  • Can I format a usb stick on windows xp, in HFS+ format, and make the usb stick mac os x bootable?

    My Intel Mac OS X computer is corrupt and I feel, at this point, I need to perform a fresh install of the OS. It consistently and automatically logs out, right after I log in. I tried logging in as the root. I tried safe boot and it wouldn't load. Anyway, the point is I want put the Mac OS X installer on a USB thumb drive and have it boot up on the Intel Mac OS X computer. Unfortunately, the computer is inaccessible, as I mentioned above. So, I have a Windows XP machine that I'm using and attempting to create a bootable USB thumb drive that's compatible with Mac OS X. I have tried transmac, macdrive, and paradox for windows -- all of which proved unable to format the usb stick in HFS+. How do I know this? Well, even though the Transmac reports that's been formatted to HFS+, Computer Management in Windows says otherwise: I even put the installer on the usb drive, after transmac reportedly formatted it properly, and the mac os x computer didn't even recognize that a USB thumb drive was inserted, via pressing the option key at boot-up time. I'm not sure what the problem is and how to actually format the drive. Can anybody offer any help? I would appreciate it. Thank you.

  • GRUB having problems with my sda1 UUID

    I was having trouble trying to setup triple boot on my computer... (Take a look at this thread if you think it would help). I ended up by having a GRUB menu that has Ubuntu entries and "Windows" entry, that calls an EasyBCD menu to choose between Windows 7 and XP. Everything would be fine if, only if, GRUB was set up correctly. I can't find why, but it throws me this when I try to open Ubuntu: I've already tried to remove the menu.lst and do a grub-update, and a grub-install too. I tried to create a symlink to /dev/sda1 at /dev/disk/by-uuid/<<uuid that is there>>, just like the other UUIDs that were there... But I couldn't find that symlink at that busybox that opened when it thrown me the error. Any ideas?   • Windows 7 not booting after failed SRT (SSD caching) install

    This is a fairly new computer, only about a month old. i7 2700k, z68 motherboard, with a 1.5tb WD black HD, and a 128gb crucial M4 ssd. I followed the instructions for setting up ssd caching, the SATA controller was set to RAID, I installed the intel software and enabled acceleration and it said everything went fine. But when I went to reboot, I received the lovely "Reboot and Select proper Boot device" error message. I checked the bios, and it was booting from the correct HD (I tried the only other option anyway just in case, it was the ~50 odd gb of unformatted space left on the SSD) AFter that I entered the raid until (ctrl-i at boot) and removed the acceleration and deleted the raid array (because it was being used as a cache this was non destructive) Still no boot. So I reinstalled win7 directly on the SSD, booted, and checked the HDD to make sure it hadn't been wiped. It hadn't, all the files were still there, including all the windows stuff. I backed up my data to an external drive just in case, but I'd really like to get this install booting again. I trawled the webs a bit, and have tried entering recovery mode and using the bootrec.exe and bootsect.exe to fix it, but to be honest I'm not sure what I'm doing with those. My question is basically: How do I make my harddrive bootable again?

    I am trying to pxe-boot a machine (client), and in the process I am trying to setup a tftp server that this machine can boot off. On the server, which runs Ubuntu 10.10, I have setup dhcp, dns, nfs, and tftp-hpa servers. All the servers/deamons start fine. I tested the tftp server by using a tftp client and downloading a file that the server directory hosts.     I had Windows Vista Home Premium on HP pavilion desktop. I partitioned the disk for Ubuntu and a swap disk partition and then I installed Ubuntu 10.04. When I would start my computer, I would be given a choice to start Windows or Ubuntu. Today I reinstalled Windows, and now the menu has disappeared. I don't see in windows the disk partition that I allocated to Ubuntu, so it means Ubuntu still exist but I can't load it. What can I do ?

  • Laptop with Intel Graphics: external VGA monitor only gets signal on boot (no "hot plugging")

    I am able to get an external VGA monitor (or projector) to work if I start my laptop with it connected. However, if I start the laptop with it disconnected there is no signal on the external. The Displays screen shows the external, and thinks that it is active, but there is no signal being sent to it. This has been a persistent problem since 10.04 (I am now on 12.04.... each upgrade hoping something is improved). I should note that even when it works (starting with display connected), Displays still says the monitor is "unknown" (but it sends the signal). For the correct resolution to display, I have had to add a few xrandr lines for my monitor to my .xprofile file... otherwise resolution is limited to default 1024x768. So, resolution issues can be worked around, but the main issue is that the external doesn't get a signal without starting the machine with it connected.   • Desktop icons disappears when Nautilus is launched, until next boot

    What happens: When I log in into my Ubuntu everything is normal, I have some icons on my desktop and I can see them at this point of time. As soon as I click on the explorer (nautilus) on the Launcher bar, everything goes (disappers) and never comes. No matter how many time you click on the launcher, you can't open nautilus. Additional Information: Another thing I have noticed that when I want to open the location of PDF file I am reading in document viewer (by clicking the folder icon). It gives error "Could not open the containing folder" and "Failed to execute child process "nautilus" (Permission denied)". Any idea?

    I've installed Ubuntu server 10.04 and then installed Gnome desktop on top of it, because I am new to Linux and its command line, I need the GUI desktop to help me get around. However, the problem I got is that the server doesn't boot into the GUI desktop when powered on. It's booting into a shell like this: Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems: - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline) - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enought?) - check root= (did the system wait for the right device?) - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev) ALERT! /dev/mapper/cecdata-root does not exist. Dropping to a shell! BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu11) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.   • Where do I find a color profile for my MacBook Pro display?

