• error in IIS7 but not on IIS6

  I have a website that is we are now deploying to windows 2008 servers that has worked in the past on IIS6 without a problem. It is using .net 2 framework. Most of the website works. • MMC crashes on Windows Server 2008 x64 - Exchange console, event viewer

  Help! I don't know what happened; this server has been very reliable but suddenly began having problems with a particular .NET 2.0 web site simply hanging - it wouldn't load at all. However, another ASP.NET site was still fine. Reinstalling the site didn't fix it, nor did deleting and re-creating the application within IIS. Trying the event viewer was met with a horrifying "Microsoft Management Console has stopped working". Some Googling led me to believe the .NET framework was the problem. I found a tool called the .NET cleanup tool - http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/pages/8904493.aspx - which cleaned out .NET entirely. I reinstalled .NET 1.1 and 3.5 (which installed 2.0 and 3.0 as well). Using the .NET verification tool - http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/pages/8999004.aspx - I believe these have all installed ok. However, my server is in worse shape now. The Exchange 2010 Management Console crashes with an MMC error and now my other (previously reliable) .NET web app now hangs on loading too. I thought I should use Computer Management to remove and re-add the application and web server roles but sure enough, MMC crashes. If anyone can help I will be extremely grateful. Thank you !

  I am trying to extract information from the call log of the android. I am getting the call date that is one month back from the actual time of call. I mean to say that the information extracted by my code for the date of call is one mont back than the actual call date. I have the following in the Emulator: I saved a contact. Then I made a call to the contact. Code: I have 3 ways of extracting call Date information but getting the same wrong result. • Visual C# GUI Designer - Recommended way of removing generated event handler-code & basic tutorial

  Hi, I'm new to the Visual C# designer so these are general and pretty basic question on how to work with the designer. When we for instance add a label to a form and then double-click on it in the Visual C# designer (I'm using Microsoft Visual C# 2008 Express Edition), the following things happen: The designer generates code within Form1.Designer.cs (assume default names for simplicity) to add the label, then with the double-click it will add the event handler label1_Click to the label within Form1.Designer.cs, using the following code this.label1.Click += new System.EventHandler(this.label1_Click); and it adds the event handler method to Form1.cs private void label1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { } If I now remove the label only the code within Form1.Designer.cs will be removed but the label1_Click method will stay within Form1.cs even if it isn't used by anything else. But if I'm using reset within Properties-Events for the Click-event from within the designer even the label1_Click method in Form1.cs will be removed. 1.) Isn't that a little inconsistent behavior? 2.) What is the recommended way of removing such generated event handler-code? 3.) What is the best "mental approach"/best practice for using the designer? I would approach it by mental separation in the way that Form1.cs is 100% my responsibility and that on the other hand I'm not touching the code in Form1.Designer.cs at all. Does that make sense or not? Since sometimes the designer removes sth. from Form1.cs I'm not sure about this. 4.) Can you recommend a simple designer tutorial that assumes no Visual C# designer knowledge but expects/doesn't explain C#.   I've got some code running in the iPad Simulator.  One thing I discovered is that an application has to be compiled against a specific version of the SDK.  When I created a new iPad application, the updated iPad window for the Interface Builder became availble.  Very nice indeed.  Everything was the same as before, so that was good.  I fired up the iPad Simulator, and I got this below:   The next step was getting my app on there, which was easy.  Then I got my app running on the simulator, and I saw this: Basically, everything is filled with goodness and seems to be running correctly.  **fingers crossed**

Security Improvements for the HtmlEditorExtender Unfortunately, in the previous release, we made the HtmlEditorExtender too secure! We upgraded the version of the Microsoft Anti-Cross Site Scripting Library included in the Ajax Control Toolkit to the latest version (version 4.2.1) and the latest version turned out to be way too aggressive about stripping HTML. It not only strips dangerous tags such as <script> tags, it also strips innocent tags such as <b> tags. When the latest version of the Microsoft Anti-Cross Site Scripting Library is used with the HtmlEditorExtender, the library strips all rich content from the HtmlEditorExtender control which defeats the purpose of using the control. Therefore, we had to find a replacement for the Microsoft Anti-Cross Site Scripting Library. In this release, we’ve created a new HTML sanitizer built on the HTML Agility Pack. If you were using the AntiXssSanitizerProvider then you will need to substitute the HtmlAgilityPackSanitizerProvider. In particular, you need to modify the sanitizer sections in your Web.config file like this: <configuration> <configSections> <sectionGroup name="system.web"> <section name="sanitizer" requirePermission="false" type="AjaxControlToolkit.Sanitizer.ProviderSanitizerSection, AjaxControlToolkit" /> </sectionGroup> </configSections> <system.web> <sanitizer defaultProvider="HtmlAgilityPackSanitizerProvider"> <providers> <add name="HtmlAgilityPackSanitizerProvider" type="AjaxControlToolkit.Sanitizer.HtmlAgilityPackSanitizerProvider"></add> </providers> </sanitizer> </system.web> </configuration> We made one other backwards-breaking change to improve the security of the HtmlEditorExtender. If you disable HTML sanitization then you are making your website an easy target for Cross-Site Scripting attacks. Am I correct about why hibernate is using so much memory? • Application for taking pretty screenshots (like OS X does)

