• How can I share a Windows 7 library with anonymous access without using a Homegroup?

  The "homegroup" feature is useless, because it requires a password, and therefore doesn't support anonymous, no-hassle access to shares from devices such as my Sony Bravia TV and non-Windows7 machines. So I turned off homegroup and reverted to the standard shared folders protocol. I'd like to share my Music "Library", so I can play files from my TV through the Surround Sound System, but there seems to be no option to share a library folder other than through a homegroup. I don't want to have to individually share the folders that belong to the library, because that would defeat the purposes of the library, which is to manage which folders are included in the library while also providing an easily accessible view of them all at once. Does anyone know how to share a Windows 7 library without that useless homegroup feature?

AGDLP principle said that I should assign permissions on the above folders to DL-Groups. Let's say I have a G-Group of users, G-Accounting-Payable, containing users that have access to the D:\Acctg\Payable folder. The way I see it, I have two strategies: - Strategy 1 Create three DL-Groups and assign them permissions: DL-D-Acctg_T -- allowed traversal of D:\Acctg folder DL-D-Acctg-Pay_LF -- allowed listing of D:\Acctg\Payable folder contents DL-D-Acctg-Pay__RW -- allowed full permissions to the contents of D:\Acctg\Payable folder Add G-Accounting-Payable as member to all the above DL-Groups - Strategy 2 Create just one DL-Group DL-D-Acctg-Pay__RW, and assign it the proper permissions for each level of the folder.   In Windows 7, if you press the Windows key and type the name of a folder, and the folder shows up among the Start menu search results. In Windows 8, if you do the same thing, no folders are listed. The Files filter shows files with matching names, but no folders. I realize that you can still search for folders from the Windows Explorer search box, but navigating that way is a bit slow and clumsy. Is there a quicker way, in particular a way to search directly from the Windows 8 Start screen?

  OSX 10.6.3 terminal.app Am a pretty dedicated screen user. Terminal.app line buffer and/or scroll does not seem to work for me. That is while in screen anything that goes past the top of the frame is gone, can't scroll back to. This seems to work ok in other terminal apps gnome, cygwin. • Vim lint check - only show message if there's an error

  I have this line in my .vimrc, which means "when I save a .rb file, run it through ruby -c" (the ruby interpreter's error checking). autocmd BufWritePost *.rb !ruby -c <afile> When I save that file, I always see output at the bottom of the screen, so I get used to it and start ignoring it. What I want is to only see output if there are errors. I can see that when there are errors, after it says what they are, at the bottom, it says "shell returned 1." How can I modify this line so that it only shows a message if the shell returns 1? Is there a way to conditionally surpress output from a shell command run in vim?

• Migrate Thunderbird 3 Saved Searches Between Accounts

  Long story short, the sysadmins have moved me to a new mailserver. In the process, they needed to create a separate account in Thunderbird and disable my old account. They took care of all of the mail migration. However, my saved search folders didn't go along for the ride. I have over 20 complex searches that I'd rather not have to reenter manually by hand. You can't drag saved searches between accounts like other folders. I tried closing Thunderbird, doing a find/replace in virtualFolders.dat in my Thunderbird profile folder, saving that file, and reopening Thunderbird, but that didn't appear to do anything. I'm assuming the search folders are also saved in one of the sqlite databases... does anyone know where to look?

• Baffling Exchange 2010 issue , Outlook 2003

  Recently we upgraded from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010. The Exchange 2003 server is still up and active with a handful of users still there we are planning on migrating. Also we have mobile devices and a Blackberry BES server setup publishing to Exchange 2010 public folders free busy. The unfortunate issue is majority of our clients are still Outlook 2003. The issue seems to be hit and miss but sometime clients cannot view other client’s calendars. They get (cannot refresh free/busy) when they add another user and check their available times. This is also true with booking resources (conference rooms) . One thing we noticed is that the Blackberry BES seems to have created its own free/busy folders, so we have some users who use the BES on free/busy folder and other users who don’t use the BES on other free/busy folders. If any of the clients log-in via “Exchange 2010” web-access or with a Outlook 2007 client they can view the calendaring just fine. Thanks for your help Nick @Toshana

