• KVM Switch for a mac and a Windows (XP or 7) machine to share VDU

  Have a MacPro (snow leopard) connected to an (windows standard) Asus 25" monitor via a DVI--VGA adapter. Now the boss wants me to work from home, so I want to share my Asus display with a Windows XP laptop. No doubt once my wife sees this, she will want to do the same thing, but with a Windows 7 laptop. So what I would like, I think, is your recommendations for a KVM switch (or better solution) that allows the Mac and a (windows 7 or windows xp) laptop to share the Asus display. Bonus marks if they can share Apple keyboard and magic mouse, but am quite happy to use separate mouse keyboards. The MacPro is the one that is always connected, the laptops come and go. Any ideas? • Internet compression proxy for low speed broadband?

  I live in a rural location, using high-latency wireless off a local ISP's tower. My speed tests vary day to day, but I can get around 1Mb up/down. The problem is, I work with large files, uploading and downloading (HD videos, development software, etc.). It can be painful to wait sometimes. Plus I do some side contract game development, and it can be very difficult to playtest with other developers (200ms ping is a good day for me). Now, obviously it's not going to be easy to solve the latency problem without different wireless hardware. But speedwise, I am wondering if I can use some kind of compression technology on a proxy. For instance, my work computer has full access to a 26Mb down, 10Mb up connection, that is totally unused at night and the weekends. If I could run some kind of compression technology on our server, and use it as a proxy to route to my home computer, I could stand to gain some major speed. I realize that by bogging down a system with compression, I could potentially lose whatever speed gain I had. But the proxy server is a quad core xeon, and the receiving computer is a pretty decent i7 computer, so that shouldn't be a concern. I found http://toonel.net/ but it seems more geared toward very slow narrowband users, like dial-up. Plus, I would prefer to just be able to point my browser to a proxy server, rather then install software on my client machine. EDIT I thought about my question a little more, and realize I am going to need to install software on my client in order to decompress, and possible compress (for uploading). That's not a huge deal.

• Remap Copy and Paste shortcuts on a Mac

  I use Windows at work and a Mac at home. One of the biggest issues is the difference between the copy paste shortcuts on Windows vs the Mac i.e. Ctrl + C & Ctrl + V on Windows and on the Mac its Command + C and Command + V. Invariably its hard because of learnt motor skills where my hand always shapes itself to the Windows Ctrl + C configuration(I have been using Windows longer) I would like to remap the Copy and Paste to the Fn + C and Fn + V on the Mac. Why? Because the Fn key is actually the key that corresponds to where the Ctrl key is on Windows keyboards and since its the last edge key its easy to find. I have tried Double Command but it doesn't seem to have an option of turning Fn to the Command key.

  I didn't have an answer to my problem about adding additional keyboards in my Ubuntu 10.04. Questions mark is not working in my keyboard, only using Alt Gr key + W. So, I don't know if this is a problem with Ubuntu or Virtualbox itself (I'm running it inside a VM). I would like to debug this problem. The keyboard is plugged in, so when I press a key I believe something is being sent to my operating system, some code, I don't know. I would like to digg this problem, find some damn key code and find some damn *.conf file and manually fix my problem. So, do an application like this exist in Linux?

• Is it possible to add a WiFi HotSpot to an already established LAN, keep the two separate, and not modify the primary router?

  I have a set up where my Cisco ASA is sitting in one facility, providing access to the Internet for two buildings. The two buildings are geographically separated by a Wireless Bridge spanning about 10 miles. All computers and equipment inside the LAN are on the same subnet (its pretty small) and we have WiFi AP's in both locations providing Wired and Wireless access to the LAN. Given all the BYOD (Ipods, and SmartPhones etc...) coming into the office as well as Visiting reps etc... we would like to also provide a non-secure, device independent (the devices cannot see or communicate with each other), and LAN independent (the devices cannot see or use anything on the LAN) HotSpot that anyone could use for their Devices that gives them access to the Internet ONLY without needing a password. I get that this could be possible at the facility with my Cisco if I messed with it and created VLANs etc... but then I would need to get it across my Bridge as well and don't think that would be possible without serious reconfiguration of everything. Would really like some kind of magic drop in solution that can kind of piggy back on my LAN without really needing to do very many if any changes to the current set up.

