• Kill UDP port that has no process?

  I can't bind to UDP port 500 from my code (yes I'm running w/ sudo). The port is reported as "already in use" (Mac os X), but doesn't have an associated process: $ sudo netstat -na | grep "udp.*\.500\>" udp4 0 0 192.168.50.181.500 *.* udp4 0 0 192.168.29.166.500 *.* But sudo lsof doesn't show a process on port 500 (ie sudo lsof -i:500 -P reports nothing). How can I unbind port 500 so I can use it again? I believe I have a bad VPN client that isn't cleaning up after itself, but I can't get rid of this without rebooting the machine.

• Remove Windows 7's limitation on number of concurrent tcp connections (http web requests)

  I have an application that tries to open as many http requests as possible (in order to stress test a proxy implementation) It seems to me that Win7 (SP1) may have a limitation on number of concurrent opened connection (it may be the so called half-open state if I'm not wrong). Is there something I can do for client ? and also I test using a vista PC that acts as a proxy server. It would be great if I could configure it to sustain at least 50 new connections initiated / second on client side and many more on server. I made the modification according to this technet article by setting TcpNumConnections = 150 but it doesn't make a difference. I still only see about 20 tcp sockets associated with my http client by using tcpview.

• Ubuntu 9.10 Dowload Speed Very Slow

  I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 desktop and I'm new to the Linux world, so bear with me. I'm on a corporate network of 3 T1s shared across 50-60 users. I typically get about 300 KB/sec for downloads, but for whatever reason, the Linux box will start out in that range, then drop to less than 1KB/Sec sometimes. Doesn't seen to matter where I'm downloading from. Right now I'm trying to get Eclipse for PHP and it's running at 3-6KB/sec. Getting the updates for the system will also drop to very slow rates. Our IT person has set up the machine to get the same 10.0.0.x address when it starts, and moved this IP to bypass our Proxy/Firewall going out, so that shouldn't be the issue. Can anyone recommend something I can try to better diagnose the problem. Again, I'm new to the Linux world and the hardware/OS setup side in general (coming form more of a coding background). Thanks for any advice.

  Does anyone know if it's possible to control the font size on videos played in the built-in iPhone video player? The subtitles (or "Closed Captions") that are there by default are rather small. • What can I do to configure my SSH such that it pauses for a flaky connection?

  I run ssh from OSX to a Ubuntu box - under home WIFI, everything works perfectly. However, when I ssh from certain external networks, ssh may be working fine for a minute or two and then drop due to a flaky network (diagnosed by pinging 8.8.8.8). How can I set up ssh so that it simply waits/pauses rather than drop (when dropping, I have to setup my development environment from scratch - a big hassle). EDIT When I say a bad connection, I mean, for example, ping 8.8.8.8 will work fine for a while, and then fail for 40-50 pings, and then come back on again.

• HTTP transfer speeds start fast then slows to a crawl

  We just got a new dedicated 1 gigabit server running IIS. The CPU is 15% or less, the RAM (4 GB total) has 3 GB unused... We are pushing 110 mbits per second... Speeds are really slow.. And, if fact, here's how it happens: We connect, and then the speeds are really fast, and quickly decline to 40 kBps or less. What's going on? It seems the server just wont go above 120 mbits per second. The files are all very large. 50 MB to 500 MB... Could this be a factor? Again, CPU, RAM, UI responsiveness when accessing remotely all seem fine.

  I have some spreadsheets where there are large number of cells that have essentially been used for free text. There is a finite set of values for this free text and most, if not all repeat. eg. A B C D 1 Monkey Gorilla Cat Dog 2 Dog Cat Gorilla Gorilla 3 Dog Dog Dog Cat There are probably 50 or so different cell values spread over multiple sheets and hundreds of rows and columns. I need to analyse this data and count occurancies, which is not a problem other than getting a list of unique values to start with and this has been driving me up the wall. What is the best way to produce this list. So from the above we would have Monkey Dog Cat Gorilla In order of preferred solutions, as this will need to be done monthly. • How to install Windows 8 boot manager in a different partition?

  the last time i installed Windows 7, the boot manager automatically got installed in a small hidden partition, and the main os into another partition. So, formatting the c: won't affect the boot manager. yesterday i wiped and repartitioned my hdd like this: 50mb primary ntfs (meant for boot manager) 100gb primary ntfs (for win 8) 50gb primary ntfs (for win 7) some logical partitions to install ubuntu and other os i installed win 7 and then win 8, and now there is no os choosing menu. system directly boots win 8 and the 50 mb partition is empty. There is a way to boot Windows 7 and even Ubuntu directly from the Windows boot manager with EasyBCD. But How do i put the boot manager in the 50mb partition ?

