• ASA Slow IPSec Performance

  I have a IPSec link between two sites over ASA 5520s running 8.4(3) and I am getting extremly poor performance when traffic passes over the VPN. CPU on the device is 13%, Memory at 408 MB, and active VPN sessions 2 so the load on the device is particularly low. • How do I extract files from one tarball to another tarball in one step?

  I have some fairly large tarball archives, from which I need to extract some files. I will later repack those files to transfer them to another server. Currently that is a two (multi) step process for me: mkdir ttmp tar -vxzf large.tgz -C ttmp/ --strip-components=<INT> <folder-to-be-extracted> or alternatively with wildcards mkdir ttmp tar -vxzf large.tgz -C ttmp/ --strip-components=<INT> \ --wildcards --no-anchored '*pattern*' Then I go ahead and recompress the created folder tar -vczf small.tgz ttmp/* rm -rf ttmp How can I combine these two commands into one? Like this tar -x large.tgz > tar -c small.tgz Just to show, what I already tried: Whenever I search the terms "extract" I will end up here or here or even here. When I use the term "split" I will end up here and that is definitely not what I intend to do. When I use "repack" I end up in strange places.

• Problem connecting to Ubuntu Server in same local network.

  I have my LAN set up as below: 192.168.2.1: ADSL Router (DHCP Range: 192.168.2.2-192.168.2.250) 192.168.2.254: Wireless Access Point 192.168.2.253: Ubuntu Server (Static IP) 192.168.2.2: My Laptop (Connects to Internet via the Wireless AP) NAT in router is active and set up to transfer requests made over port 80 to 192.168.2.253. Router's firewall is inactive. No IPs in DMZ. My friends get Apache's It Works page when they try to enter http://my_external_ip. But I get Router's configuration page instead of that. What should I check or do? Thanks.

• Transferring NS records to a new server

  I feel like that was NOT worded well, but here is my current predicament. I recently had a GoDaddy dedicated server, and decided after their customer support failed to do anything but disappoint, to switch to Rackspace. We have 2 ns records that point to our godaddy server, and we have a few sites left on the server, that rely on it for their DNS zones, and the owners of the domains fail to respond to us. So, the question is, if I need to transfer the sites off of the OLD godaddy NS, can I point the A records from my ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com to match up with IP addresses of the Rackspace nameservers? OR, do I cname my NS records to match the rackspace ones? I DO know that this isn't advised, either method, but I need to get these sites moved before Godaddy tries charging another $2k for the server.

• Dark Windows 7 Screen

  My Gateway laptop -Windows 7- screen became too dark a few days ago after I finished installing Windows automatic update. I can see nothing unless I use a flashlight. Windows login screen is the only bright screen for few seconds. What should I do to resolve this issue? I checked power-saving/ Power Options settings and rebooting in Safe Mode. I tried to lower the refresh rate but it did not allow me. The laptop adapter type is ATI Radeon Xpress series. I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver. And the driver is up to-date. Any help would be appreciated.

  Doing a little research on the two to figure out which one may better suit my purposes (communications amongst different hardware). How do they fare against one another? Im far from being a specialist and have no idea where I would even start looking for data to compare and contrast. If possible can someone please answer the following questions in regards to each of these. Can they be networked amongst each other? Can they be easily networked over ethernet? What speeds do they transfer at? (Min, Max, Etc.) Reliability? Best framework to build on top of to support the above? Any standard communications programs? Debugging capability? • How to efficiently dump a huge MySQL innodb database?

  I got an Ubuntu 10.04 production MySQL database server where total size of database is 260 GB while size of root partition is itself 300 GB where DB is stored, essentially means around 96% of / is full and there's no space left for storing dump/backup etc. No other disk is attached to server as of now. My task is to migrate this database to other server sitting in different datacenter. Question is how to do that efficiently with minimum downtime? I'm thinking in line of: Request to attach an extra drive to server and take a dump in that drive. Transfer dump to new server, restore it and make new server slave of existing one to keep data in sync When migration is needed, break replication, update slave config to accept read/write requests and make old server read-only so it won't entertain any write requests and tell app developers to update there config with new IP address for db. What's your suggestions to improve this or any alternate better approach for this task?

