• Best way to let users choose country/language when submiting an URL to a directory

  I want to offer the user the possibility to add the country/language for websites they would submit to a fairly simple website directory. I have a folder with flags from http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/flags/ . The flag images are named according to the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes, meaning that I could make a PHP script that would be able to retrieve images and the name of the country retrieved from the image name (not the full name, but it wouldn't be necessary). Just to make things clearer, I couldn't find a proper combo-box jQuery plugin for my needs (that would act exactly like the native but with an icon before the text) and don't really have the time to develop one on my own. Considering the number of images, I also wouldn't just display them all with a radio box near them. Also, having a classic drop-down list would be a nightmare for me as I would have to assign the short country name manually to each entry, or do it once for every country. Offering the user a dropdown list with the short country names but no flag near them would also be unfriendly and confusing. The idea is that every website featured in the directory would have the country flag icon near it. I have the images named properly but I don't know how to let the user choose the right image for their website. Any idees? Thank you all in advance! • Simple collision detection for pong

  I'm making a simple pong game, and things are great so far, but I have an odd bug which causes my ball (well, it's a box really) to get stuck on occasion when detecting collision against the ceiling or floor. It looks as though it is trying to update too frequently to get out of the collision check. Basically the box slides against the top or bottom of the screen from one paddle to the other, and quickly bounces on and off the wall while doing so, but only bounces a few pixels from the wall. What can I do to avoid this problem? It seems to occur at random. • Good 2D Platformer Physics

  I have a basic character controller set up for a 2D platformer with Box2D, and I'm starting to tweak it to try to make it feel good. Physics engines have a lot of knobs to tweak, and it's not clear to me, writing with a physics engine for the first time, which ones I should use. Should jumping apply a force for several ticks? An impulse? Directly set velocity? How do I stop the avatar from sticking to walls without taking away all its friction (or do I take away all the friction, but only in the air)? Should I model the character as a capsule? A box with rounded corners? A box with two wheels? Just one big wheel? I feel like someone must have done this before! There seem to be very few resources available on the web that are not "baby's first physics", which all cut off where I'm hoping someone has already solved the issues. Most examples of physics engines for platformers have floaty-feeling controls, or in-air jumps, or easily exploitable behavior when temporary penetration is too high, etc. Some examples of what I mean: A short tap of jump jumps a short distance; a long tap jumps higher. Short skidding when stopping or reversing directions at high velocity. Standing stably on inclines (but maybe sliding down them when ducking). Analog speed when using an analog controller. All the other things that separate good platformers from bad platformers. Dare I suggest, stable moving platforms? I'm not really looking for "hey, do this." Obviously, the right thing to do is dependent on what I want in the game. But I'm hoping someone somewhere has gone through the possibilities and said "well technique A does feature X well, technique B does Y well, but that doesn't work with C", or has some worked examples beyond "if (key == space) character.impulse(0, 1)"

• Can't complete dropbox installation from behind proxy in Ubuntu 11.10

  Problem: My PC on campus sits behind a proxy (requiring authentication) and I can't setup Dropbox. I am convinced that this is a proxy issue as I can't setup Ubuntu one either (but I don't use Ubuntu One so that is not a problem). I have looked at the Ubuntu One fix but it seems to be to modify settings explicitly related to Ubuntu One. I can install the nautilus-dropbox package (compiled from source and from .deb package from website and from software centre) but once I click OK from the "Dropbox Installation" dialog box (prompting me to download the proprietary daemon) the installation just freezes with the OK button pressed. When I look at its process in System Monitor its waiting channel is inet_wait_for_connect. I have set the following proxy directives thus far: Added mj22:**@proxy.waikato.ac.nz:80 information to network proxy settings under network in settings. Added http_host and http_port variables under gconf-editor-system-proxy Added 'host', 'authentication_password' 'authentication_user' and ticked 'user authentication' and 'use_http_proxy' under gconf-editor-system-http_proxy Added export http_proxy="http://mj22:**@proxy.waikato.ac.nz:80/" to /etc/bash.bashrc Added Acquire::http::proxy "http://mj22:**@proxy.waikato.ac.nz:80/"; to /etc/apt/apt.conf (which is what I imagine is letting Software Center retrieve packages). (where ** is my password) I have also added the equivalent ftp and https lines for the above entries. I get the internet fine and Software Centre can download packages but thats it. Related issues: The software centre can't fetch reviews (but can download packages). When trying to add an online account in Gnome 3 a dialog pop up appears with "Error getting a Request Token: Cannot connect to proxy (proxy.waikato.ac.nz)" Updates: After some time (10mins ish) Dropbox shows an error dialog box that reads: Trouble connecting to Dropbox servers. Maybe your internet connection is down, or you need to set you http_proxy environment variable. Is there a way I can see what environment variables are currently set?