• Throwing TRIM support in Ubuntu guest at Win7-Virtualbox host

  I have VirtualBox 4.1.14 on Windows 7 as host, and Ubuntu server 11.10 as guest. System was installed at traditional HDD years ago (and upgraded later), but now it's at SSD as expanding drive. There is "AHCI" and "it's SSD" features enabled in SATA controller. Problem is, this expanding drive growth to it's almost max size (90% of it), but actually in VM only about 50% spent. Also, guest VM does not recognize /dev/sda as SSD, /sys/block/sda/queue/rotational says "1", /sys/block/sda/queue/discard_* all says "0". And, of course, I cannot run fstrim /, it says that operation not supported. Is there some trick to enable TRIM support in my guest system without reinstalling it?

• Printing Booklet Page Size in Adobe Reader 4-in-1

  So I have a 70 page pdf document that I'm trying to condense to a small booklet. I tried creating a formula to manually to perform it but it got ugly fast. 35,36,34,37,17,54,16,55,33,38,32,39,15,56,14,57,31,40,30,41,13,58,12,59 29,42,28,43,11,60,10,61,27,44,26,45,9,62,8,63,25,46,24,47,7,64,6,65 23,48,22,49,5,66,4,67,21,50,20,51,3,68,2,69,19,52,18,53,1,70 Once I print the booklet I should be able to cut the sheets in half and set the bottom half behind the top and staple it for a simple book. Which means Page 1 should have pages 35,36,17,54,34,37,16,55 Page 2 should have pages 33,38,15,56,32,39,14,57 And several pages later Page 9 should have pages 19,52,1,70,18,53 But manually doing this is a headache and it seems like the booklet function should contain functionality that can perform this. • Can I use my Belkin router as a repeater?

  I've got a brand new, unopened Belkin N600 DB router (yay 50% off sale), and I can't seem to figure out if I can use it as a repeater. As far as I can tell, it doesn't support DD-WRT or Tomato, but I'm wondering if there may be some way to rig it up to repeat Wifi. Also, I really need to know before I open it, because, being a bit tight on money at the moment, I'll probably sell it if I can't use it as a repeater. Finally, two caveats: I can't use the other wireless router for anything other than broadcasting straight from the modem (parents are paranoid about anything technological). I can't run ethernet to the second router due to the layout of the house. Thanks so much for the help everyone--if I'm being vague, tell me! EDIT: Also, the manual here is pretty useless on this topic as far as I can tell.

• Where to look for regular scripts?

  It seems to me that our server freezes every 30 days around noon due to the huge utilization of xvda data transfer partition - writes are 50 times higher than normally (according to the health monitor in plesk). This seems to me as the reason why the apache & co becomes instable as (for example) all apache's processes are waiting to write their log (according to the service's full status). I am, however, unable to find any scheduled task that would be executed during that period. I have checked both cron and anacron setup and there is only one monthly anacron task which is not executed (according to the /var/log/cron - and there is nothing unusual) around noon. Are there any other places where to look for periodical processes? (I am just about to ask server's provider the same question about any external maintenance run around this time but I don't expect them to run anything time/resource consuming during the day.)

  I manage a number of linux fileservers. These all run applications written from 0-10 years ago. As sometimes happens, a machine will come close to, or run out of disk space. Reasons include applications not rotating log files, a machine with 500GB of disk producing 150GB of new files every month that were not written to tape, databases gradually increasing in size, people doing silly things...generally a bit of chaos. Anyway, when a machine unexpectedly goes from 50% to 100% full in a couple of hours, I figure out what broke (lots of "du") and delete files or contact someone. I also can look at cacti graphs to figure out what the machine's normal disk usage is (e.g. for /home). Does anyone know of any tools that will give finer grained information on historial usage than a cacti/RRD graph? Like "/home/abc/xyz increased 50GB in the last day".

  consider a disk with a sector size of 512 bytes, 2000 tracks/surface, 50 sectors/track, 5 doubled sided platters, average seek time is 10 msec. Assume a block size of 1024-byte is selected. Assume a file that contains 100,000 records of 100-byte each is to be stored on the disk, and NONE of the reocd can be spanned 2 blocks. How many blocks are needed to store the entire file?? If the file is arranged sequentially on disk, how many surfaces are required?? Now, i have calculated that 10,000 blocks are needed to store 100,000 records. But i am not sure how to find out the answer of the surfaces required. I only calculated the capacity of track is 25KB and capacity of surface is 50,000 KB But I don't know how to calculate the number of surfaces... Could anyone help me how to get the answer?   "Deshaking" means fixing the video captured from camera hold in hands. Is there open source video deshaker apart from y4mstabilizer from mjpegtools? Patch for mencoder is preferred. My current command line for processing video looks like: mplayer video_from_camera.avi -nosound -vo yuv4mpeg:file=/dev/stdout -really-quiet | y4mstabilizer -n -a 0.8 -r 30 -s 100 | mplayer -cache 1000 /dev/stdin -noconsolecontrols -vf crop=500:380:70:50,denoise3d=3:3:5:5 -vo yuv4mpeg:file=temporary.yuv y4mstabilizer is itself very unstable and often crashes (and it didn't work at all until I have patched memory allocation in it).

