• Fixing Floating Point Error

  I have some code that gets the leading value (non-zero) of a Double using normal math instead of String Math... For Example: 0.020 would return 2 3.12 would return 3 1000 should return 1 The code I have at the moment is: LeadingValue := Trunc(ResultValue * Power(10, -(Floor(Log10(ResultValue))))) However when ResultValue is 1000 then LeadingValue ends up as 0. What can I do to fix this problem I'm assuming is being caused by floating point errors? Thanks.

What setting changes the colors of these boxes? Preferrably, I'd like to change the background color to something darker, but if that's not possible at least I want to change the text color.

• Trouble reinstalling Gem after failure

  Yesterday I tried to install Jeweler via Rubygems, however somewhere in the middle of the process I had a power failure, resulting in my computer turning off in the middle of the installation process. Once I got it back up, I tried to reinstall Jeweler, however resulting in an error I've had trouble decoding. Does anyone have any idea on how to fix this problem? Theoretically, this would lower fragmentation at the cost of higher worst-case memory consumption, but does the OS already have redundant behavior with this technique, or does it do its best to conserve memory? My initial thought was to call nextDouble and multiply by n, but once n gets to be larger than 253, the results would no longer be uniformly distributed. • Looking for a fast hash-function.

  Hello, I'm looking for a special hash-function. Let's say I have a large list of strings, if I order them by their hash-values they should be ordered quasi randomly. The most important point is: it must be super fast. I've tried md5 and sha1 and they're using to much cpu power. Clashes are not a problem. • What's the big deal with brute force on hashes like MD5

  I just spent some time reading http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2768248/is-md5-really-that-bad (I highly recommend!). In it, it talks about hash collisions. Maybe I'm missing something here, but can't you just encrypt your password using, say, MD5 and then, say, SHA-1 (or any other, doesn't matter.) Wouldn't this increase the processing power required to brute-force the hash and reduce the possibility of collision?