• Terminal Server 2003 Gaining Time when Windows 7 Client Connects

  A Windows 2003 Terminal Server keeps time perfectly until a Windows 7 Home client connects. Then it gains time at a rate of several seconds per minute. The client connects through a firewall with only the RDP port open. The client runs the same apps on the terminal server that XP clients run with no issues. Using the Microsoft Terminal Server Client application copied to the W7 computer from an XPsp3 computer gives the same results. Current workaround is to sync time every 5 minutes. Any better ideas?

  I hope I phrased this correctly. lshw gives: description: DIMM Synchronous 400 MHz (2.5 ns) product: M378B5773CH0-CH9 vendor: Samsung physical id: 0 slot: DIMM0 size: 2GiB width: 64 bits clock: 400MHz (2.5ns) And indeed the memory speed is set is set to 800MHz in the BIOS, which I think makes sense since it is a double rate. On the other hand, Googling strongly suggests that to this product number corresponds the PC3-10600 type, which is 1333MHz, not 800MHz. And this seems to be confirmed in the BIOS, where if I select Auto for memory bus speed, 1333MHz is selected "based on SPD settings". However in the latter case, the computer does not boot, i.e. the kernel panics, complaining that something attempted to kill the Idle process. So, I am I am beginning to suspect that I have been given defective memory, the technician that installed saw this, and lowered the bus speed. Is this a possibility?

  Hi, I want a web-based OS with a torrent client and I want to link it to one of the many free cloud storage solutions. I think it would be really cool to be able to check and download torrents anywhere and not use my hardware or connection until I want to transfer the files down to my actual desktop (like burning a Linux ISO or to convert the file to a IFO format). Anywyas, I created accounts at 4Shared, EyeOS, GlideOS, ADrive and iCloud and am having no luck. There is an eyeTorrent app but I can't seem to get it configured and I can't log into my cloud storage from the cloud OS. Has anyone been able to pull this off and if so would you please explain how? When you play some games, sometimes happens situations like "press quickly the X key to escape from ropes" or "press quickly the X key to fill the rage gauge", etc. Of course, that kind of game destroy keyboards, joysticks, mouses, etc. I would like to know about programs (preferentially free) that, by example, will press the 'x' key in intervals of, by example, 300ms.   Right now I have an excel spreadsheet. In Cells A1 and down I have cities listed. In Cells B1 and down I have some generic information with the word CITY in it. What I want to know if there is a formula to replace the word CITY that is in the contents of Cell B1 with the contents in Cell A1. For instance... Cell A1 has "Daytona Beach, FL" Cell B1 has "Compare mortgage & refinance rates from different mortgage lenders and brokers in CITY. Find the home refinance rate you were looking for in CITY."   I have had to reinstall Home Server on my server and I would now like to restore it back to the state it was the last moment it stopped. I have the hard drive in a state it was last in, which is a small 250 gb hard disk. I have now installed 1.5tb hard disks, and installed a full licenced copy, as the original copy was a trial version. So I'm in a state where I have a new install, I have one of the old drives plugged in, but I can't transfer the old backups across, how do I do this?

• Inaccurate bandwidth limiting in altq queues

  I'm setting up an environment where I have one Linux server, one OpenBSD router and one Linux client and I want to be able to limit how much bandwidth the client should be able to use. I've been performing these tests with "netcat" and "time" (using time to measure the time of the transfer with netcat), and what happens when trying these tests (using the TCP protocol, the queues will for some reason not work with UDP) is that the queues aren't exact at all. For example: when setting a bandwidth limit of 10mbit, the client cannot use more than five mbits, when setting a limit of 100mbit, the client cannot use more than around 50mbit. • Rsync : execute permission required

  I'm using rsync between two servers to transfer files. The problem is some files are not transferred. I get this error : rsync: readlink "/var/www/index.html" failed: Permission denied (13) So I check permissions on the server and after make tests, I notice a file is transferred only if it has these permissions : R-W ! If the file have these permissions : R--, Rsync can't download it !? • What is fastest way to backup a disk image over LAN?