• DFS replication initial step problem

  I just setup DFS on my network and it's working fine, and now I'm trying to setup DFS-R on a test folder, but then at the end of the procedure (all went fine, selected my 2 folders, primary folder, replication topology and such) I get this error message (roughly translated from french) : Unable to define security on the replicated folder. The shared administration folder doesn't exist. I'm also wondering if there's any required security on the folders to replicate so that DFS-R can access it. I was trying to add SYSTEM in the security, but it won't find it/allow me. The folder has many many files and folders on the primary DFS pointer, but none on the 2nd, just created it with quite the same rights. Note that the primary DFS pointer is on a 2008 server and the DFS service and the secondary DFS pointer are on a 2008r2. Any help is very appreciated, thanks.

• Windows Server 2008 R2 permissions: Users can't write despite being administrators

  We just set up a new R2 server and created a bunch of local user accounts on it that are part of the administrator's group. We then set permissions on some shares and folders to allow FULL CONTROL to anyone from the administrator's group. However, the users cannot write to these folders when logged on. On some folders on the C:\ they are prompted for consent in order to gain permission to read them. Any ideas? Are there any tools that would help me troubleshoot this? • Mozilla Thunderbird new emails indication colour

  I've recently upgraded Mozilla Thunderbird to v3 on Winodws XP. In v2 I think when new (Pop 3) emails were downloaded, there were a little star icon next to my local folders where it's filtered to as to indicate new emails. In v3, it seems they've changed it to use different colour to highlight the folder instead. Whereas folders with existing unread emails are highlighted in bold black, folders with new unread emails are highlighted in this light grey greenish colour that's really hard to see. Can anyone please tell me how to modify the colour? I'm guessing it's either some lines in a userChrome.css file, or modifying a field in the config editor. Thanks. :)

• Desktop notifcations for IMAP subfolders in Outlook 2013

  I use Outlook 2013 and an IMAP account for my mails. I have configured several filters (rules) directly in the webmail application of my provider in order to deliver certain mails, e.g., from my boss, into certain folders other then the "inbox". Note that I did not define any rules in Outlook itself and I also do not want to do so (because I want these mails being delivered into the folders not only in Outlook but also on other devices). The problem is that that I receive desktop notifications only for incoming mails in the main folder ("Inbox") but not for mails in any of the other folders.

  I'm running Win XP SP3 on an IBM R50e laptop, and I just realized a folder named c8c6ac6192a47b59df in the root of my C:\ drive. I can see 2 folders in it named amd64 and i386. These two folders cannot be opened. XP says: c8c6ac6192a47b59df cannot be accessed. Access Denied. However, when I view the properties of the strangely-named folder, it shows 2 folders, 0 files, 0 bytes. I tried Unlocker to be able to unlock and delete the folder, but Unlocker says there are no handlers. What's this folder and how can I delete it?

  I have xbmc installed on a softmodded classic xbox and all of a sudden I cannot connect to the shared folders on my windows 7 PC. Well, it can connect but it wants a username and password, but none exist on my computer. It's been several weeks since I last used it, but it was working fine then! and no particular changes I can think of aside from I guess a few windows updates. I've seen reference online to windows live essentials causing issues with file sharing, but I don't even have that installed. And I made sure to tick 'turn off password protected sharing' in my advanced network setup. I had the guest account turned off and working fine before, and tried turning it on but no luck. I can access my shared folders fine from other Computers and a ps3. I've read a couple threads of similar situations on various folders and none of their solutions have worked.

• Is it possible to have zsh+keychain+tmux not ask for keys?

  I'm using tmux and zsh, and I've recently been learning about ssh-agent and keychain. From the manpage for zsh, it says that it will source .zlogin only if the shell is, well, a login shell. Following advice I read, I stuck keychain --clear in my .zlogin, which worked perfectly. When I logged into the box I had to unlock my key. However, each time I create a new window in tmux, it clears/makes me re-add my key. This is a little annoying... but I can understand it if, in fact, each new tmux window is a login window. I haven't been able to find much help outside of the manpages on this topic. So is each new tmux window a login shell, or is there any way that I can make it not clear my keys only when I create a tmux window?

