• Dark Windows 7 Screen

  My Gateway laptop -Windows 7- screen became too dark a few days ago after I finished installing Windows automatic update. I can see nothing unless I use a flashlight. Windows login screen is the only bright screen for few seconds. What should I do to resolve this issue? I checked power-saving/ Power Options settings and rebooting in Safe Mode. I tried to lower the refresh rate but it did not allow me. The laptop adapter type is ATI Radeon Xpress series. I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver. And the driver is up to-date. Any help would be appreciated.

• ASA Slow IPSec Performance

  I have a IPSec link between two sites over ASA 5520s running 8.4(3) and I am getting extremly poor performance when traffic passes over the VPN. CPU on the device is 13%, Memory at 408 MB, and active VPN sessions 2 so the load on the device is particularly low. • How do I extract files from one tarball to another tarball in one step?

  I have some fairly large tarball archives, from which I need to extract some files. I will later repack those files to transfer them to another server. Currently that is a two (multi) step process for me: mkdir ttmp tar -vxzf large.tgz -C ttmp/ --strip-components=<INT> <folder-to-be-extracted> or alternatively with wildcards mkdir ttmp tar -vxzf large.tgz -C ttmp/ --strip-components=<INT> \ --wildcards --no-anchored '*pattern*' Then I go ahead and recompress the created folder tar -vczf small.tgz ttmp/* rm -rf ttmp How can I combine these two commands into one? Like this tar -x large.tgz > tar -c small.tgz Just to show, what I already tried: Whenever I search the terms "extract" I will end up here or here or even here. When I use the term "split" I will end up here and that is definitely not what I intend to do. When I use "repack" I end up in strange places.

• Transferring NS records to a new server

  I feel like that was NOT worded well, but here is my current predicament. I recently had a GoDaddy dedicated server, and decided after their customer support failed to do anything but disappoint, to switch to Rackspace. We have 2 ns records that point to our godaddy server, and we have a few sites left on the server, that rely on it for their DNS zones, and the owners of the domains fail to respond to us. So, the question is, if I need to transfer the sites off of the OLD godaddy NS, can I point the A records from my ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com to match up with IP addresses of the Rackspace nameservers? OR, do I cname my NS records to match the rackspace ones? I DO know that this isn't advised, either method, but I need to get these sites moved before Godaddy tries charging another $2k for the server.

  I have my LAN set up as below: 192.168.2.1: ADSL Router (DHCP Range: 192.168.2.2-192.168.2.250) 192.168.2.254: Wireless Access Point 192.168.2.253: Ubuntu Server (Static IP) 192.168.2.2: My Laptop (Connects to Internet via the Wireless AP) NAT in router is active and set up to transfer requests made over port 80 to 192.168.2.253. Router's firewall is inactive. No IPs in DMZ. My friends get Apache's It Works page when they try to enter http://my_external_ip. But I get Router's configuration page instead of that. • How to efficiently dump a huge MySQL innodb database?

  I got an Ubuntu 10.04 production MySQL database server where total size of database is 260 GB while size of root partition is itself 300 GB where DB is stored, essentially means around 96% of / is full and there's no space left for storing dump/backup etc. No other disk is attached to server as of now. My task is to migrate this database to other server sitting in different datacenter. Question is how to do that efficiently with minimum downtime? I'm thinking in line of: Request to attach an extra drive to server and take a dump in that drive. Transfer dump to new server, restore it and make new server slave of existing one to keep data in sync When migration is needed, break replication, update slave config to accept read/write requests and make old server read-only so it won't entertain any write requests and tell app developers to update there config with new IP address for db. What's your suggestions to improve this or any alternate better approach for this task?

• How do I hookup a dual video card Crossfire rig to a single monitor?

  I just received a new Alienware box preinstalled with two nice shiny ATI 6950 graphics cards. My goal is to use both of them to give me really good resolution and frame rate on my single monitor. There's zero documentation with the Alienware box and nothing I can find online. Do I just plug the monitor into one of the cards, and expect the two cards to do magic internally? The ATI Crossfire website indicates a need for an "external crossfirex connection cable". Do I need to buy one of these? If so, what kind of cable is it? The AMD Catalyst Control Center shows the second card as "Linked" but when I go to the AMD Overdrive section, the second card is at zero temperature, and clock, suggesting it's not actually doing anything. What do I need to do to make use of both cards? Is it something that doesn't kick in until I do something graphically intensive?

