• Encrypt tar file asymmetrically

  I want to achieve something like tar -c directory | openssl foo > encrypted_tarfile.dat I need the openssl tool to use public key encryption. I found an earlier question about symmetric encryption at the command promt (sic!), which does not suffice. I did take a look in the openssl(1) man page and only found symmetric encryption. Does openssl really not support asymmetric encryption? Basically many users are supposed to create their encrypted tar files and store them in a central location, but only few are allowed to read them.

• Slackware 12 - installed cairo but cannot be seen

  Hi. I wanted to install gtk+ 2.16.5, so i also installed glib, pango and cairo. All seemed to work well, except for cairo. At first I got an error while configuring: Requested 'cairo = 1.6' but version of cairo is 1.4.12 I installed the newest version of cairo without any problems, i rebooted the comp and when i started the configure again the same thing happened and it showed me the same error. I also can see this: Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you installed software in a non-standard prefix. Alternatively, you may set the environment variables BASE_DEPENDENCIES_CFLAGS and BASE_DEPENDENCIES_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config. See the pkg-config man page for more details.   At the moment our all computers in one big LAN, it is the intention to separate the admin and edu (it's in a school) especially for traffic and less for security. How do this best? I have a drawing, but can't post it (a can send it in a mail) Firewall?, VLAN?, IPCop (no two green zones)?, pfsense? ... Should there be two scopes on the dhcp server (WIN 2008 R2), one for admin and one for edu or is one scope enough? I would like your advice, I am a student in training with this task as a project. • Laptops trying to connect via wireless? Only able to connect only via wired connection

  It seems that all the wireless laptops in the office have disconnected and are unable to reconnect to the wifi after a terrible storm caused some power interruptions. Troubleshooting actions Verify wireless broadcasting is up With each laptop i ended up flushing their dns cache on Win 7 (ipconfig /flush ) Performed an ipconfig /all to see what the new ip is Made sure password was correct Reset the router (multiple times) restarted each laptop. Tried connecting wirelessly Am i missing some small detail ? Network information The router is a linksys/cisco WRVS4400N router. Supports a lot of fancy features i don't know how to use. We have 3 static ip's the conference room computer, the wireless printer, my computer Mostly windows machines, we have 3 mac users

• Need to set mailx variable to specify the From address

  Running Oracle Linux 5.8 (which is just re-branded RedHat EL 5.8) I must change the From address. But we have scripts that use mailx which cannot be re-written to use any extra flags, so I'd like to use internal variables instead, which I see on the linux.die.net manpage on mailx is an alternative to the -r flag: -r address Sets the From address. Overrides any from variable specified in environment or startup files. Tilde escapes are disabled. The -r address options are passed to the mail transfer agent unless SMTP is used. • SQL Management Studio is painfully slow on 32-bit Windows 7

  I've been having issues running anything in SQL Management Studio on Win 7. Basically, doing anything through the Management Studio interfaces completely freezes it up for a few minutes. Running a query is nearly impossible because it takes nearly 2 minutes just for the IDE to parse it and another minute to run it when the query itself completes instantaneously outside of the IDE. I'm not even going to go into the query designer. Anything with heavy user interaction such as editing a row in the result set where i have to click a cell freezes up the front-end. I tried reinstalling to no avail. Also tried running in compatibility mode without any difference whatsoever. Anybody had a similar experience? I'm running SQL Management Studio 2008 version 10.0.2531.0 on 32-bit Windows 7. Connecting to a remote SQL Server instance (2008 R2). Thanks.

  Hell alltogether Since I have to do this often, I want to automate the joining to a windows domain as much as possible. While joining a domain one has to specify realm = in the /etc/smb.conf, along with some other settings like security=ads. Among these settingst there is workgroup = My question is: Is it possible to fill this field automatically by samba, while joining a domain? Normally I would just have said never, but as I tried leaving this field blank while joining a domain, i got: Failed to join domain: Invalid configuration ("workgroup" set to '', should be 'BLABLA') and configuration modification was not requested This has made me wondering whether an automatic modification is possible and if so how? • Using Folder Redirection GPO and Offline Files and Folders

  I want to use Folder Redirection to redirect user's My Documents to a network share. First question is: What is best practices for mapping the drive? Should I use the profile tab in AD with the %username% variable, or a net use logon script, or something else? Second question is: How do I deal with laptops and syncing the network with the local storage? I want to have 2-way syncing so if they manually map their networked home drive and edit it from a different computer, it will sync the newer version to their My Documents folder the next time they connect their normal work computer. I also want to be sure that if they edit a file offline on their laptop while away from the office, that the network version syncs the changes the next time they connect that laptop. Please advise best practices for this scenario in a 2008 R2/Win7 environment. I am also interested in Mac clients for this environment, and while I am very Mac savvy, I would like to hear what others consider to be best practices for Mac network homedirs in a Win environment.