  I've been building a website for a guy who uses Mac OS X and occasionally he sends me screenshots of bugs. They come out looking like this: This is fairly typical of Mac screenshots. You get the window decorations, the shadow from the window and a white or transparent background (not the desktop wallpaper -- I've checked). Compare this to an Ubuntu window-shot (Alt+Print screen): It's impossible to keep a straight face and say the Ubuntu one anywhere near as elegant. My question is: Is there an application that can do this in Ubuntu? Edit: Follow up: Is there an application that can do this in one move? Shutter is pretty good but running the plugin for every screenshot is pretty tiresome as it doesn't seem to remember my preference (I want south-shadow and that requires selecting south, then clicking refresh, then save) and it's more clicks than I'd like. Is there a simple way of telling shutter I want south-shadow for all screenshots (except entire desktop and area-selection)?

• ExceptionPolicy.HandleException does not install Event Source for Logging in Registry if XBAP run ou

  I am using the Logging Application Block (of Microsoft Enterprise Library) to log exceptions in the Event Viewer that occur in my WPF XBAP application. If I run the XBAP in the debugger from Visual Studio, an Event Source entry for my application is automatically created in the Registry at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\Application\MyApp This occurs at the point ExceptionPolicy.HandleException() is called. However, if I run the XBAP outside of the IDE directly from the file system or from its published location, the Registry entry isn't added. Therefore, no logging takes place. I can only assume this is a security issue with running XBAP applications and they do not have access to write to the Registry. Is this a setting within my project? Any idea on why this might be happening? Any help much appreciated.

• Wrong perspective is showing in Eclipse plugin project [closed]

  I am working in Eclipse Modeling Framework (Eclipse plugin development) in my project the tool(project i am working) provides three perspectives. 1.Accelerator Analyst perspective 2.Contract Validation and 3.Underwriter rules Editor... By default it starts with Contract validation perspective (As we define it within the plugin_customization.ini). However after switching to other perspective does not change the perspective shown... As all perspective (Class, Id and Name) is define only inside Plugin.XML as it is the task of org.eclipse.ui.perspective that that perspective name should be come forefront. Out of 10 7 times it is working fine but I am not getting why this is not working in that 3 cases.   I've been having some intermittent dns problems with a web server, where certain isp's dns servers don't have my hostnames in cache and fail to look them up. At the same time, queries to opendns for those hostnames resolve correctly. It's intermittent, and it always works fine for me, so it's hard to identify the problem when someone reports connectivity problems to my site. In trying to figure this out, I've been looking at my logs to see if there are any errors I should know about. There are thousands of records in my logs, all requesting "burningpianos", some for com and some for org, most looking for an mx record. There are requests from multiple ip's, but each ip will request hundreds of times per day. So this smells to me like an attack. What is the defense against this?

• Alternatives to Splunk?

  I'm pretty impressed with Splunk, especially version 4. Pretty graphs, alerting (Enterprise only), and fast, accurate, searching. It's a great product. However, the cost just way too high to consider for full production use for our company. All we really need is to be able to index different logs in a central place, and have reasonable searching on that. Having alerts based on a saved search is also really nice. We don't really go beyond that. In fact, our biggest usage has been in deploying new applications. Everything gets logged via log4net to either the Event log on Windows or a text file on Linux. Splunk makes it pretty easy to quickly search across those to make sure all the parts of the app are working ok -- that's saved us tons of time versus hunting down individual logging sources. What alternatives exist in this market? I have a sinking feeling Splunk's pricing is so high because they have the best product by far, and they know it. We want the server to run on Windows. I'd be open to a split model, using one product for general logs (collect via syslog/Snare), and a dedicated product for our custom apps (like Log4Net Dashboard). Would using a simple syslog server such as Kiwi, sent to SQL Server (perhaps with fulltext enabled) work? I'd hope the cost should be well under 5 figures, USD. (And yes, I know, we're cheap. We're a startup with little money, and BizSpark takes care of all our MS licensing.) Edit: I should add, we have about 10 physical servers, 20 VMs, and a couple firewalls and switches. 90% is Windows.

• Postback event not firing on FIRST button click..

  Hi, I have a form which accepts two arguments. The first one is mode - this is either view, new or edit. If it is new then the second argument is type - this is either range, collection or design. When set to new, and the type is valid, a new instance of that type is created and the data from the form is added to it. The item (range, collection or design) then validates the data. If any of the data is invalid then it throws an error, and this error is displayed at the top of the form telling the user why it is invalid. A variable, _Databind, is set to false so that it does not change the data input by the user (in the form fields). The button used to submit the button is called btnSave, and is created in the html source. The click event is wired up in the form Protected Sub Blah(sender, e) Handles btnSave.Click. Strangely, whenever I edit an item that already exists the form submits fine the first time - the click event is fired. However when in "new" mode I have to click the button twice to fire the event. It also blanks all the form fields out on first click. I have even put a Response.Write("Hello World") line at the start of the click event - this is not being output on first click when adding a new item either. It is on first load when the mode is set to edit however. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing it to behave this way? Thanks in advance for any help. Regards, Richard