• SSH disconnects active session after 20 minutes

  I’ve just set up a new Linux box (OpenSuSE 12.3 on VmWare). Now I stated that my SSH shell sessions are disconnected exactly after 20 minutes, clearly with activity. (Putty: “Network error: Software caused connection abort”) I already set Putty to send keep alives every 64 sec. In sshd_config, I set ClientAliveInterval 50 ClientAliveCountMax 2 and did a deamon reload. Didn’t help. About two minutes after the link breakdown, ssh reports to /var/log/messages: … … sshd[…]: Timeout, client not responding. … … sshd[…]: pam_unix(sshd:session): session closed for user root I don’t encounter this behaviour when connecting to other virtual machines, so I guess the problem isn’t in the network. Any help is appreciated.

Is it better to send all the email corresponding to a domain through only one account? I mean, now I'm sending each message authenticating to the relay host with the sender credentials. Example: If I have 5 email accounts and I send 10 simultaneous messages from each account, How many times is postfix login to the relay host if I have sender dependant authentication? 5 times? once for each sender 50 times? once for each message If I send all the messages corresponding to one realy host through one account, how many times does postfix login to the relay host? only once? • Easy to use database with views for a medical student doing research?

  I'm having trouble finding a tool that does this for my friend (without designing it myself). What is needed is a simple program with a database where input forms and views can be designed and saved. A patient table might consist of, say, 50 columns, so it is imperative that it is possible to make columns be able to default, say, through a form for submission of data. By views I mean something like "saved selections" based on various criteria (WHERE runny_nose=True...) but as friendly as possible to save, and export options would be nice. Does this exist at all? It seems at one hand trivial and on the other, my Google fu is failing.

  We are configuring a linux box that will act as internet gateway for an office of 30-50 computers. We are using iptables/HTB for traffic shaping. Is there a way to match traffic on L7 level? It's easy to identify traffic by TCP/UDP ports (like SIP and HTTP). But what if we are dealing with Skype & BitTorent? It was surprise for me that there is no powerful and matured sulution for tasks like this. I found only l7-filter (http://l7-filter.clearfoundation.com/) patch for the Linux kernel, but it's no longer supported (it seems to). Moreover it couldn't be compiled with modern Linux kernels. The only option I found was to use a Cisco router. Are there other ways to identify and shape Skype and Bittorent traffic?

• Is there a software in windows that enables you to boot from a specific partition?

  I use acronis true image to mount images to my primary partition and it works great. lets say I have 3 partitions on my hard disk and all of them each is 600 GB. In the 3rd partition I keep files (documents, pictures etc), on the first partition is my primary partition where the operating system runs (windows 7). And in the 2nd partition is empty. I have an image of my primary partition and I save that image in my 3rd partition (50 GB is the size of the image so it fits in the partition number 3) and in an external hard drive. I know it is possible to install a new operating system in partition 2 such as windows xp but the only problem is that once I install that how could I tell the computer to boot from partition 1? is there a way to switch back and forth just like it's possible in the mac?

  How would I go about allowing a 'domain user' to install software on their computer. I have active directory and group policy in place. Is there a setting in group policy that would allow this? I don't really want to make the domain users domain admins as well. There is a way to do this by adding the user to their local admins group under computer management. • Monitor sometimes display weird colors and lines when opening a website that contains a video

  This happens 1/50 times when I open a website that contains a video. I don't know if it happens when I open a flash video, but I am sure it has happened when I've opened a HTML5 video. When it happens I have about 2-3 seconds to press Alt + F4 (to close my browser). If I do it in time the screen will get back to normal. If I wait too long to press Alt + F4, maybe 3+ seconds, my screen won't get back to normal when I press Alt + F4. However, when I get stuck in the weird screen I can do all types of things on the computer. the whole computer does not freeze, because if I for example press Win + L I will hear the Windows logout sound. • Why does everybody have the same MAC address as me?

  I just bought some consumer-grade McCheap PCI-E NICs (and this was a bad idea). They both have the same MAC address. When I google it, it seems like every card of that company has the same address: 00:50:43:00:45:3e. Shouldn't they be unique? According to lspci it's a Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 20). Is there a way to permanently flash a new address?

• IIS 7 Application Pools using a different amount of memory on multiple servers behind a load balancer

  We have 6 servers in a web farm behind an F5. There are approximately 25 AppPools on each of these servers. On servers 1 - 5 the apppools are consuming approx 500MB Private Bytes, and 5GB Virtual Bytes. On server 6 the apppools are consuming approx 800MB Private Bytes, and 8GB Virtual Bytes. I can not seem to figure out why we have this difference. The code is the exact same on each box. We replicate the apphost.config between the boxes, so the Appplication Configs are identical. The only difference seems to be that this box consumes more RAM, and in turn ends up using a lot more CPU. During Black Friday we observed the CPU on server 6 spiking to 100% and noticed that the % Memory Commit was also near 100%, while the rest of the farm was at closer to 50% utilization. Pulling the 6th server from the load balancer dropped CPU/Memory on the 6th server back to normal, and did not cause a noticeable strain on the other servers.
