• What’s new in IIS8, Perf, Indexing Service-Week 49

After some delays in the publishing process week 49 is finally live.  This week I'm taking Q&A from viewers, starting with what's new in IIS8, a question on enable32BitAppOnWin64, performance settings for asp.net, the ARR Helper, and Indexing Services. Starting this week for the remaining four weeks of the 52 week series I'll be taking questions and answers from the viewers. Already a number of questions have come in. This week we look at five topics. Pre-topic: We take a look at the new features in IIS8. Last week Internet Information Services (IIS) 8 Beta was released to the public. This week's video touches on the upcoming features in the next version of IIS. I'm guessing it has to do with memory usage... but I never could find detailed explanation on why this is recommended (even Microsoft books are vague on this topic - they just say - do it, but provide no reason why it should be done). Do you have any insight into this? (Predrag Tomasevic) Question 2: Do you have any recommendations on modifying aspnet.config and machine.config to deliver better performance when it comes to "high number of concurrent connections"? I've implemented recommendations for modifying machine.config from this article (http://www.codeproject.com/KB/aspnet/10ASPNetPerformance.aspx - ASP.NET Process Configuration Optimization section)... but I would gladly listen to more recommendations if you have them. • 503.1 Service Unavailable Error Resolution

  I was having a hell of a time tonight with my IIS on my development laptop. I don’t remember doing anything to change the IIS settings. I don’t use IIS that much on my dev machine. Usually Cassini is enough for testing my development efforts but tonight I needed to replicate a problem that seems to stem from x86 v x64 mismatch, so I went to create an IIS site pointed to my dev folder. When I did, I got a “503.1 Service Unavailable Error”. First thing I did is go over all my setting to make sure I didn’t screw something up when I set up the site. It was pointing to the right place, and the app pool settings seemed to be alright. However, when I got the 503.1 error and went back to my app pool list, I saw that the app pool I was using was stopped again. I must’ve started and ran it a dozen times to verify that I wasn’t seeing things. After having a colleague look at it and not finding an answer, I started poking around Google. I cam across a post from Phil Haack about the same error. His fix was not mine, however. When I ran his command on the CLI, I didn’t see the reserved routes for HTTP.SYS there. Finally, I looked in the event viewer (where I should have looked as soon as I saw that my app pool was stopping) and saw an error in there. For the IIS-W3SVC-WP Source I saw: The worker process for application pool 'DefaultAppPool' encountered an error 'Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions ' trying to read configuration data from file '\\?\C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\CONFIG\machine.config', line number '0'. The data field contains the error code. So I went to that path and saw a little lock on the file icon. I opened up the security tab for file properties and saw that I was missing the IIS_IUSRS group. On a machine that was working correctly, I verified that it indeed had the IIS_IUSRS group set to Read and Read & Execute allowed. So I set mine up the same and voila! Hopefully this helps somebody else, too.

• Installing Yaws server on Ubuntu 12.04 (Using a cloud service)

  I'm trying to get a Yaws web server working on a cloud service (Amazon AWS). I've compilled and installed a local copy on the server. My problem is that I can't get Yaws to run while running on either port 8000 or port 80. • Sharing one static ip for both ftp and www service

  Trying to figure out how to update the Zone record and configure webserver so that one application on the webserver is accessible by public. I'm completely not good at NS/DNS/NAT/firewall/routing/port forwarding/networking etc. "faraday" is the intranet name. Everyone within local network can access all applications hosted on "faraday". Hostname for webserver is "www", FTP server is "ftpserver". Both servers running RHEL4 OS. The goal is to allow anyone outside the company network (public) to access only one of the many applications on "faraday". Hope somebody can help me with some of the questions below, if not all. From zoneedit record, the static IP is used by FTP now. Can I use the same existing static IP - 219.95.10.100, for web service? Currently anyone who enter "http://www.abc.com.my" will be directed to "http://www.abc.com". I don't want this to change. Currently, no one else, except employee on local network, can access "faraday" web pages. How to configure so that when anyone type "http://thisapp.abc.com.my" on their web browser, the url will lead them to "http://faraday/thisapp" (application folder is /var/www/html/thisapp on RHEL4 web server). If possible, how to set the URL will continue to show "http://thisapp.abc.com.my" instead of "http://faraday/thisapp" How to limit/restrict user (those who are not from local network) so they only have access to "http://thisapp.abc.com.my", but not "http://faraday" or "http://faraday/anotherapp", etc. What's the configuration changes needed in /etc/httpd.conf on web server? • Ideal backup appliance for backup software like Bacula?

