• Apache Tomcat under Windows: Changing webapps default directory

  I am deploying my Java application with Ant. Unfortunately my test deployment on the local machine doesn't work because of Vista. The Program Files directionaries are protected and i don't want to start Ant or Eclipse as an Admin. So i had the idea to move my webapps folder to a workspace subfolder, so i can use relative paths in Ant as well. The solutions seems to be to modify the Host element in the server.xml. With Linux it isn't such a deal: <Host name="localhost" appBase="/path/to/webapps" unpackWARs="true" autoDeploy="true" xmlValidation="false" xmlNamespaceAware="false"> But with Windows i don't get it right. • Using embedded standard HTML forms with ASP.NET

  I have a standard aspx page with which I need to add another standard HTML form into and have it submit to another location (external site), however whenever I press the submit button the page seems to do a post back rather than using the sub-forms action url. A mock up of what the form relationships is below. • Make WebStart Java desktop application to start on system startup on Windows and Mac

  I developed small cross-platform (Windows and Mac) SWT desktop application. It is distributed with WebStart. So far so good, everything works. I've got a new requirement to make my app start on system startup (with no user interaction). What is the best way to accomplish that? In JNLP file I've got this: <shortcut online="false"> <desktop/> <menu submenu="CompanyName"/> </shortcut> On Windows WebStart creates a desktop link [app_name].lnk and it points to javaws.exe and then some Java cache file as a parameter with funny name like ..\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\4\2c0a6a781-213476. I can possibly programmatically find that link on user's machine by name... erm... and then copy it into user's Startup folder. I can see a problem here though as user can disable WebStart desktop shortcut creation option all together. On Mac WebStart pops up a dialog to prompt user for the location where to create an [app_name].app (user is allowed to change link name there!) file that launches an application. On Mac I don't event know where the Startup folder is located (and it seems to be much more complex there). Is there Java library out there that abstracts start app on system startup concept on different platforms as SWT does for GUI abstraction?

• Adobe AIR non-Administrator application installation/upgrade on Windows

  Is there any way to allow non-Administrator users to install, upgrade or uninstall an Adobe AIR application on Windows? I've made an Adobe AIR application and packaged it as a .air package using the standard AIR mechanism for creating deployment packages. If a normal or Power user tries to install this AIR application, the Application Event Log shows an error saying administrative rights are required. And even if the user elevates during installation, administrative rights are still required for an upgrade using the automated AIR upgrade system (since an upgrade is essentially, behind the scenes, an uninstallation of a .msi package followed by an installation of another .msi package). Is there any way around this? What I've tried so far is: Using the Group Policy editor, setting Windows Installer to elevate during installations. Doesn't work, since AIR attempts a "for all users" installation. Specifying My Documents as the installation directory. Doesn't work, since AIR attempts a "for all users" installation. Giving the user Modify access to the Program Files folder where the application would usually reside. Doesn't work, since this isn't a file permissions issue. Making the user a Power User. Doesn't work, since AIR attempts a "for all users" installation. I'm guessing that both installing and upgrading would work fine for a user if the AIR installer would attempt to make an "only for me" application installation instead of a "for all users" installation, and the user was a Power User, and possibly the application was installed to My Documents I'm also guessing that this problem doesn't exist on OSX and Linux, since they have more intuitive concepts for per-user application installations.

  I have been working towards converting one of our applications to be threadsafe. When testing on the local dev app server everything is working as expected. However, upon deployment of the application it seems that Cookies are not being written correctly? • Switching from Sourcesafe - What to look for in a product

  We're looking to move off of sourcesafe and on to a more robust source control system for our .Net apps. We're also looking for scripted/automated deployments. I'm a .Net developer (web and winforms). However, most of our development staff is RPG for the IBM iSeries and the devs use Aldon's LMI for source control and deployment. Our manager would prefer to stick with Aldon so all of our products are in the same system. However, I don't have experience with Aldon's products on the .Net side. I've used TFS and Subversion with Tortoise a bit, but not enough to recommend one or the other, especially in comparison to Aldon's product. Does anybody have experience with Aldon's products? If so, thoughts please? Also, other than the obvious things source control systems do, are there things I should avoid or are there must haves? I'm open to any system. A bit of background, I'm the only .Net dev in our company but I let operations do the deployments. I do want the ability to support concurrent checkouts if we hire a new dev.