    I installed Windows 7 on my MacBook Pro, overwriting OSX Lion. The screen has a blue tint due to lack of a calibrated color profile. I once used the "Color LCD" ICC profile from the OSX partition and it worked great, but I've since lost it since I decided to overwrite OSX completely. I tried the manual calibration in Windows 7 but I just can't seem to get it right like it was while using the color profile that was on the OSX partition. All Google tells me is where to find the ICC profile in OSX, and to copy it over. Do I have to reinstall OSX just for the color profile? Even if I do, where does the profile actually come from? Is it on the OSX disk, or is it somehow retrieved from the hardware itself? Is there a way to get it without reinstalling OSX? Thanks!

  • Laptop freezes on boot, not sure where to start

    I have an Ubuntu laptop that stops responding when booting up. It will change between consoles with ctrl-alt-FN but pressing enter in the console would not even enter a blank line. The last printed line when booting up in recovery mode was "Skipping EDID probe due to cached edid". Any ideas what might be wrong? Pressing ctrl-alt-del successfully rebooted it when in that mode. Another symptom is that GRUB stopped booting automatically, not sure if related (I doubt it).

    How do I create a system-wide autostart file? This would be on a cloud server running the desktop version of Maverick. I logged in as root and created an autostart file using System/Preferences/StartupApplications but it ended up in /root/.config/autostart and did not execute (as far as I can tell) upon rebooting. The autostart file is to invoke a bash script that invokes the VNC server. I copied the .desktop autostart file from /root/.config/autostart to /etc/xdg/autostart and rebooted. This did not seem to make a difference.

    Possible Duplicate: My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it? i tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 64Bit, 12.10 32 and 64Bit, but it doesn't work. I'm used the Ubuntu 12.04 32Bit Start Disc Creator and also Unetboot on Win7, the installation-process are finished and i restart without the Stick. I can choose for example 12.10 and it starts writing "start ... [OK], ...", but then it hangs most on "Stop Kernel Messages [OK]". Then i can only shutdown normal the system and it writes stopping, shutdown and something like that. I am use an Aspire One D270 Netbook with Intel Atom N2600. It also doesn't work to try Ubuntu 12.10 from running on USB Stick. It starts, but then its black and the cursor blink on the left upside. Please can you help me? :(

    Is there a difference between wubi install and doing an install of Ubuntu alongside windows7? I ask because I used wubi, but I'm having trouble with certain things like being unable to change my brightness settings and I'm wondering if installing from a usb drive would change anything. Also, I've tried to do a usb drive install, but it doesn't give me the option to install alongside, it only shows the "Replace Windows 7" and "something else" options. Is this because I already did a wubi install?

    so I am using ubuntu 11.10, just changed from windows to ubuntu, and one of my file systems, I accidentally set it up as a linux swap partition and now I want to acces my files, as I did in windows, but I do not know any secure way to change that partition to a file system without formating it and loosing the data. Because I do not want to loose the data I have there. Does deleting the partition and mounting it again solve the problem?

Although I've tried many things : reinstall apache2 run update-rc.d apache2 enable But each time the apache2 is not start after boot time : I get nothing with a pgrep apache2 or a ps -e | grep apache2 UPDATE I've also tried the logging tweak suggested in another related post, but no entries at all can be found in /var/log/syslog What could I do to make it work ?   • Boot Toshiba Portege M200 with no CD drive

    This has not CD drive and I would like to boot to Acronis to reload from an image that I created. I don't know how else to get the OS and all the drivers loaded. It doesn't seem to have Toshiba hidden boot partion on the HD. It doesn't seem to recognize my USB external CD drive or my USB flash drive. Any ideas? Paul

  • Fails to boot after upgrade, stuck on winbind package

    I started the upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 last night. Once it got the installing packages part I left the computer unattended the rest of the night. When I checked it this morning the screen was blank and I couldn't get it to turn on. So I cycled power, and now I get the "Ubuntu 11.10" screen with the dots underneath, but then it gets to a blank screen and nothing more. I can get to the command line in recovery mode; here's a list of the things I've tried so far sudo apt-get update - the very first repository it checked sat at 0% for a long time (network cable is plugged in), so I cancelled with Ctrl+C Thought it might be a problem with display drivers, so I tried sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx - this gave me an error saying dpkg has been interrupted, manually run sudo dpkg --configure -a sudo dpkg --configure -a this installed / updated a bunch of stuff but got stuck at Starting Winbind daemon winbind Restarted and tried sudo dpkg --configure -a again but it gets stuck at same Windbind step What else can I do to fix this problem?

  • Presario r3000 hangs on boot to Ubuntu 12.04

    I have a Compaq Presario r3000 laptop with Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit. 1.2GB RAM, with a nvidia Gforce 420 Go with 32MB RAM. It hangs on bootup about 3 out of 4 times at either the purple screen, or with a cursor in the upper left corner. Booting without a splash screen shows it hanging after attempting to initialize the floppy controller. Unity has never booted to 3D either, only 2D, with the additional drivers always failing to install. I searched all over this board and found similar issues, and tried everything there. Extensive vid driver install and uninstalls. Network issues that I've since resolved. I even found a very similar topic with a fix that didn't work. I'll probably try a clean install today (given how much I've probably messed up), and I would really appreciate any ideas. I'm fairly new to Ubuntu, so if you would like to see any error logs or configs, please walk me through exactly how to get and post them here. Thanks.