• double-click does not open the default program

  I installed Ubuntu 12.04, with texlive-full and texworks. When I double-click a .tex file in Nautilus, it pops up a Do you want to run "xxxxxxxx.tex", or display it contents? "xxxxxxxx.tex" is an executable text file. Run in Terminal Display Cancel Run If I choose Display, it opens texworks. How can I make it open without seeing the above conversation window? By the way, is .tex file indeed an executable file? ADDED Just for the case, my ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list file looks like the following: [Default Applications] text/html=google-chrome.desktop x-scheme-handler/http=google-chrome.desktop x-scheme-handler/https=google-chrome.desktop x-scheme-handler/about=google-chrome.desktop x-scheme-handler/unknown=google-chrome.desktop text/x-tex=texworks.desktop x-scheme-handler/mailto=google-chrome.desktop [Added Associations] text/x-tex=texworks.desktop; text/x-bibtex=jabref.desktop;gedit.desktop; I observe texworks are both up and down. Should I remove one? ADDED This does not happen with all .tex files. In fact, I am currently using Ubuntu 12.04 under Virtual Box with Windows 7 host. I have my Dropbox account synced with the Windows 7 host, and I access files in Dropbox in Ubuntu through Virtual Box's shared folder functionality. (I didn't install Dropbox client in Ubuntu.) Files in Dropbox are owned by root with group vboxsf. My personal account is in the group vboxsf. It seems that I have to uncheck the option for "executable", but I have all my .tex files in the Dropbox shared folder. Would there be any workaround?

• Ditch cPanel / WHM in favour of manual seup

  We currently use cPanel / WHM on a reseller account but are looking at getting a dedicated server. My first thought was to duplicate this set up on the dedicated box to allow us to quickly create new accounts. I'll be a managed server so they'll have set up the LAMP stack. I'm curious if I actually need cPanel and WHM. We don't use many of the features from cPanel / WHM, just creating accounts and databases, clients do not have FTP access. I'm no sys admin and come from a Windows / GUI background but have some knowledge in setting up development servers. WHM: Creating accounts I presume this sets up the Apache virtual host, FTP access and DNS settings. I've some knowledge of editing the Apache files to create virtual hosts. Am I correct in thinking as long as the DNS is pointing to the server IP and the virtual host is configured the server can serve the (php) pages? I'm not sure I need per site FTP access as only we will have access so I could have a server wide/htdocs only access to view all the site. The company who supply the dedicated hosts would also provide the own DNS management tool so I'm not need to cPanel one. MySQL: Creating users and databases We use cPanel to create the MySQL users and databases. As it's a dedicated box and I can have root access I think this could be replaced by SQLyog for db management and phpMyAdmin for user management. Do you I need cPanel or can I get by editing a few text files for creating the accounts, then use the MySQL tools for databases? Or am I missing something major with how the sites are configured?

• How should I host our scalable worker processes?