• Unable to create website error (NEW)

  I copied my ClickOnce deployment to my C:/Inetpub/ folder on my webserver and I deleted my Virtual directory. I deleted the WpfApplication1 folder beneath wwwroot in Win Explorer. Then I turned on Web Sharing for this folder. Then I viewed my IIS Manager and this new Share name appeared under wwwroot. So now under Inetpub folder on my web server I have the following directory path: C:\Inetpub\WpfApplication1\ with contents: Application Files publish.htm setup.exe WpfApplication1.application Next, I remapped both the publishing and installation URL's for the project to http://myserver/WpfApplication1/ And I clicked Publish Now. But after I performed a Publish Now operation, I got the following error on my development server (D610-M): Error 1 Failed to connect to 'http://myserver/WpfApplication1/' with the following error: Unable to create the Web site 'http://myserver/WpfApplication1/'. The Web server does not appear to have any authentication methods enabled. It asked for user authentication, but did not send a WWW-Authenticate header. 1 1 WpfApplication1 On my webserver, when I click Browse from the IIS Manager on the WpfApplication1 directory, it shows me the Install page. But after I click the Browse button, it returns an error which says: The remote name could not be resolved: 'd610-m' (D610-M is the name of my development server). How do I fix this?

• Can nginx be used as a reverse proxy for a backend websocket server?

  We're working on a Ruby on Rails app that needs to take advantage of html5 websockets. At the moment, we have two separate "servers" so to speak: our main app running on nginx+passenger, and a separate server using Pratik Naik's Cramp framework (which is running on Thin) to handle the websocket connections. Ideally, when it comes time for deployment, we'd have the rails app running on nginx+passenger, and the websocket server would be proxied behind nginx, so we wouldn't need to have the websocket server running on a different port. Problem is, in this setup it seems that nginx is closing the connections to Thin too early. The connection is successfully established to the Thin server, then immediately closed with a 200 response code. Our guess is that nginx doesn't realize that the client is trying to establish a long-running connection for websocket traffic. Admittedly, I'm not all that savvy with nginx config, so, is it even possible to configure nginx to act as a reverse proxy for a websocket server? Or do I have to wait for nginx to offer support for the new websocket handshake stuff? Assuming that having both the app server and the websocket server listening on port 80 is a requirement, might that mean I have to have Thin running on a separate server without nginx in front for now?   Hi All, I am working on a web application which has got good amount of static or pre-login pages. These pages can have some simple forms as well where we would like to capture the visitor's details. Post login, I have got my main application. I am confused about the development and deployment architecture of my application. Post login part of my application has a release cycle of 1-2 months while pre-login pages are to be updated on a weekly basis. It is difficult to make a release of pre-login pages as the overall war also contains post-login application & which sometimes is not release ready. Currently, I have got both these parts bundled in the single war project. Please help me by letting me know the best practices whereby I can achieve following: Manage the releases of these two parts independently. I am using Maven. So is there a way I can share the resources, such as CSS, images etc between these two parts. Header and footer of my application is going to be same on pre-login & post-login pages. I was thinking of deploying these apps as two war files in my tomcat container. But then how will I manage the common resources like Css, images etc. Rgds Vijay

  I have a LINQ query that searches for multiple keywords on multiple columns. The intention is that the user can search for multiple keywords and it will search for the keywords on every property in my Media entity. Here is a simplified example: var result = repository.GetAll<Media>().Where(x => x.Title.Contains("Apples") || x.Description.Contains("Apples") || x.Tags.Contains("Apples") || x.Title.Contains("Oranges") || x.Description.Contains("Oranges") || x.Tags.Contains("Oranges") || x.Title.Contains("Pears") || x.Description.Contains("Pears") || x.Tags.Contains("Pears") ); In other words, I want to search for the keywords Apples, Oranges, and Pears on the columns Title, Description, and Tags.   I am working on legacy project. Now the situation demands project to be divided into parts. What strategy I should follow to do this task. Description: The legacy project (A) is fully functional web application with almost well defined layers. But now i need to extend the project to a further enhancement. This project usage maven as build tool. But it is used only for dependency managements only. (project exported to war form inside eclipse). The new enhancement needs me to add new data table, new UI(jsp, css, js and images). What should be my strategy to enhance to application. My proposed design. I am planing to create two new projects Project B : Main Enhancement works will done in this project. Will have all layers like service layer, dao layer and UI layer in itself. And will be a web application in itself. Project C : Extract some common model and service code form project-A and create this project. This project will be added as dependency to both the projects. If my this approach is okay! Then i presume there will be problem be problem in deployment. These two projects will demand to deploy separately(currently tomcat is used). But I must deploy these two projects as one war. So, i need to have a plan to change the web.xml entries to have configurations for both projects. This will comes with some more complexities with project. What should be my design for the project? Does my plan sounds good.