• Why can't I connect to my home SSH (SFTP) server? What am I doing wrong?

  I am new to this topic of creating a SFTP server on one's computer. I would like to be able to access the folder on my Windows XP computer via SFTP from another computer or a phone. The following is what I have done so far: I have installed SSH Windows and everything is setup correctly because I can access it (the folder on my pc) via WinSCP. I however cannot access it from my phone. It doesn't connect. The phone can be on the same wireless network as the Windows XP computer, but I would prefer to be able to access this when not in the same network. Now, from what I have read and understood, the following is the information needed to connect: 1) Host Name: This would be my computer's ip address which I access by typing ipconfig in a cmd prompt (I access this easily on my computer because I simply put in localhost or 127.0.0.1) 2) Port Number: That would be port 22 (I have also added this to my router in the port forwarding section). 3) Username: This would be my Windows XP username. This however is my full name, including my middle initial followed by a period. I am wondering if this is maybe causing problems in accessing it from my phone, since the name has spaces and punctuation (the period). 4) Password: The password of my Windows XP computer Extra Info: When I say phone, I mean an Android phone and I am using an ftp / sftp app to access my pc via the phone's cellular network (I also tried the wireless, but that didn't work as well). I have tried more than one program. On one program it tells me Connection timed out and on another it tells me "timeout:socket is not established" Also, I know that I can use the site noip, but I prefer to connect this way first. Also, because I am new to this, I would like to look into what exactly noip is doing and if they would be seeing my files as they are transferred from phone to pc.   I have a typical semi advanced home network scenario: A cable modem - eth A wireless router (netgear n600) eth and wlan A home server (Running ubuntu 12.04 LTS, connected over wlan) A bunch of wireless clients (wlan) Lying around I have anoher cheaper wlan router, and two different USB wlan NIC's that are known to work with Linux. ACTA struck. I want to route ALL of my WAN traffic through a remote server through a VPN. For sake of completition, lets say there is a remote server running debian sqeeze where a VPN server is to be installed. The network is then to behave so that if the VPN is not operative, it is separated from the outside world. I am familiar with general system/network practices, but lack the specific detailed knowledge to accomplish this. Please suggest the right approach, packages and configurations you'd use to reach said solution. • Remotely enter encryption key?

  This might be a really dumb question but here goes, anyway. I just bought a couple servers. I already installed Ubuntu with encrypted LVM on one and I'm planning on doing the same with the other. This means that every time I boot up each of these machines, I have to enter the passphrase. And I'll have to do this every morning because I'll power each machine off each night for security reasons. Here's the problem: I don't have monitors or keyboards for these servers. It seems to me I have two options: Somehow enter the passphrase remotely Buy a KVM switch I doubt #1 is an option but I want to make sure it's not before I buy a KVM. Is it possible to enter the passphrase remotely? AND is it a good idea?

• How to Create a Minimize All Windows (Win + M) Hotkey for Mac OS X

  Windows users have been able to minimize every window on their desktop ever since keyboards with the Win key started showing up — just tap WIN + M on your keyboard, and every window is minimized. For Mac OS X, it’s not quite as simple. You can, of course, use the CMD + OPT + H + M shortcut key combination to hide most windows… but that’s a lot of keys to hit at once, and it doesn’t always minimize everything in my experience. So like everything else I wanted from Windows, it was time to figure out how to get it on OS X as well. This method uses QuickSilver to provide the shortcut key trigger — if there’s a better way to do that, please let us know. • Backtick (Grave accent) button sticking