  We are designing a new architecture for an enterprise business. The principles we've followed so far is not to develop what you can (possible buy and) deploy, ie, don't reinvent any wheels. In this way we've decided on CQRS, RabbitMQ, Riak and a bunch of other things. We still need to write /some/ business code though and these will be in the form of worker processes, which will consume commands from a message queue and after any side-effects, produce events onto another message queue. The idea behind this is that via the competing-consumers design we will have a scalable design right out of the box. One option is of writing a management infrastructure that will know how to: deploy code instantiate processes kill processes update configuration etc IE provide fault tolerance and scalability. Also, this is exactly what something like GAE and Heroku does for you, but in a public setting and in our organization, public is bad. My question is, is there an out-of-the-box solution that we can use to host our consumers in? Like a private cloud or private platform-as-a-service. Private Heroku or GAE. Is there some kind of software or software product with which we can do all of these things and thereby get scalability and fault tolerance over our consumers?

• Reacting to rectangle on rectangle collisions

  I don't know how to react to collisions between two axis aligned rectangles that have x, y, width and height values (x and y are from the centre of the box) to make them simply not overlap. I figured I'd just make them move away from each other depending on how far they intersect in the opposite direction (left, right, up or down) of where they collided. If I check for collisions only on the x axis or only on the y axis it works fine, but when checking for both collisions crazy stuff happens. This code executes when the first box collides with the second.   If you've never been a fan of TreeSurgeon (http://treesurgeon.codeplex.com/) then skip this post.However, if have been there have been some interesting developments over the last couple of years.The biggest one is T4Recently Bill Simser wrote a detailed post about the potential future of tree surgeon, called "Tree Surgeon - Alive and Kicking or Dead and Buried" He raised the question:Times have changed. Since that last release in 2008 so much has changed for .NET developers. The question is, today is the project still viable? Do we still need a tool to generate a project tree given that we have things like scaffolding systems, NuGet, and T4 templates. Or should we just give the project its rightful and respectful send off as its had a good life and has outlived its usefulness.For myself, the answer is, keep it.I've spent the last couple of years doing agile engineering coaching and architecture and from my experience, I can tell you, there are a lot of shops out there that would benefit from having Tree Surgeon as a viable product.  Many would benefit simply from having the software engineering information that is embedded in the tree surgeon site be floating around their conversation.Little things like, keep all of your software needed to run the build, with the build in the version control system.Have your developers and the build system using the same build.Have a one-touch buildSeparate your code from your interfacePut unit tests in first, not lastI've seen companies with great developers suffer from the problems that naturally come from builds taking 3 and 4 hours to run.  It takes work to get that build down to 10 minutes, but the benefits are always worth it.  Tree Surgeon gives you a leg up, by starting you off with a project that you can drop into your Continuous Integration system, right out of the box.Well, it used to be right out of the box.  Today, you have to play with the project to make it work for you, but even with the issues (it hasn't been updated since 2008) it still gives you a framework, with logical separations that you can build from.If you have used Tree Surgeon in the past, take a few minutes and drop a comment about what difference it made in your development style, and what you are doing differently today because of it.

• A Console Application or Windows Application in VS 2010 for Sharepoint 2010 : A common Error

  I have seen many Sharepoint Newbies cracking their head to create a Console/Windows  application in VS2010 and make it talk to Sharepoint 2010 Server. I had the same problem when i started with Sharepoint in the begining. It is important for you to acknowledge that SharePoint 2010 is based on .NET Framework version 3.5 and not version 4.0. In VS 2010 when you create a Console/Windows application, Make Sure you select .Net Framework 3.5 in the New Project Dialog Window.If you have missed while creating new Project Go to the Application tab of project properties and verify that .NET Framework Version 3.5 is select as the Target Framework. Now that you have selected the correct framework, will it work? Nope if the application is configured as x86 one it will not work. Sharepoint is a 64 Bit application and when you create a windows application to talk to Sharepoint it should also be a 64 Bit one. Go to Configuration Manager, Select x64. If x64 is not available select <New…> and in the New Solution Platform dialog box select x64 as the new platform copying settings from x86 and checking the Create new project platforms check box. This is not applicable if you are making a console application to talk to sharepoint with Client Object Model.