• Windows server 2003 mapping home drive wrong

  hey all, first question... we have around 30 servers in an Active Directory environment with 600 student computers and 100 staff desktops with XP SP2/3, the win server 2003 has the staff home drives on a NAS and in the last few days after some server updates is now mapping home drives to the \servername\home instead of \severname\home\%username%, its simple to re map the network drive but is annoying. we dont use login script to map home drive but use a VB script for other network drives and if we add the home drive mapping to that it works, but shouldnt the profile option in users AD account map that correctly? which do you all recommend, AD profile mapping or VB Script mapping Home drives? thanks Steven

• Accessing network resources via vpn connection failes

  I already found some information on this problem here, but I still can't get it to work. Im trying to access some network resources on my server via vpn over the net. Im using a win7 home pc here and a win server 2008 rc2 with installed ras&routing role on the server. For vpn authentication I use a local user on the server with vpn-access. This user also has the rights to access to the network resources, but it neither finds the server under network nor is it able to connect the network drives... In similar topics here I found out that using the same credentials for vpn-authentication and network resources access does not work, but using different user for access didn't work either. All of these examples I found were in an active directory structure, but I don't have an active directory here. Does anyone know how to solve this problem without having to use an active directory? • How do large companies handle software updates for users without administrative rights?

  I just started working for a small-medium size company doing IT support. Maybe 150 or less users. Right now every user has administrative rights to their own machine. This allows them to install updates or whatever else they would like to. I'm tired of getting on user's machines that are bloated with crap they put on themselves. So my first thought would be to take away administrative rights to their computer. This would also have other advantages such as preventing a lot of drive-by malware on the web etc. The problem arises that users are unable to install updates. (Even though I find most ignore these anyway) How do large companies handle software updates on all client machines? EDIT: Windows environment. Most servers are Windows Server 2003 Enterprise. Clients are all Windows. Win XP, Vista, and 7.

• Apache Subversion and Sudo - Why can't I resolve this hostname?

  Okay, I made a mistake and I'll be the first to admit I'm new at this setup. I built a bare bones kit, installed Ubuntu on it, and attempted to set up a source control server for a project some friend and I were going to work on. Unfortunately, I screwed up. I followed a dodgy tutorial from 2005 and when it didn't work, started mixing and matching trying to get to the source of my problem. So now I sit before you, a broken and miserable man. Desperate to escape this annoying echo of 'Unable to resolve host computer.repositoryname.com', I uninstalled apache and subversion. That did not fix it. Next I tried to edit my /etc/hosts, going so far as to remove the reference to '127.0.1.1 computername'. Still I'm plagued. I know I messed up, is there any way to track down this wayward bug?

• Streaming video in Virtualbox jumpy

  I am trying to get Netflix to work on my Ubuntu netbook. I know it will not run in Linux so I am trying it in my Win XP virtual machine. It streams the video but the sound and video are out of sync and the video often freezes and jumps. I have tried Firefox, Chrome, and even IE. I am thinking my Atom N455 processor does not work well with virtualization. All other apps in the VM work fine. The only issue is streaming [YouTube is jumpy too].Does anyone know of Virtualbox settings I can try to possibly fix this issue or am I out of luck?

• Safari on Mac OS X lasts beyond Empty Cache

  So, I broke a website with some server changes oops. I roll back the changes I made, hit cmd-R, and oh noes, it is still broken. But I relax thinking, there must be something held in safari's cache so I press the handy 'Empty Cache' button. Hit cmd-R for refresh it is still broken. I'm really worried that I've done it and broken something bigtime. But first decide to check on a hand win xp computer, and voila it works. So the question is how do you "really" clear the cache w/o restart safari, I have many browser windows open a restart every time I make a server side change will ruin me. Any suggestions? Thanks!

• Is there a software package that safely allows SSH via web on simple web host?

  I want to be able to use a secured web page on my shared web host to make SSH connections out to any destination. A shared web host is cheap and easy to maintain, and usually allows ssh to the web server. There are times I'd like to ssh into my web server, but don't have direct ssh connectivity. I'm aware of consoleFISH, Ajaxterm, and Anyterm. The problem is consoleFISH is a man-in-the-middle by design, and Ajaxterm/Anyterm require running a daemon process on the hosting server. Web hosts can usually support cron jobs, but not continuously running daemon processes. Additional Apache modules are usually out, too, as they require reconfiguration of the server and affects all other customers. Are there any software packages out there I can run on my shared web hosting account that provide a true ssh experience with these limitations?

• Is it possible to change error messages for users connecting to network printers?

  We are cleaning up our print server (Win XP). To test that printers are no longer really there we have set up some tests. These tests have left us with 176 questionable printers. We have now set Print access to Everyone to Deny. Testing shows this gives the user a 5 Access is denied. message. We would like to change this message for the user, so when they call our workstudy's who answer the phone do not interpret this as a computer rights management issue and can route the call properly. Is it possible? Is this error number system wide, or just for printing errors? If it's not a system wide error where might the string for this error be?

