it. What you see here is me renaming it back so the load balancer will use the server. So, this problem definitely coincides with me re-enabling the server. Any ideas?

• Email a very large list of WordPress subscribers = fail (every single time)

  I have tried using a number of plugins to email my 40,000 registered users on my WordPress-powered site, to no avail. I have tried Subscribe2 (seems to send some, but I have no idea how many) as well as a few Newsletter plugins. I either run out of memory trying to add 40K entries to the mail queue, or I error out trying to add 40K emails in the BCC of the email being sent. Is there anyone out there with a large subscriber-base that has found a successful solution? If so, please share.

• AbcPDF renders the same page multiple times

  I need to retrieve several pages and output this in a PDF document. I have the following page structure: Page 1 Sub 1 Sub 2 Sub 3 On page one, I have a link which executes the below code. What it does, is to retrieve child pages (one level) and put them in a page collection. Then I loop trough the page collection and retrieve each sub pages URL. This works. I've tested and seen that it retrieves 3 different URL's. The problem is that my PDF gets three pages of Page 1. It does not render Sub 1 to 3. Why isn't docID = document.AddImageUrl(pageLink) retrieving the pages? Websupergoo refers to a caching problem which may occur. But their solution did not help me. Now: I have the following problem:] I am loading a div element, which class always is ".gallery" from a couple of pages (in this example "the page index.php?page=orange") into another page's div (in this case with the ID "orange") using the following code: $("#orange").load("http://example.com/index.php?page=orange .gallery"); Each div.gallery I load in, is a set of a few images. Between them, you can switch (there are "previous"- and "next"-links in ".imgnavi"). $(".imgnavi a").live("click", function(ev) { ev.preventDefault(); ev.stopPropagation(); $(".gallery").load($(this).attr("href")); return false; }) What happens now: Loading the different div.gallery into the new page is no problem, but as soon as I start to navigate inside those divs (each div is a little gallery, where you can switch between images), the div.gallery I am switching in is suddenly loaded into EVERY other div.gallery in the document! How do I prevent that?

  Another wonderful first email of the year… announcing that I’ve just been re-awarded Most Valuable Professional (MVP) by Microsoft for Silverlight. This is my 5th year as an MVP in a row and I am still very honoured and excited! In 2010 I had the pleasure to be involved in many community events around Silverlight, speaking at Microsoft conferences and user groups (doing the launch of the Vancouver Silverlight User Group was fun!), as well as taking part in worldwide conference like MIX Las Vegas and the MVP Summit in Redmond. Also I did new kind of activities in 2010: I wrote questions for the first Microsoft Silverlight certification exam (70-506), and I was Technical reviewer of 3 Silverlight books. I finally started to share more on Twitter @LaurentDuveau. In 2010 the content of this blog was mostly about Silverlight, I expect it to be the same in 2011, plus a touch of Windows Phone as well. I already know that 2011 will be hell of a good year.. I’ll be at the next MVP Summit in Seattle, also speaker at DevTeach which comes back to Montreal (at last!) and have some nice Silverlight trainings plans for France and Tunisia. More than that, my business RunAtServer is healthy (proud of my team!) and I have insane news and a very big surprise coming on that front.... stay tuned! Happy New Year!

• GLSL compile error when accessing an array with compile-time constant index

  I have this shader that works well on my computer (using an ATI HD 5700). I have a loop iterating between two constant values, which is, afaik, acceptable in a glsl shader. I write stuff in two arrays in this loop. #define NB_POINT_LIGHT 2 ... varying vec3 vVertToLight[NB_POINT_LIGHT]; varying vec3 vVertToLightWS[NB_POINT_LIGHT]; ... void main() { ... for (int i = 0; i < NB_POINT_LIGHT; ++i) { if (bPointLightUse[i]) { vVertToLight[i] = ConvertToTangentSpace(ShPointLightData[i].Position - WorldPos.xyz); vVertToLightWS[i] = ShPointLightData[i].Position - WorldPos.xyz; } } ... } I tried my program on another computer equipped with an nVidia GTX 560 Ti, and it fails to compile my shader. I get the following errors (94 and 95 are the lines of the two affectations) when calling glLinkProgram: Vertex info ----------- 0(94) : error C5025: lvalue in assignment too complex 0(95) : error C5025: lvalue in assignment too complex I think my code is valid, I don't know if this comes from a compiler bug, a conversion of my shader to another format from the compiler (nvidia looks to convert it to CG), or if I just missed something. I already tried to remove the if (bPointLightUse[i]) statement and I still have the same error. • Start/Stop Window Service from ASP.NET page