• Outlook 2010 - HTML Images not downloaded - at all - by default

  Maybe it's just me but I found this "Security Feature" of Office 2010 a bit annyoing out of the box.  Outlook does not download any pictures by default for HTML emails.  Now this is nothing new, but what is different is that Outlook 2010 has added another layer of security around the pictures.  You now have the option to finely tune when things are downloaded.  The side affect is that nothing is downloaded at all.  And when I would click on "Download Images" on an email, it still would not show the images.  I found that I had to explicitly tell Outlook to download HTML images and then restart Windows.  It did not work if I simply restarted Office.  Again, maybe this was just me.  Here's what you need to do in Outlook 2010 to enable images for HTML: Click on the new "File" tab Click on "Options" Click on "Trust Center" Clicn on "Trust Center Settings" Uncheck the "Don't download pictures automatically in HTML e-mail messages or RSS items" check box Click the "Okay" button Exit Outlook 2010 Again, for me I had to restart Windows (Windows 7 64bit, Office 2010 64bit) to get this to "take affect".

• notification icons in Gnome Shell cause lag

  Before marking this as a duplicate please read my question throughly. OK I am having a bit of a problem with Gnome Shell (3.3.90); Any time there are any icons in the bottom notification bar it causes massive lag when opening/closing and interacting with the Activities panel. If I close all applications that have a notification icon the lag goes away 100%. In My case it's drop box, but any program that requires a icon in the notification area will cause this issue to happen. I am using an AMD A6-3420M running Catalyst 11.11, however I can confirm that this is not a driver issue. I had the same issue on a system running a GeForce 8600GT,and a HD6850, and there is another question on here titled "Gnome Shell lags after a while" where the user is having the same exact issue and He is also using a nVidia card, a 9800GT to be specific. Please, this question has been asked several time and every time people say its a fglrx issue and close the question, or they mark the question as a duplicate and link to a question that says its an fglrx issue. This is not a driver issue, I understand that the AMD drivers caught heat for quite some time for Gnome Shell compatibility issues but those issues have been resolved. Aside from this issue Gnome Shell runs beautiful on my HD650, my A6-3420M, and my 8600GT. Having said that, does anyone know how to correct this issue? Closing Drop Box is not an option for me either.

• Oracle Virtual Desktop Client with USB smart card reader

  I have my Sun Ray thin client at home which I use religiously, I use a Sun Ray 3i at work as my main desktop and just always take my smart card home and happily continue with the hot desking feature. We released a software version of the Sun Ray client called Oracle Virtual Desktop Client (OVDC). There is a version for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. I have a minimac at home and I installed OVDC on it, which of course works great but since I like to re-connect to my session that I use at work, I wanted to try out the external usb smart card reader feature. I ordered a cute, low cost device online and tried it out. As expected, it worked out of the box without -any- configuration. I took the device, plugged it into my minimac, started OVDC, plugged in my smartcard and I got the password screen (screensaver) to get into my sun ray session on my server at work.   I've worked out how to get my linux based Netbeans PHP development machine to behave much like what happens when you create a new ASP.Net project in Visual Studio. Firstly create multiple PHP project in Netbeans,say for example mysite1 and mysite2. Next edit the apache2/sites-enabled/000-default file and add two virtualhost sections as below <VirtualHost 127.0.1.1> ServerName mysite1.localhost DocumentRoot /var/www/mysite1/ </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost 127.0.2.1> ServerName mysite2.localhost DocumentRoot /var/www/mysite2/ </VirtualHost> For each site you add, pick a different ip address similar to the above where I use the third octet to increment, next edit the etc/hosts file and add the following two lines 127.0.1.1 mysite1.localhost 127.0.2.1 mysite2.localhost Then in Netbeans, go to File->Project Properties click on 'Run Configuration' and set 'Project Url' to http://mysite1.localhost for the first project and http://mysite2.localhost for the second project. That will give you a PHP development box which develops multiple PHP projects similar to how a Visual Studio Windows based box handles multiple ASP.Net sites. Hope this helps someone :)