  In virtually every FreeBSD network tuning document I can find: # /boot/loader.conf net.inet.tcp.tcbhashsize=4096 This is usually paired with some unhelpful statement like "TCP control-block hash table tuning" or "Set this to a reasonable value." man 4 tcp isn't much help either: tcbhashsize Size of the TCP control-block hash table (read-only). This may be tuned using the kernel option TCBHASHSIZE or by setting net.inet.tcp.tcbhashsize in the loader(8). The only document I can find that touches on this mysterious thing is the Protocol Control Block Lookup subsection beneath Transport Layer in Optimizing the FreeBSD IP and TCP Stack, but its description is more about potential bottlenecks in using it. It seems tied to matching new TCP segments to their listening sockets, but I'm not sure how. What exactly is the TCP Control Block used for? Why would you want to set its hash size to 4096 or any other particular number?

• Active Directory Replication across Sites slow or not working

  I've just inherited (isn't it always the way!) a Windows Domain. The domain is spread across 2 sites. Site01 has 3 DCs & Site02 has 2 DCs. If I create a user in either site, the other DCs in that site, immediately replicate and show the new user. The new user is not shown in the other site though. If I manually run the following command, everything syncs and the new user appears: repadmin /syncall issdc01 /APed In the Inter-Site Transports DEFAULTIPSITELINK the replicate every time value is set to 180 minutes. I thought this was the solution, but on another Windows Domain, this is the same, but replication takes place across sites immediately. What can I check to resolve this issue? We are running Windows Server 2008 Results of dcdiag /test:dns show a server that is no longer part of our domain: TEST: Delegations (Del) Error: DNS server: oldserver.win.domain.com IP: [Missing glue A record]

• Safe BIOS upgrade run from external USB-HDD and not native OS

  I have a Toshiba M200 laptop which came with Windows Vista. After buying it, I replaced the OS with XP and recently I swapped the internal hard disk with a bigger one where I only have Ubuntu. So now I can boot XP from the external USB hard disk. There's a BIOS update available (2.3 against my 1.8) which I'd like to install and there's also a version for XP. Is it "reasonably" safe to install this upgrade for Windows XP (despite the original OS was Vista, the laptop model is the right one) from my external USB hard disk with Win XP?

• Motherboard RAM question.

  Firstly I'm new at this. Not a very computer-ish person. So I very much apologize if this is not the right place, but here it goes.. My Motherboard is an Asus P5LD2-SE. I'm running in Win 7 Ultimate 32-bit(x86) OS, 1GB RAM (2x512 MB). I'm planning to upgrade my OS to 64-bit and because I know my Motherboard is a dual-channel, I bought a dual-channel 2 GB RAM (2 pcs). My question is; am I still able use my old RAM ones, since it is 4 slots..? Which in the end will show 5GB. Is it possible? Thank you for your time. =)

  I just joined a small computer lab which basically uses all Windows boxes and a few Windows Sever 2003. Coming from a *nix background I am missing all the nice tools that we have for diagnosis and troubleshooting. My question is what are the safe, free (not terribly concerned if it is like beer or freedom -both acceptable) tools out there that Windows system admins use for their day to day troubleshooting (network, applications, servers etc). I am aware of the tools that come with Windows (and their limited capabilites) - so my query is with what do you fill in your arsenal? (may be a list of win versions of tools that come in standard linux distros)

• Acad 14 SOLIDS disappeared, DWG file doesn't open correctly

  I made a drawing in Autocad 14 (Win XP) containing of mostly SOLID's. I saved and re-opened it multiple times without any problem. Before I last saved it I viewed my drawing using the SHADE functions. After re-opening all my SOLIDS have disappeared. I spent numerous hours searching for a solution, tried SATFIX.ARX , AUDIT, RECOVER without success (ACIS error - which should be gone after applying SATFIX), changed my computer locale from German (decimal = comma) to English (decimal = dot) but my screen remains empty (and yes I tried to recover from a .BAK, too) I also tried to export (the non-display drawing) into DXF and can confirm that all my objects are in there, but re-opening the DXF results in a huge ACIS error list again I am desperate - please can someone help - thanks! It is pretty straightforward to use argdo to search args files for a pattern and replace it while suppressing errors and requiring confirmation. :argdo %s/pattern/replace/gec | update However, I would like to delete entire lines that contain the pattern. I use the following. :argdo %/pattern/d | update But I can't suppress errors or require confirmation. Is there a way to do this? Thanks! (Also, is there a way to set "more" off? Thanks!)

• VMware 1.0.1 Windows7 - Ubuntu hostnames

  I'm trying to run Ubuntu as the guest OS using VMWware 1.0.10 with Windows 7 Ultimate as the host OS. I had this set up previously with Win XP as the host OS and in fact I'm using the same .vmx My problem is I can't get either Win7 or Ubuntu to be able to ping the other by hostname. After installing Samba and Winbind on Ubuntu, I was able to get this working when under WinXP, but for some reason I can't get it to work under Win7. I can ping by IP Address, and the guest OS even shows up by hostname under the Windows networking panel (but of course I can't do anything with it), but pinging using short hostnames just won't work. Also, Win7 firewall is turned off completely.