• Win2008 - restrict VPN user permissions

  Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Foundations file server with no AD, only workgroup sharing some folders, and now a RRAS server. Shared folders are open to everyone in the office (XPs and Sevens) without accounts/passwords, but I was thinking about partially limiting access to the new "VPNuser" account. I'm new to Windows Server and its permissions settings: I thought about denying access to vpnuser through NTFS rights in some folders. It doesn't work, but now I'm guessing that the vpnuser is not considered as a logged user (doesn't appear as such) and is considered a "guest", like the rest of people connecting in the office.   I wish to add a command on right click menu in explorer that opens current directory with cygwin. I want generic right click on explorer, on which, search gives me this registry to edit: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shell\cygwin] @="c:\\cygwin\\bin\\bash.exe --login -i -c \"cd '%1'; bash\"" My problem lies with the value of the key, which doesnt work on %1 but on some static value like /cygdrive/c Could someone please tell me the proper way to pass current directory to the command, also please refer me some basic and advanced pages for same. • Running a command line app with sudo and password automatically on OS X startup

  I need to run an app at startup/login on my mac. I want it to launch in the background and start doing it's work without interrupting me or me having to start it up because I invariably forget and then when I need it, it wasn't running! I have tried using AppleScript to tell Terminal to run it and type my password in, but it ends up opening multiple Terminal windows and not working. Ideally I need a script that I can just add to the user login items and it will run for me. The app has no way of taking a password argument either and it has a password as well as the sudo! I need a solution that can either be done as an applescript (which can be made into an executable) or i need a commandline script but I have no idea about them. • Possible causes for Domain server being unavailable?

  One of our servers was compromised after a user with administrative privileges accidentally loaded a virus from a USB drive on a desktop connected to the domain. The two most obvious symptoms of this were: The server is no longer responding to login attempts The root directory of the drive containing user data has been filled with randomly named empty folders. (Initially it was around a million folders, I've been slowly deleting them.) I've run several virus scans from different vendors and am fairly confident the virus has been removed but the damage is done. I'm hoping the two symptoms are related and that once the directories are gone the server will start responding again. The drive is very slow to respond. I'm deleting about 20k folders at a time. Anymore than that and windows explorer becomes unresponsive. In the event that I finish cleaning up the HD and things don't return to normal what other things can I check?

  I have a domain in my HOSTS file; www.mytestbusiness.com However, I want to convert some folders into subdomains automatically, e.g. www.mytestbusiness.com/birmingham www.mytestbusiness.com/london which should be: www.birmingham.mytestbusiness.com www.london.mytestbusiness.com Only for some folders do I want to keep it as a domain/folder link, e.g. www.mytestbusiness.com/styles/ I don't want the CSS folder becoming a subdomain, or certain folders like cgi-bin, dwoo etc. (dwoo contains the site templates!) I am running Apache 2.2 on Windows 7 Home Edition, and the site has no issues, it's just creating subdomains in .htaccess without having to manually declare them which is the problem. What's the best way to do this, other than manually declaring them in httpd-vhosts.conf as I used to do? Thanks

• How do I reinforce compression options?

  Shortly after I got my computer, I enabled NTFS compression on it, selecting the option to compress "all files and subfolders". I recently noticed that several folders on my PC are not compressed anymore, including "Program Files" and "Windows". I suspect this happened when I installed Windows 8.1. The problem is, the only way I can think of to fix this would be to uncheck the tick box under "Properties" for my drive, thus decompressing everything on my drive, and then re-check it with the "all files and subfolders" option. Is there a way to compress all the uncompressed folders without first decompressing the compressed folders?

• Firefox: show bookmarks location in search result

  I've been a user of firefox for years. Like most, I collected a large number of bookmarks, and over time it now contins lots of folders and nested folders... When I add a new bookmark, I would like to place in specific folder as other related ones. The thing is when I use the search functionality in the Bookmarks Library, it does not say what folder each item is in. And I end up manually looking through all folders (very tedious!) Any suggestion on how to do more efficiently?