• Limiting calls to WCF services from BizTalk

The problem My BTS solution was receiving thousands of messages at once. After processing by BTS I needed to send them on via one of several WCF services depending on the message content. The problem is that due to the asynchronous nature of BizTalk the WCF services were getting hammered and could not cope with the load. Note: It is possible to limit the SOAP calls in the BtsNtSvc.exe.Config file but that does not have the desired results for Net-TCP WCF services. The solution So I created a new MessageType for the messages in question and posted them to the BTS messaeg box. This schema included the URL they were being sent to as a promoted property. I then subscribed to the message type from a new orchestraton (that does just the WCF send) using the URL as a correlation ID. This created a singleton orchestraton that was instantiated when the first message hit the message box. It then waits for further messages with the same correlation ID and type and processs them one at a time using a loop shape with a timer (A pretty standard pattern for processing related messages) Image to go here This limits the number of calls to the individual WCF services to 1. Which is a good start but the service can handle more than that and I didn't want to create a bottleneck. So I then constructed the Correlation ID using the URL concatinated with a random number between 1 and 10. This makes 10 possible correlation IDs per URL and so 10 instances of the singleton Orchestration per WCF service. Just what I needed and the upper random number is a configuration value in SSO so I can change the maximum connections without touching the code.

• Reconstruct a file from a TCP stream

  I have a client and a server and a third box which sees all packets from the server to the client (but not the other way around). Now when the client requests a file from the server (over HTTP), the third box sees the response. I am trying to reconstruct the file there. I am using libpcap to capture TCP datagrams and trying to reconstruct the file there. Here is what I did Listen for packets on an interface Group all packets which have the same ACK number Sort the group based on SEQ number Extract data from each packet and combine them and write to the disk The problem is, the file thus generated is not exactly the same as the original file. Does everything sound correct here? Some more details: I am using C++ The packet data is being stored as std::vector<char> I did change the byte order while reading the ack number and seq number from the packet using ntohl I am not sure if I need to change the byte order for the data as well. I tried to reverse the data from each packet before combining them, even that did not work. Is there something I am missing?

• C++ Windows Forms application unhandled exception error when textbox empty

  I'm building a temperature conversion application in Visual Studio for a C++ course. It's a Windows Forms application and the code that I've written is below. There's other code to of course, but I'm not sure you need it to help me. My problem is, when I run the application if I don't have anything entered into either the txtFahrenheit or txtCelsius2 textboxes I get the following error: "An unhandled exception of type 'System.FormatException' occurred in mscorlib.dll" The application only works right now when a number is entered into both of the textboxes. I was told to try and use this: Double::TryParse() but I'm brand new to C++ and can't figure out how to use it, even after checking the MSDN library. • I receive the error 'grub-install /dev/sda failed' while attempting to install Ubuntu as the computer's only OS.

  I am attempting to install Ubuntu on a box which was previously running Windows 7. I have also experienced the dreaded "Unable to install GRUB" error. I am not attempting to dual boot. I have previously run a Windows boot disk and removed all existing partitions. If I run the Ubuntu 12.04 install CD and click install after the config screens, I get the error Executing 'grub-install /dev/sda' failed. This is a fatal error. (It is the same error as this question: Unable to install GRUB) All the questions I've read while looking for a solution are related to dual boot. I'm not interested in dual boot, I'm after a clean out the box Ubuntu install. How can I achieve this? (For my sanity, please use very simple instructions when responding. I don't claim to have any talent either for linux or as a sysadmin) Additional details copied from comments dated: 2012-05-29 ~15:19Z After booting from the CD, clicking Try Ubuntu, and then sudo fdisk /dev/sda I get fdisk: unable to seek on /dev/sda: Invalid argument sudo fdisk /dev/sdb gives Device contains neither a valid DOS partiion table, nor Sun, SGI or OSF disklabel. Building a new DOS disklabel with disk identifier 0x15228d1d. Changes will remain in memory only until you decide to write them. After that of course, the previous content won't be recoverable. Warning: invalid flag 0x0000 of partition table 4 will be corrected by w(rite). Command (m for help): I should add the Live CD desktop is graphically bad. I've got missing parts of programs and the terminal occasionally reflects to the bottom of the screen. But I can't imagine this is related.