  I'm at a small company and we (the IT department of two) manage <100 client computers and a handful of servers. Currently we're using a company's appliance to handle backup; it does a small backup every night and a full backup every weekend, and a guy comes on Wednesday to take an offsite backup drive (and gives back last week's drive to swap with it). The backup is done only on the servers' hard drives, because our client computers and employees make sure not to store anything worthwhile on their own computers. So it's a pretty simple situation. Lately this system, mainly the appliance, has been having problems, so we are looking for an alternative. I'm researching other companies but also looking into what we might expect from trying to do this ourselves. There will undoubtedly be a large learning curve, but hey, that's what serverfault is for, right? :) So anyway I was looking at Bacula. Feature list sounds great, documentation is plentiful, but it's only software. So my question is, what is the ideal backup server to run the Bacula server software on? And not only the server but other related appliances. Our current backup appliance uses only hard drives, not tape drives. It has several plugged into it at one time, in hotswap bays on the front of the machine. I couldn't help but notice though, it's hardly more than Windows XP with hard drive bays, a PCI eSATA card (which connects to another appliance extension piece with 2 more bays), and their software. Since the company will take back their appliance if/when we cancel with them, where can I go to configure a server with these kinds of things? And should I consider switching to tape drives? What other concerns should I be thinking about when I pick out hardware for a backup server? Maybe I'm being naive, I'm sure Dell (and any other computer company) sells them in the small business section of their website, but I wanted to make sure that there's not some other more recommended place that other companies are getting their hardware from, and that I don't need anything special for Bacula.

  I am a graphic designer (among other things) and I'm used to doing magazine advertisements, brochures, posters and that sort of thing. Recently I was approached by a photographer who wants a graphic designer to produce wedding albums for him. I have already done a couple for him but I'm finding it hard to work by just arranging my layouts in Photoshop alone. It's very time consuming, but quite repetitive - especially when you're dealing with common page layouts. I know a lot of photographers use album design software to speed up the process a bit. • Software restriction policies set in the registry don't update Local Group Policy

  The joys of a Samba domain... First off Domain Group policy can't be used until Samba 4 arrives. We need to setup Software Restriction Policies (SRPs) on most of the computers in our Samba domain and I would dearly like to automate this. (We are moving away from just disabling the Windows installer). The traditional way is to set SRPs using Local Group Policy (LGP) Computer Conf-Windows Settings-SRP but this involves visiting every machine as it can't be set using in NTConfig.pol. It is possible to attempt to create the SRPs directly in the registry: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Safer\CodeIdentifiers\262144\Paths\{30628f61-eb47-4d87-823b-6683a09eda87}] "LastModified"=hex(b):40,a2,94,09,b5,5d,ca,01 "Description"="" "SaferFlags"=dword:00000000 "ItemData"="C:\\location\\subfolder" SaferFlags DWORD seems to be what turns it on or off, but although this seems to work it does not update the Local Group Policy - SRPs still show as "No SRPs Defined". Where does the LGP store this setting - is it even in the registry and more importantly - Is there a cleverer way of setting up SRPs?

  I have been searching for the list of metadata field of an ISO file on Google but couldn't find anything. That made me think that there isn't any metadata in an ISO file, just the files content and their properties. However, today I find in ImgBurn that there is a field called Imp ID, which typically contains the software used to create the ISO file. I'm not sure if it is specific to the UDF and/or CDFS filesystem. What are the other possible metadata fields in an ISO file? What software may I use to see them?

• Software Router: pfSense or Vyatta ?

  Hello, I'm rebuilding my home network and I am look to an alternative to the very expensives Cisco. So I take a lookt at the software routers, I've found Vyatta and pfSense. I have tested both and I find both great, but I don't know which one to choose. I need a router software that : Supports IPv6 (both do with pfSense 2 RC1) Allows me to join an OpenVPN Network Is free Configurable by CLI (WebGUI is a plus) After some testing, it looks like both a very featured, but Vyatta looks more CLI-centric where pfSense looks more WebGUI-centric. Which do you recommend me ? Why ? Is there any limitations on the free version of Vyatta ? I would like to run it on a small box like Soekris ones, it that possible ? (pfSense will run it, but I'm not sure with Vyatta) Thank you

• Mac OS X Server Open Directory does not push Software Update settings to clients