• Terminal Server 2003 Gaining Time when Windows 7 Client Connects

  A Windows 2003 Terminal Server keeps time perfectly until a Windows 7 Home client connects. Then it gains time at a rate of several seconds per minute. The client connects through a firewall with only the RDP port open. The client runs the same apps on the terminal server that XP clients run with no issues. Using the Microsoft Terminal Server Client application copied to the W7 computer from an XPsp3 computer gives the same results. Current workaround is to sync time every 5 minutes. Any better ideas?

• Inaccurate bandwidth limiting in altq queues

  I'm setting up an environment where I have one Linux server, one OpenBSD router and one Linux client and I want to be able to limit how much bandwidth the client should be able to use. I've been performing these tests with "netcat" and "time" (using time to measure the time of the transfer with netcat), and what happens when trying these tests (using the TCP protocol, the queues will for some reason not work with UDP) is that the queues aren't exact at all. For example: when setting a bandwidth limit of 10mbit, the client cannot use more than five mbits, when setting a limit of 100mbit, the client cannot use more than around 50mbit. • Building a network at home, what cables to use (if any)?

  My house is currently in ruins and am building it. While doing so, I wanted to design a home network. My main objectives are surfing and HD streaming. The house is one-level, 100 sq/m (about 300 sq/ft), and one of the rooms is a safety room with Reinforced concrete walls. About a year ago, when I started planning, I thought about putting Cat 6 STP cables in the walls and create network points in the rooms. Should I use STP or FTP? I heard that STP is a problem regarding connectors and stuff. Is it really beneficial? Will it work OK if I transfer the wire together with the telephone line? Should I maybe go with WLan and count on 802.11n to enable me to stream HD across the house? is 802.11n that good?

I have the hard drive in a state it was last in, which is a small 250 gb hard disk. I have now installed 1.5tb hard disks, and installed a full licenced copy, as the original copy was a trial version. So I'm in a state where I have a new install, I have one of the old drives plugged in, but I can't transfer the old backups across, how do I do this?

• Web/Cloud Based OS with Torrent Features and Free Storage?

  Hi, I want a web-based OS with a torrent client and I want to link it to one of the many free cloud storage solutions. I think it would be really cool to be able to check and download torrents anywhere and not use my hardware or connection until I want to transfer the files down to my actual desktop (like burning a Linux ISO or to convert the file to a IFO format). Anywyas, I created accounts at 4Shared, EyeOS, GlideOS, ADrive and iCloud and am having no luck. There is an eyeTorrent app but I can't seem to get it configured and I can't log into my cloud storage from the cloud OS. Has anyone been able to pull this off and if so would you please explain how?   Right now I have an excel spreadsheet. In Cells A1 and down I have cities listed. In Cells B1 and down I have some generic information with the word CITY in it. What I want to know if there is a formula to replace the word CITY that is in the contents of Cell B1 with the contents in Cell A1. For instance... Cell A1 has "Daytona Beach, FL" Cell B1 has "Compare mortgage & refinance rates from different mortgage lenders and brokers in CITY. Find the home refinance rate you were looking for in CITY." I need a formula that replaces "CITY" in B1 with "Dayton Beach, FL" in A1. Is this possible? Thank you for your help!

• Does lshw list the "factory" speed of a memory module or the effective speed and how to find the former?

  I hope I phrased this correctly. lshw gives: description: DIMM Synchronous 400 MHz (2.5 ns) product: M378B5773CH0-CH9 vendor: Samsung physical id: 0 slot: DIMM0 size: 2GiB width: 64 bits clock: 400MHz (2.5ns) And indeed the memory speed is set is set to 800MHz in the BIOS, which I think makes sense since it is a double rate. On the other hand, Googling strongly suggests that to this product number corresponds the PC3-10600 type, which is 1333MHz, not 800MHz. And this seems to be confirmed in the BIOS, where if I select Auto for memory bus speed, 1333MHz is selected "based on SPD settings". However in the latter case, the computer does not boot, i.e. the kernel panics, complaining that something attempted to kill the Idle process. So, I am I am beginning to suspect that I have been given defective memory, the technician that installed saw this, and lowered the bus speed. Is this a possibility?