  Sometimes I boot sysrescd or a similar live linux on a PC to backup the hardrive over local network to my server. I noticed many times, that the transfer speed is not optimal (slower than HDD and network speed). Any rules of thumb what to do and what to avoid? What I typically do is something like: dd bs=16M if=/dev/sda | nc ... # on client nc ... | dd bs=16M of=/destination/disk/backup1 # on server I also "throw" in lzop (other are way too slow) and sometimes on the fly md5sum calculation (both of uncompressed and compress source). I try to add (m)buffer (or other alternatives) to improve throughput (and get a progress indicator). I noticed that even with enough free CPU, adding commands to the pipeline slows things down. Typically the destination is on a NTFS volume (accessed via ntfs-3g, with the _big_writes_ option).

• Building a network at home, what cables to use (if any)?

  My house is currently in ruins and am building it. While doing so, I wanted to design a home network. My main objectives are surfing and HD streaming. The house is one-level, 100 sq/m (about 300 sq/ft), and one of the rooms is a safety room with Reinforced concrete walls. About a year ago, when I started planning, I thought about putting Cat 6 STP cables in the walls and create network points in the rooms. Should I use STP or FTP? I heard that STP is a problem regarding connectors and stuff. Is it really beneficial? Will it work OK if I transfer the wire together with the telephone line? Should I maybe go with WLan and count on 802.11n to enable me to stream HD across the house? is 802.11n that good?

• SSH rsa key works with external IP not internal IP

  I am using rackspace cloud hosting. I have 2 servers behind a load balancer. Each server has an external IP and an internal IP. I want to setup a sync job that uses SSH to transfer files. I made an rsa key, and I can successfully SSH from server A into server B, using the external IP of server B, without being prompted for a password. If I try to do the same but use the internal IP, it prompts me for a password. I want to be able to use the key instead of the password. Why is this? Is there something special I have to do during key generation so it works for both IPs? Any help is appreciated.

• Bluetooth connectivity

  computer: Samsung All in One PC OS: Windows 7 (up-to-date) BT Radio: Broadcom I have Bluetooth speakers I have successfully used with the system in the past. In fact, I had them set as default speakers so audio would transfer when I turned them on. No longer. Now, they show as 'disconnected'. Asking for connection gives no response. Option to set as default is greyed out. Bluetooth view utility gives an error of 10049 when I try to connect (supposedly, the means an invalid device address). I uninstalled the device and re-installed. No help. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

• How do I copy hyperlink only (and not text) to another cell?

  I have a spreadsheet where column A displays names. There are a few hundred names and each has a different hyperlink (which links to that person's web page). I want to transfer those hyperlinks across to a different column which has different text in and no hyperlinks. Not every cell in column A has a hyperlink. There are groups of cells merged together, so A2:A7 has one link, A8:A13 the next, A9:10 the next (i.e. number of cells merged is not uniform). e.g. where A2:A7 reads "Bob" and links to www.bob.com, I want I2:I7, which reads, "Smith," and does not link to anything, to link to www.bob.com. I want to do this repeatedly, copying links from A2:A579 into I2:I579. The information is copied from a table within a web page, and that is where the hyperlinks come from.

• Lost support for Web Access on Verizon BlackBerry World Edition

  Hello all, I believe that some silliness has occurred with my blackberry after a OS upgrade. I have 2010 Blackberry world edition phone, purchased off a friend who went iPhone, that at first worked with web on the Verizon network. When i connected it to my PC to transfer contacts, it prompted for an OS upgrade, which I performed. Post-Upgrade I have found that i can no longer access any of the web services: eg. AppWorld, Email, Twitter, Browser. And they all state that i need to upgrade my account to gain access. I had a Storm previous to this that worked fine, and at the VZ store they told me this device is no longer supported (new in 2010 though), and they got me a free "upgrade" to the Blackberry flip. What i could use help with is finding a source stating it is discontinued or a guide that will help me re-enable the web features. I can provide further info later if needed (currently at work with the flip, the WorldEdition is at home).