  Last week, I needed to complete one task on which I am going to blog about in this entry. The task is "Create a control panel like webpage to control (Start/Stop) Window Services which are part of my solution installed on computer where the main application is hosted". Here are the important points to accomplish:[1] You need to add System.ServiceProcess reference in your application. This namespace holds ServiceController Class to access the window service.[2] You need to check the status of the window services before you explicitly start or stop it.[3] By default, IIS application runs under ASP.NET account which doesn't have access rights permission to window service. So, Very Important part of the solution is: Impersonation. You need to impersonate the application/part of the code with the User Credentials which is having proper rights and permission to access the window service. If you try to access window service it will generate "access denied" error.The alternatives are: You can either impersonate whole application by adding Identity tag in web.cofig as:        <identity impersonate="true" userName="" password=""/>This tag will be under System.Web section. the "userName" and "password" will be the credentials of the user which is having rights to access the window service. But, this would not be a wise and good solution; because you may not impersonate whole website like this just to have access window service (which is going to be a small part of code).Second alternative is: Only impersonate part of code where you need to access the window service to start or stop it. I opted this one. But, to be fair; I am really unaware of the code part for impersonation. So, I just googled it and injected the code in my solution in a separate class file named as "Impersonate" with required static methods. In Impersonate class; impersonateValidUser() is the method to impersonate a part of code and undoImpersonation() is the method to undo the impersonation. Below is one example:  You need to provide domain name (which is "." if you are working on your home computer), username and password of appropriate user to impersonate.[4] Here, it is very important to note that: You need to have to store the Access Credentials (username and password) which you are going to user for impersonation; to some secured and encrypted format. I have used Machinekey Encryption to store the value encrypted value inside database.[5] So now; The real part is to start or stop a window service. You are almost done; because ServiceController class has simple Start() and Stop() methods to start or stop a window service. A ServiceController class has parametrized constructor that takes name of the service as parameter.Code to Start the window service: Code to Stop the window service: Isn't that too easy! ServiceController made it easy :) I have attached a working example with this post here to start/stop "SQLBrowser" service where you need to provide proper credentials who have permission to access to window service.  hope it would helps./.

• Detecting Idle Time with Global Mouse and Keyboard Hooks in WPF

  Years and years ago I wrote this blog post about detecting if the user was idle or active at the keyboard (and mouse) using a global hook. Well that code was for .NET 2.0 and Windows Forms and for some reason I wanted to try the same in WPF and noticed that a few things around the keyboard and mouse hooks didn’t work as expected in the WPF environment. So I had to change a few things and here’s the code for it, working in .NET 4. I took the liberty and refactored a few things while at it and here’s the code now. • Wordpress Multisite- How to restrict a non-wordpress page only to one domain

  I am running three blogs from a wordpress multisite. Currently, I am developing a separate, non wordpress application. I want to link this application with blog1. I put the application in the subfoler of my root directory (The Wordpress multisite is installed in the root). I linked the application in the menu of blog1. So far so good. But, it is possible to access the application from all the three blogs. I want the application to be accessible only from blog1-domain/my-app/ but when I tried blog2-domain/my-app, it just opened normally. Generally, the application is accessible from all the three domains followed by /my-app. I don't think it is proper to go this way. Then, what can I do to restrict my app to be accessible only from a my blog1-domain/my-app ? Or am I not using a good blog structure?. I am open to all kind of suggestions. Thank you for your help.