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 running in a Virtual Box virtual machine, on my Windows 7 32bit system. It has been working great, except that the backtick/tilde button sticks(not physically). When I hit the backtick button it keeps repeating until another input button is pressed. So if I press the spacebar while the backtick is repeating, it stops, but if I press the shift while it is repeating, the backtick turns into a tilde, and the tilde keeps repeating until I release the shift key (at which point it's a backtick again and keeps repeating). This sticking behavior only happens with the backtick key, and only in my Ubuntu virtualization, never in windows. I've tried both my laptop's keyboard and an external USB keyboard and the problem happens on both. Both keyboards I've tried are Japanese 106/109 key layout, but I'm using them with a English(US) 101 profile. When I refer to the backtick key above, I mean where it is on the US layout. If I use the Japanese profile, the key in that location (the US backtick location) still sticks, but its no longer mapped as the backtick key. Any thoughts as to what might be causing this and possible solutions? I've searched a lot, but have not found any help so far. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  For some inexplicable reason the capital d key on my Ubuntu system is no longer producing output. Hitting caps lock and then d produces a D. I've tried multiple keyboards and the issue is the same. • How should developers handle subpar working conditions? [closed]

  I have been working in my current job for less than a year and at the beginning didn't have the courage to say anything about the things that bothered me. Now I'm a bit fed up and need things to get better. The first problem is not random but I'll mention it anyway. We are running out of space so every new employee gets a smaller table. We are promised that the space problem will be fixed soon. Almost every employee has a different keyboard, mouse, headphones (if any). Mine are $10 keyboard, some random cheap mouse and some random crappy headphones with a mic. All these were used and dirty when I got them. The number of monitor is 1-3 and with different sizes. I have 2 nice monitors and can't complain but some are given 1 small monitor. When it's their first job they don't have the guts to ask for 2 even if most others have 2. Nobody seems to care too. Project manager asked if it's ok? He obviously said he can handle the 1 small one. Then the manager said you can go ask for 1 more. I'm watching this and think go and ask where? The company is trying to hire more people but is not doing much after the person has signed the contract. We are put in one room that is open to the hallway and it's super noisy. Almost like a zoo at times. Even if nobody is talking the crappy keyboards make too much noise. Is this normal? Am I too negative and should I just do my job with what I was given? Should I demand better things? Should the company have some system that everybody gets things in some price range?

  I installed 12.04 version of Ubuntu on my Dell Inspiron Duo. After installing with help of program like UNetBootIn or smth like that. ( Besides i have no problem with kernel panic on chargin on/off like in 11.10. ) After that i followed with steps from here, in the first post here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1658635 There left one big problem with touchscreen: When i whant to drag with touchscreen like i`m doing it with mouse (for ex. selecting multile files with mouse) the selectable rectangular doesnot shows while im dragging, when dragging was finished (i put my finger off) it shows the rectangular and hides it. Also some time after using touchscreen such things are disabeling: - Often - click from a mouse (after keyboard using functinality restores) - less often - mouse movement disables (sometimes restores sometimes not) - lesser than other - keyboards works but no sygnals accepting (keyoards has indicator, so thay react, mouse of course not) The test from eTouchU utility passes perfeclty. • USB device changes using udev and D-Bus

  I am trying to get a list of currently plugged in USB devices in Ubuntu 10.10 and monitor changes that happen, like devices being plugged in or out using udev and D-Bus. I'm fairly new to programming using D-Bus. I saw one example: "Linux: How to detect is usb keyboard is plugged and unplugged". Problem is that it uses HAL and I know that HAL is deprecated. I found some working code, but it's working only with storage devices such as USB sticks, media players or CD-ROM drives. I want the whole thing: mice, keyboards, USB cameras, chargers; anything that is plugged in to the USB. How can I listen D-Bus events for any USB device plug and unplug? • Capital D key not working / producing output

  For some inexplicable reason the capital d key on my Ubuntu system is no longer producing output. Hitting caps lock and then d produces a D. I've tried multiple keyboards and the issue is the same. • xmodmap modifications aren't enough - anything else I can do?