  What command line tool can I use to automatically insert mtimes into urls in my css files for the purposes of breaking the cache? /* before */ .example { background: url(example.jpg); } /* after */ .example { background: url(example.jpg?1271298451); } Also, I would like this tool to spit out the latest mtime as the css files mtime. (If the css file is still cached then the new urls will not get to the client.) In searching the web, I have found very few tools that can do this. I am even considering rolling my own, but have found very little in the way of css parsers that are actively maintained. A candidate should be: fast (I don't want to wait 30 seconds on deployment) command line accessible (something like "cat foo.css bar.css | cssmtime out.css") What I've found so Far yui compressor - initially I thought I would extend the yui compressor to do this, but found that it is implemented as a bunch of regex's and not a parser. csstidy - last release was in 2007 and development has been suspended, but does have an option for inserting mtimes (also written in php, something I have no experience in) cssutils - python sac implementation - seems to be actively maintained, but also seems like overkill for my needs. Also, written in python which I have experience with csspool - ruby sac implementation - I don't know much ruby, but would like to learn other sac implementations - There are several java implementations, and a c implementation neither of which I know much about What's your experience? Have you used any of these libraries? Was the experience positive? Would you recommend I go with them for my purposes?

• Rails 3 with Ruby 1.9.1 on Heroku

  I've decided that I am going to man-up and start using Rails 3 from now on but the following note found here puts me off a bit: Note that Ruby 1.8.7 has marshaling bugs that crash both Rails 2.3.x and Rails 3.0.0. Ruby 1.9.1 outright segfaults on Rails 3.0.0, so if you want to use Rails 3 with 1.9.x, jump on 1.9.2 trunk for smooth sailing. I use Heroku for my deployment and as far as I am aware they do not plan to add 1.9.2 to the stack until it's stable (which might be in August) so I was thinking of doing it with 1.9.1. and seeing what happens. I know that there is a 3rd beta release now but the comments on the blog imply that it's still a little bit buggy. Is DHH inferring that you shouldn't touch Rails 3 at all if you are on 1.9.1? What are other Heroku-ists doing regarding Rails 3? Anyone using it for any production apps? I guess I'll only know once I've tried but any advice would be nice.

• Using hg repository as web site

  This is somewhat related to my security question here. Is it a bad idea to use an hg / mercurial repository for a live website? If so, why? Furthermore, we have dev, test and production installations of our website, like dev.example.com, test.example.com and www.example.com. If it's a bad idea to use a repository for a live/production website, would it be OK to use an hg repository for the dev and test sites? I'm also concerned about ease of deployment. We have technical and less technical co-workers who will be working with the site. The technical guys (software engineers) won't have any problem working with the command line or TortoiseHG. I'm more concerned about the less technical guys (web designers). They won't be comfortable working on the command line, and may even find TortoiseHG daunting. These guys mostly upload .css files and images to the server. I'd like for these files (at least the .css files) to be under version control, but I want this to be as transparent as possible for the non technical guys. What's the best way to achieve this? Edit: Our 'site' is actually a multi-site CMS setup with a main repository and several subrepositories. Mock-up of the repository structure: /root [main repository containing core files and subrepositories] /modules [modules subrepository] /sites/global [subrepository for global .css and .php files] /sites/site1 [site1 subrepository] ... /sites/siteN [siteN subrepository] Software engineers would work in the root, modules and sites/global repositories. Less technical guys (web designers) would work only in the site1 ... siteN subrepositories.