• Multi page forms on ASP.NET MVC

  Hi, I have decided to use ASP.NET MVC to develop multi page (registration) forms in asp.net. There will be two buttons on each page that allows the user to navigate to the previous and next page. When the user navigates back to a page they recently filled out, the data should be displayed to them. I understand ASP.NET MVC should remain stateless but how should I maintain page information when the user navigates back and forth. Should I? Save the information to a database and retrieve information for each page change? save information to the session? Load all the fields and display only whats's needed with javascript? This registration form is going to be used in multiple sites but with different sets of questions (Some may be the same). IF performance is a main concern, should I avoid generating these forms dynamically? Jay

  Is it possible to load an external HTML file into a variable and then use this variable to load the SimpleModal dialog? If there's a 3rd solution that's better than these approaches, please share. PS: sadly it also has to work perfectly in IE6.

  I have implement Form Authentication <location path="Admin"> <system.web> <authorization> <deny users="?"/> <allow roles="Admin" /> <deny roles="systemAdmin"/> </authorization> </system.web> </location> Since in above mentioned rights, Admin can have access to Admin folder and systemAdmin can't have. I have make custom Accessdenied page where I am showing message to user he has not permission to access this page Now the issue is, If systemAdmin try to hit Admin folder page, he will be redirected to AccessDenied.apsx page. (please Note: both user are authenticated, 1 user have permission to some folder and other user have permission to other folder. I don't want to put check in each page) where to specify accessdenied page redirection ? Thanks

• dojo.require() prevents Firefox from rendering the page

  Im experiencing strange behavior with Firefox and Dojo. I have a html page with these lines in the <head> section: ... <script type="text/javascript" src="dojo.js" djconfig="parseOnLoad: true, locale: 'de'"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> dojo.require("dojo.number"); </script> ... Sometimes the page loads normally. But sometimes it won't. Firefox will fetch the whole html page but not render it. I see only a gray window. After some experiments I figured out that the rendering problem has something to do with the load time of the html. Firefox starts evaluating the html page while loading it. If the page takes too long to load the above javascript will be executed BEFORE the html finishes loading. If this happens I'll get the gray window. Advising Firefox to show me the source code of the page will display the correct complete html code. BUT: if I save the page to disk (File-Save Page As...) the html code will be truncated and the above part will look like this: ... <script type="text/javascript" src="dojo.js" djconfig="parseOnLoad: true, locale: 'de'"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> dojo.require("dojo.number"); </script></head><body></body></html> This explains why I get to see a gray area. But why does this code appear there? I assume the require() method of Dojo does something "evil". But I can't figure out what. There is no write.document("</head><body></body></html>"); in the Dojo code. I checked for it. The problem would be fixed, if I'd place the dojo.require("dojo.number"); statement in the window.load event: <script type="text/javascript"> window.load=function() { dojo.require("dojo.number"); } </script> But I'm curious why this happens. Is there a Javasctript function which forces Firefox to stop evaluating the page? Does Dojo do somethig "bad"? Can anyone explain this behavior to me? EDIT: Dojo 1.3.1, no JS errors or warnings.

• Doing Time Limited Flight Recordings Using Start Up Parameters

  Just like with the old JRockit Runtime Analyzer, it is possible to start up recordings using command line parameters to JRockit. The parameter is called -XX:StartFlightRecording in R28. Below is an example that starts a flight recording half a minute after the JVM has been started. The recording will last for a minute. The name when viewing the ongoing recordings will be MyRecording, and the resulting file will be written to C:\tmp\myrecording.jfr. The recording will use the settings in jre\lib\jfr\profile.jfs. -XX:StartFlightRecording=delay=30s,duration=60s,name=MyRecording,filename=C:\tmp\myrecording.jfr,settings=profile For more information, see the JRockit R28 command line parameter documentation.