• Dedicated Servers: Is one better then two for LAMP pseudo HA setup? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I know there are zillions of commentary about hosting out there, but I haven't read much about this. Our current well known host is having too many problems, the hardware we are on it subpar, and I'm ready to leave. A day of downtime can cost as much as our monthly hosting bill. A month of bad performance is just killing us right now, user and google wise. I'm wondering about running two dedicated boxes for LAMP, one running as the primary Nginx/Apache (proxy pass), and the other as the MySQL box. Running a single box scares the bejesus out of me because who knows how long it will take anyone to fix a raid card or whatever. The idea is to set this up using some sort of failover system using pacemaker and heartbeat. If one server goes down the other can take over for the other running both web and db. There are some good articles over at Linode about this. I have a few DBs that are 1GB+ and would like to load them into memory. Because of this, I'm shying away from a Linode HA setup because for the price I could do it with two dedicated like I described. Am I mad or an idiot? What are people out there doing for pseodu high availability good performance setups under $400/month? I'm a webmaster; I do a lot of things none of it that well :)

• Should one reject over-scoped projects?

  I spoke to my first potential client today and he told me about the requirements of his project - an Android app. He is a well-known designer / photographer in my country and now wants me to "convert the website into an app, custom-tailored". So the requirements, details stripped out, are as follows: eCommerce Aggregating all his content like videos, blogs, tweets, etc. into the app Live streaming any of his studio demos Augmented reality. So that people can see what his painting will look like on their wall before they buy it Taxi Sharing Now, for a freelance project, it seems too over-scoped. I am not saying that I cannot do it. I can. But let me be realistic: There is a steep learning curve when it comes to VR. I am not a tester. I have never white-box tested my own apps. I always black-box test. Since he is a renowned artist, something short of perfect might harm his public image So, I asked him for 2 weeks' worth of time before I give him the final answer. Now knowing whom to consult for advise, I am posting the question here. Although interesting and personally challenging, I am split-minded about accepting a project like this. I will be the only developer for this. Should one reject a project that seems to be over-scoped for one's own abilities?

• Amazon Careers website - are resumes processed in plain text format only?

  The submission site has the following options: "Please upload your resume (Word Document, max size: 512 KB) OR Please copy and paste the text version of your file here", with a text box below the latter option. I went ahead and uploaded my shiny LaTeX resume (as a PDF), despite the fact that they seem to want a Word Document, and there didn't seem to be any issues. However, when I went back to edit my profile, there was no evidence that my PDF had been uploaded, other than a text version of my resume, awfully formatted and clearly stripped from the PDF, sitting in the text box below "Please copy and paste the text version of your file here". Exasperated, I did a quick and dirty copy of the text from my resume into a Word doc and uploaded that. Same result: no evidence of a file uploaded, just a stripped text version in the textbox. What I'm wondering now is, are they only going to look at the text version of my resume? If that's the case then I'm obviously going to edit it so that it looks halfway decent and doesn't contain such atrocities from the conversion as "Other Skills: LTEX". I can pretty little text files without too much effort, so this isn't that big of deal. However, my LaTeX resume is going to look better than anything I can do in plain text, so if the site is actually keeping a copy of that, then I certainly don't want to override it. Has anyone here either gone through the Amazon hiring process or interviewed candidates and know how this works? (i.e. When on site with Amazon, did the interviewers have diversely formatted resumes, or did they all look suspiciously similar)