  I'm using an Apple keyboard which has some annoyances compared to other keyboards. Namely, the Alt_L and Super_L keys are swapped, and the bar and less keys are swapped ("|" and "<"). I've written an Xmodmap file to swap the keys back: keycode 49 = less greater less greater onehalf threequarters keycode 64 = Super_L NoSymbol Super_L keycode 94 = bar section bar section brokenbar paragraph keycode 108 = Super_R NoSymbol Super_R keycode 133 = Alt_L Meta_L Alt_L Meta_L keycode 134 = Alt_R Meta_R Alt_R Meta_R I did this by identifying the keys using xev and the default modmap xmodmap -pke and swapping the keycodes. xev now identifies all my keys as correct, which is awesome! I can also use the correct keys to type the bar and less than symbols. (I followed this answer on askubuntu: How do I remap certain keys?) But it seems the change isn't very deep. For instance, the Super key is now broken in the Compiz Settings Manager. No shortcuts involving the Super key works (but the Alt key does). Also the settings dialog for Gnome Do doesn't heed the changes in xmodmap, and I can't open the Gnome Do window anymore if I use any of the remapped keys. So to summarize, everything broke. I would like a deeper way of telling Ubuntu (or any other Linux distro for that matter) which keys are which on the keyboard. Is there a way to edit the Keyboard Layout directly? I'm using the Norwegian Bokmål keyboard layout. Does it reside in a file somewhere I could edit? Any comments, previous experiences or relevant stray thoughts would be greatly appreciated - Thanks

• Keyboard not working 100% after Ubuntu 13.10 upgrade

  If this has already been asked, my apologies, I did not find it before writing this. So please do point me to the correct page. Anyway, I have this weird issue on my laptop right now. The keyboard is not functioning 100%. This means, I can type my login details to get into Ubuntu. I can type something on Dash. But other than this (on the desktop), no output from the keyboard when using all the other apps - as in I start to type and nothing comes out. The surprising thing is that when I shift to Guest session, the keyboard functions normally. When I shift to another TTY, like Alt+F5, keyboard works normally. This is the first time I've encountered this so far in my use of Linux. Keyboards normally never fail on any of the desktop environments I've used over the years. Any ideas what's happening? Could be the config files on my home is too messy already. I've upgraded this from 11.10 to 13.04, then now 13.10 without a re-install. Works fine so far, until now that I can't do much without a keyboard. Thanks in advance! P.S. Mouse and touchpad works fine.

• Enable [command] key to register as something other than just [ctrl]?

  I'm running 10.04LTS inside VMWare Fusion on a Mac. The [command] key (aka [windows] on many keyboards) is almost always behaving as if it was [ctrl], even though I done anything explicit to request that behavior. In fact, in SystemPreferencesKeyboardLayoutsOptionsAlt/Win key behavior, 'default' is chosen (rather than the 'Control is mapped to Win keys' option). However, choosing other options there do not seem to change the handling of [command], at least not as tested in the SystemPreferenceKeyboard Shortcuts app. (No matter what I've tried, [command]-x is always detected as [Ctrl]-x in that app.) I've tried: various options under SystemPreferencesKeyboardLayoutsOptionsAlt/Win key behavior toggling the VMWare Fusion Preferences KKeyboard & Mouse Key Mappings setup which claims to map '[command]' to '[windows]', and restarting the VM in each position the xmodmap lines suggested at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MappingWindowsKey And yet, it's clear that all Ubuntu apps aren't merging [ctrl] and [command], because in 'Terminal', [shift]-[ctrl]-c will Copy, but [shift]-[command]-c will not. If the [command]/[windows] key was recognized as anything else ('Super', 'Meta', 'Hyper'? I don't care as long as it's not 'Control'), then I could achieve my real goal (which happens to be enabling CMD-based cut/copy/paste in PyCharm, while leaving CTRL-X/etc available for emacs-like bindings). I think any solution which manages to make [command]-x appear as something other than [ctrl]-x in PreferencesKeyboard Shortcuts will probably do the trick.