  VS 2008 / VB.Net / WinForms I have an application setting (Settings.settings) for a project and I am using Click Once deployment. I used the VS Editor to create the setting and I can see the setting in the app.config file <applicationSettings> <MyApp.Win.My.MySettings> <setting name="MySetting" serializeAs="String"> <value>False</value> </setting> </MyApp.ArtTracker.Win.My.MySettings> </applicationSettings> I would like to update this setting after the application is compiled. The setting is for testing purposes only. If I change the xxx.config.deploy and I reinstall the app with click once. The new setting value doesn't change (seems to be cached somewhere). Even if I change in my local pc the setting seems to be cached somewhere. If I go in VS it asks me to Re-Sync the settings. But I need to do this after the application is compiled. • Development environment for ASP.NET with EpiServer

  At our company we are going to develop more for the Windows platform than we have done up until now. As this scale of Windows development is new to us it would be nice with some feedback from experienced developers. Requirements we have: 5 developers from the beginning. 15 developers a year from now. All developers should be able to develop at the same time. Be able to develop solution for ASP.NET and EpiServer 5. Our idea: A shared server which developers use for development through Terminal Services. SQL Server Express. Start with some free express edition of Visual Studio, upgrade to a commercial version if we need the additional features. Use IIS and not the web server built into Visual Studio. Questions: Are we on the right track? In terms of license costs the above should be cheapest, right? What do you think about multiple developers doing development using a shared TS-server? Do you know of any company which has a similar development environment? Are we going to miss some features of the full Visual Studio version immediately? Is using Express version a bad choice? Is IIS the best choice? If use IIS the developers may use the same port for deployment. If we use the built in web server each one has to set their own port as we're sharing a machine. Comment answer: We are thinking about a shared server as it will most likely decrease the license costs. So it's purely a cost issue. We are using CVS for version control. Our situation is that we develop on Mac and Linux, that's why buying 1 server license + Visual Studio licenses seems to be a cost effective way of starting this type of development.

• sqlite3 JOIN, GROUP_CONCAT using distinct with custom separator

  Given a table of "events" where each event may be associated with zero or more "speakers" and zero or more "terms", those records associated with the events through join tables, I need to produce a table of all events with a column in each row which represents the list of "speaker_names" and "term_names" associated with each event. However, when I run my query, I have duplication in the speaker_names and term_names values, since the join tables produce a row per association for each of the speakers and terms of the events: 1|Soccer|Bobby|Ball 2|Baseball|Bobby - Bobby - Bobby|Ball - Bat - Helmets 3|Football|Bobby - Jane - Bobby - Jane|Ball - Ball - Helmets - Helmets The group_concat aggregate function has the ability to use 'distinct', which removes the duplication, though sadly it does not support that alongside the custom separator, which I really need. I am left with these results: 1|Soccer|Bobby|Ball 2|Baseball|Bobby|Ball,Bat,Helmets 3|Football|Bobby,Jane|Ball,Helmets My question is this: Is there a way I can form the query or change the data structures in order to get my desired results? Keep in mind this is a sqlite3 query I need, and I cannot add custom C aggregate functions, as this is for an Android deployment. • Deploying .NET COM dll, getting error (0x80070002)

  I have a .NET COM assembly I am attempting to deploy to a web server (IIS 6 Win 2003). We have successfully deployed this assembly to our test environment, but the production environment is not working. The assembly is being called from a classic ASP page. Every time that page tries to initialize the assembly with “Set LTMRender = CreateObject("LTMRender.Render")”, I get an error “Error Type:, (0x80070002)”. This error seems to indicate a permission denied, or file not found type problem. I created a test app to see if the assembly works outside of the web page. The .exe initializes the assembly, and then makes a call designed to fail which in turn causes the assembly to produce a log file. It works if I run the .exe in the same folder as the assembly, but fails if I run it elsewhere. For some reason, the assembly is not accessible from outside it’s folder. I can’t figure out why this won’t work. Things I have confirmed: The deployment folder has adequate permissions. We have confirmed that the folder the assembly in installed in has the correct permissions for all the necessary user accounts. The Assembly is signed with a strong name, and was registered with regasm.exe C:_WebSites\LTMRender\LTMRender.dll /codebase /tlb:C:_WebSites\LTMRender\LTMRender.tlb. Regasm reported success. The Assembly has the attribute and relevant GUID’s set correctly. Any tips? EDIT We ran filemon against my testapp.exe and it seems to have indicated what the problem is. When testapp.exe runs in D:_websites\DocWebV2\ or D:_websites\DocWebV2\ LTMRender\ folder, it succeeds and filemon is showing D:_websites\DocWebV2\LTMRender\pinPDF.dll SUCCESS If I run my testapp.exe in the D:_websites\DocWebV2\Client – where my asp pages run, it shows D:_websites\DocWebV2\pinPDF.dll NAME NOT FOUND and then D:_websites\DocWebV2\pinPDF\pinPDF.dll FILE NOT FOUND I’m not sure why it is not looking in the correct folder if it’s under this particular folder only.