  computer: Samsung All in One PC OS: Windows 7 (up-to-date) BT Radio: Broadcom I have Bluetooth speakers I have successfully used with the system in the past. In fact, I had them set as default speakers so audio would transfer when I turned them on. No longer. Now, they show as 'disconnected'. Asking for connection gives no response. Option to set as default is greyed out. Bluetooth view utility gives an error of 10049 when I try to connect (supposedly, the means an invalid device address). I uninstalled the device and re-installed. No help. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

When you play some games, sometimes happens situations like "press quickly the X key to escape from ropes" or "press quickly the X key to fill the rage gauge", etc. Of course, that kind of game destroy keyboards, joysticks, mouses, etc. I would like to know about programs (preferentially free) that, by example, will press the 'x' key in intervals of, by example, 300ms. • Rsync : execute permission required

  I'm using rsync between two servers to transfer files. The problem is some files are not transferred. I get this error : rsync: readlink "/var/www/index.html" failed: Permission denied (13) So I check permissions on the server and after make tests, I notice a file is transferred only if it has these permissions : R-W ! If the file have these permissions : R--, Rsync can't download it !? • Best Practice: Migrating Email Boxes (maildir format)

  So here's the situation. I've got about 20,000 maildir email accounts chewing up a several hundred GB of space on our email server. Maildir by nature keeps thousands of tiny a** little files, instead of one .mbox file or the like... So i need to migrate all of these several millions of files from one server to the other, for both space and life-cycle reasons. the conventional methods i would use all work just fine. rsync is the option that comes immediately to mind, however i wanted to see if there are any other "better" options out there. Rsync not handling multi-threaded transfers in this situation sucks because it never actually gets up to speed and saturates my network connection, because of this the transfer from one server to another will take hours beyond hours, when it shouldn't really take more then one or two. I know this is highly opinionated and subjective and will therefore be marked community wiki.

• Text on Cisco ASA console is garbled/missing letters

  I've actually looked up a number of solutions for this problem and none of them work. There's this Cisco ASA 5505 that I'd like to use, that outputs mildly garbled text with missing characters. I did some googling and found that the most likely problem is a bad baud rate, so I tried all the baud rates, 7N1, 8N2... basically every possibility minicom had. Then I figured (since I can type ok, just not read) that if I factory reset it that it would fix whatever is set wrong with the terminal. That didn't work either. This usb-db9 adapter and console cable work fine on the catalyst switch in our office. My serial settings are 9600 8N1 with no flow control. Anyone know how to fix this? • Upgrading from 32 to 64 Bit Windows 7, without losing program installations/games

  I recently built a new computer and put the wrong installation of Windows on (32 bit), meaning I cannot use all of my RAM. I would like to upgrade to the 64 bit version, though I already have downloaded many programs and games which would total to around 30 GB give or take. I don't have the kind of data usage with my ISP to re-download this much data again, until next month (total GB will be higher as time goes on). I know there is Windows Easy Transfer, but it is not so much my data itself I'm worried about, it is more having to re-download and install a bunch of games and applications. Is it possible to perform an upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit without this loss?

• Lost support for Web Access on Verizon BlackBerry World Edition

  Hello all, I believe that some silliness has occurred with my blackberry after a OS upgrade. I have 2010 Blackberry world edition phone, purchased off a friend who went iPhone, that at first worked with web on the Verizon network. When i connected it to my PC to transfer contacts, it prompted for an OS upgrade, which I performed. Post-Upgrade I have found that i can no longer access any of the web services: eg. AppWorld, Email, Twitter, Browser. And they all state that i need to upgrade my account to gain access. I had a Storm previous to this that worked fine, and at the VZ store they told me this device is no longer supported (new in 2010 though), and they got me a free "upgrade" to the Blackberry flip. What i could use help with is finding a source stating it is discontinued or a guide that will help me re-enable the web features. I can provide further info later if needed (currently at work with the flip, the WorldEdition is at home).