  I have an Xserve G5 running Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 configured as an Open Directory master. I have also enabled and configured Software Update service on the machine. The SUS is configured to serve Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard clients (see http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10297359#10297359) The clients bound to the OD are a variety of Mac's running OS X 10.4, 10.5 or 10.6. In Workgroup Manager, I have created 3 machine groups for each client OS. Each group is configured with a custom SUS URL, and the managed client computers are members accordingly (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10493154#10493154) My problem is that the server pushes the SUS settings to some of the client machines, but not all. When I first configured all this stuff on the server (a few weeks ago) I was closely monitoring a few of the client machines to confirm that they received the custom settings. I noticed that some of the clients (10.4/5/6 alike) seemed to get the settings immediately, others didn't show the new settings until after a reboot. As I said, results are mixed across OS's, but some clients will not "sync" at all. My immediate thought was to unbind/rebind the problematic machines. I did this on several client computers with no success. For example, today I was working on one of the Tiger clients. I noticed it was not pointed at my local SUS, so I checked the OD binding; it was fine. Just to be sure I unbound the machine. Next, I checked WM and confirmed the computer record was gone. I noticed the machine group still had a residual (broken?) member from the unbound client; I manually removed this. Finally, I re-bound the client to OD and re-added the machine to it's correct group in WM. Unfortunately, the client still pings apple's SUS for updates. Just to play it safe I rebooted the client, but to no avail, it will not see my local SUS. To confirm that there is nothing wrong with the server, or the client's connection to it, forcefully pointed the machine at my SUS: sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL "$LOCAL_SUS_URL" and the machine successfully updated off my local server. Great, successful updates, but problem not solved. I've done exhaustive reading on discussions.apple.com (not saying I read everything, I'm just saying I have read a lot) without a good answer. The discouraging thing is that a lot of OD problems I've read about only result in the sysadmin completely reinstalling the server, or OD, or some other similarly heavy-handed operation. At this point, I am not willing to go that route. I still have hope that I can find the reason for this flaky behavior. If anyone can point me in a helpful direction it would be much appreciated. EDIT: Indeed, some files are being pushed to the client: # from client machine: $ sudo find /Library -type f -name com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist /Library/Managed Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist /Library/Managed Preferences/username/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist A few weeks ago, prior to my (previously mentioned) modifications, the SUS was still running "stock". Which meant it could not serve SL (10.6) machines. At that time, the Software Update settings were setup in WM under User Groups. This didn't make any sense because some users work on multiple machines with different OS's. Before creating Machine Groups in WM, I deleted all the SU settings from the User Group Preferences. This just makes the whole thing more confusing, because when I see a file here: /Library/Managed Preferences/username/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist I assume it's still remaining from the "old" settings, because I wouldn't think a Machine Setting belongs there. Despite all the com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist hanging around under the Managed Preferences, why does the client machine still call home to Apple and not my SUS? # on client machine: $ date Tue Jan 25 17:01:46 EST 2011 $ softwareupdate --list Software Update Tool Copyright 2002-2005 Apple No new software available. switch terminals... # on server: $ tail -n1 /var/log/swupd/swupd_access_log 10.x.x.x - - [25/Jan/2011:15:54:29 -0500] XXXX POST "/cgi-bin/SoftwareUpdateServerStats" 200 13 ... Notice the date of the client softwareupdate and the latest access to the SUS server; the server never heard a peep from that client.

• Device cannot be added on software-raid-1 array on Ubuntu 12.04

  Unfortunately all tutorials I have found online until now on how to setup software-raid-1 are outdated on ubuntu 12.40 My target is to setup it on a system with a secondary disk drive that is already running. Format is not an option! I am trying to follow and adapt from 11.10 to 12.04 the following tutorial: http://www.howtoforge.com/how-to-set-up-software-raid1-on-a-running-lvm-system-incl-grub2-configuration-ubuntu-11.10-p2 On the above tutorial there is a successful command which creates a raid-1 array by setting the first disk drive with the installed system as missing: mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=1 --raid-disks=2 missing /dev/sdb1 But when the time comes to add the first main drive with the installed system on the raid-array with this command: mdadm --add /dev/md0 /dev/sda1 I receive an error message. The error message says that the device /dev/sda is (which makes sense) busy! Note: hardware raid solution is not available since the system is a laptop with two disk drives! Thank you

• How to set up a software VPN when moving a server to the cloud

  I work in a small company with one office in Dallas and another in Los Angeles. We run a Fedora server at our Dallas location and use a Linksys RV042 at each location to create a VPN connection between the sites. Every time the power or internet goes out in Dallas, our server is inaccessible so the entire company goes down. Because of this, we would like to use a shared server in the cloud (something like Linode) to avoid this problem. As a relative novice to VPN configurations, I would like to know if it is possible to set up a software VPN on the cloud server and connect our local networks in Dallas and LA to that VPN. I've read about openvpn and ssh vpns, but I don't know it is the best option. Could anyone with some experience point me in the right direction on the right combination of software VPN and hardware for this? We're open to new hardware to make this happen. Thanks!