• Integrating ASP.NET MVC 2 with classic ASP

  I'm in the process of moving a large classic ASP application to ASP.NET MVC 2. Questions: My question is about project organization. I would prefer to not mix the MVC code with the ASP code in the same VS project. I'd like to have an MVC WAP with areas that match the parts of the website that I'm migrating. For instance, the old site has a folder /products/default.asp..... /products/productName/default.asp etc. In the MVC WAP, I'd like to have an area called "products", which I could then, either through a rewrite, routing, or preferably through some IIS configuration, point the "products" folder on the ASP site to. In this way, I could gradually move root folders from the ASP site to the MVC application. However, if I create the MVC WAP in a virtual folder, then my routes wind up looking like http://localhost/virtualFolder/products instead of http://localhost/products Any suggestions on how to conquer this? I know that, during deployment, I could deploy the MVC WAP into the root of the ASP site, but this doesn't help with debugging.

• How to access application.xml file of an EAR deployed to IBM WebSphere 6.1

  I am deploying an EAR file to the IBM WebSpehre server 6.1 - I want to be able to access the EAR application name which is stored in the deployment file under 'display-name'. Looking through stack overflow posts on related subjects, I've been able to gather that this is possible via the Java MBean API - or IBM's WAS API - Problem is I cannot find a place where these API lists are summarized, i.e. cannot figure out which one to begin looking at. I could hardcode the WAS install location and find the file by looking in the 'installedApps' directory, but this is not dynamic. Does anyone have any experience working with these APIs? Any other way to dynamically find the deployed EAR's display name? EDIT - I should add that the reason I would like this information is to dynamically load our properties files - that are named by the following convention "EARAppName.properties" - so you see there IS a reasonable 'rationale' behind desiring this information in my application EDIT 2 - I should also note that this app will always be deployed on a WAS - but in the case that it isnt, a generic non-proprietary solution would be preferred, but not necessary at this moment. EDIT 3 - What I want to accomplish: Is there a way to dynamically find the deployed EAR's display name from within the application code?

• how to push different local git branches to heroku/master

  Heroku has a policy of ignoring all branches but 'master'. While I'm sure Heroku's designers have excellent reasons for for this policy (I'm guessing for storage and performance optimization), the consequence to me as a developer is that whatever local topic branch I may be working on, I would like an easy way to switch Heroku's master to that local topic branch and do a "git push heroku -f" to over-write master on Heroku. What I got from reading the "Pushing Refspecs" section of http://progit.org/book/ch9-5.html is git push -f heroku local-topic-branch:refs/heads/master What I'd really like is a way to set this up in the config file so that "git push heroku" always does the above, replacing local-topic-branch with the name of whatever my current branch happens to be. If anyone knows how to accomplish that, please let me know! The caveat for this, of course, is that this is only sensible if I am the only one who can push to that Heroku app/repository. A test or QA team might manage such a repository to try out different candidate branches, but they would have to coordinate so that they all agree on what branch they are pushing to it on any given day. Needless to say, it would also be a very good idea to have a separate remote repository (like Github) without this restriction for backing everything up to. I'd call that one "origin" and use "heroku" for Heroku so that "git push" always backs up everything to origin, and "git push heroku" pushes whatever branch I'm currently on to Heroku's master branch, overwriting it if necessary. Can anybody tell me if this would work? [remote "heroku"] url = [email protected]:my-app.git push = +refs/heads/*:refs/heads/master I'd like to hear from someone more experienced before I begin to experiment, although I suppose I could create a dummy app on Heroku and experiment with that. As for fetching, I don't really care if the Heroku repository is write-only. I still have a separate repository, like Github, for backup and cloning of all my work.