• Can't access computer

  I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 on an Intel NUC and it won't boot! The last successful boot was earlier today but now each time I try it gets stuck on the Grub menu where it prompts for memory check etc. This is not a dual boot system, so this screen shouldn't ever appear, and it never has before. It's GRUB version 2.02~beta2-9, which is a little disconcerting, as I'm on the stable sources. Unfortunately the keyboard (I've tried 2 keyboards just in case) is not responding at this point in the boot process, so I can't select the "Ubuntu" menu option in Grub. The keyboard works during the bios stage, so I can configure it to boot from USB, and I tried a flash drive with 14.04 on it. The flash drive works in my laptop but is completely ignored by the NUC (I tried all 3 USB ports!). It seems that I have no way of getting into the machine at all! The Intel support site was my first option, but the site is down. I expect it's a long shot, but if anyone has any ideas I'd be very grateful.

• All downloads being interrupted

  System: Windows 7 Professional 64bit. 8GB RAM, Intel i5-2400 CPU, +300GB free on the hard drive. AVG Internet Security 2012 (enabled & disabled, with firewall enabled and disabled - no effect for either). This computer is less than a year old. Network: This problem is occurring on a single computer on a network with multiple computers. The router is a Motorola Netopia 3347-02 (DSL Modem/Wireless Router combined). The computer is plugged in directly to the modem, other computers are using the wireless successfully. The router has been reset. The only thing odd about the connection between the router and computer is that it is configured to allow RDP through, so it is assigned a static IP by the router and port forwarding is enabled for port 3389. Also, though I doubt it matters, a second wireless router is active behind this router providing a second network that some computers in the area use without issues. Details: All downloads initiated on this specific computer eventually fail, this includes streaming from youtube, specialized downloads (itunes), downloads from websites, FTP downloads, etc. Failure occurs with all browsers, but in chrome this is the process it takes: 1) Download begins normally, 2) At some point between (observed) 7MBs and 229MBs the download stops progressing (at this point, if watching chrome's task manager, you can see the network activity for the downloading tab drop to 0kps), 3) for some time the download sits there still attempting to complete, but will eventually display "123,049,871/0 B, Interrupted" (where the number is whatever it actually got to). The file I am using to test this is a very large .zip file located on a server I control, but the problem seems to occur on any site. The amount downloaded is completely random, and seems to be more time-based than anything (if I start a download immediately after the last one fails, it tends to get further than the last one). Small files can get through for this reason, though they can fail as well. In a test where I simultaneously downloaded the same file via HTTP (chrome) and FTP (windows explorer), both downloads failed at the same instant, though explorer displayed "Connection timed out" several minutes before chrome finally showed the download as interrupted. • NEC uPD720200 USB 3.0 not working on Ubuntu 12.04

  I've recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit on a HP Envy 15 1104tx. Most stuff appears to be working fine with the exception of the two USB3 ports (USB2 port works fine). I've read a lot of articles but so far have not been able to find a solution. I've tried adding 'pci=nomsi' to '/etc/default/grub' but this made no difference. Some articles suggest booting into Windows and upgrading the firmware on the uPD720200. Any body had any experience of this? Is there a way I can checked the firmware version of the NEC uPD720200 in Linux to see if there is an update available? • Why is my Internet connection randomly dropping?

  Ever since I have installed 12.04 (clean install not an upgrade), i have been having a drop in the Internet connection. The drop in the connection can be anything from 15 seconds to about 3 mins, and then the connection comes back. This behaviour happens while I am actively browsing the Internet, or if I wake up the computer and open Firefox (sometimes I have connection and sometimes I don't) . Please note that when the internet connection is on, it is not slow (as speedtest.net results show) In the beginning, I thought it was a problem with the driver r8169 for my RTL8111/8168B Ethernet card, so I downloaded the r8168 from Realtek website, followed the detailed instructions (blacklisted r8169, changed the file to '.bsh' ...), but still the same problem persisted. So I switched to a wireless connection, and I got the same problem with internet connection dropping randomly. Any ideas?