• Software for mosaicing video frames into a panorama

  I have some video footage I've shot using a dolly with the camera rotated 90 degrees to the right. Which gives me a sideways tracking shot of a background. Does there exist some kind of software I can create a single image from the video footage? The result I want is one single image of the entire shot. I guess I could export every Nth frame and use Photoshop (or any other type of panorama software) to merge the images together, but this would make it easier. Thanks.

• Linux software to maintain old/backup versions of directory tree

  I am replacing an old Linux file server serving NFS and CIFS. For the new server (still serving CIFS and NFS), I would like to have software that automatically and efficiently maintains old revisions of files in parallel trees, so that they can be accessed by users without special tools. I am looking for software that is akin to Time Machine or Flyback, but works well on a server. The dataset is some 10000 files weighing maybe 60 GB. Changes are relatively few, usually less than 100 files changes daily. Using LVM snapshots will not cut it, as the old revisions must reside on a separate set of disks from the live data. Edit: To clarify: keeping old revisions is non-vital addition to the solution, so any suggestion will have to stay in the range of some hundred euros.

  I've simply been amazed by the quality and speed of Onlive, as this technology has the potential of making hardware requirements irrelevant to the average user. However, at the moment Onlive is only for remotely controlling video games, and not desktops or other devices in general. I'm in pursuit of software or services that can accomplish this as well as Onlive does. I need: viewer (client) program portability (able to run on a USB stick) DirectX, OpenGL / full-screen game compatibility on the server side.** Gaming-acceptable color/scaling quality and responsiveness. I have a very powerful desktop at home and I want to be able to access this raw power from any other computer that I stick my USB into (in the same way Onlive gives gamers use of their powerful servers) What software/services has most of the above?   Looking for a software to help my friend learn to sing. Can't seem to find anything on googles. Does there exist software (preferably downloadable and from this century!) that records one's voice and then analyzes it to see how "accurate" it was. It would be great if it also had some kind of "lessons" of some sort, and not simply sound recorder that shows waveforms. I can't imagine it would be so hard to implement, and there probably is one out there - I just can't find it. Any recommendations are welcome. Thanks.

• Ubuntu Not Starting After Installing Software Updates

  I just did a software update on my Ubuntu 9.10, after that it asked me to restart my system which i did and once i did that, grub opend some simple bash shell or something... i dont know how do i run ubuntu now??? Ubuntu 9.10 was installed 1 week back using the wubi installer... which is like a one click install from windows... it is installed on the same partition as winxp... i chose 12 gb hd space while installing ubuntu.. it was working good for 1 week... i decided to do the software updates today morning and now its not even starting!!!

• Secure external connection to SQL Server (from third party software)

  I have a SQL Express 2008 R2 server running on a server in an internal lan network. A few databases are used by some third party software to store data. A SQL-Server user is used by this application to connect to the database. Now I need to access this database using a local installation of the software from an external pc. In this particular case a VPN connection is not the solution I am looking for. I have access to an external linux server, so I tried ssh tunneling from the windows server to the linux server and use the external pc to tunnel it back from the linux server to the client, but this is working very very slow. What are my other options to allow this external connection in a safe way?

• Is there any way to do 'software raid' without losing data?I

  I say software raid because that is a pretty tentative guess at what I actually want. I have two drives, both with stuff already on them which I want to combine. If they weren't full of stuff (data, not windows installation) I would use software raid to combine them into one big drive or make them into one partition. I could probably do this with some complicated reference system but really I just want to be able to keep saving things to X: without running out of space until both drives are full. Thanks in advance.

• SharePoint 2010 search crawl not working

  I have the following set up: 1 x Windows server 2008 R2 running SQL 1 x Windows server 2008 R2 running SharePoint 2010. I have an issue with the search service application, the crawl appears to run for a never ending amount of time with 0 successes and 0 failures. Checking the Search Application Topology, I find that "Query Component 0" is "Not Responding". I have tried the following: I have ensured that the index directory has the right permissions applied to it and the search service account is in the right groups to consume those permissions. I have re-created the search service application. I have restarted the search service manually. I have trawled the net as much as possible to find a solution but as of yet have not come across something that has resolved this issue. Any input will be very much appreciated
